Title: EXPLAIN YOUR AVATAR!!!
Post by: bminor on March 13, 2011, 07:40:11 PM
I have been staring at everybodys avatar on this site for some time now and had an idle thought.
What decision went into picking/choosing the avatar that you have?
Mine is pretty simple. I did some portraits of everyone a few years ago, all wearing the same black turtle neck, against a black background.
I was inspired by the cover of the "Meet the Beatles" album from way, way back in the day.
I am contemplating my next comic book aquisition....
Hmm... perhaps a Matt Baker Phantom Lady, or a Mac Raboy Captain Marvel Junior...
(I always go for the good artist in making an acquisition)

I like to change my avatar. I have a jungle man swinging at GAC. My last one here was THE MOTH. I like obscure characters so no telling who I might use next. It is about time to switch GAC.

My avatar is Mr. Snard from the "Crime at No. 9" funny animal comics printed by Fox. And, no, he is NOT the inspiration for my nickname; it's a coincidence. My nickname was chosen years before I discovered that there was a funny animal character with this name. Honest!

I drew mine, based on a child's wash-cloth puppet thing I picked up as a joke. I'm not sure if the original is a bear, I say it's a monkey.

All of the Fox Phantom Lady books have been scanned B. so I'd go with Fawcett, Quality or Harvey who rarely let us down and don't get enough attention.  Or Prize!

Years ago I saw my monkey in it's original picture floating on the net and loved him.  He's every where out there.  He's been great for turning into various avatars though I wish I had another angle of the same monkey.

Royg's hand puppet is one of my favourites here on DCM.  :)

It's just what I look like.

Okay, more seriously: I don't know what originally lead me to the brain in a jar.  Possibly, because it's such a fun comic book trope, but I've used it pretty consistently for any forum that's related to comics, superheroes, or stuff like that.

Your's is another good one BC.  Make me think of the not-so-classic sci-fi movies of the 50s.

It's sort of like people who wear their hearts on their sleeves.  Sort of.

I have grown attached to my Stardust SuperWizard pic...I think his spirit of unpredictability and pointlessness has become a rallying cry for me.  I have an animated one over at ComicCollectorLive, but I wasn't sure that the forums would present it properly here.

Mine I just picked because it kind of went along with the site, and no other reason then I thought it looked cool and no one else was using it, (it is '60's art by the way, not Golden).

I believe it is mid 60's Ditko. From his "How to Draw Comics" comic he had made for I believe Charlton.
Does anybody have one of those issues that they would mind parting with? I have always wanted to have one of those!

I periodically shift my icon through scans I have from my very, very, very limited collection of original art.  The Green Lantern drawing I was using was from a nice piece by Sheldon Moldoff of GL, Flash, and Hawkman.  The Spike I have now is from a Sheldon Mayer preliminary drawing for a Sugar & Spike splash page.

Here's the issue I got it from:

(http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/4153/34378.jpg) (http://img840.imageshack.us/i/34378.jpg/)

Fantastic Giants, year 1966, published by Charlton.

I also remember the book your talking about, but I don't remember if it was used in that book.

This thread made me to decide to pick an avatar, and I'm checking to see if uploaded the image correctly. I use an image of Mr. Elixer, who is secretly the Voice, on Facebook so it makes sense to use him here. Mr. Elixer only appeared in six stories in "Feature Comics" in 1940. I like him because, at 150, he was, arguably, the oldest mystery man.

Kid sidekicks and heroes from the Golden Age always seem to get a bit of grief (a few quite deservedly), so I thought I'd start rotating them as my avatar image just to give 'em a little respect. The first one I've used is Yankee Boy from Dynamic Comics #21. Not sure who I'll use next. Maybe Kitten from Catman Comics.

You guys all know so much re. American comics that I wanted to use something non-American.  And as I am dead keen on really obscure heroes, masked mystery men, etc., I picked a really obscure masked man to replace a previous just obscure hero (Ace Hart).  The Phantom Raider appeared in Coloured Slick Fun, published by Gerald G. Swan in Britain, which appeared weekly in the early '50's - as was typical here.
When the avatars disappeared on GAC, I picked the Charlton one from the great list that was supplied there.  Now, though, I'm thinking of using other obscure British and European heroes from time to time.  I fancy Black Whip, Phantom Protector, maybe Ace Hart again because he's so good, Wonderman (no, not that one). Or a few fantastic villains - Kriminal, Sadik, Fantasm.
I really get the point about kid sidekicks.

Title: Re: EXPLAIN YOUR AVATAR!!!
Post by: srca1941 on February 11, 2012, 09:31:41 AM
Well, to explain my avatar, I must first explain my screen name. When I first started out online, my Yahoo account was Steve_Rogers_Captain_America. When I would register accounts elsewhere (to help remember them), I shortened that to "srca" and added 1941, the year of Cap's debut.

As for the avatar, back in 2004, after Marvel released the Masterworks debacle known as Golden Age Marvel Comics vol.1, I was approached to "try out" for doing some restoration work on the Masterworks. They were still trying to use fiche as source material, and sent me scans of several pages from Captain America to see what I could do with it. My avatar is my fiche restoration from page 5 of Captain America Comics #2. I never did get any work, but it helped lead me down the path that resulted in my Computer Graphics degree from Purdue last year, so my avatar both fits my screen name AND has personal meaning for me.

I also use it on the Collected Editions forums at MarvelMasterworks.com, and even have a couple of variations on it. There's my "Christmas Cap:"
(http://images.yuku.com/image/png/a9a26df10364a956e5e829e43cd4f103d30d0ce0_t.jpg)And my "April Fools Day Cap:"

There is a story to mine. I was in the pub and on the next table were a young couple and they had the biggest cameras I have ever seen.

It emerged they were Russian and were on the south coast of England on a photography holiday. Which is a little bit bizarre as it is a few thousand miles return trip (3000+??). I cheekily asked if they'd take my picture and gave them my email address. I thought the chances of ever seeing it as slim-zero. At least 2 months later, when I had completely forgotten about it, the photo appeared in my inbox as a massive high resolution image.

It is now my "officical picture". I cropped and turned to b/w, for my avatar. Sometimes it's a strange random world.

My new avatar is my commissioned work by Frank McLaughlin. 8x10 pen and ink for only $100 total including shipping. I asked for the Judomaster pose from issue 97 with more of his face showing. I also asked that the generic boxer be made the Judomaster villain Acrobat and he used issue 96. I did not ask for a background. Frank gave me one and wisely made it the jungle rather than the boxing ring. Looks great.

My avatar is a penciled drawing I made around 1990, for my main comic book production partner (of 30 years)'s wife, who is a big fan of Goofy (as I am, too).

My "Signature" (drawing) is a drawing I made in 2009 for Donald Duck's 75th Birthday Exhibition in Oslo, Norway.

Yes, Robb's a classy act.
I thought it was time to change my avatar, so now it's an original signed page (front cover) from the French comic Super Boy #345.  Not mine nor my scan, and absolutely nothing to do with Clark Kent. Rather good though, isn't it?
I've been collecting Super Boy and other French heroes, Tenax for example, for a long time and I really enjoy SB, particularly as he uses a rocket belt.
