Hi Gang,
I.W. reprints are being talked about and a listing was asked for.
This is from respected collector Jon Ingersol. I'm just reposting it.
This list is getting old now. Please feel free to correct or add info if you have any.

*Issue cited as interiors source reprints material from earlier issues
**Missing the first page of the original story as it was printed on the inside front cover of the source
***May actually reproduce a later reprinting of the material in the cited source
-
And these are the issues that have no real data or cover scans at GCD and so may not exist. If anyone has any of these and can provide us with a cover scan, we would appreciate it:
Billy and Buggy Bear 10 EXISTS
Brain, The 1 EXISTS
Casper Cat 1 EXISTS
Cowboys ‘n’ Injuns 10 EXISTS
Fantastic Adventures 9
Gunfighters 10
Intimate Confessions 10, 18 BOTH EXIST
Jungle Comics 1
Love and Marriage 14
Marmaduke Mouse 14
Planet Comics 9
Red Mask 3
Space Mysteries 8
Teen Romances 10
Undersea Commandos 1
I'll see what I can dig up for cover scans. I may only own the Intimate Confessions issues at the moment.
-
That would be great! After that posting I stumbled across ebay auctions of Billy and Buggy Bear 10 and Intimate Confessions 10, but neither had usable scans.
-
Thanks to a scan from DCM, I have tentatively identified Cowboys 'n' Injuns 1, 7, and 10 as being Tick Tock Tales 31! Once the index of TTT 31 goes live on GCD, I'd love confirmation by someone with a copy of any of those three issues.
-
Two more ID'ed:
IW's Tom-Tom #10 is ME's Tick Tock #18 and Tom-Tom #8 is ME's Tick Tock #22.
-
Confirmation that Cowboys 'n' Injuns #7 is a reprint of Tick Tock 31. I will post the ads and indicate which pages are replaced. Some story pages were replaced with ads but something different in this one. The text feature was replaced with black and white gag pages one of Joe Dokes the other Third Class Eddie Male which are old Centaur features. Something to do with the plates for the text features?
-
And this was posted by jrvandore on July 30, 2009
I stand corrected on one of my corrections! The indicia of Jet/Jet Powers 1 & 2 do say Jet Powers, so Jon's original crediting was correct. The scans of those issues here verify that as well. Unfortunately, the scans of 3 & 4 here don't include the inside front covers, so we at the GCD have to do more research before we can change the records for the series. But we will continue to try to get it right.
And this was posted by jrvandore on September 25, 2010
New identification: IW/Super's Battle Stories #17 is Toby's With the Marines on the Battlefronts of the World #2.
-
Didn't realize this thread was on both sites. I'll try to remember to post in both places with any updates.
BTW, as I mentioned to Builderboy, I think we could solve a handful of these with scans of ME's Cowboys 'n' Injuns.
-
More info for the most diehard IW/Super fan...
I previously identified IW/Super's Tell It to the Marines #1 as a reprint of Toby's Tell It to the Marines #15. But Toby's Tell It to the Marines #15 actually reprints earlier Toby material, including stories from Monty Hall #11, Fighting Leathernecks #3, Tell It to the Marines #5, 2, and 11. The sources for two of the fillers remain unidentified, though the Fat Stuff filler could very well be from Toby's Buck Rogers #101 [8], first line: "At last, I've arrived!" Confirmation welcomed! (See the index once approved at http://www.comics.org/issue/14009/)

-
That leaves these unidentified:
Kat Carson 1 (Cowboys n Injuns?)
The proper title is Kat Karson
-
GAC/DCM have been instrumental in the ID of many of these. Perhaps the mystery issues can finally be identified in the next couple years
-
That leaves these unidentified:
Kat Carson 1 (Cowboys n Injuns?)
The proper title is Kat Karson
Quite right. My sloppy transcription error.
-
The upload of ME's Cowboys 'n' Injuns #3 nails down the source of IW's Kat Karson #1. Thanks, Jon.
-
2 more ID's: US Fighting Men 18 is Superior's US Fighting Air Force 6 and Little Eva #16 is St. John's Little Eva #24.
We have also at the GCD moved Daring Adventures 8, Fantastic Adventures 9, Gunfighters 10, Jungle Comics 1, Marmaduke Mouse 14, Planet Comics 9, Red Mask 3, Space Mysteries 8, Underseas Commandos 1, and Yanks in Battle 3 to the "do not exist" pile.
On the other hand, we have definitely confirmed the existence of Intimate Confessions 10, Teen Romances 10, the alternate version of Speedy Rabbit 1, and Cowboys 'n' Injuns 10 by adding cover scans!
We still need cover scans of Billy and Buggy Bear 10 (confirmed from mycomicshop), The Brain 1 (confirmed from eBay), Intimate Confessions 18 (confirmed from mycomicshop), and Love and Marriage 14 (still unseen, but claimed to exist by a collector).

The above should read US Fighting Men *18* is Superior's US Fighting Air Force 6
-
This may already be common knowledge, but here are some updates to the list posted at the start of this thread:
Billy and Buggy Bear 007 scanned (reprints Timely's All Surprise 008)
Casper Cat 7 (content from Timely's Dopey Duck 1 and 2)
Sharpy Fox 1 (reprints Timely's Ideal Comics 003)
Space Mysteries 1 scanned
Super Rabbit 7 (reprints Timely's Super Rabbit 013)
U.S. Fighting Men 015 scanned
Wacky Duck 1 (reprints Timely's Wacky Duck 006)
Wacky Duck 2 (reprints Timely's Wacky Duck 005)
Wacky Duck 7 (reprints Timely's Wacky Duck 006)
Wacky Duck 10 (reprints Timely's Wacky Duck 005)
Ziggy Pig 7 scanned
I assume the books with Timely content are not allowed here?

Hi Pmack,
Thanks for the update - I'll add them into the master list at the front of this topic.
We can't host any of the Timely IW reprints be we certainly welcome any new information on the master list!

We differ on 2 IDS:
The GCD has Casper Cat 7 as only Dopey Duck 2 (not 1)
The GCD has Sharpy Fox 1 as All Surprise 9
Among those you didn't identify:
Space Mysteries 1 is Journey Into Unknown Worlds 4
U.S. Fighting Man 15 is Man Comics 11
and the GCD has Ziggy Pig 7 as an unidentified issue of Krazy Komics (would love to know which)
I have a list of what the GCD still has not identified and some speculation as to their sources, but I havent posted it here because I wasn't sure there was interest. Several of the unidentified IW/Super romances appear to me to be from Popular Teen-Agers, for example.

Hi Jr,
PLEASE update us when you learn anything new. I'd love to keep the master list at the front of this topic as up to date as possible.
I'll tweak your suggestions and if someone disagrees I hope they'll post here and let the two of you hash it out.

We differ on 2 IDS:
The GCD has Casper Cat 7 as only Dopey Duck 2 (not 1)
The GCD has Sharpy Fox 1 as All Surprise 9
I stand corrected on Casper Cat, but GCD is wrong on Sharpy.
Here is the content of Ideal Comics 003: http://www.atlastales.com/sI/1149
Sharpy Fox 1 is only missing the activity pages from that book.
All Surprise 9 stories have job numbers and the page counts and stories don't match up with what's printed in Sharpy 1.
GCD has Ziggy Pig 7 as an unidentified issue of Krazy Komics (would love to know which)
I've got it narrowed down to 22 books ;) with a strong suspicion that it's somewhere between 20 and 26.
-
Thanks P, your evidence looks pretty strong for Sharpy.
-

Jim has gotten back to me and the IW Danger #9 he has is actually a Danger is Our Business #9. It's likely that a similar mistake was the cause of a report on Danger #9 and it does not exist as we've guessed.
-
Thanks Jon, I've removed it from the front Master list.
-
2 new identifications from Michelle Nolan:
IW/Super's Love and Marriage #10 is Superior's Love and Marriage #4
IW/Super's Love and Marriage #12 is Superior's My Secret Marriage #4
-
Updated the master list.
Thanks Jr!
-
Michelle Nolan was able to confirm one of my guesses and refute one of my guesses.
IW/Super's Intimate Confessions #12 is Quality's Love Confessions #2
but IW/Super's Intimate Confessions #10 is NOT Love Adventures #7 as I guessed.
Jim
-
Thanks Jim, I've updated the master front list.
-
Someone at the GCD identified Great Western #9 as Straight Arrow #48.
-
Just picked off another: Love and Marriage #17 is Quality Comics' Heart Throbs #3.
-
Tnx, now updated!
-
1 more: Intimate Confessions #18 appears to reprint ME's Dream Book of Romance #8.
Jim
-
And yet 1 more: U.S. Fighting Men 17 is Superior's U.S. Fighting Air Force 19.
-
Thanks, updated again.
-
OK. In case nobody's mentioned it before, and they may have, BILLY AND BUGGY BEAR #10 is from the same source as MARTY MOUSE #1, an unidentified ish of Ace's MONKEYSHINES COMICS. Hope this helps.

Michelle Nolan supplied me with these ID's:
Teen Romances #10 is Star's Popular Teen-Agers #7
Teen-Age Talk #8 is Key's Hector #3
Little Eva #4 is St. John's Little Eva #15
Little Eva #9 is St. John's Little Eva #2
That means with Lou's ID's we have all the romance IW/Supers except for the four I am fairly sure are Popular Teen-Agers. Other than two war comics (that are likely US Fighting Air Forces), all the rest of the unidentified are kiddie comics.

Thanks Jim!

I'll do some more updating later tonight. Glad it's sparking some interest!

Yes, nice to see some blanks removed but could you and Jim please double check the master list at the top of the first page.

We've got the odd contradiction here and there about existing and not (ie Kiddie Kapers 7).
Thanks!
I checked the list and what I find is the following:
Battle Stories 18 is probably an issue of U.S. FIGHTING Air Force
we have Casper Cat as just Dopey Duck #2
Famous Funnies 18 is probably Avon's Space Comics #5
(My guess on Full of Fun #8 is an issue of Jamboree...but that's a wild guess)
Kiddie Kapers #17 is probably Cowboys 'n' Injuns 7 or 8
Little Spunky 1 appears to be a combination of reprints from at least Novelty's Frisky Fables 23 and some other issue...which might mean it is actually an exact reprint of a late issue of Star's Frisky Fables
Realistic Romances #8 is Avon's Realistic Romances #7
Sharpy Fox 14 is that Ribtickler 7
Speedy Rabbit 1 and 14 is probably Peter Cottontail 1 (put a question mark on those)
There is no Strange Mysteries #1
We have Super Brat #2 as Toby's Super-Brat #2
Super Brat #8 is also Toby's Super-Brat #2
Super Brat #10 is also Toby's Super-Brat #2
Super Rabbit #10 is Key's Peter Cottontail #2
Tell It to the Marines 1 exists and is a reprint of Toby's Tell It to the Marines #15 (which reprinted earlier material)
Wacky Woodpecker 1 and 2 are also likely Two-Bit 1 or 2 (as are 7 and 10)
Ziggy Pig 1 and 7 are the same and from an unidentified issue of Krazy Komics; 2 and 8 are from Silly Tunes 1; there is no #9
We don't have Candy #1
(We are missing the #1 on the first Frontier Romances on the master list here)
We don't have Strange Mysteries #1
And I think those are the only points of disagreements between the data here and at the GCD.

Tony, on Battle Stories #18, the GCD has an index...we just don't have the source identified. If it will help I have my list of unsourced IW/Supers. I'm pretty sure my formatting wont post, but below I list the currently unsourced issues (the ones GCD does not have anything like an index are starred), then I list what I know of them (either the first story title, the first line of the story title, or the features), then I list my best guess as to the source. (I have the Ribtickler reprints in the list because I believe that issue is actually a reprint of earlier comics and I want to try and locate the ultimate sources.) In addition to those listed below, the GCD has incomplete information on many of the sourced IW/Supers such as story page counts, indicia publisher, etc. We are always looking to supplement that info either through the online indexer, the error report system, or an email to me.

We've got Muggy-Doo "The Persistent Pest" definitely identified as #4 from a download.
Thanks, Lou. I must have missed that issue go through the approval queue at GCD.
-
One last double-check of the DCM against GCD, I find that Speedy Rabbit 1 & 14 are both Key's Peter Cottontail #1 (according to the GCD).
-
Updated again.
-
I got my Mile High box today
IW Two-Bit the Wacky Woodpecker 2 and 7 are Toby #1
Eva the Imp Red Top Decker 1 is St John #23 which is probably #6 with the same cover needs confirmation
-
Just to be clear you are saying 'Little Eva #1' is St John #23 right Narf?
-
Tom-Tom #2 is not Koko and Kola #6. It is Tick Tock Tales #25. The confusion stems from the fact that one story from Tick Tock #25 was reprinted in K&K 6.
-
Yes Eva the IMp reprints 23 but 23 is itself a reprint of an earlier yet unidentified issue reprint not number 6 though.
So we do not have a first appearance of the stories.
-
On a related note, I read somewhere recently (but can't remember exactly where) an explanation of the numbering used on the IW books. They number the batches of printings that were done. So all #1's came out at roughly the same time, then all #2's, and so on.
Can anybody verify/ deny/ comment on that one? It makes as much sense as anything else about these things!
-
I read the exact same thing Eric I believe it was a quote from an old 80s Marketplace or something.
Terrible memory here. *sigh*
-
I have heard that canard before and do not believe it. There are 64 #1s, 24 #2s, 4 #3s, 2 #4s, 3 #5s, 1 #6s, 11 #7s, and so on. I cannot believe they published 64 at one time and the 2 at another. It seems a really unlikely procedure.
-
Unless they had big expectations and sales showed different.
It'd be nice to see the actual article about this.
-
I'm coming to the IW party sort of late, but don't we know the publication dates of the individual issues? Lining them up month by month might quickly show how things happened.
They only sold through retail outlets, right? That would preclude the Charlton-like renumberings/renamings for the cheaper mailing rate.
-
I see no evidence of a renumbering like Charltons. They had far too many first issues for that to have been practical. So the next batch idea might be true
-
If they were renumbering series, there should be a steadily diminishing trend. In other words, there should be lots of #1s, some #8s, and few #17s. But that's not true. There are lots of #1s and lots of #11s, but few #5s and #6s.
-
Not necessarily. As I said, I don't think it's the case, because I don't think they were mailing the comics (and therefore wouldn't care about the numbering continuity), but given Waldman's well-known "what do I need copyrights for?" stance, IF they were mailing books, I wouldn't be surprised if they made up the numbers and only changed to #1s when caught. That might even explain the #11s, hoping to sneak under the radar, if the Post Office were a factor. You might get a burst of #1s with a few rogue teens hidden, hypothetically.
But back to my actual question, is there a spreadsheet of issue numbers with their cover dates? Browsing the GCD was never designed for this sort of investigation (there's no reason to imagine it being a major use, after all), but I can't help noticing, for example, that a lot of #10s appear to have been published in 1963. Were all of them? Were they the same month?
-
There are no cover dates on IW/Supers. The only dates are copyright dates of 1958, 1963, and 1964.
-
That's fair. Do we have any compilation of which numbers showed up in which years?
Note that, if only a copyright year is ever shown--funny for a company that wasn't interested in copyrights, incidentally--these probably weren't considered periodicals by the publisher, and so the issue numbers would be bogus or at best a sales gimmick to begin with.
-
This search sort of does this, and it does look like the #1-9 came out in 1958 and #10-18 came out in 1963 and 1964. The 1963 and 1964 overlap through 10 to 18 though.

Very interesting. It's obviously not real support, but I can definitely see why someone would make the jump that the numbers are related to months. Unlikely as it might sound to have so many titles in one month and so few in others, it's hard to look at numbers split so neatly by year (with a few exceptions that could easily be printing, shipping, or other scheduling problems) and see much else.
If I had to guess (and I realize there's no reason I'd need to do any such thing with more-knowledgeable people than me looking at the problem...), I'd suggest that the #1s were an aberration, like a pessimistic business model ("we're only doing this a few times, so make everything #1), then the other numbers could be months or at least "production runs" after.
Definitely an interesting little question, though.

While the same exact book was printed numerous times with different numbers, it does not look like he had the same number for the same title. Blazing Six Guns had the most issues. 1-18 but there are no issues #2-7, 13, or 14. I think the next step is to compare the logos and known dates. Very interesting topic

A contributor to the GCD recently contacted me with his personal theory on the numbering of the IW/Supers. With his permission, I am copying it here:
In 1958 Israel Waldman finds 99 printing plates of comics in a warehouse that he has purchased. He takes 95 of them, divided into 4 stacks, to a printer. The biggest stack of 65 is supposed to have no series repeats in it, and the stack of 24 is supposed to contain only the 2nd copy of a series (for example, "Great Western" has both an issue #1 and an issue #2). However, Waldman has put 4 plates in the wrong piles. The big stack has 2 different copies of "Speedy Rabbit" (that is why the GCD has a #1 and a #1(b)). The stack of 24 has 3 plates ("Love and Marriage", "Romantic Love", and "Undersea Commandos") that should have been placed in the big stack. The error goes undetected. Regarding the remaining 6 plates, Waldman has placed the 3rd plate of "The Brain", the 3rd plate of "Little Eva", the 3rd plate of "Super Brat", and the 2nd plate of "Romantic Love" in the pile designated for issue #3; in the final pile, he has the only 2 series to have 4 plates, "The Brain" and "Little Eva". Issues #1 through #4 are then printed.
Waldman returns to his shop and eventually finds 3 plates ("Sensational Police Cases", "Strange Worlds", and "Teen-Age Talk") that had been misplaced. He takes them to the printer and says that he has no idea if these 3 titles have already been used, so he tells the printer that "Since we've already published issues #1 through #4, let's make this one #5."
Later he finds another misplaced plate ("Little Eva"), checks his shop thoroughly to make sure there are no others, and takes what is going to be #6 to the printer.
Waldman is then contacted by a friend of his, who tells him that he has 11 plates in his possession, and that he will let Waldman have them for a share of the profits. The friend is even sleazier than Waldman, because 6 of the plates are for Timely/Atlas/Marvel, a company that is still in business. These 11 plates arrive at the printer to become #7.
In either 1959 or 1960, Waldman purchases another warehouse and finds 90 printing prints. Rather than glut the market like he did with the first 4 issues, he decides to do a third at a time. He takes 29 plates to the printer for issue #8, followed by 30 plates for issue #9. The final 31 plates are bundled together and as Waldman is reaching for the doorknob to deliver them to the printer, there's a knock at the door. He opens it up, and there stand 2 men, who introduce themselves as lawyers for Timely/Atlas/Marvel. Waldman is told that if he doesn't cease and desist, he will be sued. He takes the final bundle of 31 and places it in his closet.
3 or 4 years later Waldman purchases another warehouse which has 121 printing plates, his best find yet. Overcoming his fear of being sued, he decides to go back into the comic publishing business. The first thing he does is take the bundle of 31 out of the closet and to the printer. He tells the printer he wants some changes made: (1) the triangle housing the I.W. will no longer appear on the cover, being replaced by Super Comics Seal of Quality; (2) the "is published by I.W. Enterprises, Inc." in the indicia will be replaced by "is published by Super Comics, Inc."; (3) the sentence "Contents copyrighted and must not be reproduced without permission" will appear in the indicia; and (4) a year will appear in the indicia. Waldman believes these changes will put enough distance between I.W. and the new comics to keep anybody from connecting the 2 and thus eliminate the possibility of a lawsuit. As careful as he is, there are still 2 things that can still connect these new printings to I.W.: (1) the address "62 West 47th St., New York 36, N.Y." appears in both indicias; and (2) rather than going back to issue #1, the new comics continue with the numbering in place. Thus, issue #10 is printed.
The 121 printing plates found in the latest warehouse are divided into 6 stacks (Waldman's theory is to put a low number of 20 into the market every month or so, thus keeping a low profile). He takes 21 plates to the printer for #11
The next 2 stacks (#12 and #14) are printed at the same time, but before I get into what happened here, I have to tell you that I looked at 8 indicias for #12 and 4 indicias for #14. All the indicias for #14 contained a date of 1963; #12 contained 3 dates of 1963 and 5 dates of 1964. If some of the #12s have a 1964 date, how can #14 have a 1963 date? This is the only scenario I can think of as to how this happened.
It's the end of the year, probably close to Christmas, and Waldman decides to do a special batch of comics (funny animals and mischievous youngsters) and digs through the plates that have already been printed. He finds 10, bundles them together, gets his regular batch of 20, and goes to the printer. He tells the printer "The bigger batch is #12 with a 1963 date; do not use #13 because it's unlucky; and #14 is the smaller batch with a 1964 date." The front covers for #12 are printed first; then the printer does the front covers for #14; he is now ready to do the inside-front cover and rather than taking the taller batch, he takes the shorter batch and puts a date of 1963 in the indicia. He then starts on the bigger batch and is part-way through when he realizes that he's made a mistake; the shorter batch should have been dated 1964. Rather than finishing with all 30 comics dated 1963 and telling Waldman he made a mistake, he does the remaining comics with a 1964 date, hoping that Waldman won't notice.
Nothing unusual about the last 4 batches....20 are taken over for #15; another 20 become #16; 20 more become #17; and the final 20 are #18.
Now, you may find fault with my speculations on issues #5, #6, #7, #10, #12, and #14, but you can't discount the fact that the issues were numbered using the printings. Waldman did not have a secret code whereby the number represented a month (in fact, I don't think the word "month" was even in his vocabulary); he didn't have a dartboard that was divided into 17 sections (again, no #13); he wasn't going to spend money by hiring someone to keep track of the numbers; and he sure wasn't going to keep track of them himself. So the easiest numbering system was to simply have the printing number determine the issue number.
RANDOM NOTES
1. Originally I thought the first 9 issues were all printed in 1958; however, #8 and #9 could not have been printed in 1958 because of the ads that appear in some of the issues. If you look at KAANGA #8 and DARING ADVENTURES #9, they contain a Davis & Bennett advertisement for Bruce Tegner's "Karate the Open Hand and Foot Fighting" and mention a Library of Congress Catalog Card number of 59-12896. By checking a couple of websites, I found out that Bruce Tegner's book was first printed in 1959; I also found that this same Davis & Bennett ad appeared in Popular Science Vol. 177, #3 (September 1960). So that means if my speculations on #5 and #6 are correct, the first 6 issues were printed in 1958; #7 was printed in either 1958, 1959, or 1960; and #8 and #9 were printed in either 1959 or 1960
2. Of the 41 indicias that I looked at for issues #1 through #9, only 1 had a 1958 date (the other 40 had no year); of the 47 indicias for issues #10 through #18, 45 had either a 1963 nor 1964 date (2 had no date)
3. The 10 issues of #14 reprinted these earlier I.W. issues
Brain #14 Brain #3
Casper Cat #14 Casper Cat #7
Kiddie Kapers #14 Kiddie Kapers #10
Little Eva #14 Little Eva #10
Marmaduke Monk #14 Marmaduke Monk #1
Muggsy Mouse #14 Muggsy Mouse #1
Pinky the Egghead #14 Pinky the Egghead #2
Speedy Rabbit #14 Speedy Rabbit #1
Tippy Terry #14 Tippy Terry #1
Sharpy Fox #14 Tuffy Turtle #1
4. So what happened to Israel Waldman in the 6 years after he printed #18 and his re-emergence in 1970 with Skywald Publications? I've got it narrowed to down to 3 possibilities:
a. He continued to purchase warehouses, but found there was more money in setting them on fire and collecting on the insurance, or
b. Immediately after #18 was printed, he vacationed in England, found a warehouse there containing bootleg copies of a recording group called The Beatles, brought the bootlegs back to the U.S., had the records distributed, and was responsible for the British Invasion of 1964, or
c. He spent the entire 6 years trying to figure out the numbering system of his comics.

Found a cover that isn't noted on the list. Realistic Romances #9 (IW) is a redone cover from the Star Publications series Intimate Secrets Of Romance (#1).
-
Thanks Fett, I've added that info to the master list.
-
And I submitted that information (including the cover artist correction) to the GCD. Thanks, Fett!
-
Found another one :), if you are going for an earlier/original source. Blazing Sixguns #1 (IW) -the cover is listed as being from Wild Bill Hickok #26 (Avon). An earlier published version of the cover is the Avon one-shot Blazing Sixguns #1. (though the vignettes are switched around).
-
Sunny, America's Sweetheart #8 (IW)-cover from Penny #3 (Avon)
-
Realistic Romances #8 (IW) , cover reprinted (partially-art) from Realistic Romances #16 (Avon) 1953 series
-
Romantic Love #8 (IW) -cover from Realistic Romances #17 (Avon) (1953 series)
-
I'm guessing it's Realistic Romances #17 then Fett?
-
I added the one out of those we didn't have on the GCD. Thanks, Fett.
-
Since most of the Superhero books have been added to DCM we are starting to get more romance and funny animal. As these are added the unk IW may no longer be mysteries. I look forward to when they are all identified.
-
I'm guessing it's Realistic Romances #17 then Fett?
Two different entries if I understand your question Yoc
Realistic Romances #8 (IW)-cover is from Realistic Romances #16 (Avon)(1953)
Romantic Love #8 (IW)-cover is from Realistic Romances #17 (Avon)(1953)
-
Thanks Fett, got it now.

Looking through some of my unsorted paper and found a copy of Muggsy Mouse #3 (Magazine Enterprises). Looks like Muggsy Mouse #1 IW reprints this issue.:) I'll have a scan up soon.
-
Very cool, Fett. That's two more off the list. Thanks!
-
Wacky Woodpecker #1 and 10 are the same and are NOT Toby WW #1 or 2 (thanks to the new scan of #2), so likely #3. This should have a question mark until confirmed, in case it is an unpublished issue or something.
-
Done. Thanks J.
-
US Fighting Air Force #1 is from Superior's US Fighting Air Force #11.
One more war comic left.

Updated
-
Dan Stevenson confirmed that IW/Super's Wacky Woodpecker #s 1 & 10 are Toby's Two-Bit the Wacky Woodpecker #3, so that is two more down.
-
And updated, thanks!
-
Thanks to Narf, Fett, and Dan Stevenson more updates:
Casper Cat 1 is another Dopey Duck 2 (Im not sure why the master list has #7 as 1+2; GCD has that as just #2)
Kiddie Kapers 17 is NOT Cowboys n Injuns 8, so likely 7 (but needs confirmation)
Muggsy Mouse 2 is ME's Muggsy Mouse 4; Muggsy Mouse 14 is another ME Muggsy Mouse 3.
Police Trap 16 is Mainline's Police Trap 1
Also
Famous Funnies 18 might be Funny Tunes 1 or 3 or Space Comics 5. Same with Space Comics 8
Marmaduke Monk 1 and 14 are the same
Red Mask 1 and 8 are the same
Sharpy Fox 1 should say "Previously thought to be All Surprise 9 (Timely) in error" so there is no confusion.
And I'm almost certain Tom-Tom 1 is Tick Tock Tales 22, but I'd need an index of Tom-Tom 1 to be sure. (Tom-Tom 1 is now the only unindexed IW/Super!!!!)
-
Another identification, this times thanks to Heritage Auctions. IW/Super's Little Eva #10 & 14 are St. John's Little Eva #3.

Ger Apeldoorn indexed Avon's US Tank Commandos #1 for the GCD, which negated one of our IDs. IW/Super's US Tank Commandos #1 is in search of a new source. I'm pretty sure it is Avon's US Tank Commandos #4, but it would be nice to get confirmation.

I don't know what's in the I.W. issue, Jim,
but I own all four of the Avon issues. Ask me a question.

I'm hoping Avon's US Tank Commandos #4 has these stories:
Hell in Combat (7 pp.)
Break Through (6 pp.)
Boogie-Woogie Bugler of Death (2 pp., text)
Meeting Under Fire (6 pp.)
Road Back to Seoul (6 pp.)
Does it?

Yes, indeed, Jim.

I've updated with the latest info.
Thanks Jim and Jim. :)

And thanks to Jim and Yoc.

A very minor change to the list of unidentified: Famous Funnies 18 and Space Comics 8 cannot have Funny Tunes as their source, since all of those are now indexed at the GCD and don't match. My current guess is they come from Avon's Space Comics or perhaps Avon's Space Mouse.

I was always interested in the indexing of comic books, as was my buddy Mike Tiefenbacher when we first met in the early '70s. Among our projects i was intrigued by the IW-SUPER comics line, which had to be one of the great mysteries of comic history. I spent a lot of time going over these books and trying to uncover what I could.
Mike once said he had seen them distributed in plastic bags and sold in secondary outlets -- book shops, resale shops, etc. In going over the entries of this fascinating discussion, I saw a mention of the posta requirements being suggested as why there were so many 1#'s. That could not be. These book were never sold as subscriptions, and never went through the mail. To do so, they would have had to publish an annual statement of ownership and circulation, and there never were any.
In trying to break down when the books came out, the earliest ones were dated 1958, and later ones were dated 1963 and 1964. But to understand the order that was used in publishing the comics, you have to ignore the numbers and look at the indicias on the inside front cover. Here is an analysis I did back in August of 1980 that appeared in APA-I...
IW-Super Comics Indicias
One of the great mysteries of the IW/SUPER COMICS line has always been its numbering. How could you figure out what is going on when BLAZING SIX-GUNS has #1,8-12 and 15-18? And ROBIN HOOD goes #1,2,9-11,15,17? And STRANGE WORLDS only has a #5! In an effort to understand, I have broken down part of the comics by the indicia on the inside front cover of each. In doing this, the numbering, especially the SUPER issues, makes a little sense.
ONE TYPE A: "... is published by I.W. Enterprises, Inc., 521 Fifth Ave., New York 17, N.Y. ... Reprinted in U.S.A. Copyright 1958 by I.W. Enterprises, Inc." This appeared in #1 (KID KOKO), #2's (LITTLE EVA, KRAZY KROW), and some books in both #1 and #2 (SUPER BRAT, SUPER RABBIT, WACKY DUCK).
TWO TYPE B: "... is published by I.W. Enterprises, Inc., 521 Fifth Ave., New York 17, N.Y. ... Reprinted in U.S.A." The copyright date was taken off, otherwise this is the same as indicia type A. This was in more #1's (APACHE, COWBOYS N' INJUNS, INDIAN BRAVES, MAN O'MARS), more books with both #1 and #2 (THE BRAIN, GREAT WESTERN, RED MASK, ROBIN HOOD) a #2 (SHARPY FOX) and a #3 (LITTLE EVA)
THREE TYPE C: "... is published by I.W. Enterprises, Inc., 20 E. 46th St., New York 17, N.Y. ... Reprinted in U.S.A." The address is different in this batch. This is in a further #1's (BUCCANEER, FANTASTIC TALES, HUMAN FLY, SPACE MYSTERIES, TOP JUNGLE, WILD WESTERN ROUNDUP), a couple more with a #1 and a #2 (MUGGSY MOUSE, SILVER KID WESTERN) another #2 (UNDERSEA COMMANDOS), a #3 (THE BRAIN), and both of the books that only published a #5 (SENSATIONAL POLICE CASES, STRANGE WOLDS).
FOUR TYPE D: "... is published by I.W. Enterprises, Inc., 62 West 47th Street, Room 206, New York 36, N.Y. ... Reprinted in U.S.A." Another new address. This indicia had the last of the #1's, all of the #7's and some of the #8's. #1's with this were (DYNAMIC COMICS, FIGHTING DANIEL BOONE, GREAT ACTION, KAANGA, SPACE DETECTIVE, STRANGE PLANETS, U.S. PARATROOPS, U.S. TANK COMMANDOS, WILD BILL HICKOK), one book with a #1 and a #2 (EERIE), a single #2 (TOP ADVENTURE), one with a #1 and a #7 (LITTLE EVA), more #7's (COWBOYS N'INJUNS, WACKY WOODPECKER), and plenty of the #8's (BLAZING SIX-GUNS, BUCCANEERS, DREAM OF LOVE, FIREHAIR, LOVE AND MARRAIGE, TEEN AGE TALK, TOM TOM THE JUNGLE BOY, WAMBI, ZIGGY PIG).
FIVE TYPE E: "... is published by I.W. Enterprises, Inc., 62 West 47th Street, Room 206, New York 36, N.Y. ... Reprinted in U.S.A. by the Eastern Color Printing Co., Waterbury 20, Conn." The same address, but the added the name of the printer. This was in the rest of the #8's and all of the #9's. These were the #8's (PURPLE CLAW, RED MASK, SPACE COMICS, U.S. TANK COMMANDOS). One book with a #8 and a #9 was (DYNAMIC ADVENTURES). The #9's were (DARING ADVENTURES, JUNGLE COMICS, ROBIN HOOD, SPACE MYSTERIES, TEEN AGE TALK, REALISTIC ROMANCES, TELL IT TO THE MARINES, TOP DETECTIVE, U.S. FIAGHTING AIR FORCE, GREAT WESTERN).
SIX TYPE F: "... is published by Super Comics, Inc. 62 West 47th Street, New York 36, N.Y. ... Reprinted in U.S.A. 1963." Same address, by the new name is Super Comics. These were the first ones with a date since the 1958 batch. All of the #10's, #11's and #14's were here as well as some of the #12's All of these had the Super Comics round insignia, except for it being left off of three #10's (PEE WEE PIXIES, THREE RASCALS, WACKY DUCK). To avoid a bit of typing, this indicia was in all the #10's, #11's and #14's that I've checked, and these #12's (BLAZING SIX-GUNS, DARING ADVENTURES, FANTASTIC ADVENTURES, FOXHOLE, GUNFIGHTERS).
SEVEN TYPE G: "... is published by Super Comics, Inc. 62 West 47th Street, New York 36, N.Y. ... Reprinted in U.S.A. 1964." Same as the previous indicia, except the date is the following year. This appeared in the rest of the #12's (DANGER, THE SPIRIT, JUNGLE ADVENTURES, STRANGE PLANETS, U.S. FIGHTING MEN, WILD BILL HICKOK) as well as all of the #15's and #16's I've checked. This was also in some of the #17's (POLICE TRAP, STRANGE MYSTERIES).
EIGHT TYPE H: "... is published by Super Comics, Inc. 62 West 47th Street, New York 36, N.Y. ... Reprinted in U.S.A. 1964. National Distributor: Harry Williams, 4304 Dexter Street, Philadelphia, Pa." Same as the previous indicia, except the name of the distributor was added. This version was in most of the rest of the #17's that I checked, except for those two mentioned above.
NINE TYPE I: "... is published by Super Comics, Inc. 62 West 47th Street, New York 36, N.Y. ... Reprinted in U.S.A. National Distributor: Harry Williams, 4304 Dexter Street, Philadelphia, Pa." Same as the previous indicia, except the date was taken out. This last version was in all of the #18's that I checked.
All of this data is as of what I knew back in 1980, but I think if someone broke down all the books according to these indicia types, it would give us a listing of the books as they were released. Any comments on this suggestion?
I have a number of books that are IW/SUPER COMICS and the books they were reprinted from. I will try to scan them if I can find'em.

Thanks very much for you added information Jerry and welcome to the site.
We've bumped you to VIP status for your upload contributions.
Thanks! I've been noted as a VIP many times, but I later found out it was an abbreviation for "Very Irritating Person"...
For IW/Super fans, I am going to upload a copy of Ziff-Davis' KID COWBOY #10. Part of that book (two of the three Kid Cowboy stories and the Singing Cowboy tale) were rerpinted by Red Top in their WILD WESTERN ROUNDUP #1, Oct. 1957. IW then reprinted that book in what I refer to as a a Type C indicia IW comic. So it's a case of knowing the source of the book that was the source of the IW reprint!

Hehe, thanks Jerry, any original c2c scans or an IW reprint (other than the Marvel non-PD books) are very welcome on the site.
If you ever have a question or problem just let me know. You can send me a Private Message using the little word balloon icon under my muppet avatar.

Hi, Jerry. On a completely selfish note, I would love to see a scan of Tom-Tom #1 as that is the only IW/Super we don't have rudimentary information for at the GCD.

IW/Super's Little Eva #7 appears to be St. John's Little Eva #16. You might want to put that in with a question mark unless someone can confirm the contents of St. John's Little Eva #16.

Thanks for the earlier info Jerry and for the remaining books Jim. I am one of those IW fans. I have contributed scans of some but we do not yet have the originals to match them too.
-
Fett noticed that mycomicshop.com has a second Little Eva #10 listed. It has the same cover as their #2 and the same contents as their #6 (which is one of the remaining unsourced). So Little Eva #10 should be added to the master list AND to the list of yet unidentified.
Thanks, Fett!
-
I think I updated the master list. Let me know if it's wrong.
-
Thanks. I was trying to call the issue number "10 bracket-b-end bracket" and that bolded the end of the post. I hope you dont think I was yelling!
The cover is the same as #2, contents same as #6.
-
We have IW/Super's Little Eva #1 as St. John's Little Eva #28. It is actually St. John's Little Eva #12 (which is reprinted in #28), so maybe change that one to 12/28.

-
Done, thanks Jim.
-
Thanks Jim. I think I marked that knowing it was an earlier reprint but did not have any more info available at the time.
-
Thanks to the new scan we now know that IW/Super Famous Funnies 15 is Ajax-Farrell's Super-Cat 4 (which is mostly reprints of Novelty material).
-
Noted, thanks Jr
-
Kiddie Kapers #17 is from Cowboys 'n' Injuns #5.
-
Kiddie Kapers #17 is from Cowboys 'n' Injuns #5.
No it isn't. Just the first story is from CnI #5. The others are from 1, 6, and 2.
My guess is it CnI 7.
-
I'll leave it as-is until it's confirmed.
-
On my "what we have left list" on the previous page, I have changed the probable source of Famous Funnies 18 to Super Pup 5 (since we got a scan of Space Comics and it weren't dat). If anyone has Super Pup 5 on their pile to scan, know that someone (me!) is interested in seeing it some day.
-
Gunfighters 12 The Rider (Ajax) #5
This attribution was wrong and should be to Ajax-Farrell's Gunsmoke Trail #2.

Thanks for keeping on top of this Jim.
-
Today's Fox upload confirms that IW/Super's Sunny, America's Sweetheart 8 is Fox's Sunny #11 (with the cover from Avon's Penny #3).
--Jim
-
Happy (early) New Year, IW/Super fans!
IW/Super's Little Eva #18 is actually reprinted from #9 and 25 so this one should be noted as 9/25.
I hope to have another Little Eva or two soon.
(Also the previous Sunny info did not get recorded in the avalanche of activity of Fox-fall.)
-
Even quicker than I anticipated...
IW/Super's Little Eva #7 is confirmed to be from St. John's Little Eva #16, so the question mark can be removed.

-
Fixed.
Thanks for keeping track of these for us Jim.
Have a great 2014!
-
IW/Super's Little Eva 6 and Little Eva 10 (ver2) reprint material also reprinted in St. John's Little Eva #30. #30 is reprinted from one of 5 earlier issues of Little Eva, however. So for now we can say they are from #30...but I'll keep my eye out for their ultimate source.

I have tried to hunt down some Little Eva reprints but we still need some originals to see where they come from. Will put us very close to having IW knowledge complete.
-
I finally got confirmation that IW/Super's Kiddie Kapers #17 reprints the contents of ME's Cowboys 'n' Injuns #7 (which reprinted previously published material).
--Jim
-
not many to go
-
found another one today. Battle Stories #18 is a reprint of U.S. Fighting Air Force #28 (Superior) ,minus a 2 page text story on the centerfold.
-
Noted, thanks Fett.
-
Fett also confirmed that IW/Super's Tom-Tom #1 is reprinted from Tick Tock Tales #22.
-
Noted as well.
-
Marty Mouse #1-all pages from Monkeyshines Comic #22 [ACE]. Don't have a copy in hand of Billy and Buggy Bear #10 to compare though.
-
Noted. Thanks Fett
-
You can go ahead and make Billy and Buggy Bear #10 as from Monkeyshines #22. The GCD has it indexed and it has the same contents as Marty Mouse #1.
--Jim
-
Thanks Jim!
-
Little Eva #12 IW is Little Eva #5 St. John
-
I've been taking the information provided in these text lists and incorporating them in a spreedsheet and database, which I will be happy to provide to anyone here if there is interest. The project has been interrupted by a move from one house to another, but once most of the 2000+ books (not to mention magazines, comics, etc., movies, recorded music...) are unpacked, I'll continue adding the material from more recent comments/listings. I can also publish the list to a common site where people could add revisions.
Loren MacGregor/Churnworks
-
HI Loren,
you might publish the spreadsheet on https://docs.google.com.
Good luck with the move.
-
One more identification positively made! IW-Super's Famous Funnies #18 contains Avon's Super Pup #5.
--Jim
-
Thanks Jim.
Noted.
-
And two more: The contents of Buster Bear #9 and Buster Bear #10 are from Frisky Fables v3#6, though they may actually match exactly a later reprint of that material.
This leaves by my accounting just two Ziggy Pigs to identify! (As well as some other loose ends which may or may not ever get tied up.)

good work Jim
-
nice work , thank you
-
Updated. Thanks Jim.

Pee Wee Pixies 8 Pixies (ME) #4
Pee Wee Pixies 10 Pixies (ME) #4
Technically both of these reprint Mighty Atom (ME) #1 from 1957 because like that 1957 reprint of Pixies #4 it deletes the fourth panel on page 4 of 3rd story which is the torture scene of Polly being put on a waffle iron.
I suspect that Mighty Atom and the Pixies #IW-1 reprints Mighty Atom #3 (from 1957) which reprints Mighty Atom & the Pixies #6 from the forties rather than reprinting the older one directly but I don't know.
And this leads me to believe that Mighty Atom (ME) #3 from 1957 is a reprint of Pixies #3 from the forties and is the direct source IW's Pee-Wee Pixies #1
-
The last have been identified thanks to JVJ. Ziggy Pig 1 and 7 are from Timely's Krazy Komics #17. I think this is done, but I'll look it over later.
-
Thanks for the update Jim. Please do keep us posted on that you find out.

way to go Jim
-
If the last have been identified, does that mean we now believe
Gunfighters #10
Jungle Comics #1
Red Mask #3
Space Mysteries #8
Undersea Commandos #1
Yanks in Battle #3
I see they're no longer on the list in post 1
We haven't yet completely identified Little Spunky #1 which has some material from Frisky Fables (Novelty) #23 so it's probably from a different issue which reprinted stuff from #23 (or was reprinted in #23)
Nor do we know the issue of Jamboree that Full of Fun #8 reprints.
I think it quite likely that Buster Bear #9 10 actually reprint reprints of Frisky Fables v3 n6 as that comic was 52 pages long and not all of it is reprinted. As I believe IW used the plates sheets for multiple pages, it would be quite a coincidence if this worked out just right to make a 48 page comic into a 32 page comic.
-
I haven't yet looked the list over (no internet the last week), but I am confident that anything not on the list now does not exist.
Full of Fun being a Jamboree was a guess of mine that is almost certainly wrong. That listing should revert to "unpublished Baily studio material."
-
Updated Full of Fun
-
Ziggy Pig #1 and 7 are from Krazy Komics #17.
-
How'd you know, DM? ;) (read upthread)

The GCD.

I'm not sure what this is going to look like, format-wise, so I'm attaching a pdf. Feel free to make the pdf available through the IW-Super listing link.

Thanks Jim!
I've updated the first posts with your list.

looks like the cover for Red Mask #8 (IW) is based on the cover of Wild Bill Hickok #17 (Avon). didn't see this noted on GCD or here.

thumbing through some of the avon scans looking at Kinstler art and noticed the cover for Dream of Love #9 (IW) is taken from the ifc of Realistic Romance #3 (Avon). Partially rearranged but easily identified. :)

Noted and now added to the list. Thanks Fett.

Has anyone seen a picture of Israel Waldman online?

Ha, great question!
I have a lot of pictures of people but he's not one of them.
Anyone have one to share in the Vintage Photo Section maybe?

I had made a Skywald checklist years ago and decided to start populating the checklists with links to the cover images this past week. I like to have a company logo in the top corner of my checklist pages. Skywald used a lamp post for their logo with banners hanging off the side. One banner usually featured a character from the comics. Since this logo was representing all of their comics, I came up with the idea of putting Sol Brodsky and Isreal Waldman's picture hanging off the lamp post. I don't want to hijack this thread, but I became very curious what he looked like after hearing so much about his unethical business decisions.

Which of the IW/Super issues still need cover scans (from the list of possible non-existent issues on page 1)?

I've updated the IW listings of which books have and have not been scanned.
The GCD lists all the books published by IW-SUper at this link -

I don't know if any covers are still needed. You can check and see for yourself at the link above.
