Title: Loftypilot uploads
Post by: loftypilot on March 30, 2010, 02:18:28 PM: I just couldn't wait to get started. 8) Right off the old scanner today and in my folder for uploading, Baffling Mysteries 09 from ACE Pub, July 1952 issue. As you'll find out it was an oldie and moldie ...but a fairly easy scan to do.

I've Upgraded the existing fiche/paper Startling #1 with rangerhouse's covers.
And I've uploaded a proper #2 with covers confirmed from the fiche renaming RH+Lofty's scans.

So an all paper scan of Startling #1 is still on the Wanted List gang.

It looks like one just showed up on eBay. Bid ends Aug. 6th. At this moment, it's up around $135. I may keep my eye on it.

(Well, there's been a ~$400 copy on eBay for a while, but the seller sounds kinda... ranty. He scares me a little.)

One of the features in the book is "Sally the Sleuth." Does anyone know if there is any connection between Trojan and Conde Nast's "Spicy Mysteries" which once featured a character of the same name in a continuing comics feature?

Much of the Wally Wood material that appears in Western Crime Busters first appeared in the pulps. For a real in-depth discussion of this, see Illustration Magazine #35 - the article on Joseph Szokoli.

Thanks, Jim. I knew it could have been coincidence but I thought it would be worth asking about. I know I've read somewhere that Conde Nast published all of the "Spicy" pulps, but that was in a tome about the Pulps which had a high ratio of reprinted illustrations to a low ratio of text which I read around thirty years in the main library at the University of Wyoming. They had other book on comics history which were riddled with errors so I'm not shocked that the information was flawed. Not to find out the truth about both things.

That was a multi person job with it being a JVJ book. I'd have to look at the book list JVJ gave us to see if there are more issues of this series. There are a few more posted up here for your information: http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?cid=402 then scroll down to see them.
