I decided to (at least look into) getting some comic art commissions done, primarily "fake" comic covers. Basically, I'm pretending the public domain superheroes continued to be published after WWII just like DC and Marvel, with the simplifying caveat that they were all bought by one company.
So, I want some covers done that reflect various time periods (Silver Age, Bronze Age, etc.), culminating in some inter-company crossover covers (DC/Marvel/Other).
I'm unsure whether or not to "pretend" these crossovers started in the 60s/70s/etc., or just recently.
I wanted Al Plastino to re-do Adventure #300 (I know, it was Curt Swan, but he was doing Superman at the time and inked an interior) with PD characters, for example.
Anyway, I wanted to have, for example, a cover done in the 1970s style of John or Sal Buscema (Avengers cover), and can't decide to keep it simple with just the PD characters, or a crossover with the AVengers and have both PD/Marvel characters on it. That is - I'm losing focus!!
IDEAS?? But not of the "include this character" type, just concepts.

If you plan to recreate a "Silver Age" feel for any of these covers, you can't go wrong following Julius Schwartz's top five cover formulas:
5. Show the planet Earth in danger. (http://www.comics.org/issue/16193/)

Yeah, Plastino is $1800 for a cover. Depends on who you get.
I don't drink/smoke/gamble/do drugs/buy expensive cars/frequent prostitutes/take proper vacations. Also, no kids. So - I have some "disposable" income and don't plan on dying rich.
And I saw those One-Minute Laters - nice.

I'd say you got some good replies Roy.
That link I gave you has many people talking about commissions, etc on it.
What theme/characters you choose is a personal choice.
Learning which character the artist likes might also help with favourable results.
I'm a big fan of Centaur, MLJ, FH and Quality but what exactly would I request from an artist? No idea off hand. 'Poker Night at HQ'? Hehe.
I knew one person that asked all the artists he met to do a drawing of Snoopy.
Strange? Yep, but they almost all did it for him.

All of 'em in a way. I think I'll be doing some "crossover" type covers at this point. The classic JLA #21 (first JLA/JSA) would be good, I've been digging up others. I think I'll just make the crossovers start in the 1940s, and do some covers representative of the decade or something.

Yeah, I understand the appeal of getting a professionally drawn Batman, but can you imagine how tired these artists must be of the same thing, over and over?
My approach is kind of "wouldn't it have been cool if ..." and get the scene.

Another idea I just had was just superheroes beating down Nazis, with the further refinement that the heroes should have a skull and/or crossbones motif on their costume, but I've run out of them:
Blazing Skull/Destroyer (Timely)
Grim Reaper/Black Terror (Nedor)
Nighmare (of Nightmare and Sleepy "fame")
umm ..... anyone else I'm missing?

Hembeck has always been a favourite of mine but I think Mitch Ballard's work especially the 'Golden Agers Who's Handbook' is very very well done.

Yeah, Mitch is really good, obviously a George Perez disciple, which is good. I want him to do a few more, then I'll move on to some other artists.
I've also got a Golden Age/Silver Age one coming up that's pretty sweet.
Eventually, I think I'll have had the Black Orchid appear in more commissions than she did panels in her two appearances back in the day. Sad.

That's a good one, Geo,
you didn't have time to see even a fraction of what I've got lying around here. I keep surprising myself, more often than not, with what I stumble over. I didn't show you my original Alex Toth page from Rip Hunter #6 with the Giant Robot or my original Harry Rountree illustration from the 1911 Strand Magazine first appearance of Conan Doyle's The Lost World, either (the story of how I ended up with THAT is a real doozy). It's scary just the extent of what's sitting in piles (well, you saw some of them...) here.
I guess I need to display the Alcala piece more prominently - I'm certainly tickled pink to have it. Likewise a beautiful Charles Vess original from Stardust and a gorgeous William Stout troll piece, both of which Karen owns and really need to be framed and hung. We're celebrating 40 years of living together next week (The IDES of March, 1971 is when we moved in together) and perhaps I should take it upon myself to do that for her.
Thanks for making me think of this. I've been wondering what I could give her...

Errr...Reese does commissions if you can navigate through the labyrinth, avoid the minotaur, and decipher the hidden message explaining how to contact him?
Not that I have work for him right this minute, but it's very difficult to do anything about it if/when I do, if I have to go door to door looking for him. Or fight that damned minotaur again.

In case anyone is interested, Mr. Plastino is expensive, but available and can be reached through his website (!).
I found tracking down a lot of artists surprisingly difficult; I just assumed everyone had a website - not so. But a bit of Googling can work wonders.
The Golden Age still has some representative kicking (which reminds me - I need to ask Sheldon Moldoff for something Batman-y), Silver Age same, but even the Bronze Agers are going (Jim Aparo, Dick Giordano, etc.). Act now before they're gone :-(

Actually, I'm mashing all the PD characters into one company ("Standard Comics" - they seemed to be one of the few with a logo) in order to simplify my theme of pretending that the characters never disappeared from real world comic shelves - they all were part of the "Standard Comics Universe". So, there would be DC, Marvel, and Standard. Check out the other pix in the gallery for more on the idea.

In keeping with this particular response, I'm lookin' for some ideas for fake comic covers from the Golden to Bronze Age. I'm trying to create fake covers for the "Standard Comics Universe" as if all these PD charcters never became PD, but continuted to be published from Golden Age to today (although my focus tends to end in the early 1980s when I stopped collecting in real life).
I was thinking mainly team books (to maximize the number of characters) that depict certain recurring themes (or cliches, depending on your charitibility) like:
a hero dies (apparently)
hero(es) defeated (apparently)
traitor!
"let's all run towards the viewer"
strike a pose - heroes pose for a picture
monitor screen - a bunch of characters's heads on monitor screens
Anything else?

How's this for a Silver/Bronze Age type villain:
Cyborilla, half ape, half whatever mechanical device he wants to be - in this case, a sort of flying saucer with menacing mechanical arms, etc?
Think he can be both a funny Silver Age villain AND yet still be menacing in the Bronze Age.
And, also "Cyb" + "orilla" I find hilarious!

I think next up is a Super Hero team up book (like Marvel Two in One or Brave and the Bold) with a golden ager and a modern/futuristic hero. And a villain you may have seen before ...
I'm thinking of a John Byrne commisison with the Claw, but that's like 4-5 months budget.
Yoc, that's one of the challenges - there aren't really a lot of Golden Age costumed super villains, mainly Nazis and mad scientists and gangsters. Which means I really need to create some.
Makes me think of a Super Villain team-up book would be fun too. The Claw needs love too! ;)

Twilight reminds me of Wildcat, and Stormy Foster (the Great Defender) is more-or-less like Hourman but trying to figure out someone who is the equivalent of Johnny Thunder is tough. The best I can do is Mystic Moot, and I don't think it works.

JLA:
Batman - I'm of two minds. I think that, from the point of view of character "feel", Ace's Raven is the one I'd most associate with Batman, but Black Terror also capitalizes on that "I have a kid sidekick" aspect.
Flash - Silver Streak. I don't think there are enough Golden-Agers with "just" super-speed. They all have lighting bolts or super strength in the mix, too, it seems.
Aquaman - Barry Kuda! Even has some visual similarity to Aquaman.
Hawkman - I like Airman -- for some reason, his costume strikes me as nifty (in a cheezy way), even though the stories are rather lacklustre.
Green Arrow - Arrow seems like the obvious choice, but maybe mix it up with Swiftarrow or Red Panther? Swiftarrow has the advantage of being a bit more visually distinctive
Black Canary - I think that Lady Blue keeps up the bird motif, even though the powers are very different.
JSA:
Wonder Woman - There aren't many good PD characters who are enough like Wonder Woman. Amazona is one (but a truly bland costume). Moon Girl is another (although some are a bit scared by her EC origins) .
Dr. Mid-Nite - Nightro is my favourite, here. Similar look (goggles); similar schtick (blind, but can see in the dark)
Robin - I think Kid Terror is the way I'd go (similarity with the mask, plus a striking insignia), but I could also see someone like Eaglet, here -- the bird association is nice, but I think that Eaglet might be harder to recognize.

Wow, I love your JSA choices BCH. WW really is a hard one to figure out. Moon Girl makes as much sense as anything. Black Canary is another tricky one. I said Madam Fatal as a joke but they both wear wigs... that not close enough? ;)
Black Terror/Timmy sound good as Batman/Robin substitutes.

I neglected to mention that instead of the JLA it would be my own super-group, the Sentinels (see http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=812999&GSub=107702 ) and the Freedom Brigade (see http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=816767&GSub=107702 ).
At any rate, here are my thoughts on it for anyone interested:
JLA:
Batman - Obvious answer is Black Terror, with his old sidekick "Tim" standing in for Robin. Slightly less obvious, but even better is the Black Lion (and "Cub") as they are based on animals (like Batman and Robin) AND the ears ;-)
Flash - Silver Streak is the only way to go. Speed Centaur f'rinstance ain't happening;
Aquaman - The Shark or Barry Cuda are, no offense, super lame. I'm going with Hydroman, as I've already established him as being in the Sentinels;
Hawkman - Airman, I prefer his costume to the Eagle's;
Green Arrow - I like The Arrow, but the Spider is cool too;
Black Canary - Black Cat would sort of be the obvious one, or Blue Lady as mentioned.
JSA:

She's a chick, a demi-goddess, and has at least a distinictive costume element (the weird headband/feathers thing). Plus, also a future (past?) Freedom Brigade member (and past and future (?) Sentinels member). Whew.

Robin - As above, it would be Cub;
Wildcat - I like the Cat-Man idea, I think I'll go with that;
Hourman - :-/ stupid drug addicts
Johnny Thunder - Zongar!!! Plus his imp for fun (maybe he's making the cloud they're in).
Here's the monkey wrench in the whole thing. Black Lion and Cub totally match, as does Blue Lady (or Black Cat). However, my current obscure faves are the Grim Reaper and the Black Orchid, so I was going to use them. And move Orchid over beside Reaper (who's filling in Batman's position), cause - they be knockin' boots, yo. Oh, and that means I was going to use a grown up Kid Terror or Kid Fury or Cub, but then ... no sidekick/hero relation going on .... damn. And Robin is the most prominent character in the image. Hmm..
That kind of destroys the parallels though. Not decided on that one. Which option will I regret less after it's bought and paid for? Who knows.
Also - the original artist, Ernie Chan, is still around and taking commissions ... and his rates aren't bad .... hmmm ....

I don't think that's a big deal, though. I mean, in the original image, it was Earth-2 Robin and Earth-1 Batman. I don't think the relationship between those two was drawn on to make the image work.

It's an amazing collection of characters though I wouldn't call them strictly independents (which I read as from the b&w independent publishers era started by TMNT, etc as well as AC, Comico, First Comics, Kitchen Sink, Pacific and so on.). There's several DC and Marvel products there that aren't part of their superhero universe which I guess qualifies them. There are toys and Villain & Vigilantes characters even which is totally cool. The 80s was when I did my heaviest buying so this is a perfect look back for me.

I'd hope so! I think he did most of these types, certainly the examples I sent Mike Machlan, the artist - he does a lot of AC Comics covers. I was thinking about the composition - it probably follows the rule of thirds, but the way comics would have been arranged on the news stands, it makes sense to have the hero coming in from upper left.

a) I'm not a Christian, and
b) Nelvana is the daughter of an Inuit deity.
And I wanted the foreground figures to be bigger, so he made it work.

I had a hard time deciding which thumbnail to go with, but I think #3 was my least favorite - I don't really care for the "everybody lined up on either side" approach. To each his own

OK, so I'm having some fun with the whole commissioning stuff. My super hero team book, The Sentinels, is developing with some parallels to the JLA and Avengers.
Any thoughts on villains/heroes/situations that DC and Marvel both have that I can parallel in mine? I'm toying with a villain like DC's Amazo and Marvel's Super-Adaptoid. And the White Streak could fill a Red Tornado/Vision role.

Another idea I just had was just superheroes beating down Nazis, with the further refinement that the heroes should have a skull and/or crossbones motif on their costume, but I've run out of them:
Blazing Skull/Destroyer (Timely)
Grim Reaper/Black Terror (Nedor)
Nighmare (of Nightmare and Sleepy "fame")
umm ..... anyone else I'm missing?
Quality's Jester wore a skull emblem on his chest in some of his earlier stories. but putting a death symbol on a Jester didn't really work and the emblem went away within a year (probably a few months less).

2. Blow up digitally and pencil in photoshop with a tablet.
3. Print out in a light non-photo blue onto bristol paper.
4. Usually I jump right in with ink onto the bristol but sometimes I'll do a bit of traditional pencilling if I want to work something out a bit more."

Cosmic Crossover Special #1 (January, 1965)
Co-Publishers: DC, Marvel, Standard
Writer: Some Hack
Released around October, 1964 this Silver-Age tale unites the premiere super-teams of the Justice League of America (then on issue 33), the Sentinels (#35), and newcomers, the Avengers (on iissue 12) for the first time. And all for only 25 cents!! On television, another team called the Avengers enjoyed great popularity, Gunsmoke was entering its 10th season, and the Rolling Stones debuted on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Kang and the Lord of Time traverse the same space-time co-ordinates (at the same time!(?) - it's comics in the 1960s, it can totally happen) and the resulting crossing of the time streams (and travellers and machines) enables them to discover the ability to cross from one parallel universe to another (really, what the heck's the difference between parallel universes and divergent timelines?). Cyborilla's recent experiments in time viewing alerted him to their actions and he contacts them both via his viewer. Together they hatch a plan to rule the Earths of each others' dimension (i.e. Kang takes over the Standard Comics Universe, Cyborilla takes DC, and Lord of Time gets Marvel).
They recruit some of their fellow villains (two from each Universe, I guess they were trying to save money) to eliminate the premiere superhero teams from each Universe. Catching the heroes unaware, the villains defeat the heroes and exile them to Limbo, between the Universes.

Pooling their resources, the heroes are able to free themselves from the prison in Limbo, using Green Lantern’s Power Ring, Thor’s hammer, and Nelvana powers. The heroes, of course, decide to team up, and break into groups consisting of:

Aquaman, Flash, Iron Man, Nelvana, and Magno; and

I think he does superior good girl art as well - I think I'd have been tempted to have him do an all women team-up if I could afford the money. He does some nice looking aliens as well.

Not quite re-mortgaging, but he's relatively expensive (otherwise he'd never be able to leave his drafting table) but he always goes all out for commissions, so it's worth it.

Thanks Roy. I have spent a lot of time today going through some of the art available. Most of what I could afford does not have the feature that I want. For me Glanzman was the Hercules artist, Pike was Black Diamond and Murph was Hawkman. I wrote the agent for Glanzman asking about a sketch of Hercules #2 cover. I remember an ad from many years ago for LB Cole commissions that by today's standards would be really cheap. Too bad I did not take advantage of it.
I am not a big Byrne fan. Most of his work does not grab me. But your commission is an exception.

The 'horrific' brain in a jar is a recurring trope (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BrainInAJar), but it would likely be more horrific to be the brain than to see it.

The Sentinels encounter perhaps their greatest foe, the (would be) world conquering Dreadhelm!
Newest members Fighting Yank, Marksman, Wildfire, and The Flame fight alongside Nelvana to stop this Alexander the Great wannabe from taking over (for our own good).
He would return time and time again to plague them, and even superheroes of other universes!

I just commissioned my first piece ;D Frank McLaughlin is going to do a Judomaster for me. It will be similar to Judomaster 97

TNT Todd is wrestling a bit with some insecurity when a team-mate falls, but as Nelvana walks through the Sentinels' history with him, his confidence returns and it's back to business. The a$$-kicking business!

Crisis in the Standard Comics Universe

What a bastard.
So, naturally, superheroes (hmmm - I'd imagine that Standard Comics would co-own the trademark on the term "superheroes" with DC and Marvel) of the SCU show up to battle him. At this moment, it's these 6 heroes dealing with him. I'd imagine that once Fantomah or Stardust show up, they're guaranteed to drive him off.
Roll Call:
The Anti-Monitor vs
Optima, UltraMan, Dr. Quantum, Nelvana, Star-Storm, and Magno.
By the "present day" of 1985-ish, the SCU seems to be more of my stuff (Optima, UltraMan, Dr. Quantum, and Star-Storm) than old Public Domain characters (Nelvana, Magno), but that's the way rampant narcissism works.
How, exactly, the SCU's (or Marvel's for that matter) Multiverse continue to exist after COIE is unclear, they must be so different or separated by some barrier that DC's Multiverse is different from theirs. Or maybe it's just fiction and we shouldn't worry about ... no, no - I'm going with different. The SCU Multiverse is different, yeah, that's the ticket.
The great Val Semeiks brings the idea to life, going so far as to develop some special effects for the character's individual powers. Funny enough co-inky-dink, the four fundamental forces of the universe are represented by the super-heroes powers: electromagnetism, gravity, strong and weak nuclear forces. Neato.

In this issue, flighty genius inventor Charles 'Whiz' Wilson (and his time travel device, the Futuroscope) has appeared at Freedom's Stronghold in Philadelphia, and offered to take some of the members to the European war theatre to fight the Nazis.
Before they can even answer, he transports them to -- a barn; not exactly the front line they were expecting. Orchid is annoyed, and the Face is not happy with Wilson's explanation of where they are.
Calling out from above comes a voice demanding, "Who are you people, and what are you doing in my war?!?!". The Grim Reaper, who has been operating behind enemy lines for years by this point, has appeared and is not pleased by the interruption of these dilettantes. I think he was waiting for the cover of darkness to start a raid on a Nazi rural base. That, or he likes alone time in barns - he's awesome, who's to argue!?

During the late 80s and early 90s, the "Standard Comics Encyclopedia" had successfully put their stable of characters into various merchandising, including action figures. The next step was a weekly Saturday Morning cartoon show.
Featuring the core Sentinels (Optima, UltraMan, Raven, Dr. Quantum, Crimson Streak, Black Orchid, and the Grim Reaper) the show ran for 4 seasons.
The recurring villains included Dreadhelm, Emulex, Deathless Brain, Count Orlok, Cyborilla, Nega-Man, and the Eliminator.

Although the "nutritious" nature of the snacks is ... debatable, the ads are remembered fondly by that generation, when super-hero comics were fun, not brooding and dismember-y.
Of course, Standard Comics ran its fair share of them. This one features that Simian Savant, the Mighty Cyborilla during one of his schemes. That is, until he is foiled by the ingenuity of TNT Todd -- and the deliciousness of Hostess Fruit Pies.
The ad was featured in February issues of 1979, including "Freedom Brigade" #5, "Optima" #55, "Standard Comics Team-Up" #190, and "The Sentinels" #204.

Ah, the Hostess ads.
A million years ago I created a couple of pages for a fanzine sendup of the old Buyer's Guide. I barely remember the details, like who published it. I think it was printed tabloid size on newsprint like the real thing. Amyway, I assembled a fake Hostess ad using cut-and-pasted xerox copies of grisly Warren horror panels (long before PC's and Photoshop!).
Like the real ads said...there was "A big delight in every bite!"

If you look into how to write a comic script, practice, refine story so it flows and is clear and everything I would HIGHLY suggest giving it a shot. Rather than a lot of really cool original pages you could have your own story.

The basic idea is a sociopathic version of Doctor Who. Very similar to the 'real' Doctor, except he just doesn't care about his companions. Shudder over that one.

A charming and likable man, the Traveler often brings companions with him on his adventures.
PANEL 4-6
His companions rarely survive for long, as he has no real concerns for their safety.
PANEL 7
Terrified of 'winking out of existence', he never travels back to before his original encounter with the time traveler he betrayed, he has no qualms about wreaking havoc any where (and when) else.
PANEL 8
He has become a figure of fear throughout time and space, he is -- the Traveler.

The Traveler (would) exist in the Standard Comics Universe. Evidently while some writer was trying to come up with the villain-of-the-month he was watching too much PBS and decided to do this villainous take on Doctor Who.

Partly the idea behind it - since these characters are essentially "empty suits" it's hard for an artist to just draw them.
If an artist didn't know Superman or Wolverine, he might have them posed or acting out of character. Same with my made up ones and the old PD characters.
These entries are, hopefully, a little more interesting than just some model sheet/turnaround.
Also, when I get enough, I hope to do a PrintOnDemand issue and sell well in excess of 1 copy. ;-)

The Final Countdown Europe is the best and could make a nice cover.
Black Sabbath Sabotage is interesting. Perhaps introducing a mirror universe?
Stryken First Strike... either the introduction of a team of villains or it's the '90s and the team has new X-treme costumes.
ManOWar Anthology... it's the '70s, Mike Grell has just left drawing the Legion and has come to Standard and designed new costumes for the team. (I love Mike Grell's art, but his costume designs...)

THE STANDARD COMICS ENCYCLOPEDIA -- coming soon to an online store near you.
I began commissioning comic art in 2010 and quickly settled into pieces featuring old public domain superheroes with the idea that "Standard Comics" (a real company until the 1950's) bought all these characters and published them together in a shared universe. Eventually my own creations crept into the mix. Basically, the idea was that each of the fake covers or interiors to these imaginary comics were a sort of window into another universe where the heroes of "Standard Comics" were as famous as those at DC or Marvel.
In a small way, I think the idea is reflective of this thought from Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges:
"Writing long books is a laborious and impoverishing act of foolishness: expanding in five hundred pages an idea that could be perfectly explained in a few minutes. A better procedure is to pretend that those books already exist and to offer a summary, a commentary."

The next logical step, apparently, was to prepare a version of DC's "Who's Who" or Marvel's "Official Handbook", the "Standard Comics Encyclopedia" chronicling the adventures of said characters. I love this idea. I am talking to an artist friend about working on a comic using PD characters. Just read all the appearances of the Duke of Darkness last night. And realized how great a character he is. So we are gonna try using him as our main hero.

Many artists have info on their websites regarding commissions and are happy to discuss subject matter, price etc. You can also check the various comic-art dealers as they often handle the business end of the commissions.

"Standard Comics Encyclopedia (Abridged)" is a 30+ page comic in the style of Marvel's Handbook and DC's Who Who series: a group of illustrated profile entries on the exciting characters who populate the "Standard Comics Universe".
The comic will be available in hard copy and digital form from IndyPlanet in the next few months.
Several Public Domain characters (Magno, TNT Todd, Count Orlok, and others) are featured alongside a large number of my own original characters (Optima, UltraMan, Raven, etc.).
If all goes well (hint hint, if I sell some copies and generate enough interest), I'll look into doing a traditional comic book featuring some of them. Here's hoping.

I just finished reading the 'Nelvana of the Northern Lights' collection which I'd recommend. A couple things come to mind.
One - she appears to not be the public domain. The forward tells the story of her copyright.
The other is she travelled in her first adventures with her brother, an equally powered being who could only appear as a giant Great Dane when white people are around. He would transform when she put her cloak over him.

here's what I posed to PDSH on her entry:
As I wished to use original images of Nelvana in a print on demand comic, I contacted both Corus and the National Archives to determine if that was copyright infringement. This is part of what I was told in writing:
Library and Archives Canada holds joint copyright with Nelvana Ltd. only for the published comics held in the Bell Features fonds in our collection. If you were to simply reproduce images, etc. ‘as is’ from these specific comics, Library and Archives Canada and Nelvana Ltd. would issue a licence to you. This is not the case with your current project which is to redefine the Nelvana character. Therefore, a licence from Library and Archives Canada is not required.
Library and Archives Canada holds no rights to any trademarks or other moral rights (i.e. modifications to images) in the Bell Feature comics, more specifically, to the Nelvana of the Northern Lights character.
Based on the material I supplied previously (see "Public Domain") above, it appears to be that the copyright to the Bell Features comics was bought and ultimately sold to Corus/NAC. Although they hold no right or interest in the use or modification of the image of the character, they appear to hold copyright in the Bell Features comics themselves.
Take that for what you may. For further information on the issue, contact Corus/NAC directly. 'Moral rights' is a feature of Canadian copyright law and would reside with the Dingle Estate.

THE PAINTED LADY:
In preparing the write-ups for the "Standard Comics Encyclopedia" I needed some filler material, so I came up with this super-villain called "The Painted Lady" (which was an old slang term for prostitute). Blame Kevin Moorhead for the name - a dirty old man apparently. Just imagine some writer/artist sneaking that past the CCA censors back in the day.
So, I needed a design and contacted the Brothers Fraim.
Here's the text I'd come up with, so they could develop something for her:
While attending an art gallery opening, a super-villain calling herself the “Painted Lady” appeared from out of a painting. She proceeded to terrorize the gallery patrons by bringing creatures from the paintings themselves to life. After switching to her Black Orchid costume, Diana Dawn was able to drive the Painted Lady back into the painting from which she came (The Black Orchid #19).
For some reason, Emulex earned the interest of super-villain the Painted Lady (see Painted Lady). She delighted in placing him in Renaissance paintings of pastoral settings as well as cubist nightmare landscapes. Eventually though, she tired of him and set him free (Super-Villain Showcase #45).
That's pretty much it.

I just ordered my second commission. Ordered it of a couple characters from Don Perlin. I told him to use poses of his choice so it will be a surprise to me. I know who the characters are but that will be a surprise to everyone else until I post a scan of it :D

Don is a FB friend. It is amazing how many of the comic book equivalent of movie stars are easily accessible and friendly on Facebook. Look him and give him some work Roy. I contacted Sam Glanzman's agent awhile back but was too late. He had already stopped doing commissions. I would like to get some more work from GA guys while they are still able. I think Jay Scott Pike still does them. I would really really really love to have a Murphy Anderson. Does anyone know if he is still available.

On a somewhat darker humor note; I've gotten commissions from Al Plastino, Sheldon Moldoff, Ernie Chan, and Alan Kupperberg, all of whom died not too long after. I think I have the kiss of death :-(

"The Pride of Africa"
Iron Panther is the CEO of Panther Forge Industries, a world leader in robotics design and development. Her company brought in money from the world to her native Kenya, where several design, research, and manufacturing plants employed thousands of workers and helped maintain a successful economy.
Unbeknownst to her people, this successful businesswoman was also a criminal mastermind, using the resources of her company to further her desire for world domination. Although the founder and CEO, she rarely deals directly with the public or press, allowing her associates to be the face of the company.
In this issue:
When she learned of the large deposits of the nigh-indestructible material Impregnium in Kuala Lumpur, she attempted to clandestinely obtain it for use in the manufacture of her robotic weaponry. When the stealth approach failed, she attacked the mining site with her robots. The Silver Agents learned of this and eventually defeated her and her army of robotic panthers. They never learned of her true identity.

But knowing that major black characters were excluded from comics until the late sixties makes the 1964 date seem like a bit of an anachronism (All Negro Comics and Lobo, notwithstanding). Was the alternate history of your comics more progressive than the actual history we had?

Well, that's the idea. Maybe Standard had _actual_ people of color working there? I actually figured the writer was some white dude married to a black woman. Black Panther first appeared in 1966, so it's only two years earlier. Maybe the civil rights movement inspired someone.
I also set Optima (the brown woman in blue and white) having her first appearance in 1974, _and_ becoming leader of the Sentinels. When reality doesn't live up to what you want, make it what you want.

I've been taking a new comic-making class for a few months. This one is structured like a "senior project" where I get to design my own final result. Anyway, I've been using the class to develop the public domain heroes concept that I've been toying with for a while, while at the same time working on some very specific technique things.

Don't mean to sound negative, or nit picking, but…
I assume this is set during World War 2. If so, the haircuts on all the soldiers probably need work to be regulation. This is especially true for the Private in the center and the General. That is unless they are on some very isolated post with no barber available. I know from personal experience that there is always some "Frank Burns" type around who believes a proper haircut is the only road to victory.
By "regulation" I do not mean "white walls" on the sides as a lot of U.S. troops chose today.

Gerry Turnbull brings color and cover treatment to this piece by Ernie Chan, which I left sitting for waaaay too long.
Ernie was king of the DC comics covers during the 1970s, so it would have been cool if he'd done some covers for "Standard Comics", too. Now, he has.

Really great stuff. I have some pencil art from Rock Baker that will be appearing in our Dell revival title All-New Popular Comics so I can not show it until after publication. It is a three page story written by me. Then it was inked by Jeff Austin. BEAUTIFUL I recommend that team highly. I will be getting the cover from Steven Butler.
