I put Black Diamond Western #34 35 on the FTP site.
JVJ's comics, my scans, LoftyPilot's edits.
Also could someone rename Black Diamond #13 to Black Diamond Western #13 so it sorts in order.
-
Now up!
Fixed #13 listing as well.
Thanks to all for getting these scans made!
:)
-
I see in browsing around that Loftypilot's edits of my scans of JVJ's copies of Black Diamond Western #9 and 12 never made it up here. That has now been corrected.
Also uploaded an issue of Fight -- NMS -- don't know whose.
On the FTP, Yoc.
-
Now up and thanks for the missing Fight issue as well Jon.
Was that one of your scans?
-Yoc
-
Now up and thanks for the missing Fight issue as well Jon.
Was that one of your scans?
-Yoc
Yoc, you must be working too hard. You certainly know that NMS means "Not My Scan". Right?
-
I didn't notice that sentence earlier Jon.
My bad.
-
Uploaded to FTP: Black-Diamond Western #38 39 40
JVJ's comics, my scans, LoftyPilot's edits.
Also going to ABPC
-
Thanks very much guys,
all of them are now up.
:D
-
Uploaded to FTP: Black-Diamond Western #41
Despearado #6
JVJ's comics, my scans, LoftyPilot's edits.
they go in Comic House / Lev Gleason
-
Thanks for the scans guys.
-
Now on FTP
Black Diamond Western #45 bad covers replaced and JVJ index card added otherwise the same scan
Terry & the Pirates #10 four covers and two text pages added. Two versions: One has pages as originally supplied (high quality but 800 pixels wide) other has original pages enlarged to consistent size of 1000 pixels.
-
Thanks Jon, I left it up to Yoc to decide if he wants the enlarged Terry and the Pirates scan.
-
If people are happy with them as-is then I am.
Thanks for the uploads Jon.
:)
-
Kilroys #46 on the FTP
-
Now up, thanks Jon
:)
-
Black Diamond Western #14 43 47 now all on FTP.
All are JVJ comics, my scans, Lofty Pilot edits.
-
Now up!
Thanks very much guys.
:)
-
Black Diamond Western #44 46 48 now all on FTP.
All are JVJ comics, my scans, Lofty Pilot edits.
-
Thanks Jon,
all of them are now up.
:)
-
Black Diamond Western #11 now available on site. It's a JVJon production -- that's right, this time you have to settle for my edits, not Lofty's.
This one is c2c. There is an incomplete scan on site that I presume can be removed.
-
Thanks Jon and the very incomplete scan is now gone.
-
Police #124 now up on site. My comic (yeah I do own some of my own :-), My scan, Lofty's edits.
-
Thanks Jon!
As uploader for you to get credit we've got to use your name as the 'author.'
But don't worry, I added in the description area that Lofty did the edit.
-
I thought I put Jon / Lofty in the author spot -- are you telling me I can't use anything but my log in name for it to work?
-
Hi Jon,
As there is no actual DCM member with the name Jon-Lofty it can confuse the software. Login names are needed in the author listing.
Any credits for the creation of the scans can be included in the description of the scan or in the actual file name as it appears on your HD. I added in full credits on the books in question.
I hope that helps,
-Yoc
-
Black Diamond Western #50 53 54 all JVJ Jon Loftypilot productions uploaded to FTP. Latter two may be replacements for tiny scan and digital camera scan --they were at GAC didn't check here.
Thanks for the explanation on name Yoc, I may have confused the software over at GAC completely then as it's how I've named them there, of course that was moving from FTP not direct uploading o maybe it's ok.
-
Hi Jon,
NP, it wouldn't crash the system, only confuse the internal statistic Jon.
I'm adding your latest now.
-Yoc
-
now uploading to FTP
Black Diamond Western #58 JVJ Jon LoftyPilot
Operation Peril #13 Jon LoftyPilot
Also NMS, but on the FTP root directory where they might be overlooked are:
Mighty Midget #12
Popular #121
US Jones #2
-
Thanks Jon.
Now up.
Uploaders to the FTP - Please be sure you are uploading into your own folder within the 'comicuploads' folder.
Thanks.
-
c2c uploads of Wings 7 16 18 19 22 25 39 42 43 67 73 83 84. In each case fiche pages or missing pages have been added from JVJ's comics. Between two to eight pages are affected per issue The scans are otherwise identical to those already in place.
I've also added a file with just the missing pages if you think that will save on bandwidth.
-
HI Jon,
WOW, now that's a BIG update!!
And great thinking on the 'fills only' file... but I don't see it on the FTP.
I'll add the full files but I think your fills only idea would be a good one to have as well.
Great job!
:)
-
I've reupped Wings #42 which was apparently a damaged .rar file and Wings #43 which had a duplicated page 38a.
I also upped the fills only file. Guess I only FTPed that one to GAC. I get lost sometimes when I FTP to GAC DCM and BBBrown. I wish there was an FTP program that would send once to multiple places like you can to wit email.
-
Thanks Jon!
All are now up.
But sadly I notice Wings 39 has a duplicate page. I'm guessing both it and the FILLS only file are missing the first letters page (Wings_Comics_no.39_194311_pg34).
-Yoc
-
correcting this now. I also noticed two damaged pages in the orignal scan Wings #67 which I've filled. So new versions of 39 67 and fills file will be on FTP shortly
-
Thanks for doing this Jon.
:)
-

Sorry then Jon, but it had you name attached to the upload on GAC where I got it at.
Geo
-
No problem, Geo, looking at it it might possibly be a Henry Peters' scan. I'd not be ashamed to take credit for one of those any time. :-)
-
Now on the FTP:
Cowboy Western (Charlton) 59 60 63 66 67 all NMS

Uncle Charlie's Fables #2 and #4 from Lev Gleason, Jon and HP edit's now on FTP for moving. Files names Uncle Charlies ... since I seem to recall 's don't work well.

Good memory Jon.
Thanks, I'll have them up shortly.
:)
-
Phantom Lady #19 on FTP series no longer under her blackout beam in any part ;D
NMC NMS NME
-
Jon,
Your PL19 is originally from JVJ if you wanted to add that note on GAC
We've had these scans for a long time while I've worked on 'fixing' them for the next Phantom Lady Archives which is always 'in production'.
If npro has a better copy of PL19 to share I hope she will do so. None of the copies I've seen scanned was in register.
-Yoc
-
Actually it is my scan of Bud Plant's comic, folks.
Credit where it's due.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Now we have another Phantom Lady from Jon:
Phantom Lady 021, Dec. 1948, c2c, (in PAPER now).
You may download it now.
Thanks Jon.
Geo
-
Both Phantom Lady 19 and 21 scans were made by JVJ from books very generously supplied by Bud Plant for the Phantom Lady Archives. They supplied raw scans PL 19-21. Bud and Jim have been wonderfully generous with their time and books on the project. Of course they aren't the only ones to be thanks for their help and our Acknowledgements page will be quite large when it finally is released.
:)

Uploaded to FTP
Squeeks 1-2 (Lev Gleason) my scans, AgentUup's edits

Also will be adding one more JonTheScanner up'd for us:

Hopefully I'll get it up'd before I have to go to a birthday celebration today, otherwise it will be up'd shortly after I get back.
Geo
-
Spirit looks fine. I think there were enough eyes taking different approaches, this time, that the confidence is about as high as it can get. Thanks, incidentally, to bchat for going ahead and providing confirmation while I was way too busy to sift through methodically.
-
Now on FTP Wings 24 and 26, JVJ comics, my scan's LoftyPilot edits.
-

I'm curious about Johnny Law.
On GCD it's listed as published by 'Good Comics'
Is that a known Lev Gleason imprint?

Crime and Justice #20,and 23 both show as file not existing.
I can't fix that. Let me know if a new upload is needed. If you really need it very very fast, try GAC, I put these both places.
-
Being fixed as we speak, sorry about that.
Geo

A new upload from JonTheScanner and LoftPilot is Wings Comics 031.

Wings Comics #74, c2c, (diff. scan) is now up on the download site.
Geo
-
Since nobody else has mentioned this... the last half of Wings 31's pages are numbered wings74...
-
Interesting.
But I can confirm it is a complete Wings31 just the pages are misnamed.
-
I'll look into it to Len, interesting.
Geo

Awesome, Jon. Of course, LOVE the Strange Terrors, but also sampled the Terry and the Pirates and am now hooked on the series!

Terry and the Pirates was usually a pretty good adventure read. The OTR was pretty good too

Thanks gentlemen for the updates.

Nice work guys!

I'd like to use this space to thank EVERYBODY for the good scans that have been upped of late. Some of them don't have threads here in the blog, so I can't do them individually, but you're all doing great, guys, and don't think you aren't appreciated.

So true Darkmark, it has been great to see all the books that have arrived in just the past few months. It's truly amazing.
I too thank you gentle folks for your up's, sorry if I've missed a few of you.
In fact I will be up'ing a new book in the next day or so myself.

Police #117 and Feature #64 now up on FTP for transfer. My comics & scans, HP edits.
Man no stopping Jon on the up's it seems.
Those 2 will have to wait till Thursday, before I can get to them, (I still have 5 still left now plus the one I'm up'ing right now).
When it rains it pours it seems!!
And please don't take this as I'm complaining, I'm just the only one here right now who can take care of business.
So Please be patience, they all will get up.
Geo
-
Darn, you guys are good!
-
BRAVO JON, HP and GEO!
Wow, what a wealth of goodies.
Thanks very much for the uploads guys!
:D
-
Police Comics #117 and Feature Comics #64 both are up and available for downloading.
Geo
-
Now on the FTP ready for moving:
Police #121 HP edits
Cowboys 'n' Injuns #1 AgentUup edits
check the spelling on the latter. I put no ' in the name as I recall the program doesn't like those
-
Thanks Jon!
And yes, the software doesn't like any Special Characters in file names.
I'll get these up asap.
:)
-
Thanks for Cowboys 'n' Injuns #1! It wasn't one of the unidentified IW/Supers, but it is at least now eliminated as a candidate.
-
Based on the contents, the unidentified IW Cowboys 'n' Injuns #10 is a Tick Tock Tales and not an IW Cowboys 'n' Injuns. But I have the rest of ME's CNI so I'll check.
-
Thanks, Jon. I actually have IW/Super's Kat Karson 1 and Kiddie Kapers 17 as possible reprints of CnI, hough I'd have to look again to see why I thought that.
-
Now on the FTP:
Wings 28, 71. JVJ's comics, my scans, LoftyPilot's edits.
Crack 42. My comic and scan HP's edits.
Captain Atom (Nationwide) #6. My comic and scan HP's edits.
-
Jon, I'll get to these in the morning, it's to late now to do it.
I have them ready on my HD for up'ing.
Geo
-
Attention, the following file are available now for downloading:
Wings Comics 028 c2c
Wings Comics 071 c2c
Crack Comics 042 c2c
Captain Atom 006 c2c
Thank you Jon for these.
Geo
-
Thanks for the uploads Jon and Geo!
It looks like Crack 42 has pages out of order.
-Yoc
-
Yoc, it looks like Captain Atom is too.
Geo
-
Not downloaded these but noticed some of them appear out of order in Comic Preview BUT this doesn't mean they are out of order in CDisplay etc.
I gave up for time being dealing with cbr/rar files since it doesn't handle contents like zip files etc. So check real file if comic viewer shows it out of sync
-
Geo,
Can you confirm these are out of order inside the file?
Jon/Lofty are both old hands at this and never had a problem before this with file names, etc.
-Yoc
-
Crack 42 would have been an HP edit not Lofty, but he's equally old hand. In any case I just DLed the file as it is here and the scanne page are in order. I have no idea why a random page shows up on the DL page.

I've confirmed this as well. I am guessing that the Preview function is somehow being confused by the zip file contents and is displaying the images in the wrong order?

More information!
I've examined the ZIP file more closely, and determined that the actual file order inside the ZIP is in fact the order that Preview is displaying them in; i.e. the files in the ZIP aren't stored in ascending order of the file name. However, most programs that open/display ZIP files will display them in order of the name, not "natural" order.
If it's possible for the Preview code to do an implicit sort by filename when it opens the zip file to display the images (and display the first available image), this would fix the issue.
-
I'm sure Capt will iron out the bugs eventually but until then lets all make an extra effort to have file names that use page numbers with double digit numbers and display in both CDisplay and the DCM Preview in the correct order. And please have a cover as your first image whenever possible.
-Yoc

-Yoc
Yoc,
My explanation probably wasn't very clear, I'll try to restate it. The files inside the ZIP file for Crack 42 are named appropriately (double digit page numbers, etc.), and if you extract them to a folder, and sort them in order of the file name, the pages are in the correct order. However, when the ZIP file was created, the files were apparently added in non-sequential order. Capt DJ's Preview program appears to be pulling the files out of the ZIP file in the "natural" file order, instead of in order of the file name. CDisplay is probably doing a "sort by name" function when it opens the .cbr/cbz file so they are displayed in the intended order.
I hope this makes more sense.
- Snard
-
Ah, thanks Snard. I'm sure that will help CaptDJ
Funny though, if PKZip (or whatever) is doing this I'd had expected a lot more uploads with the same problem.
I use WinRar for everything but haven't uploaded anything since the preview function was added.
-Yoc
-
Yoc, if you can get to them before I do, they both are in my folder on the ftp awaiting uploading, (in the correct page order, I checked them both out).
Geo
-
Thanks Geo for explaining that.
This is a known issue and one been working to fix, thought I had fixed it BUT it still occurs with some comics.
Basically whenever you add a file to a zip/rar file it gets given an index number. So first file added is index id 0, next file 1 etc.
I think I might have fixed this for .cbr/rar files but seems need to do some more work with zip/cbz files. My function basically opens the cbz/cbr file, finds index numbers then sorts them by filename.... but I'm guessing still few bugs in code.
Also reason cover thumbnail random page is because the extract thumbnail script that runs in background also based on my comic preview code for opening zip/rar files so it see's that page as first page so extracts it, resizes it and puts it in thumbnail folder.
-
Out of order cbz files should be fixed now :-D
Thou still needs testing and chances are another bug will show up now I fixed it
-

I notice that the thumbnail image on Crack 42 is still showing the page it showed before; is there a separate process for updating those thumbnails, now that the preview code is fixed?
Thanks,

The thumbnail extractor runs twice an hour and only does comics it not seen before ie new ones.
Chances are I will need to rerun the whole thumbnail extractor again and get it to pick up images that it missed before. So it will stay that way until I manually rerun the script once I have spoken to other staff. Other option was to manually make staff flag covers not displaying right and manually upload them but script doesn't do that yet and also they busy enough so better to automate it if possible.
-
Finding a way to flag a title as 'new' again might be the fast answer and let the auto add handle it after that.
-
Finding a way to flag a title as 'new' again might be the fast answer and let the auto add handle it after that.
Well I can do that easily but its more an issue of how to put that into sites code.
Might be just simpler to run script again since takes 1 night to do them all. Then mean's no one else needs to do anything. Will still be comics that don't have covers / wrong cover but shouldn't be tooo many so we can edit them natually when got edit/add/delete function up.
-
Is there perhaps a way for the staff to fire off the the script when perhaps you aren't available Capt?

Jungle Comics #95 (incomplete)
Love Letters (Quality) #10 (coverless) on FTP to move.
Got you cover Jon, they will be up tonight, (PDT).
I take it that these are yours, I will post them as that unless you state otherwise.
Both are now up on the site for your downloading pleasure.
Jon I added a bigger cover to Jungle Comics, but couldn't find a big one for Love Letter though.
Would hope you don't mind that I did that.
Geo
-
Geo, Jungle 95 wasn't my scan, but a scan of a friend who wishes to remain nameless. Ditto Love Letters 10
Now on FTP
Frankenstein (Prize) #8 my scans HP edits
Cowboys 'n' Injuns 3 (ME) my scan's AgentUup's edits
Wings 48 (Fiction House) JVJ's comic, My scans, LoftyPilot's edits
-
Fixed file name to Cowboys n Injuns 003 on FTP.
Jon, please remember special characters bugger up the software running the site when adding.
All are now up.
A HUGE thank-you for the Frankenstein book!!
:)
-
Huzzah! My hunch was right. IW's Kat Karson #1 reprints ME's Cowboys 'n' Injuns #3. Now I can strike that one from the unidentified IW list. Thanks so much!
-
Between the GAC and DCM crowd many of the unknown IW's have now been identified. Probably more in the last two years than in the previous twenty. Hopefully we will eventually have them all
-
now on the FTP. Wings 41, 50 JVJ's comic, my scans, LoftyPilot's edits. Also I just purchased and received Wings #58 this was the last issue of that series that we neither had scans of nor JVJ owned (though he will soon :-) so the series will be completely scanned sooner or later.
-
Going up shortly, thx Jon!
And congrats on Wings 58 and very nice of you to fill a hole in Jim's collection!
:)
-
Wings 51 & 66 on FTP now -- JVJonLoftyPilot productions

Going up now, thanks boys!

Wings 53 & 69 on FTP now -- JVJonLoftyPilot productions

Thanks Jon and LP!
Now up.
:)
-
Wings Comics 55 and 62 now on FTP for moving to distribution.
And I finished scanning my purchase of #58 so they're all ready to go back to Jim. (Be sure to add #58 to your catalog, Jim. I'll be getting in touch with you to decide what's next for my seventh (I think) box. Thanks so much for providing these. We'd never have gotten so many scans without your help.)
-
Thanks very much Jon for ALL your scans.
When you've decided on your requests please share a list in the Scanner's Lounge so I can update the JVJ offerings list.
I'm sure you'll make some high Quality selections. (oh, was that too obvious? ;) )
-
Crime and Justice 7 and 12
Captain Video #1 (c2c)
all uploaded via FTP
I see freddyfly already grabbed my C&J scans from DC++ and uploaded them here (at least I assume they're mine as they're the same size), so I deleted them from the FTP. Captain Video awaits action though.
-
sorry about that... for some reason I thought they had been there for several days (I usually wait a while in case the original uploader wants to add them to dcm or where-ever). Also, there was no scanner ID in the file name
-
No harm done Len. I see you've added Jon's credits to the books. Thanks.
CV1 going up shortly, thanks Jon!
:)
-
Len, it never bothers me if someone re-shares my scans. That's what they're for. And I very seldom label my scans (except on Jim's books since I think Jim's generosity needs to be noted.
What I really need is an FTP program that lets me upload once and simultaneously directs the uploads to GAC, DCM, and the DC++ pusher. Is such a thing even possible?
Jon

Nothing comes to mind (but it's definitely possible), but if you're willing to roll up your sleeves a bit...

Now on FTP
Wings 56 JVJonLoftyPilot
Captain Video #4 new c2c scan

It seems to me that would automate it, but what I'd still have to upload to each site. I was thinking bandwidth reduction whereby one upload actually is directed in three ways.
-
I've added both the Captain Video #4 c2c now and Wings Comics #56.
Did you scan the Captain Video or just found it?
Thanks for the uploads Jon by the way and they are now live for downloading.
Geo
-
I'm showing off my inexperience here, but could someone tell me what exactly the DC++ pusher is?
-
Did you scan the Captain Video or just found it?
My scan on Captain Video

My scan on Captain Video
Thanks I'll add that info to it then.
Now a sneak peek at what's next from the scanning table of JontheScanner:

These are from Jon's scans, (I copied these from his originals).
Be on the outlook for them, (coming soon).

Geo

I also see where I've failed to let you know, Jon,
that the books arrived safely back some time ago. I just today opened the box and want to thank you publicly for the extra Wings and Black Diamond issue. You are too kind.
Peace, Jim (|:{>

Well said Jim. And Jon is a first class guy for the extras.
:)
-
Wings 57 and 58 now on FTP. These are JVJonLoftyPilot productions and the final comics in the batch from JVJ. That's the 6th box from Jim, I think.

PS:Jon I've added credits to all the books, please check to make sure I credited them right, if not just post here about it. Thanks.

Thanks Jon. Treasure Comics is a Prize book and I've moved it to that section.
Great additions - especially nice to see the rest of the Rangers 6 and Jet Aces is nearly complete now.
:)

D'oh Where's the forehead smack smiley? I knew it was Prize. And I think I even upped it myself to the wrong section over at GAC. I'd better go check.
I hope to get the last Jet Aces next time from Jim. Not sure why it wasn't sent this time.
-
I think BuilderBoy said it was in such bad shape it scared him off. He's buying another copy to scan IIRC.
-
Wings 96 118

This long series will then be complete.

Treasure Comics #8 now up from Jon and JVJ

Boy Comics 52 c2cized and
Wyatt Earp 22 (Charlton)
now on FTP
-
Enjoyed issue #52 of "Boy Comics" and I'm sure I'll get around to the Charlton issue of Wyatt Earp, since I do have a certain nostalgic appreciation for comics based on early television shows which I remember.
-
Now up, thanks Jon!
:)
-
Enjoyed issue #52 of "Boy Comics" and I'm sure I'll get around to the Charlton issue of Wyatt Earp, since I do have a certain nostalgic appreciation for comics based on early television shows which I remember.
The Dell Wyatt Earp was based on the TV show. The Charlton and Atlas/Marvel were not though of course it's all the same actual (fictionalized) person.
-
Without the television show, I doubt any of the Wyatt Earp books would have been printed, much like the syndicated British television series, "The Adventures of Robin Hood," starring Richard Greene which ran from 1955 to 1960 gave birth to books featuring Robin Hood from Charlton, Quality, Magazine Enterprises, and giveaway books from Browns Shoe Company. The Quality books were basically based on the television show, but the others weren't. Being legendary, Robin Hood was a public domain character who could be adapted a lot of different ways, much like Wyatt Earp had been presented as the stuff of western myths for so many decades he was fair game to be fictionalized for television, movies, and comic books.
I like the Charlton issues of Wyatt Earp simply because I grew up in a small town and was familiar with the comics before the area finally had a television station that included us in its broadcast range. I did see the final year of Wyatt Earp, enjoyed its version of the Gunfight near the O.K. Corral, and was sorry to see the program leave the air, but I never cared much for the Dell books despite their photo covers and obvious licensing deals.
-
Actually the ME Robin Hood books beginning with #6 were retitled Adventures of Robin Hood" and had photo covers of Richard Green.
-
Haven't seen but the first issue or two of Magazine Enterprises version of Robin Hood. I never saw the program while it was still being produced but it was a childhood favorite of my wife and we have the first and last season on DVD. I remember when DC continued Quality's version of Robin Hood, but the version I remember with the fondest memories are the giveaway books that were free in some shoe stores. I talked one of my cousins in Iowas into trading his entire collection of those and many of his commercial comics from Dell and DC for a silver dollar. Silver dollars were still common in Wyoming at that time, so I thought I was getting the best of the deal.
-
Thanks for the scans of "Feature Comics" #67. I know it is a very minor milestone in comics history but that issue contains the Spider Widow story in which Tony Gray finally reveals that he is the Raven (and wears one of the goofiest costumes ever worn by a Quality hero which puts him in some strange company). I have a friend who insists that the Raven's identity was never revealed and that the information at GCD about the issue is wrong; I'm going to send him a copy of the final page of that story. I enjoyed the story on its own merits as well what with the very Agatha Christy like situation and Gray being suspected of murder. The Doll Man story is also above average.
-
I put my scan of Boy #63 (the 52 page US version) up on the FTP. The one we have in place is the 36-page Canadian version. Boy #67 is on the scanner now.
-
Ah, thanks Jon.
I spotted that on DC++ last night and uploaded it already. I didn't know who to credit so I'll fix that.
I've removed the broken Canadian one as well.
Looking forward to the new one,
-Yoc
-
You work too fast Yoc :-)
Now up there on FTP are two more Fights. 66 and 33 (missing CF). These are JVJ Jon Sooth productions.
-
:)
Sorry Jon, call me speedy.
I'll get the two Fight books up asap.
-
Keep on pickin' those Fights, Jon. We're in your corner.
ETA: Be sure to check out the Senorita Rio strip in FIGHT #66. It's done by Jerry Grandenetti and the Eisner Studio, and it does look a lot like The Spirit!
-
They are, indeed, great, dm.
but they are NOT by Grandenetti nor the Eisner studio. To quote the current listing in GCD:
"Historically attributed to Jerry Grandenetti, current comparisons/research make this ID untenable. Possibly a European or South American artist."
Gotta stay current, guy.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Now on the FTP
Blackhawk 86 96 98 101 102 all ctc. I'm told the scans now there are not.
Boy Comics 67 from paper
-
Thanks Jon!
Are there any credits I should use?
I don't see any scanner's names in the actual file names.
-
The Blackhawks were scanned several years ago by someone in the business who prefers not to be credited.
I just uploaded Rangers #26 to the FTP -- Jim's comics my scans and edits -- can't let Lofty have all the fun.
-
Very nice, thanks Jon!
Going live shortly.
:)
-
Rangers #13 on FTP -- a JVJon scan
-
thanks Jon! Going up shortly.
:)
-
Cowgirl Romances (the real things and c2c) #2 5 are on the FTP. #2 is a c2cization of the scan already there.
-
Thanks Jon, going up shortly!
-
Always appreciate those c2c scans Jon, thanks for them.
Geo
-
Rangers #17 -- JVJon EtaPi
Young King Cole v3 n5 -- all me
going to the FTP
Also note that the IW reprint issue there (Master Detective 17) is not a reprint of Young King Cole, but Criminals on the Run v4 n2. This series was the continuation of YKC.
-
Thanks for the uploads and the IW correction.
I'll put the IW on the next list for Prime User to fix.
-
Thanks, Jon. I've got the V3 N1 of YKC from JVJ, so we're only missing the 3/3 right now for the full run of that title!
Also somebody got the cover for the Funnies #22 you scanned, so we now have issues 1-29 of that title C2C, which is as late as we can go with that book. I'm still impressed with us having such a solid run of a 30's book.
-
Two more Rangers from JVJon and Loftypilot, thanks guys!
-
Thanks to Jon, LoftyPilot and Jim for Rangers Comics #11 and Rangers Comics #12, both c2c issues from JVJ's fine collection.
Geo
-
Thanks Jon, LoftyPilot and JVJ (Jim) for Rangers Comics 028 and Cowgirl Romances 009.
Great teamwork on these guys.
Geo

Out Our Way dailies from 1924 uploaded to FTP
-
Going up shortly. Thanks Jon.
-
Now going up in FTP
Out Our Way 1922 and 1923 dailies complete.
Yoc or someone, please remove the old 1922 and 1923 files as those are faulty. No sense causing confusion. I've also been working on Gasoline Alley and Vignettes of Life (not exactly a comic strip, but by Frank Godwin who later did Connie and Rusty Riley)
You haven't seen me around here much lately. For those of you who know about my health problems, don't worry, that's not it, or not a major factor in any case. The problem is my scanner developed a defect and won't scan without putting a bright pink line down the page. It's also old and slow so I'm getting a new one real soon now. In fact I asked Jim for another box already. So I'll be back to comic-book scanning instead of just comic strip cleaning soon.
Jon
-
Thanks for the update Jon and great to hear you are getting more JVJ books.
It's looking like a banner year for the project!
:)
-
Now on the FTP Straight Arrow #19. Another JVJon book after quite a while. Next up is Straight Arrow #22 which will complete that series.
Jon
-
Now up!
Welcome back Jon, lovely to see you scanning again!
:)
-
Now on the FTP Straight Arrow #19. Another JVJon book after quite a while. Next up is Straight Arrow #22 which will complete that series.
Jon
Thank you. "Straight Arrow" is a wonderful series (I also love the Red Hawk back-up stories) and so many issues of that series have been added lately that the end is now in sight. Fabulous!
-
Now uploading to FTP
1925 Out Our Way dailies in two parts as I've decided these wonderful strips by Williams deserved larger treatment.
BTW Yoc or somebody, the 1922 file (the one not specifically labeled dailies) can be removed. It is missing the Christmas strip. Otherwise it's identical to the other file there.
-
Thanks Jon, file removed and new ones going up now.
BTW, could I get you to start using Zip or Cbz files in the future?
They cause less potential problems on our end. No worry on previous uploads though.
Thanks!

I'll try to remember. I have winrar installed which I prefer for other things, so "zipping" defaults to that if I don't ask.
-
Thanks Jon. CB+ is also asking people to ZIP if at all possible new uploads so we might as well ask for them as well right?
-

Just a note: WinRAR can be configured to default to either ZIP or RAR format when it creates new archives. I also configure mine to not store paths so it won't create a top level folder inside the ZIP file.

New uploads:
Straight Arrow #22 (ME) series now complete
Bobby Benson #3 (ME) now c2c
-
New uploads:
Straight Arrow #22 (ME) series now complete
Bobby Benson #3 (ME) now c2c
Done and done. Thanks Jon for finishing up with the last book of the Straight Arrow series.
Both are now up and available for downloading.
Geo
-
Looks like Bobby Benson is only missing 4½ panels in issue #19 and then that will be finished too.
-
Great job, our thanks to all the Straight Arrow scanners out there for completing another series for us!
:D
-
Now going to FTP Vignettes of Life for 1925. This is sort of a weekly comic strip by Frank Godwin who is better known for his work on Connie and Rusty Riley. He also drew some Wonder Woman stories. It's not exactly a comic strip, but exactly as it says vignettes. It often appeared in the newspaper magazines rather than with the comics. It was printed in color or, in smaller newspapers, in b&w. These are all b&w. They were all extracted from archives by me and cleaned up. Personally I think Godwin's line art is stunning and I only hope I didn't do it too much of a disservice.
I also have all of 1924 to post I hope. It began on June 1st of that year. The only copy of June 15th, titled "The Daily Dozen" that I have is so dark in it's lower right hand corner that I can't read the text to reconstruct. If anyone knows of any newspapers that carried Vignettes of Life that early please let me know. It was syndicated by the Philadelphia Ledger so if anyone can access microfilm of that paper please let me know.
Thanks,
Jon
-
Hi Jon,
I tried adding the file (after a slight rename) and it fails to work.
Downloads wont open it either.
Could you check it's Ok, maybe reupload it?
-
Yoc, I'm reuploading it. I think the problem was that the individual files were tiffs, and I guess cbz doesn't like that. I had them as tiffs since they were pure b&w. I've converted them to pngs and rezipped them. I checked and my cbreader, at least, will read the file.
-
I think PNG files wont show in our auto cover thumbnail but should be Ok for the Preview and CDisplay app.
-
Ok Jon, Vignettes of Life (1925) is now on the site.
Thanks again.
-
Vignettes of Life 1926 is on the FTP site now.
-
Now up, thanks very much Jon!
-
Now uploading Vignettes of Life 1924 (the first year starting with June) and A-1 126 (I'm a Cop #2). The latter is one of Jim's comics which I'm getting through slowly.
Jon
-
Jon Vignettes of Life 1924 I had no problem with moving that one over. Now A-1 126 I'm a Cop #2 it seem that one is a bad file, tried twice to move it over with no luck. But downloaded it to my HD and will upload it from there, it will take a bit of time though.
Geo
-
Geo,
If you check the 'Lastest Uploads' link you will see all three tries did work.
I'm removing the extras.

Kilroys #8 and #18 now going to FTP. Not my scans, just noticed they're not here.
Anyone got #7 30 33 51 53? We're real close on this series.
-
Now up, thanks very much Jon!
-
I got #33. Will try to get that up today or tomorrow. 7, 30, 51, and 53 appear to be unscanned.
-
Gasoline Alley 1918-9, 1920, 1921 going up to FTP. They're all pre-1923 so should be public domain by law. I'm guessing that many more years are as well. The Drawn & Quarterly books seem to indicate so. Does anyone know? None of these scans are from those books, BTW.
Jon
-
Now up, thanks Jon.
Not sure on the copyright. I hope you or John can figure it out. Hurts my head a lot when I try!
-
As long as we stop at 1922 until someone digs in, looks fine.
-
Out Our Way 1936 Sundays and dailies now on FTP in 3 files.
War on Crime (The Ledger Syndicate strip not the EC comic) coming soon
-
Now up, thanks Jon!
-
The tiff files don't seem to want to work in any reader I try. The only thing I found that works is renaming to zip and extracting and then using some image viewer.
Thanks for these. I know compiling these can be a chore and I am very grateful for all the effort involved.
-
I understand, but tiffs are much better for storing b&w images than jpgs. They can be losslessly compressed to a smaller size, but still have much better resolution when expanded. There is an initial jpg (a copy of the first file) in each zip for the preview. The uncompressed tiff files are about 40 times as big.
I think maybe pngs work in cbz (or are they cbp) files, but I prefer tiffs. If anyone wants to batch convert these to pngs, they have my blessing. Personally I just store them as individual files.
Glad you enjoy them.

Prime has uploaded a jpg conversion of the Sundays file gang.
There is a file size limit of about 100mb per file so Tiffs do mean less per file uploaded.
I'm not sure if PNG files work with the system Jon. I'll have to do a test.
-
What threw me initially was the cbz extension, if it was just zip I wouldn't have even mentioned it.
-
Hi,
I am probably sticking my nose in where it is not wanted. So apologies at the outset. But in my opinion .png is the way to go on these.
Reasons
1) cdisplay and I guess other readers handle them
2) php (which again I guess that you are using for the DCM viewer has .png functions so even if your viewer currently doesn't support them it is an easy change to make. I did it on CB+ a few months back.
3) .png gives better compression and is lossless . I just did a test on oow360105S.tiff
oow360105S.tiff in the archive is 1,079,954 bytes
I converted this to .png and then ran pngout a great utility that maximizes compression the end result 868,352 bytes. Again this may not make any difference to the archive file size as the .png is now very compressed, but it is quite a saving in the unzipped files.
As an aside I am becoming quite a fan of .png's. Especially for small graphics on websites that look OK with 256 colors. Although a bit bigger than the corresponding .jpg they just look that bit cleaner.
That's my nerdishness done for the day
-
Ok Jon.
I did a PNG test. Yes, you can use it. It works with CDisplay and the PREVIEW feature on DCM.
It does NOT work with the cover thumbnail feature. It shows as a black cover. Perhaps CaptDJ will add that ability someday.
So, if you want a cover to appear please continue to make the first file a jpg.
I suggest repeating it again as a PNG afterwards if you want the same quality as the following files.
At least your final cbz file sizes wont be as massive.
-Yoc
-
Jon, sorry but I'll have to delete your Sundays upload.
The giant cover thumbnail chokes that feature for all uploads afterwards so they are stuck at 'No Cover Yet.'
I'll have to delete his file to fix things.
Sorry :(
I've also found the TIFF files do not work with the PREVIEW feature. Only the first jpg file will show.
For now I hope you will consider using jpgs or PNG files for future uploads.
-
I've used irfanview to do a batch conversion of the tiffs to pngs and have sent a new Sunday file via ftp to the site.
But I have some questions.
What am I doing when I request a compression level? I'd like a lossless compression so I'd think I couldn't select a level of compression. I can't select 0 compression as the files are huge. A 6 (default) compression appears to be lossless, at least there are no gray edges when I look at a greatly expanded version in Gimp (Note Irfan view does show gray artifacts, but I think it's just that program as it does so with the Tiffs as well. In any case this is what I used.
Do I use PNGOUT? If so there are a bewildering set of options to chose from. Anyone have any ideas?
-
Sorry Jon, I just used the default 6.
Try Google or Wiki maybe?
-
I don't know anything specific about IfranView, Jon, but PNG's compression is lossless no matter the level. I think the levels are a throwback to the old days when compression and decompression took a long time and tied up the entire computer. Low levels of compression produce larger files, but "easier" to decompress. However, with today's computers, the space is probably much more important.

Jon,
Just a reminder, that first jpg image you add for our sake. Could you please make sure it's no more than 2mb in file size?
Really large jpgs will choke the auto cover thumbnail feature and any new uploads from that point will just show 'no cover yet.' It was that sign that told me we had a problem with one of your newspaper strips. All black thumbnails only show for PNG files.
Thanks again for all the uploads you've given us!

Another year of Out Our Way, 1929, has been FTPed to the site. Sundays and dailies in different files. .png files with a .jpg repeat of the lead file for a "cover" image.

Out Our Way 1930 dailies and Sundays now on the FTP.
And I think "we" should make a separate folder for Out Our Way inside Classic Newspaper strips.
-
Hi Jon,
I can do that but would you mind writing the blurb that describes the feature?
Date published, etc, etc.
Umm, Jon, you uploaded these as folders with files inside. I need a cbz or zip file collecting them together.
-
Oops Sorry will fix tonight and write teh blurb.

Starlet O'Hara #4 on FTP. It's a Twobyfour scan from a JVJ comic. I'm not sure why it isn't already here.
Also Bobby Benson #10 raw scans there. We have this comic already, but the scan is tiny. This is a new scan of a JVJ comic.
-
Thanks Jon!
-
Nice timing on the Starlet O'Hara #4, I was looking to see if we had a copy literally yesterday to see the Frazetta illos.
By dumb luck, I happened to get a couple of Standard books with Frazetta illos in a small batch I was bidding on for a different book entirely, will try and get those scanned fairly soon if the JVJ crew doesn't beat me to them; the find made me want to see what else we had available. (It was a good buy, 2 books with Frazetta text illos and March of Comics #3 for under $40 after shipping...)
Anyway, thanks for the upload!
-
I am baffled to see Starlet O'Hara #4 go up.
I hold the exact book (from JVJ) in my hands.
Scanned it last month, but hadn't uploaded it yet.
::)
So there'll be a different version coming, but I'll wait till spring or summer.
I hadn't requested that book, but Jim packed it for me. Filling up gaps in Standard titles.
My mind just boggles concerning this cosmic coincidence.
File it under "scanning bureaucracy glitch".
Jim is handling thousands of books - and I don't blame him.
-
I checked the date modified on my copy of Starlet O'Hara In Hollywood 04 (1949) (Standard) (JVJ-Two).cbr and it says March 15, 2010. That puts it pre-DCM and if I'm not mistaken the upload feature at GAUK was broken at the time.
Jim is handling thousands of books - and I don't blame him.
If all of us find it hard to keep track of the scans of his books, just think how hard it must be to keep track of the actual books. :P

Out Our Way 1928 dailies and Reg'lar Fellers 1928 Sundays now on FTP for putting into Classic Comic Strips
Also Charlton's Li'l Genius 7 8 10 11 (all 1956 or earlier) these are all my scans and Dell's edits (I think).
Also I finally have the rest of Jim's comics scanned as well as a bunch of my own comics scanned and am looking for editing help. I have the following:
JVJ's comics
American Air Forces 2-7 9-12 completing that ME series
my comics
Danger is Their Business (ME) #11 (A1-50) note it's not DI Our Business
Fighting Undersea Commandos (Avon) 5
Li'l Genius (Charlton) 14 15 23
Little Eva (St John) #8
Pixies (ME) #4
these are also on the FTP under RAW SCANS under my name (or at least going there now), but please let me know if you do grab any to edit.
-
Wow, thanks Jon!
Anyone helping with edits - please mark the folder of the book you are doing with your name.

Also, I grabbed the Hit 33 from the DC++ and upped it earlier.

In honor of the great Jumbo uploads, I looked through all our Jumbos and found I could do a tiny bit of improvement in replacing damaged or occasionally missing ibc and bc. Missing come from Heritage. Otherwise I grabbed good copies from other Fiction House comics when we had a damaged or fiche copy I could use for verification. Affected comics are:

Patches #1 (Orbit) sent to FTP. NMS don't know whose.
-
Is this the same Patches #1 that is sitting in Rural Home, where apparently the series started
-
Thanks Jon but this is the same JVJ book as ML mentions found in the Rural Home section.
-
Well that explains why I couldn't find it. The issues are published by
#1 Rural Home
#2 Ray R. Herman
#3,4, 7, 10 Patches Publications
but all are listed at 420 DeSoto ave St. Louis. Aren't they all from the same publisher?
-
I got a headache.
:(
-
420 DeSoto Ave, St. Louis, is a printer location, not a publisher location.
-
Back in the 1960's there was an Urban Legend among St. Louis area fans. Somewhere, stored away in company records, were five copies of every comic ever printed at 420 DeSoto Ave.
AFAIK, if they ever existed, they were never found.
