Title: Library of Congress Catalog Lists - books DCM could use scans from
Post by: movielover on July 28, 2013, 08:06:46 AM
This topic is directly related to the 'You can now scan comics at Washington's Library of Congress' (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/forum/index.php/topic,4690.0.html) topic also in this section - our thanks to Carl for discovering the public has access to the books and a scanner at the LOC.

I've been checking the Library of Congress catalog against what is still need here at DCM. I will be posting it as I go along.

A couple of notes- not all series are carried, and this is just a list of the catalog, the LOC might not still have these books, as some apparently walked out the door. >:(
Sending a request to the LOC will be the only way to confirm what they still have.  If you visit we suggest you prepare a list twice as long as you intend to scan just to be on the safe side.

First up, LOC books still needed on DCM from Lev Gleason
Boy Comics - Lev Gleason
   5(ifc, ibc fiche), 11(2 pages)(fiche), 13(43 fiche), 14(fiche), 24(fiche), 25(fiche), 27(fiche), 32(4 pages), 33(damaged), 35(7 pages), 36(fiche),  39(14 pages), 74(9 pages)?, 76(fiche)?
Crime Does Not Pay - Lev Gleason
   26(6 pages), 27(GM), 29, 30, 31, 35, 47, 68, 79(ifc,ibc,bc), 86(1 page), 92(2 damaged), 106(2 pages), 116(2 pages)(2 damaged), 117, 118, 128(ifc,ibc,bc), 137, 139, 140
Daredevil Comics - Lev Gleason
   16(4 pages), 19(fiche), 21(7 pages), 22(16 fiche), 23(2fiche), 27(4 pages?), 44(ifc,ibc,bc), 78(ibc,bc)
   28(36 fiche), 38(cf), 39(ifc,ibc) (These are BOUND)

Dang, that's sad news.
:(

I actually think that's (qualified) good news, not sad.  If a publisher with a moderately large body of work, such as Ajax-Farrell, has ZERO books at the LOC it's pretty much solid proof they never copyrighted anything in the first place and therefore all their work is guaranteed PD.

Do we know if books that are missing (in general, at least) are stolen or did the LOC dump books at some point?  I know there are a fair number of comics and pulps in the wild that have LOC stamps on the cover.

Jim,

I put in that there might be another book after the v36n5 because they list a v36n6. I did use GCD, way back in December when I started the CSNS list.

Thanks ML.
Having just helped with some Pep fixes I think several could use a rescan.  They were Heavily cropped and even Jon's upgrades could use a new version.

As I recalled I enlarged small scans and added inside covers after fiche verification, and yes almost all of them could stand rescans at some point.

Having said that, I'll be posting c2c versions of Torchy 5 (US) and Plastic Man 25 later tonight.

Not sure how viable it is to get scans if it's a bound volume, but you have no idea how much I would love for the last few issues of Target to be filled...

Noted Eric.  LOC does have the missing issues in bound volumes in their listings.

It looks like it's just #3 (with a missing CF), 6, 7, and 8 that are missing (or missing anything of consequence), which is not bad at all! I think it's quite an accomplishment to have that much of a title of that length!

Just opened this thread for the first time.  Is anyone still actively scanning these at the library of congress?  Saw a lot on the Quality list we need.  For example I've never even seen a listing on eBay for Forbidden Love and it looks like they have all four issues.

So all the numbers in black for an issue are available at LOC. Not surprising they would not have any Charltons
