Title: eBay finds
Post by: Roygbiv666 on September 03, 2010, 07:48:08 PM
One of the missing comics:
http://cgi.ebay.com/WONDER-COMICS-7-SCHOMBURG-Damsel-Distress-CVR-1946-/150486797233?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2309b64bb1

Wonder Comics #7
Title: Wonder Comics, likely #16

Another missing issue: Wonder Comics Golden Age Comic Book Coverless

http://cgi.ebay.com/Wonder-Comics-Golden-Age-Comic-Book-Coverless-/200522062432?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb00bda60

Only ships to the USA.

It would appear to be Wonder Comics #16, as only issues 15-17 feature all of these characters:
"Superheros Wonderman and Carol the Wondergirl.  Tara Space Adventuress, The Grim Reaper Costumed Superhero, and Jill Trent Science Sleuth."

I have scans of 15 and 17 and neither feature the Wonderman splash depicted.

The interior pages are off-white with some browning on some pages including the interior covers. You never know, although this item has a reserve price it doesn't hurt to bid what you consider a reasonable (maximum) amount. If you win, you win. If you lose, you're out nothing.

Ha! What if his reserve is $19.99? Then you'd look silly.

I just bought JLA #21 (first meeting with the JSA) for $40. Too much? Nah. I figured out how long I need to work to net that, then consider if it's worth it.

I needs to find Fighting Yank #7 and Wonder Comics #2.

Well there I just bid and was out bid but the reserve not met. I always include shipping in the price I will pay. I have a nearly complete run of Justice League. Love the annual crossovers. I have coverless copy of Flash of two Worlds. I have never been able to afford even a coverless copy of Showcase 4 or Adv 247

Yeah, good luck with those.  ::)

Wow, nearly complete run. I was on a Doom Patrol jag for a while and got the complete original run (My Greatest Adventure, Doom Patrol Vol 1), along with some dupicates I never got around to listing on ebay. Mostly bought in lots.

It's (almost) amusing how every book from this dealer has "gorgeous eye appeal" and is "a nice piece of American and Comic history and a treasure to add to one's collection." Sure are a lot of "treasures" out there with "eye appeal" - whatever that means.

Hey, it's just a comic book.

Doom Patrol is one of my all time favorites. I had a complete run except the final issue. I have been through a few collections with moves and such. Doom Patrol was one of my first re-completions, this time with two copies of the final issue.

Ah, Narf, you and I have similar tastes.  I'm missing 5 issues for the complete Silver Age Doom Patrol run, I think.  I've got both MGA 80 and Doom Patrol 121; both bought years ago.  I think I paid $30 for the beat up MGA 80, and that's probably the only issue I ever paid over $20 for.  One of the great Silver Age DC books.

Adventure #247 remains the most I've ever paid for a comic; even a beat up one.  But it was worth it to me to be able to say I have a complete run of the Legion.  And, amazingly, while there are at least 10 reprints of that story out there, there has NEVER been an unedited one!  The first reprint dropped a page, the next two were digest size, and all later ones (other than in black & white) edited the coloring.

Most I ever paid was $100 years ago for a B&B 28 that I really wish I never would have gotten rid of.

eBay sellers also say "displays well", I guess if you display your books for some reason.

Cheap art project: color photocopy of a comic cover, blown up to 2-11"x17" in a cheap Wal-Mart frame. I did that to the first Doom Patrol issue (86?) and it looks kind of snazzy.

More than a few people display their books.  Here (http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1623360#Post1623360) is a thread on the "Collectors Society" site where people show-off their "comic rooms".

I got Flash of Two World way back in 1977 I think it was. I saw an ad in the local shopper for 300 or so old comics. I immediatey called the guy up and was on his doorstep a few hours later. I was really excited. Looked through his books. Every thing was from the late 50's to the early 60's. He was a DC kinda guy when he was young.
The best things in the bunch were all the early Flash, Green Lantern, 2,3,5. Justice League 2,3,5, Batwoman, Batmite, weird SF Detective comics, that kind of stuff.
Funny thing is that he had no Showcase, or the #1's of GL, JLA.  He just seemed to miss the big first issues by a month.
It was my best find ever. I had just been paid for the janitor job I had a the local clinic, I think my check was for just under $100. I hadn't even had time to cash it yet, I just signed it over to him and went home a very happy young man.

What a find. I had a Showcase 6 that I only paid two dollars for once. I had a B&B 28 in vg condition that I had paid $100 for. I do have a coverless Flash of Two Worlds, Man in the Ant Hill, JLA 1

Funny thing is that he had no Showcase, or the #1's of GL, JLA.  He just seemed to miss the big first issues by a month.

The drugstore where I bought most of my comics as a kid seemed to never carry Brave and the Bold or Showcase or #1s.  I did get JLA #1 on vacation, but missed on their B&B appearances and GL Showcases #1.  This was most frustrating to me -- to see them advertised and not be able to find them or the first three Hawkman tryouts..  By the time Atom was trying out, I knew to ride my bike farther and did get those issues.

At a rummage sale once when I was  a teenager I bought a few comics. Nothing to special.

While at home going through them I opened up the Archie and inside was X-men #2(no cover)

For some reason somebody had put a Archie cover on a coverless X-Men 2.

Wow, what story B!
And I recall that was a great issue too.
I especially loved the first few issues of X-Men.  Not long ago I tried the first issue of FF and wasn't nearly as impressed.
I know, perhaps apples and oranges but Lee/Kirby really knew their stuff by X-Men #1.
:)

Yoc,
I know what you mean. There is something about those first twenty or so X-Men that I just love.
Especially sticks out in my memory is the first encounter with the Sentinels.
Just love that stuff!!!
Does ANYTHING produced today hold a candle to those early stories.
In my mind no.

Title: Re: eBay finds

Ha!  The Sentinels and the Mimic (and his robot twin Super Adaptroid) were also my favourite villains.  The Banshee was cool too but then they made him a good guy...

Title: Re: eBay finds
Post by: OtherEric on April 13, 2011, 07:32:49 AM
Every now and then you hit a book that has the magic of those early books.  It's sadly a LOT rarer, but sometimes something hits.  I've gotten that on a few of the Peter Wheat issues.

And you're all wrong, by the way: while the Kirby issues of X-Men are nice, it's the Steranko and Adams issues that are really amazing.  :P
Title: Re: eBay finds
Post by: Yoc on April 13, 2011, 10:21:40 AM
Each their own Eric.  I read the Adams issues before the first Kirby books and I still found them equal if not superior.  IMO.
Now you want to talk AMAZING Adams - his run on the Avengers - Holy Cats was that good!   :o
Title: Re: eBay finds
Post by: narfstar on April 13, 2011, 02:20:35 PM
Art wise I would agree that the Adam's Sterenko issues are better. BUT for the sheer "feel" the early issues touch the heart.
Title: Re: eBay finds
Post by: OtherEric on April 13, 2011, 03:40:34 PM
I was partly joking around.  The Adams and Steranko issues are the ones I've bothered to replace after I sold most of my SA Marvel to make rent a few years ago, though.

I've recently finished off two projects, in fact:  I have every comic book with Steranko interiors now, other than a couple where he inked one panel or such.  And I have every Marvel issue with Adams doing interior story pencils.  Both of those are surprisingly small piles- only 30 issues for the Marvel Adams and about 40 for Steranko.

I finally figured out a while back that Steranko was not a comic book artist.  He's an artist who happens to have done a few comic books.  The fact that the few he did were so influential tends to obscure things.

I would also worry about this one since it apparently reprints some early DC material.  The book may not have been renewed but the original stories may have been.

And further checking shows we actually already have the book.  It's been there for a while, so I'm not going to move it to suspect.  But I would like our other moderators and experts to sound off just in case.

I got outbid on a copy of this book a few months ago and the price was somthing like $40 at auction. At least you get a couple of good pictures in the listing. I still have an eBay search saved for this book and get emailed if any copies show up. Unfortunantly, I lost a business location last December and am trying to get another one and have no extra money right now.

Well, I seem to recall Jeff Cannell sold his coverless copy of Daredevil #1 (after doing the wonderful scans he posted here on DCM) on eBay for over 200 USD. Problem is a coverless copy is considered out of the collectible range, but for very rare issues it may be very sought after.
An example are early DC or Timely issues, which sold well even coverless.

Personally, I prefer even a super-beaten up copy in fair-to-poor condition, but with a cover. :)

Rocket Kelly #1, which we need:

(http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/5412/screen1jp.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/822/screen1jp.jpg/)

we have Rocket Kelly nn, then #2. I believe this features the characters "Illuso", as yet unseen.

Wow, what a weird and curious character, Narfstar.
I was just wondering if there were stories where superheroes actually had to do with the italian army, and here's one. And what a nice copy, too. If I hadn’t imposed myself to not spend money during Lent, I would surely bid on your book.
Besides, the copy archived here at the DCM seems low resolution, and the Man of War story of lousy quality (it even says "incomplete").  :(
I guess it’s difficult to find stories where Italy and the italian army are actually shown (not the usual Mussolini satire).

P.S. From your eBay profile I see you are a teacher (primary school?). That’s just great to have children literate about the classics even if we are speaking of comics…  ;)

As of yet no bids so it might still be available after lent. If it receives no bids and you buy the Rocket Kelly and have it sent to me, I will send you the Man of War. Then I will scan the Rocket Kelly and put it up for sale for more books to buy. In other words if I sell my Man of War then I will be buying Rocket Kelly or if I get Cannonball then scan and sell it I will buy Rocket Kelly. I really need to see Illuso.

Hi narfstar, that’s very nice of you. I see it’s a fixed price auction so if it endures we could do so.
Otherwise, if the Rocket Kelly endures, we could accomodate this way (to optimize costs): I could buy your Man of War directly, and integrate better scans, and you can buy the Rocket Kelly, so we will have less shipping costs.
In fact, I don’t want to anticipate anything, but I am taking my time to scan some Lev Gleason Daredevil material and I hope to improve some fiches ones. I am making high resolution scans for me, so it takes a little more time. :)

Title: Re: eBay finds
Post by: vaillant on March 04, 2012, 12:21:51 PM
It all depends on the auction results. I hope it doesn’t get sold for 45 USD, these books look scarce, and even for a Fair copy I think narfstar has set a generous starting price.

In the meantime, I have realized it’s best to have VG (or even better lower grade) copies for scans. VG to FN copies tend to get creased and color cracks appear if you scan many pages. Sigh. :(
Ideally, it would be great to find Fair or coverless books with white pages, and avoid to scan from better grade books.

P.S. I think I will open a discussion to ask for your expertise in order to locate stories involving wartime Italy, the italian WWI army et al., and even occasional stories with Mussolini, the most original (covers are easier to locate).
For example, I’d love to have a copy of Detective #79, where the Boy Commandos fight him. :)

Stay tuned.

Listen narf, there are a pair of books (still missing here) for one of which I contacted the seller, since he ships US only.

Okay, with clearance from the seller I am bidding on the other as well.
Now wish me luck. All I say, is if I win, I will have two issues to scan of an incomplete series of 4 total issues, still missing here.
I hope to be able to go ahead with other scans this week, for my first contribution.
For now: many thanks for all the support and nice attitude, folks. ;)
Title: Re: eBay finds
Post by: vaillant on March 16, 2012, 12:45:07 PM
Yay, I got both, and at their starting price (well, of course shipping costs to Europe have their impact, but I can only be thankful: I seem to get this series is not easy, and pretty unapproachable in high-grade).
I don’t anticipate anything, I am pretty scaramantic until I have actually got the book, I just say currently on DCM there seem to be a single issue only (the series is of four) and I got other two. :)

I apologize if I haven’t uploaded yet, but I am (slowly) working on the scan of Daredevil Comics #12, which I am scanning in high resolution for my own; it takes a lot of time and I have little, but slowly but surely I will replace the fiche copy with a beautiful paper scan. :)

Wonder Comics #7:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230763954228&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:CA:1123

I don't have a scanner, but if nobody else bites I can buy it.

It's listed as 32 pages, which appears to be complete given the Comics.Org listing of 36 pages. 36-cover=32.

The seller confirms:
"These issues were thinner 32 pages and yes it is complete and only missing both covers

- basementcomics"

Hi Roygbiv,
unfortunately I can’t be of help with the scans for the distance, but I’m glad you bought it. I’m not familiar with "Wonder Comics", but it looks promising. The eBay seller "basementcomics" is great for these coverless copies, indeed. :)

On another matter, I guess I can cease being scaramantic since I already received the first comic book (shipped from New York, less than a week to get there: never received a package from the USA so quickly). It‘s issue 2 of "The Challenger" from Interfaith Publications. Now I just need to find the time to complete scanning the Daredevil #12 before that.

In fact, the Daredevil Comics #12 is already halfway, but I have little time, and since the book is a GD- I have also to handle it with care to prevent it from falling apart… But don’t worry, it will see the light!  ;)

While we are talking of "eBay finds", should it happen someone stumbles upon a copy of National Comics #17, I would greatly appreciate if you could tell me. I have bought a copy which is incomplete (missing centerfold and an additional half page) and although the seller has offered me a partial refund I find myself with a mutilated copy.

GL W!

Note - this issue IS on the Unscanned JVJ List and might someday be requested for scanning by Rangerhouse or one of the other JVJ Scanners.  So you might want to check the list before deciding to bid unless it's something you really wanted for your own collection anyway.

If you do win we certainly would welcome your scan of the issue for the collection.

Believe me, I'm not going to spend much on this one. I have a set price limit and if it goes over i'm done.

Edit: I won it. $12.50 after shipping didn't seem unreasonable to me. I don't have many Golden Age books, so I've been trying to pick up whatever I can. When I hold them in my hands I get this... feeling I guess. Like I'm in the presence of greatness or something. Anyway you can expect a scan and upload after I receive it. It will be my first full-book scan. I'm also waiting for Joe Palooka's Battle Adventures Vol.2 #71 which I'll scan the missing pages and fill the upload here already.

I wondered if there might be someone US-based who’d be willing to bid on this:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/Golden-Age-193855-/66/i.html?_nkw=our+flag+comics

The seller ships US only. Unfortunately I already bought a book from him and had it sent to an american friend of mine which should bring it to me next july, and he’s already been so nice I don’t feel like asking again.
Besides me being interested in the Unknown Soldier, I think it‘s missing from the DCM.
It‘s in Fair condition, so I guess hopefully it wouldn’t go for a high price.

I coincidentally noticed that THIS US-based Ebay store

http://stores.ebay.com/bthoven14?_trksid=p4340.l2563

is running 400 golden age / silver age comic books for the next five days.
Starting with prices from scratch!
Will take deep pockets in the end though...

I'd be interested in a dozen DCM-missing precode horror issues.
Is anyone of you guys already bidding there?

Maybe we could synchronize our bids here (haven't bidden yet) - just checking.
Will inform you if I bid.

There's a low grade Black Cat #2 on eBay right now.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/300873270965?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Bidding ends tomorrow morning. I'm not going to be home to bid on it. If there's a scanner that can get this one, it might go for a reasonable price.

Fighting Yank (1942 Nedor/Better) #7 PR 0.5
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Fighting-Yank-1942-Nedor-Better-7-PR-0-5-/360653418666?ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:CA:1123

Price is very steep for a poor issue, but it seems ridiculously hard to find. Also, first appearance of the Grim Reaper.

sigh

The current value is $130.00 according to ComicPriceGuide.com.
It seems to be that the prices posted for comics has been artificially
raised as of late. I see when looking for books on e-bay, I just pass
them by or I'll send a counter bid if they have that option available.

I often see "Fighting Yank" issues on eBay, but I think this may be the first time I've seen #7, it must be rare due to some ... random confluence of events.

You may have noticed I made a lot of purchases at the end of 2015. Well I have also picked up an Invisible Scarlet O'neil 1 to finish that series. I hope someone can take advantage of basement comics on ebay. Good grief the great stuff they have. They have Pop-pop and others which I have never seen show up before. They also have a lot of Australian Harvey comics and spanish Harvey comics that can go onsite. They have some needed giveaway comics also. I have spent all I can afford but have to get Children's Big Book for my one from each company collection.

Over on etsy, UK seller, InfiniteBooks, has a LARGE lot of what appears to be Copper & Modern age DC comics for CHEAP $23.54 for 100 books plus S&H (which for my location in the US thats 22.00, so it still would be less than 50 cents a book) and the listing says they have more available, The sample pic does not look like too bad a sampling Batman, Superman, Catwoman & Star Trek
