Title: OtherEric's Uploads
Post by: OtherEric on April 15, 2010, 09:35:31 PM
Jingle Jangle Comics 005 now ready for download.  Missing 6 pages, unfortunately.   :'(  54 of 60 isn't too bad, though.

And with this issue we're down to 4 missing and 4 incomplete issues.  Even if I'm not the one to finish off the last few issues, this is another fairly long run I take pride in as one of "my" titles; aided by the generosity of JVJ.  Some classic stuff in these, the Carlson material in particular.  Enjoy!

I grabbed this one instead of another JVJ book for two reasons:  One, to polish off what I could scan on the Jingle Jangle run.  Two, because I'm going to send this issue to JVJ when I send back the next batch of his books.

Now ready for download:  Adventures of Peter Wheat 10 (incomplete)

This one is missing page 15; I found a very small scan of pg 16 so we can at least see how the story ends.

Even beyond the missing page this book was in bad shape; Yoc and Thom Buchanan from http://whirledofkelly.blogspot.com/ did an awesome job editing it into readable shape.  It has some beautiful and rare Walt Kelly artwork so I think it's well worth the effort and I owe both of them a huge favor for their efforts!  Everybody else, just enjoy.

Adventures of Peter Wheat 3 (NN) now ready for download!

And yes, I've got two more issues to post once they're ready and Thom has had a chance to debut them.  Both Kelly issues, in fact.

Wyatt Earp Frontier Marshal 21 from Charlton is going up as I type!

This is an interesting one; it's a 100 page issue.  I suspect it's fairly rare, since when I first got it in the early 90's Overstreet didn't even identify it as a 100 pager. (They did ID 20 as a 68 pager.)  It's cover dated September 1958 and has artwork by several names normally more associated with Atlas- Maneely, Severin, and Reinman.

I would love others to comment on the stories, I don't really see the Maneely art myself but I've seen the attribution several places.

Your wish is my command, Eric:
Maneely does
Double Doublecross!!
The Side of the Law
Fight or... Crawl

Severin does Wanted, but he probably has help on the inks or else he's doing a quick ink job with a brush - unusual. More typical job on Peacetown.

Molno or Nicholas plus inker on Sacred Vision

Paul Reinman signs.

Mastroserio signs Fast Gun, and the Earp story "Matson, yuh shot my brother!", and Six-Shooter Showdown.

Coule be Mastroserio on The Outcasts, but I can'd figure out who inks it - maybe Sal Trapani? Ditto on Lead for Tate Dooley.

Tony Tallerico on Six-Gun Voters

Cheyenne Kid "Fun With Pop" is Nicholas or maybe Molno and an inker.

I think The Rio Kid is Sol Brodsky.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

Who was LePoer that signed Wanted?
Molno is an artist I "sometimes" recognize. I would bet not Molno on Sacred Vision so would go with Alascia. Problem for me is always the fact they were inked which could make me completely wrong. The splash I see no Molno to the point I would rule him out so I would say Alascia. For what my opinion is worth

Le Poer is a Severin pen name.

Alascia was 100% inking at this stage in his career and you're right that these could be his inks - they seem a tad too "tight" for me to have guessed him, but he was certainly capable of this work. In all likelihood, they are not his pencils.

I'm just guessing on Molno, so if you're sure it's not him, I'm easily convinced.

Thank you both for the info and discussion.  The Maneely stories don't look like typical Maneely to me, bearing in mind I think I've got all of three non-reprint stories of his.  I can see it now that somebody says it, but I would not have made the leap myself.

And now, as a preview of a soon to appear Fox Giant...

Jo-Jo, Congo King #20 (No IFC, IBC)!  If anybody can fill in the two pages it would, as always, be appreciated.  Otherwise, just enjoy!

I'm just in a scanning frenzy tonight.

Famous Crimes 3 (No IFC, IBC) now ready for your enjoyment.

How to describe this book?  Let me see...

Overstreet apparently decided mentioning the SOTI reference, the injury-to-eye motif, and the TWO electrocution stories was enough to sell the book and didn't bother mentioning the crossdressing sequence.

 :P
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads
Post by: Yoc on June 24, 2010, 05:32:56 PM
lol, oh crossdressing too?  That would make it just too darn expensive wouldn't it?  ;)

Nice work Eric, I've just gotten them all now.

And now that you've seen some of the individual books with the covers partially restored, here's the Giant itself:

Almanac of Crime NN (1948) no IBC now ready for download

In addition to the Jo-Jo 20, the Western Thrillers 2, and the Famous Crimes 3 this book has a 16 page section that is not from a specific single book and a VERY off-register scan of Phantom Lady #19.  A much better scan of the PL #19 is on the way soon so I am not posting that issue separately and I would appreciate it if nobody pulls it out.

Crimes by Women #12 (no IFC, IBC) now ready for download.

This was one of the trickier issues to identify; it's not listed at GCD.  Luckily it had shown up on Scott Shaw's Oddball Comics several years ago.

On a personal note, "The Terror From Tacoma" is one of my all-time favorite comic book story titles.  Guess where I went to high school...
 ;D
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads
Post by: OtherEric on June 28, 2010, 11:28:26 PM
And the attack of the Fox Giant bits continues.  Next up is My Love Memoirs #12.  This one is rare enough that I couldn't find a cover anywhere online- or at least not much of one.  It's also listed in Overstreet and the GCD as having Wood art.  I'm not sure on that; the first story has some very Wood-esque panels alongside some real garbage.  If it was a couple years later I would say it's a bad effort at imitating Wood, but it's early enough that it might just be very early work of his.  I'm interested in what others think.

You'll have your answer.

Continuing my way through the Fox Giant Variety Comics...

Jungle Lil 1 (no IFC IBC) now ready for download.

I get the impression this one didn't do very well; it only lasted one issue before changing to Dorothy Lamour.  It shows up in two of the three fox giants I own, suggesting a lot of left-over copies.  (And yes, I know three books isn't a significant sample size.)

And two more going up:

Feature Presentations 5 (The Black Tarantula) no IFC IBC

Variety Comics NN (1950)
Contains coverless, rebound copies of:  Crimes by Women 12, My Love Memoirs 12, Jungle Lil 1, and Feature Presentation 5 (The Black Tarantula).  And a one page "Treasury of Pirate Lore" on the IFC you won't find in the other scans.

Whichever form you get the books in, enjoy!
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads

And I'm in a holding patter on my last Fox Giant as I debate how much I want to lower the grade to scan it; I literally took apart the first two but this one is in slightly better shape.

So, instead, you get Sparkling Stars #12 from Holyoke.  Enjoy!
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads

The Black Tarantula was a pretty horrific entry for a kids' comic.  Not really gory, but it'd give most forties horror movies a run for their money.
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads
Post by: OtherEric on June 30, 2010, 05:36:04 PM
That one was an oddball; it looks like they were trying to go for a little bit of a Classics Illustrated vibe without actually using a classic or doing something that would bore people, just fool parents.  Who knows?

Onto the last few books from the Giants:  Famous Crimes 16 now ready for download, in its no IFC IBC glory!

After some debate, I decided to cut apart the spine on the giant to get the best possible scans.  When I put back in the whole book staples it will still hold together since the covers are still glued to the first and back book.

Post by: OtherEric on June 30, 2010, 06:39:13 PM
Oh, I have some- even lots- of books where I couldn't bring myself to do that.  But since the whole point on buying the three Fox Giants was "hey, they're (relatively) cheap and may have some good scanning material" why not?

I actually think I did very well on the mix of books, given that I didn't know what was in them before ordering.
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads
Post by: OtherEric on June 30, 2010, 09:16:06 PM
And here's My Desire 4, no IFC IBC

This one has a fairly well known cover image, better known from its reuse on Charlton's True Life Secrets #23.  Amazingly, Fox actually has the classier of the two uses of the cover.
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads
Post by: OtherEric on July 01, 2010, 01:00:15 AM
Two books going up:

My Secret Story #29, no IFC IBC

Almanac of Crime (1950), which contains four rebound books:
   Famous Crimes #16
   My Desire Intimate confessions #4
   Jungle Lil #1
   My Secret Story #29
which have also been posted individually, and a "Felony Files" page on the IFC you can only get here.

I did not actually rescan the Jungle Lil, instead using the scan I got when I did Variety Comics.

Overall, I think this was a fairly neat batch of books.  If I ever find more Fox Giants in the under $50 range I'll probably grab them, too!

And back to the editing chair for me, now that I've got JVJ's targets scanned.  But we'll start off with a book of my own:

Adventures of Peter Wheat 32 now ready for download.  Thom posted it for me a while ago on his Whirled of Kelly blog, but it's good to have it here as well.

You're all welcome, I also just got the 1943-06-06 section up.  Which is not nearly as impressive, but still a nice book.  Still working on the Targets, 16 pages is so much easier to edit than 68...

I'm still amazed I got the Plaster of Paris story, as I think I said that's my all-time favorite Spirit.  And given how rare the Spirit sections in general are, and the post-1946 issues in particular, it's an issue I've wanted for years and years but never, ever expected to actually have a chance to get.  Does anybody know when the sections went from 16 pages to 8?  I know the exact date varied by paper, but I wonder what exactly the range is.

And a small post today, I finally found another issue of Peter Wheat News.  This one is only the comic pages, so I don't know what issue it is.  (I can narrow it down to about 11 possibles, but that's it.)   The story is part 2 of 3, so no beginning and no ending.  But it's four of the rarest pages of Walt Kelly art you'll ever see.

And several books from the JVJ collection today, plus one of my own:

First, from JVJ:  Target Comics v8 n07 and v8 n08 are both now ready for download.  In addition, I've filled Mark Orr's scans of v8 n05 so it's now cover to cover.  Jim didn't include the info cards on the 7 and 8, but I did put one in with the fills on the 5.  I particularly call your attention to the 8/7; the Bull's Eye Bill story is by Bernie Krigstein.

And, from myself, Peter Wheat #24 is now available, with 16 pages of rare Walt Kelly material.  This is part one of a 4-part story, 26 is already posted. (Haven't found a copy of 25, sadly. 27 will be on the way once Thom shows it off at Whirled of Kelly, though.)

In the very, very trivial fix department:

I've been checking Targets recently, seeing what books need fills and so on.  Steve Rogers' otherwise excellent scan of Target V7 N11 was missing a coupon on the last interior page- roughly 1/8 of the page, if that, on each side.  So small I wouldn't have worried other than I happen to have owned a copy of the book for years.

It's now C2C, for anybody who cares.

Look for more meaningful fills and whole new issues very soon.  Maybe even tonight, if I can finish another couple JVJ issues.

OE,

Just a quick question for you.  I had picked up a copy of Target v4 #2 last year, and had never gotten around to scanning it (full with JVJ stuff).  Is that a project that you have in the wings, or should I kick it out?

And one more on my weekend, Target v07 n12 is now ready for your enjoyment.

While me and Geo would need to check, I THINK we have all the holes from Target v4-v7 scanned at the moment and being edited as fast as I can.  But at least some of those issues are damaged and incomplete, and I can't remember which ones until I get to them on the editing.  We've also got fills for several of the posted issues, and I'm hoping to get a few more holes filled on my own very soon.

And one quick fix, since I got the book in the mail today:  Target Comics V9 N6 is now cover to cover, I found an amazingly cheap copy.  I had earlier gotten a coverless copy that I think I gave to JVJ.

The cover on this one- I kept the heritage scan for that- is just amazing.  Not remotely Politically Correct, but the design, composition, and coloring is just extraordinary.  It jumps out at you from a mile away; I can't imagine seeing this on the stands and not going right for it.

Unless something goes wrong on my order we'll have every issue of Target from v7-v10 C2C before very long, that includes the two issues we're currently missing.  Still a LOT of JVJ books to come from 4-7, as well.

Thanks again for adding all of the Target issues, Eric. This probably has to be one of the best weeks in DCM history, as far as I'm concerned. It's just been a wealth of riches -- Targets and Police Comics and Better Nedor books galore. The stars must have really aligned or something.  ;) :D

Tight on time the past week, but I've updated Target Comics V7 N1:  original scanner unknown, fills & info card by me courtesy of JVJ's collection.  I hope to get to a few more issues from V7 over the next few days.

On another note, I just got Target 9/10 and 9/12 in the mail today.  I always worry when I admit I've ordered something before I actually get it; I'm afraid Murphy's Law will strike.

And working on the fills...

Target Comics v8 n12 is now C2C.  When I did the original scan of JVJ's copy I could NOT find a copy of the cover bigger than the one at the GCD.  But a very cheap copy popped up so I grabbed it.  Enjoy!

Target Comics V10 N02 C2C copy now available.  Original scans by jodyanimator, fills by me, cover from Heritage since mine has a dime-sized paper pull on it.

I don't know how jodyanimator feels about others doing fills on their books; if you're out there and have a problem, please let me know!

I've said this before and will probably say it again:  L. B. Cole just did some truly amazing covers, and the ones he did for Target are just standouts even for him.

And the Fills continue:  Target Comics V9 N7 is now C2C!  Not sure who the original scanner on this one was- it was showing as Yoc's upload, though.  And I went ahead and rescanned all of the cover, not just the one missing page, since the original copy was pretty beat up there.  Enjoy!

My insomnia is your gain:  Target Comics V7 N6 now ready for download, thanks to JVJ.

If you look at the Target Comics listing, you will see several saying "updated" today.  Most of those were me getting picky and making sure the issue names were consistent- I had used lowercase and uppercase "V" fairly randomly in the past.  :D
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads

And Target Comics V8 N3 is now C2C.  I also rescanned the front cover, since the original file was labeled as "poor".

And with this one, I can now with some pride report that all issues of Target Comics from v7 n6 up are now cover to cover paper scans!  I'm happy with my fill efforts here, as you can possibly tell. ;D

I have both the 9/10 and 9/12 to scan, Jon. I want to finish editing the rest of v7 from JVJ before I get to those, however.

I wasn't trying to say we had all the issues from a certain point yet, just that the ones we do have from that point are now all C2C.  There were quite a few issues needing fills.

And contrary to my statement of a few hours ago, Jim's V7 N3 is is pretty rough shape and I'm going to be taking a while to edit it; I may even wind up farming that one out to one of the experts around here.  We'll see how it goes.

So, onto other stuff.

From JVJ's collection:  Target Comics V7 N4 is now ready for download.

From my collection:
Now that Thom has had a chance to debut it at Whirled of Kelly, Adventures of Peter Wheat #27 is now available here as well.  This is part 4 of a 4-part story, I've also posted the 24 and 26.  Even with #25 missing this is a very impressive bit of work by Walt Kelly; and a VERY long story for the Golden age.

Target Comics V9 N10; another nice LB Cole cover on this one

Target Comics V9 N12, this one has what the Overpriced Street Guide considers a Classic Cover.  Not quite sure about that, but it is a really nice one.  Even if I went with a copy of the cover from heritage since my copy has a store stamp in the logo, mine still looks impressive. And these two are the only late issues of Target we were still missing.

Enjoy them all, thanks again to JVJ, and I think I'm done for the week.  8)

Target Comics v4 n3 and v5 n3, both originally bhcomics scans uploaded by Freddyfly, are now C2C thanks to JVJ.

And Target v4 N10 is now ready for download, once again thanks to the collection of JVJ.

At this point, all the Targets I have the scans for are done, but I a) should be getting the scans Geo did to help me get the books back to Jim quickly soon; and b) have several other issues on the way.  So more very soon!

Like I said, I had a few Target issues on the way.  They arrived today, and while some of them will require a LOT of work, some of them are super-easy to work with.  (As an aside, it's amazing how much a little restoration can drop the cost of a book.)

Target Comics v2 n3 ready for download.  This one has TWO Spacehawk stories- in addition to the regular story, the text story features him as well.  Wolverton gets the byline on it, and it's reasonably clever.  Even if somebody ghosted the story the half-page illo is definitely Wolverton.

One thing I would like the experts to chime in on:  The White Streak story has a Carl Burgos byline, but the GCD credits Emil Gershwin.  I don't know enough about either artist to be sure, but the byline does not look like they're using Burgos as a house name- and the Streak looks a bit like the Human Torch to my eyes.

Anyway, Enjoy!
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads

Hate to say it but I think it is a little too good to be pure Burgos but I see a lot of him in it. My bet would be a two man job.

And here's Target Comics V02 N04.  We had partial scans of about half this issue, but most of those were small size.  This is the whole book, all freshly scanned and complete.

While I have v2 n6 and n7 to scan as well, I think I'm going to jump ahead to one of the hard ones:  v2 n12.  This one is so brittle I suspect I'll need to take it apart to scan it, and wind up with a JVJ-style binder with page protectors when I'm done.  (I'm so sure of this I already have the page protectors and binder ready, in fact.)  Wish me luck that I get a scan out of this before the book goes poof!
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads

Some of Jim's books that I scanned basically had a spine in name only. The first turning of a page and it fell apart. Jim knew they were in that condition and did not get upset. Great guy
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads

And after several hours of work...

The Patient, Target v2 n12, will need to stay in its protective sheets.  But despite having lost all "collector" value, it has a long life ahead of it as a readable book in my collection, instead of a brittle "investment" that I can barely risk opening the cover on.  (Although that very brittleness made it not cost very much at all for that particular book.)

The rest of you get a scan to enjoy; as is usual with Targets from this era the highlight is a Wolverton Spacehawk story.  Enjoy!

Once you discover that reading the book is more important than "collecting" it, many cost-saving options arise, Eric - like the stick the brittle pages into sheet protectors. I don't recall how or when I stumbled across that approach, but it was a practical alternative to watching the pages disintegrate every time I wanted to refer to the book. Glad you can appreciate it, as it bespeaks well for your love of the medium.

Probably another case of a GCD entry by someone who never saw the book in question. Most definitely NOT Gershwin (who will eventually be the subject of the next Alter Ego "The Great Unknowns" column - when Roy eventually finds space) and most assuredly IS Burgos. The wonderful plethora of spinning head speed lines is just one of many giveaways to the Burgos style.

As long as we're looking at artist ID's, here's something BobS posted in the comment section for the Target v2 n4

BobS
Comment:    I MOSTLY HIGHLY recommend this book for the Target and the Targeteers story and especially the art! Don't miss it! (George) "Inky" Roussos is a character in the story and it appears that Roussos inked the story (Bob Wood signed the art), or Roussos or Roussos and Robinson ghosted the art entirely. The art looks just like Batman art of the era, down to names written on building fronts and stock Batman poses. Way cool story!!! Bob

Any comment on that one, Jim?  I have to admit it looks a lot like a Batman story from around then to me, as well.

Target Comics V02 N10 now ready for download.

This book was also brittle, but I had hopes of keeping it together through the scanning since it was, on the surface, better than the 2-12.  No such luck, it was in slightly higher grade but worse actual shape.  Still, scans were successfully obtained and I had the binder ready in case.

As usual with the early Targets, the highlight here is Spacehawk.  Enjoy!

And here's Target Comics V02 N06, ready for download.  Luckily this one is in better shape than the 2/10 and 2/12, and stayed together when I scanned it.

Oh, just to clarify something that came up in comments on the issues on the download page:  These recent early Targets, unlike most (but not all) of the v4 and up I've been posting the past couple months, are from my collection, not JVJ's.  I got his early Targets a couple years ago in one of my first batches of his books; these are from a bunch I found recently in beat up and therefore affordable shape.  JVJ deserves praise to the heavens for his sharing of books, but I do want credit for occasionally finding things on my own, too!

Most importantly, one way or another we have the books now.  So enjoy another Wolverton Spacehawk story and lots of other fun features in this one!

Sorry, no Blue Bolts.  Right now the pile is 2 more new Targets, one Target (3-4) that I want to rescan because it was one of my first books scanned and I'm ashamed to look at the original version now, and one Jingle Jangle.  Plus I should get several more Target scans from Geo to edit from JVJ's collection.

I have no idea what caused that.  It also seems that no books after that huge cover have created cover previews.
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads
Post by: OtherEric on May 03, 2011, 03:04:18 PM
Well, a quick check shows that for some reason the cover wasn't resized when I batch processed the files, unlike all the other pages.  Not sure why not, but I've resized the cover and deleted and reuploaded the file.  If nothing else, it instantly fixed the thumbnails on the other issues.

For those of you who already downloaded the book, I wouldn't bother changing versions.  The only difference is the smaller front cover, and since the old one works fine otherwise there's no need.

And now we draw to the end of JVJ's Target collection, with V4 N8; once again from Geo and me.  JVJ's copy was missing several pages in the middle, and I was able to find a cheap copy- which had other pages damaged that were fine in JVJ's copy, so both were needed to get the whole book to you!

We also reach the end of my Target collection, with V2 N7 being the last of the batch I recently got.  Wolverton is as usual the highlight here.  I do plan to rescan my V3 N4 soon- maybe even tonight- since it was one of my first scans ever and deserves a better presentation.

Does that mean there are no more Targets forthcoming?

Other than the rescan of the v3 n4- which is over half done as I type- there are no more Targets coming from me unless and until I get more issues.  I'm definitely looking for the issues we're missing, but since mostly they're v1 we're getting into pretty high end territory. I made another post discussing what we still need, other than fills we're missing 9 issues; 3 of those 9 we have the Target story alone.
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads

And the completely rescanned and reedited version of Target Comics v3 04 is now ready for people.  A quick glance back at the forums over at GAC shows that the original was actually my first ever scan, or at least tied with Police Comics 85 for that honor.  I rescanned the Police Comics a long time ago; this one was well past due.

The new version is far from perfect, since the book is still not in the best of shape to start.  But at least to my eyes this version is vastly better.  Please update your copies accordingly.

I'm about 90% sure this is the last Fearless Flint story, even if it does end on a cliffhanger.  This is the last 68 page issue of Famous Funnies; with 110 it drops to 60.  And Fearless Flint, unlike most of the stories, does not have a "continued next issue" blurb in the 109.

I'll get around to the rest of the issue, minus Buck Rogers, eventually; as well as the few other issues I have.  For now, enjoy this story.

And after a few weeks where it may have seemed like I wasn't scanning much, but was (and you'll see most of it eventually), we now have a batch that will make it look like I was scanning like a maniac but wasn't really that many pages total:

8 issues of 4 Most comics now upgraded to C2C, with info cards also added.  All courtesy of JVJ!

In other good news, while I haven't completely checked the books I got from JVJ for all pages yet, it looks like by the time I'm done with this batch we'll have the complete run of 4 Most.  More generally, we're going to be getting fairly close to having the complete output of Novelty once I get my hands on JVJ's Blue Bolts in a batch or two.

And got a couple books done this weekend, one of which you won't see for a little bit yet.

But here's one that's ready now:  4 Most Comics v8 n3, courtesy of JVJ.  This one has a story as well as cover by LB Cole.  Which shows that, while he was definitely not a bad artist on interiors, his real genius was in covers.

On a positive note, I seem to be back to a happy pace on scanning; not too much in a rush, not a stack of books that refuses to shift from "to do" to "done".  And I'm having fun!

And now to my collection for my latest find.

Journey back to January of 1941 (Or, more likely, late 1940) for Target Comics v1 n12.  The highlight here is, as usual, Spacehawk.  This is Wolverton at his absolute prime on the series; where the character is firmly established but before editorial brought the character back to Earth.  Amazing stuff.

But if Spacehawk is the highlight, it's still in good company.  This issue also has Tarpe Mills "Fantastic Feature Films" series bringing us "Satan's Colors", a White Streak story by Carl Burgos, and the third appearance of Target & the Targeteers by Bob Wood.

As you may have gathered, I just love these early issues of Target.  Only half a dozen more to go for the full run, minus a few fills.  Unfortunately, this issue does need fills for the IFC and IBC as well.  Yay for Heritage for the FC and BC, at least!

Enjoy!

Now that Thom has given the issue it's debut over at

I'm very happy to share Adventures of Peter Wheat #15 with everybody!  16 more pages of rare Walt Kelly goodness.

As most of you know, Peter Wheat has been my pet project for a couple of years now.  It's just amazing stuff that, at the risk of sounding immodest, was almost completely unknown before I started sharing what I could find.  Enjoy, and I encourage you to give the series a look if you haven't yet!

And from JVJ's collection: 4 Most v7 n2 is now ready for download.

For those of you who have figured out I'm working backwards on the full issues of the title:  Don't worry, v7 n3 is on its way before too long; it's missing the centerfold and I'm considering my options (and looking at online stores) before I post it.

4 Most v6 n2 is now ready for download, thanks to JVJ!

Update on the v7 n3:  I have a copy on the way, so that one will be posted once I get the fills.  Part of me feels weird borrowing a book from JVJ and then snagging my own copy, as if it will look like I'm saying Jim's isn't good enough.  But it's really saying:  "Thank you for letting me borrow and share this pile of 50 books, only one or two of which I could afford on my own.  Finding one of yours missing pages just tells me where to point my own limited efforts."

Sorry for the delays in anything getting up here, just a slight time crunch mixed with another project.  I'll have more of JVJ's novelty books up very soon.

Meanwhile, here's a trio of Adventures of Peter Wheat 34-36.  I would really like to hear from any other Kelly fans on these, 34 and 35 are stated in multiple sources to be by Walt Kelly.  But they don't look like he had much if anything to do with them, and they don't look that much like Hubbard either.  If it was just Overstreet saying they were Kelly, I would disregard it.  But I'm pretty sure Maggie Thompson has also said they're Kelly and I respect her knowledge on the subject.  So, any thoughts?

Geez, I'm not sure Eric.

Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads

I agree with Yoc.  I don't know if someone tried to imitate Kelly or if Kelly handed off unfinished stuff to assistants.  Maybe they had someone do a couple while searching for a new permanent person and the "these are by Kelly" comments are more "we know precisely when Hubbard started so these must be by Kelly."

Well, it's known that Kelly had an assistant(s) and that his(their) job was to present finished work that looked like Kelly. This looks like Kelly in many ways, but, as you note, Eric, in other ways it doesn't. Kelly is most in evidence in the most prominent characters and fades off into not even being there as the importance lessens.

My GUESS is that these are roughly penciled by Kelly with more detail/attention being given to Peter Wheat and a few other characters, with finished pencils and inks on everything by George Ward (and perhaps others).

FWIW.

That sounds about right, Jim.  Or at least as good a guess as we're likely to get at this point.  I'm also thinking that, if Kelly worked on the 34 and 35, he also did some work on the 37.

More generally, issues 34-37 of Adventures are a creative mess.  One thing I will mention about Kelly's involvement:  There's no way on Earth he wrote any of those issues.  The storytelling in these are a complete mess, and I even think it's possible parts of the story in 35-37 were originally meant for something else.  Going from an underwater story back to the surface to fight the Wizard, then dispatching him so quickly they have time to build a house before they go back underwater?  The only way I can make any sense out of this is there was a sudden need for pages and they took pages from elsewhere- possibly a 3-part, 12-page serial for Peter Wheat News- and shoved it in to get the 35 and 36 done in time.  This might also explain why Kelly looks completely absent from the 36 but, at least to me, looks to have some slight involvement in the 37.  (Or at least as much in the 37 as the 35; his involvement in both is minimal if it's there at all.)

I find these issues fascinating, hinting as confusion behind the scenes as Kelly left the title and headed off with Pogo to the newspapers.  I just don't find them good.
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads

I'm with you all the way Eric and Jim.
Hints of Kelly but only in the leads and the stories are pretty lame as Eric noted.  That jumped out at me right off.  But they are certainly worth reading if for nothing to see Kelly slowly leaving the title to other, less cabable (IMO) hands.

Everyone owes you a huge debt of thanks for bringing so many of these issues to light Eric.  Without your passion for the title we'd still be in the dark.  I know I would have been and I'm a Big Kelly fan!

The weird thing is that the transition between creative teams was so messy.  The definite Connell/ Hubbard issues are, while not in Kelly's league, are really quite well done.

And you're very welcome, Yoc.  Thanks for what I've done has been largely indirect; but I know from links and other things that I've had an impact with these scans.

Thanks for the reupload Eric.  If you or any other scanners still want to include an extra large cover on their uploads please just add a normal sized version FIRST so our Auto Cover Thumbnail feature doesn't crash choking on a massive cover.
Title: Re: OtherEric's Uploads
Post by: OtherEric on October 27, 2011, 09:14:35 PM
For some reason, if I edit a cover in paint (as I did on this one), when I save that and then put it through photoshop the auto resize frequently fails.  While I will upload larger versions on occasion, I didn't mean to do it on this one.

If you want to see what I did to edit it, compare to the version on Thom's Blog:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GNuItlP8brc/TpPFZTsf5zI/AAAAAAAAQJk/UWxeQo4evbw/s1600/PeterWheat%252321-01_100.jpg

If nothing else, it's interesting to see how two different editors tackle the same page.

Some of you may have been wondering why I was worrying about what to do with an issue of Famous Funnies with a Buck Rogers cover over in another thread.  Some of you may have even guessed...

Famous Funnies #216 now ready for download, minus the Buck Rogers pages.

The reason I could afford this book was some bug in the past decided to nibble on the lower right corner of the book.  He was a quite polite bug, though, and while he frequently hit the panel borders on all but 4 pages he stopped before he was all the way through.  A very narrow strip, about 3 inches by 1/2 inch. And while I had to edit the cover slightly- and failed to quite accurately recreate the one finger on Buck that was damaged- that's the cover of my copy in the scan, not a grab from heritage.  The damage is admittedly non-trivial, but it really doesn't detract from the general beauty of the cover.  And it gets us a good scan of a very hard to obtain book.  For an almost embarassingly low cost to me.

Enjoy the book, I'm off to just stare at the cover some more.  For all that I've seen reproductions of the Frazetta covers for years, they don't do justice to the original.

Good news.  I'm well back onto the scanning wagon, and hope to get quite a few JVJ books up over the next few weeks so I can get them back to him.  First, though, one more from my own collection:

Adventures of Peter Wheat #38 now ready for download.

I've got 3 Kelly issues waiting in the wings, as well.  But Thom from Whirled of Kelly has plans for at least some of the scans, so they might take a while to make it here.  They'll be worth the wait, though.  Meanwhile, enjoy Del Connell and Al Hubbard as they deliver a story about a Mushroom Village that seems to have been created under the influence of one of the more interesting types of mushrooms...  ;D

Trying to get back on track scanning, I'm right now rushing JVJ's books to get them back to him and they'll show up once I've got them edited.  This one is mine, however, and it's being with minimal editing:

Famous Funnies 210, no Buck Rogers.

A bug decided to eat the top of the book, and this one wasn't as nice as the one who chewed on the 216:  there's some slight panel damage.  It still looks pretty good, though, as the book is otherwise in exceptional condition:  If it wasn't Poor it would be VF easy!

I've got raw scans if anybody wants to try working on this; I think somebody more skilled than I in photoshop could really do some nice work on most of the pages.

And it's been far, far too long since I posted.  Sorry about the delay; a very good friend of mine (not family but might as well be) passed away suddenly.  So that's eaten up far too much of my time the past few weeks.

However, I'm back on the wagon again, I've got one of JVJ's books on the scanner as I type (and am getting much closer to the bottom of the pile in general), and I've got some stuff that was scanned a while ago ready to go.

Adventure of Peter Wheat 22, 25, and 30, all by Walt Kelly!  This actually gives us a run from issues 20-30 complete (along with a damaged copy of 19), including the four part Fairy Queen storyline in issues 24-27.  Some absolutely astounding work by one of the all-time greats.  I'm convinced the main reason the story from 24-27 isn't regarded as one of the all-time classics is that almost nobody had the chance to see it before now.

Special thanks to Yoc for his editing help on the #30, by the way.  There was a ugly stain across several pages that is gone entirely thanks to him.

So, was going to pass on the JVJ books to somebody else to do, only there was a brief delay and some communication issues there.  Then I took a look at my situation an realized that the major reason I had dropped off from scanning so dramatically have by and large passed, and sat down to scan a few books.  A couple of the books I'm posting today were scanned a long time ago and just not edited (and in fact are now alternate versions of books somebody else posted) , but a couple are in fact just scanned the past few days.  We'll see what happens; if I can actually keep up the correct pace I'll just finish the box.  Otherwise I'll go ahead and ship them off to the alternate scanner.

Everybody else?  Just enjoy the books!

So, was looking over Movielover's amazing "books still needed" list while chatting with Yoc last night and I noticed that The Spirit #5 from Fiction House was missing two pages.  I've had a VERY incomplete copy of the book for years, picked up mostly because the cover was amazing even if only two of the four stories inside were complete.  Which explains why it never made it onto my scanning pile.  But at least I can provide the IFC IBC and give us a complete, C2C run of that particular publisher's run on the title.

Trying to get things back together to start scanning what I have, but delays seem to keep turning up.  Have a little fill for tonight.

I recently bought a small batch of random GA tearsheets for $11 with shipping.  One of the two reasons was it had the Pie-Face Prince story from Jingle Jangle 5, our copy was missing the first two pages.  The issue is still incomplete, but now it's only missing 4 pages, not 6, and we have both Carlson stories complete now.

The other story, which I can't share here, was the Scribbly story from Big All-American Comic Book.  I don't ever see myself affording the original of that one, but having the Scribbly story at least in non-reprint form is a nice little addition to my personal collection!

And now that I don't have JVJ's box, I'll try to get a few of my own books that I've gotten scanned.  Starting with one that just came in the mail today, from a title near and dear to my heart:

Adventures of Peter Wheat #18 ready for download.

The remaining issues are showing up even less often on eBay, and the prices are getting crazy when they do.  You don't want to know what I paid for this one.  But I'll keep getting them when I can!

And here's issue 64 of Adventures of Peter Wheat as well.  I've had this one for a few months, but might as well get them both up.  This one isn't by Kelly, though.

I suspect this may actually be the last issue, despite what most sources say.  I have found exactly zero indication 65 and 66 actually exist, and I've at least seen small images of the covers of most of the rest of the issues.  If so, I suspect it's actually Peter Wheat News that made it to 66.

A minor upgrade:  I finally, after nearly 4 years, sourced a cover for My Love Memoirs 12 from Fox.  And have some other scanning projects in the pipeline, including another Fox book with a Wally Wood story and some 3-D comics.

And, while I'm starting to work on the 3-D books, also trying to knock out some simpler projects as well.

Coo Coo Comics 47 (c2c) now ready for download.

For those of you who might not otherwise bother with funny animal books:  This issue has 7 pages of Frank Frazetta art; 2 text pages and a 5 page story featuring a rather familiar alligator who looks like he wandered in from somebody else's comic...

And how do I follow up when 2 of my last 3 books have featured either Walt Kelly or Frank Frazetta?  With Wally Wood!  March of Crime 2 (Fox, 1950 series) is now ready for download.  The Wood story is described in Overstreet as "exceptional", I believe the only time they felt the need to describe a story as such.  Not sure I would tag it like that, but it's definitely the best work for Fox I've seen from him.

And I had been holding off on these hoping to keep attention away from the fact the seller was going to bring a few more to auction.  But, since I lost on the 50 and 58 tonight (which went for $425 the pair); I figure there's no reason to keep these hidden any longer.

Peter Wheat News 60 and 63 ready for download.  You will note these are only the 7th and 8th issues we've been able to get in the 6 years I've been looking; and 2 of the ones we have are just the comic pages.  So very rare stuff I'm quite happy to share.  And we now have the start and finish of the story in 61-63; maybe sometime this decade we'll get at least one complete story!

Super Animals 3D from Star is now ready for download, so break out those red/blue glasses!  This is one of the 3 3-D comics from the 50's that Gerber has at an 8 scarcity, to go along with the Space Kat-ets we got a few weeks ago.  Now to start scanning the Peter Cottontail...

If anybody wants to have a go at the raw scans, to either clean them up better or to create a 2-D B&W version, please let me know and I'll get them to you.  Everybody else, enjoy!

Here comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down the bunny trail!

Peter Cottontail 3D now available for download.  And with it we have all three of the 3-D books Gerber has tagged at 8 scarcity.

As with the Super Animals, raw scans are available upon request if somebody wants a go at improving them.  The book itself was reprinted as Peter Cottontail 2 in non-3D, so it would probably be easier to get that than create a 2-D version.

We now have most of those rare books?

OK, in terms of 3-D books:

There were only 48 3-D newsstand comics during the 50's boom, plus 2 books that had 1 story in 3-D you needed to get the glasses from elsewhere on.  This doesn't count giveaways, which are pretty much the Disney Cheerios ones we can't use or reprints of newsstand books.

There are 12 3-D books of the 48 we can't host here: 2 EC, 2 DC, 2 Atlas, 3 Mighty Mouse, 1 Katy Keene, 1 Sad Sack,  and 1 Felix.  We also had to remove one story from 3-D Dolly.

There were 3 3-D books that Gerber marked as 8; all 3 are useable here and we now have all 3.

There are 17 books Gerber had tagged as 7's; we can't use all of those and we're missing several.  While the three books Gerber had as 8's all seem to be pretty scarce, some of the books he had tagged as 7's are way off base, possibly closer to 5's.  Some of them really are that scarce, though.

Overstreet only lists one 3-D book as "scarce", First Christmas, Gerber has that as a 7.  I've got a copy and it will be forthcoming fairly soon.  The only really hard to find 3-D book I think we'll be missing after that would be Animal Fun; although a few others aren't exactly common that's the only one that looks to me to be a real problem left.

So, yeah.  We've got most (but not all) of the harder 3-D books we can use here now either scanned or on the way soon.

Probably more of an answer than you wanted, as you can tell it's a bit of pet project at the moment for me!

And, as I mentioned when I posted those last two issues of Peter Wheat News, somebody else had gotten into the bidding and I wasn't able to get some other issues they posted.  That's the bad news.

The good news?  They were generous with photos with their listings, so there was enough material to post the books in readable form.  Yoc has done a heroic job on the images, and while both of us hold out hope for real scans the books are so rare I'm overjoyed to be able to share them with everybody.  A HUGE thank you to Yoc for his editing efforts, and I'm elated that we have as much to share as we do from this incredibly elusive title.

We actually now have 4 arcs where we have 2 of the 3 issues; I actually have hope we may have at least one complete story at some point in my lifetime.

And the great Peter Wheat quest marches on.  Today I have Adventures of Peter Wheat #48 for everybody to enjoy; one of the Hubbard issues.

Although I don't necessarily have scans good enough to post even as placeholders at the GCD, this is the last issue from 1-64 I had never seen a cover for before now. I still have never seen the covers to 65 and 66, and at this point I'm assuming that contrary to what various guides say that they simply don't actually exist.  I do have proof that News made it to 66, and no reason to suspect that it made it past that.  So at this point I think the actual runs were 1-64 for Adventures and 1-66 for News; I feel about 95% sure on both.  And allowing for the fact I want to upgrade 10, 14, and 19; only 23 issues of Adventures to go.  Progress is being made even if it's slowing down.

Two more Peter Wheat News issues for everybody today.  I only got the comic pages, although I was able to find a low-quality source for the cover on one of the issues, #26.  The other issue has to be either 47 or 65, unless I'm wrong and the series ran past #66.  Given that the 4 issues that the seller had were 24 (which I lost), 26, 63 (which I already had), and the unknown one, I'm leaning towards the 65; but it's not a very strong lean.  Strong enough to list it first as the two possible numbers, though.

Anyway, 2 very rare books, one of them with 4 pages of amazing Walt Kelly art.  Enjoy!

And another issue of Peter Wheat News just went up.

Sourced from an auction listing I didn't win and just now rediscovered on my computer. Not the best quality but better than nothing, and I think not bad considering.

I'm about 65% sure this is actually 48; with a 33% chance of it being 66 and about 2% chance the series actually ran past 66 and this is some higher number. I'll go with 48 for sorting purposes but don't quote me on that without the qualifiers.

And I've dug up a couple more items that I've had for a bit but hadn't yet scanned...

We have an upgraded copy of Adventures of Peter Wheat #14.  The first copy I found was insanely low grade and damaged, and while Yoc and Thom were able to do some amazing editing work on the book to make it quite readable and enjoyable, I was never going to be satisfied with that version.  I have a new version up from a new copy I won, and I highly encourage everybody to replace their old scan.

The next is the April 1, 1945 Spirit Section.  I've had this for at least a year or two, and didn't realize I hadn't scanned it until I was grabbing a bunch of other Spirit Sections scans and saw it wasn't on the site. Not sure how it slipped by.  70 years old give or take 3 1/2 weeks; how time files!

And I've been remiss in my scanning, with quite a few books to get up. But let's start with the one I got in the mail today:

Adventures of Peter Wheat 41 now ready for download.

This gives me/us 43 issues, not counting the 10 and 19 which needs upgrades.  So, if I'm right and 65 and 66 don't exist, this breaks the 2/3 mark on the series.  I just may be able to finish this at some point!

Thank you Eric for the update. How many more do we need to complete the series now?

Geo

Somewhere between 19 and 22 issues.

We simply need the following 19 issues of Adventures of Peter Wheat:

4 (nn), 5 (nn), 6, 9, 11, 13, 16, 17, 31, 39, 49-51, and 58-63

We have a copy of 10, but although Yoc and Thom did some amazing editing and we've located low-grade scans of the missing last 2 pages, we really could use an upgrade.

Most sources claim the series went to #66; I'm 98.5% certain it actually ended at 64 and it's Peter Wheat News that went to 66.  But if I'm wrong, we need those two.

And, another issue of my pet obsession.

Adventures of Peter Wheat 11 now ready for download.  Some absolutely amazing Walt Kelly art in this one, even by the already high standards of the series.

Will have some more Peter Wheat very soon, and I swear I'll get to my other books on the pile before too much longer.

And more Peter Wheat, in this case a very rare complete issue of Peter Wheat News, not just the comic pages.  This is issue 23, so it's the middle chapter of a 3 part story.  Still, some very rare Walt Kelly art for everybody to enjoy; and actual scans rather than photos snagged from an eBay listing.

And another Peter Wheat News, issue 56.  So this one is by Hubbard, and once again it's a middle chapter with no beginning and no end.  But, every find helps on this title.

Still scanning, but I should have Adventures of Peter Wheat #50 up later today, as well.  We've got at worst 20 issues left to go, more likely 18.  I can't quite see the end of that tunnel but I'm starting to believe the end does exist.

I've probably said this before, but the Peter Wheat stories are among my top favorites on DCM. Walt Kelly was, of course, great, but even Hubbard was no slouch and kept the series going in the proper spirit. The stories are just the right length and the lack of overt plugging for commercial baking is salutary Great stuff.

I really need to get caught up on my scanning, I've got at least a dozen books I need to get up here.  But for tonight...

I actually got one of the Bell Bakeries mini-issues of Peter Wheat.  The bad news is, it's the same one we already have here rather than one of the other 8 (or more, who knows) issues we don't have.  The good news is, it's high-rez scans from a high-grade copy rather than digital pictures of a low-grade copy.

Packed with lovely Walt Kelly art!  We've also included a new introduction by Eric, the original pages as they appeared when given away and a special Peter What Poster!

So, I've been slow on scanning.  Not that much to scan, and just busy overall.

But, as you all know, I'm always able to make time when I have more Peter Wheat stories to share.

I'm always particularly excited when I have Peter Wheat News issues to share, since they're so rare.  In my several years of searching for the title, I had only found 15 issues to date, our other issues are mostly from photos posted to eBay.

Today I got a package of 12 issues, comic pages only.  10 of which we need for the site.  I'm quite happy, to say the least.

Posting the first few issues now, I should have 8 total issues up in the next day or so.  The last two will get posted once Yoc and I manage to put together the second Peter Wheat News omnibus, since we have the pages for a second complete story.  So enjoy some very rare Walt Kelly work, as well as some fun stuff from Del Connell and Al Hubbard.

Side note:  A couple of the issues have some crayon on them, mostly in the gutters.  If anybody wants a crack at cleaning them up, let me know and I can get you copies of the raw scans.

Yoc quickly offered to clean up the crayon and otherwise improve the edits on the Peter Wheat News issues I recently obtained.  The 10 and 11 are brand new offerings, the other 6 issues have all been substantially improved, I suggest upgrading all issues even if you already grabbed them.

And coming soon:  Our 2nd Peter Wheat News Omnibus, featuring an incredibly rare 12 page Walt Kelly story, only 4 pages of which have been previously posted.  Look for it soon!

And I know I've been remiss in getting stuff posted, but I just don't have that many books left that we still need.  But here's one:

Joe Palooka 49, c2c.  Enjoy.

And here's another:  Aggie Mack #1

This one has a 6 pages "Johnny Prep" story by Feldstein.

The book handled the conversion from newspaper strips to comic format poorly, the Feldstein story at the end looks better than the rest of the book.  Still not spectacular, but don't let the rest of the issue discourage you if what you're interested in is the Feldstein work.

And, from Geo's scanner and my editing, Terrors of the Jungle #4 scanned from the original book, rather than the IW reprint.

All credit to Geo if you like it for getting us the book, all complaints about the editing to me, please.

A Christmas upload:  A new scan of Puzzle Fun #2, featuring 50 pages of George Carlson art.  My copy was remaindered, but had never been used, so none of the puzzles had been written on.  It seemed worth posting a new version even though we already had a copy.

Just wanted to give people a heads up:  I just posted a scan of Single Series #12 with Joe Jinks from 1939 over at comic book plus.  We don't mess with the United Features books over here because they can be a copyright minefield, but this one seems safe.

I also wanted to thank my friend Fred for giving me the book on the condition that I scan and share it.
