Title: Your Top Ten Most Wanted Comics on DCM
Post by: krankyboy on October 22, 2010, 03:23:33 AM
Just curious what the ten "holy grail" comic book titles or issues that you'd love to see on the site would be, if you had the choice. Mine would probably be the following:

The Eagle #1, #3, and a complete #4 (Fox Publications) starring the Eagle and Buddy
Weird Comics #18 and #20 (Fox Publications)
Blue Beetle - the remaining issues not posted (Holyoke/Fox)
Black Cobra Comics #3 (Ajax-Farrell)
Yankee Comics #2 (Chesler)
Banner Comics (Ace Comics) featuring The Lone Warrior. #3, 4, and 5 -- and Captain Courageous #6 (Ace Comics)
Black Terror (Nedor; any remaining issues)
Prize Comics (all remaining issues)
Cannonball Comics #1 (Croydon)
Dynamic Comics (Chesler)
 ;)

Listed in the order I thought of them:

Fantoman 3
The Comics Magazine 2
Amazing Mystery Funnies (any)
Stars & Stripes Comics 6 (c2c)
Amazing Adventure Comics 1 & 2
Masked Marvel (any)
Detective Eye 1 & 2
The Arrow 1 & 2
Keen Detective Funnies 23.  I'ld also like to see an update to Keen Detective Funnies 24 that included the missing Dr Darkness story.
Champ Comics 19 (last appearance of The Wasp)

Could not limit it to ten. These are the top limited runs that I would like to see completed. I would follow this by completing the Centaur and Chesler superhero books.

Green Giant 1
Colossus 1
Mad Hatter 2
Farmer's Daughter 3
Hyper Mystery 1,3
Kokonuts if it exists
Bang-Up 2-3
Superworld 1-2
Bomber 1-4
Challenger 1-2
Key Ring Comics 1

Green Giant 1

I forget where I saw it at the moment, but someone on the internet somewhere posted a small fiche image from the interior of this book to show how Green Giant's costume differed between the cover & the story.  So, there's something out there somewhere that someone has had access to.

I'd love to see the Chesler superhero titles completed as well, especially Dynamic Comics.

Regarding the Green Giant, I found this on the net:

"Less than a dozen copies of this incredibly-rare comic, which was distributed only in the New York City area, valued at several thousand dollars each, are thought to still exist!"

I guess that makes his first issue one of the holiest of grails (and a heck of a lot more rare than any of my choices). Wonder if the owner of one of those rare copies would ever scan it for everyone. At least, beyond the fiche image owner that bchat mentioned. At least we can dream. How different was Brent Wood's costume of the interior pages versus what he wore on the cover?

I posted this on the Public Domain Super Heroes site http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Green_Giant :
Quote
According to the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide (2000), Green Giant Comics #1 was an experiment to determine if the company could profitably manufacture and distribute comics with their otherwise idle printing presses. The Moreau Publishing company believes the book was never released to news stands.

Bookmark, bookmark, bookmark is the lesson.

Nah, the image was a very blurry cropped image of Green Giant, not worth taking note of where I saw it.  I usually bookmark pages whenever I plan to go back to them, and that particular page wasn't worth bookmarking.

The Golden Age Hero Directory (http://www.dpccomics.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/theamericancomicshop/goldenagedatabase/index.php?page=4&section=g) has a "micro hero" image of both costumes, which are as accurate as they're going to get.   Here's the image I saw compared to the cover image:

(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_kZwgYcSrHR8/TMHFwUEMLwI/AAAAAAAACAk/u_y3_VJWqrE/s800/001.jpg)(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_kZwgYcSrHR8/TMHGfYSWaYI/AAAAAAAACBA/SWooknBXLd0/s288/000%20green%20giant.jpg)I've seen Green Giant's real name listed as Ralph Brentwood, Mr Brentwood & Brent Wood.  It'ld be nice to see the actually story one day to find-out which it is.

By the way, Narf... isn't this available here at DCM? And was there a #1 issue?

One thing is for sure, the art is pretty nice. And I dig the character.  :)

I've got this sinking feeling we might not be seeing a complete issue for a while.  :'(

JUMBO COMICS #1 (Fiction House)
TOPS #1 and 2 (Lev Gleason)
BLACK CAT COMICS #2 (Harvey)
CAPTAIN MARVEL STORY BOOK #3 (Fawcett)
GREEN LAMA COMICS #6 (Spark)

My big wants would be Peter Wheat & Peter Wheat news.  Big surprise there, huh? :-)

It's worth noting that there are more than a few titles I wanted when I first discovered GAC that have been filled in- Animal Comics, Fairy Tale Parade, and Phantom Lady (both Fox and Ajax runs) are all up now, for example.
Title: Re: Your Top Ten
Post by: Poztron on November 02, 2010, 09:52:43 PM
Runs I'd love to see completed include (in no particular order):

St John's Whack Comics (one of the very best MAD comics imitators), their Meet Miss Pepper (Kubert art!), and any more of their Canteen Kate's by Matt Baker, if there were more than 3 issues.

All the missing comics in Quality titles such as Feature and Blackhawk. And I would love to have every fiche comic in the archive replaced with a paper scan. Call me a snob, but I can barely stand to look at a fiche file of a comic. Also, there are plenty of Quality love comics that deserve archiving with slick art by Gil Fox, Bill Ward, and others.

All the missing comics in Prize titles such as Justice Traps the Guilty and Prize Comics Western (Severin and Elder).

The missing Spirit Sunday sections.

All missing Fox titles such as Zoot 10, 12 and 15 (and complete scans of ones that are only partial). Also their Crimes by Women and Junior Comics (top Feldstein headlights).

All missing Harvey comics such as many issues of Speed Comics (many with Powell art, I believe).

All missing Lev Gleason and Hillman titles and issues...

And I could go on and on. We still have our work cut out for us.

I will keep my eye out, you bet! I've got a small stack of five or so comics to scan as soon as I can dig myself out from under the pile of other work I have to do. Unfortunately, none of them is especially thrilling, mostly run of the mill fills for so-so titles. I own a fair number of Quality and Fiction House titles (by fair number I mean maybe a dozen or two each), but they're all ones that have already been scanned. The bulk of the rest of my collection are either Atlas or DC or Marvel and/or too late to be public domain.

Hi Poz,
If you spot any scans where the original book was in poor condition or if your own copy is in superior shape please don't hesitate to scan your copy.
There are no rules against having more than one version on the site within reason.

Heh heh heh.  I just got something in the mail that might make you happy.

That Black Terror 018 was awesome, bcholmes. Thank you SO much.  :)

I feel like I keep having to revise my top ten because so many of the books keep getting knocked off. I know that Green Giant 01 was a big rarity on a lot of people's lists, and we've seen additions of all kinds of titles from superhero to western and romance. Anyway, I am redoing my ten and hoping some of them show up in 2012.

(1) Weird Comics #20 (Fox Publications)
(2) Banner Comics #4 and #5 (Ace Comics)
(3) Captain Courageous #6 (Ace Comics)
(4) The Eagle #1, and a complete #4 (Fox Publications) starring the Eagle and Buddy
(5) Captain Aero Comics #3 (Holyoke)
(5) Black Terror #1, #3, and #6 (plus issues that need completion) (Nedor)
(6) Dynamic Comics #2, #8 (on the way), #9-12 (Chesler)
(7) America's Best Comics; all missing issues (Nedor)
(8) Daredevil Comics #3-6, 8, 11-12, 14-15 (Lev Gleason)
(9) Prize Comics; remaining issues (JVJ has a ton of them)
(10) Cannonball Comics #1 with the Crash Kid! (Croyden)

Man, it's hard to narrow it down to ten. I also love Speed Comics (Harvey), Clue Comics (Hillman), Catman Comics (Holyoke), Bomber Comics (Gilberton) ... it just goes on and on...  ^-^

Believe me, I am grateful to all of you. This was one of those books which I wasn't sure would ever show up. I've been curious to read whether the Crash Kid story functions as an origin tale, or if it jumps in with him already working as a superhero.

And those books look great, Geo. Smashing colors!

Whenever I think of Buster Crabbe though, I always get Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon into my head. He really did have the perfect look for both of those characters.

Thanks to everyone involved on that Cannonball Comics 01 for knocking it off the #10 spot. I feel like I'm going to have to update my list weekly as the books are really rolling in these days.  :)

Yoc, I'm with you on those Heroic issues. The stories are fun and the colors are unbelievably vibrant. Harry Peter did some great work on Man O' Metal. Too bad he didn't tackle some of the other superhero characters, although I'm not complaining as Ben Thompson did a really nice job.

Darn, I am "desperately" looking for a Four Favorites #12 but there's only a super-ruined copy on eBay definitely overpriced… :(

Yep, he's the same one from Four Favorites. I'm really excited because I figured this comic would never show up, and I'm trying to get a complete run of Lone Warrior adventures from Banner Comics and Captain Courageous (this would actually be LW's final appearance in CC #6).

No worries about Daredevil Comics #12. Take your time.  :)

I could have easily spent a few hundred without even thinking about it. Terry has Dynamic Comics 11, 17, and 21 which we need in complete form, along with Bomber Comics 1 and 2 and a couple of issues of America's Greatest Comics. I had to seriously control myself and just limit the comic-buying to Captain Courageous this time out.

Rangerhouse will be doing the scanning, which is great because they always look so good when he does it. I'll be sending the book to him as soon as it comes in. Just hope that everyone at DCM enjoys it. I feel like I've been leeching off the time and money of other people, so this is sort of my opportunity to give back.

Rangerhouse has finished scanning Captain Courageous #6 and the pages look fantastic. Hopefully they'll be edited and ready for the website soon. But until then, RH put up a preview of the Lone Warrior story on DCM's Facebook page:

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.320048264733130.75172.106808696057089&type=1

And my own updated list:

(1) Weird Comics #20 (Fox Publications)
(2) Banner Comics #4 and #5 (complete; we've got a partial issue thanks to dsdaboss) (Ace Comics)
(3) The Eagle #1, and a complete #4 (Fox Publications) starring the Eagle and Buddy
(4) Bomber Comics 1, 2 (missing pages), and 4 complete
(5) Black Terror #1, #3, plus partial issues that need completion (Nedor)
(6) Dynamic Comics #2, #9-10, 17 (Chesler)
(7) America's Best Comics #3-5, 7-9, 14-15, 25, 29 (Nedor)
(8 ) Daredevil Comics #3-6, 8, 11-12, 14-15 (Lev Gleason)
(9) Prize Comics; remaining issues (JVJ has a ton of them)
(10) Atoman #2 (Spark Publications)

Thanks, Krankyboy, for all your effort. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find quiet moments to continue with my scans.
After the Daredevil, I’d have liked to scan two issues of the Challenger (Interfaith Publications), #2 and #4 which are missing.
But I don’t venture in any time estimation, just to let you know I have them.

Bomber Comics: Sooner or later I’d like to buy a copy of #2 (I’m interested in the Kismet story, for reproduction), but right now it’s not on the top of my priorities. It would be good to know the contents of the missing issues, even if incomplete.

I can’t put together a "Top Ten", since I usually buy what I can afford & care about, and the DCM has been great precisely for knowing what’s inside specific issues, to get to know titles & publishers et al.
So I guess I’d better start with some donation instead of just wandering around…  :(

One curiosity which would be on my list, however, is Future Comics (McKay Publications), since the four issues feature "Saturn against the Earth", probably the only italian comic strip which made to the US in the 1940s, so here I go:

(1) Future Comics #1-4 (McKay Publications)

Just checked Terry's website to see if they had a copy of Future Comics, but no dice.  :(

However, I'm currently looking into Dynamic Comics #11 with Dynamic Man and Yankee Boy. It's a little pricey, but I really want us to have a complete run here at DCM, so...

Purchase has been completed. Terry is going to mail it by the end of next week. And then it's going right to Rangerhouse.  :)

Hope that it's a good one. That just leaves 2, 9, 10, and 17 (and a complete version of 21) for Dynamic Comics. I can't believe we're getting within striking distance of finishing that title.

Dynamics are often sought after by collectors merely for the covers, that‘s why they are rare/pricey.  :'(
Maybe they were also printed on a worse paper? Don’t know.

I have updated my list:

(1) National Comics #6, 9 (Quality)
(2) Uncle Sam Quarterly #2-6 (Quality)
(2) Future Comics #1-4 (McKay Publications)

And I add my "wantlist", meaning books for my wartime-themed research which I not only need to read/consult but also to keep:

(1) Four Favorites #12
(2) Boy Comics #13
(3) National Comics #11
these on top of my priorities right now. If it happens you stumble upon them, please let me know.

I’m also looking for a coverless National Comics #17 (I have an incomplete copy with missing pages).

I just felt like I was mooching off everyone else and wasn't contributing enough. So this is really my way of "donating to the cause," so to speak.

I'm hoping to find Banner Comics 4 and 5, and some of the missing Dynamic issues. But I'll also be expanding into Bomber Comics, Wow Comics, Master Comics, and maybe some of the Fighting Yanks and Wonder Comics issues that Roygbiv666 mentioned earlier in the thread. Clue Comics, too.  :)

By the way, the sound you hear is my wallet screaming in terror.

If you want my opinion, since I seem to get you’re generally uninterested to keep the issues, I think it would be better to buy them in GVG to VG.
They’ll be more costly, but it will be easier to resell them.
Also (I’ve seen RH listings on eBay), if auctions aren’t the preferred venue, I would suggest trying the CGC Forum marketplace first. This would allow to keep the prices slightly lower, and possibly sell faster. There are a lot of nice people putting GA issues on sale, at various prices.

A completed run of Frankenstein Comics (Prize) would be at or near the top of any list from me.

Wow, I didn't realize just how many issues there were in Frankenstein Comics! He seems to be a really popular character, so I'm sure a lot of people would like to see that title completed, not to mention the rest of the issues of Prize Comics where he appears. By the way, have any of you seen the 60's Dell Comics version where he literally is a costumed superhero complete with a secret identity?

Meanwhile, RH has informed me that Dynamic Comics #17 has just been purchased with the rangerhouse/krankyboy fund, and it's c2c. So another one has been taken off my list.

Now if I could just find Dynamic Comics #9.... :)

And speaking of lists, RH has just found a Dynamic Comics #16, so that just leaves #9 before we'll have a complete run. Final fills for JUMBO COMICS.

One book I would be delighted to see made available but which probably isn't a priority for anyone else is "Master Comics" #49 which contains the last Minute Man story as well as the second part of the Bulletboy story. Granted, "The Mimic and the Mite" which is the first part of the Bulletboy story isn't exactly classic or even a significant minor story in the Fawcett line but I've always had a movie serial mentality and I'd like to know how the second part turns out. I'd also like to see the last Minute Man story just simply because it was the last one.

They've actually got a copy of Master Comics #49 c2c over at Metropolis Comics and Collectibles. It's not too expensive, so if nobody else has it -- I could pick it up and get it over to RH for scanning. I've always wanted to read the second part of the Bulletboy/Tod Drake story as well. Too bad the character didn't show up again after that.

I have some I'd like to see that I don't think have been mentioned yet.

Circus...The Comic Riot (1938) 1-3  These are so rare that GCD doesn't have them indexed.  I read a copy of #1 a couple of decades ago.  It has a strip titled Spacehawks by Basil Wolverton.  I believe this also has Jack Cole's first published work.

Wow...what a magazine (1936)  1-4 Early Eisner and other people

Rex Dexter Of Mars  # 1

Minute Man 1-3  there must be paper copies out there somewhere

Slam Bang 1-7  Ditto

I got a new digital camera for Christmas and I am hoping that it will actually function as a means to capture comics with enough detail to put into a .cbz file for the site. This will be a test if it turns out that he has one of the issues missing from the site. Of course, the snow would HAVE to stop falling in California for these things to work properly....

Peace, Jim (|:{>

Happy New Year. And thanks to Blastaar for all the nice comments.

Very nice new guys thanks!
Jim, new member CBpop has shown me some great digital picture page scans he's done proving a consumer camera can produce a decent scan if the lighting is perfect.  I'll forward you his email and examples.

Will do Snard.
Btw, please include '-upgrade' at the end of any improvements like this in the future so people are aware at a glance something new has been added.
I've removed the old one and tweaked yours.

Len (freddyflly) likes to do upgrades on his original uploads so if you spot a cover or have missing pages he welcomes people to send them to him and he'll do the upgrade uploads.  I'll let him know about your latest one and see what he wants to do with his original.

I still want the missing Peter Wheat material, Kelly issues in particular.  But hope is fading on those these days; a VG-FN copy on eBay is currently at $125 and that's my threshold on the book right now.  For what it's worth, that's about somewhere around 5x guide...

The one book I'd like to see on this site is Fawcett's All-Hero Comics from 1943. It was a 100-page 15 cents book that only lasted one issue. The problem was timing. It was intended as a companion to their America's Greatest. But the wartime paper shortage killed it. Pity. Anyone have a copy they can upload?

Regarding the Green Giant, I found this on the net:

"Less than a dozen copies of this incredibly-rare comic, which was distributed only in the New York City area, valued at several thousand dollars each, are thought to still exist!"

...

What am I missing? GG is available on this site, under Small Press http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=17170

Maybe this falls in the Top Ten Least Wanted Comics category....

As grateful as the completist within me is for all the Charlton scans being done, I still harbor a wish that Charlton could be relegated to the bottom of the stack of comics to be scanned.

This is in no way a criticism of the hard work going into scanning them, but a little voice within me keeps piping up saying "surely there are other treasures to be found in JVJ's marvelous collection that could be scanned before getting around to the Charltons." <g>

That said, I feel guilty enough about my mini-gripe that I'm going to scan the FC, IFC, IBC and BC missing from the present scan on site of Doll Man #46. Just came across it in my disordered and funky collection.   ;)

I realize that, Geo, and I am not knocking anyone whatsoever. If new scans are Charltons, so be it. We are all in the debt of the scanners (and JVJ) for their hard work. No question.
I should mention that I think that even Charlton published some decent work from time to time (Ditko comes to mind).
Nuff said.

Hmm...Since the two stories up here from Thrilling Comics #32 are probably my scans, I wouldn't be surprised if that book didn't turn up sometime in the not too distant future. I was considering it for my anniversary countdown, but opted for scanning Startling #28 instead. (Fewer pages at a time when I was doing a lot of scanning.)

I can also upgrade Prize #20 with 300dpi scans and ifc and ibc scans, but alas, my copy is also centerfold-less.

I don't have a top "10" list at this moment, but the one I thought we would never see was Buster Crabbe #5 by Eastern. Eric found a copy which he left me scan and then a few months ago I found my own copy and could replace the last page of his book that had been cut out on the bottom half of the page. I'm sure I could come up with a few more after thinking on it a bit.

I don't have a top 10 as such, but (beyond my well known Peter Wheat obsession) Target v1 n6-8 are very high on my want list.  6 is gettable but 7 is crazy expensive and 8 is crazy scarce.  (8 was the last book they were looking for for the Bill Everett archives collections, last I heard.)

Two that would have been on my list were crossed off since DCM start.  The recently shared 'Rhymes With Lust' and Colossus Comics from a while back.
I've never taken a shot at a Top 10 list but here are a few that I'd really, really love to see scanned from paper and on the site some day!

I'm updating my want list to include the missing pages from Lightning Comics Vol. 2 #6 and Super-Mystery Comics Vol. 3 #4 because I am a newly minted Doctor Nemesis fan.  The final 4 pages of Speed Comics #1 are damaged and I'd like to them in complete form.  I'm also hoping for a better version of Spy Smasher #10 as well since I like that "Why I Did Not Kill Hitler!" story.  And a better version of any Fawcett comic that is fiche.

I fixed your post here DM.  You had it sooo small nobody could ever read it.
Please gang, let's not play with all the bells and whistles.  Especially the font size option.

A good way to lose formatting if you are on a Windows computer is to paste the text into Notepad. Copy the plain text from notepad and then re-paste it where you want the non-formatted text to be.

“Tops” by Lev Gleason publications. It only ran for 2 issues and it was expressly geared to adults; the brainchild of Charles Biro.

Thanks for your posts gang.

One of mine just showed up.  A smallish scan of Fox's Wonder Comics #1 was finally shared on Facebook.
It's better than the fiche scan but we would certainly welcome a better scan if it were ever possible!
It will be going up on DCM at some point soon.

Here are some of my most sought ones:

- Champion Comics #10 and Champ Comics #18 - The only remaining PD comics missing that are connected to the main Marvel universe with Duke O'Dowd!
- A new version of Feature Comics #27 which currently is missing it's last page for the Clock.
- A new version of Crack Comics #14 which is currently missing the last page of the Madam Fatal story.
- Technically not Comics (or are they?), but maybe they are in the public domain and I might see them someday: the 4 Dime Action Novels by Fawcett featuring Capt. Marvel, Spy Smasher, Minute Man and Bulletman
- A full scan of Complete Book of Comics and Funnies #1 (currently we have the Wonderman story of it in a collection somewhere on the site)

One day some of these will pop up on the newly added feed and I will be a happy boy, until then I applaud and thank every contributor for the vast amount of PD library we have here so far. There is no shortage of comics to read that is for sure!

I just got 2 last week: Goofy Comics 6 and 9 from 1943.  ;D  So, I know it's likely I'll get SOME of these before I pass on.  Probably not all.
