Title: Historical Photos: Famous Faces
Post by: Yoc on April 03, 2018, 09:26:34 AM
This topic will feature some famous readers and comic creators from over time.
Enjoy!

           1                      2                        3                        4                       5

#1 Here's one of Walt Disney holding his new comic for the masses Mickey Mouse #1 (1931)(David McKay)  A strips reprint title.  You might call this a CLASSIC PHOTO, it's all over the net.  Some show more on the right side.  You can see a nice colourized version of it here on flickr.com. (https://farm2.static.flickr.com/1501/25745679883_ba7b253ca7_b.jpg)

#2 + #3 Next is from Mar. 1940 - actors Gene Autry & Jane Withers reading Whiz Comics #3 (March 1940).  Jane is thrilled to be reading the same book in the next picture.

#4 Not to be left out actor Mickey Rooney is seen here reading Master Comics #3 (June 1940) in a house ad found in [/color]Nickle Comics #2 (May 31, 1940) here (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=13922).  This one is kinda interesting because Mickey's Master 3 differs from the one later sold on the stands!  Take a look at the cover showing on GCD here (https://www.comics.org/issue/824/cover/4/) and note the characters in the circles along the right side of the book.  Then look at Mickey here again and you'll see the differences.  And the back cover of Mickey's Master 3 is different as well.  Heritage Auctions shows the back cover for the book here (https://tinyurl.com/ycgxp22u) if you scroll down on the page.
The exact same picture of Mickey can be seen here in Special Edition Comics #1 (https://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=19970&page=2) but this time he is reading Master Comics #5.  Some dark room trickery here.

Sadly DCM doesn't have a scan of Master Comics #3 or #5 so if you own one PLEASE scan it or let us do it for you.

#5 Is the Heavy Weight Champion Joe Louis (The Brown Bomber) reading Superman #12 (Sep/Oct 1941).  Louis became champ on June 22, 1937 and held the title for a remarkable 11 years – the longest of any heavyweight!  You can read more about Louis at this site (https://theconversation.com/remembering-heavyweight-champion-joe-louis-and-how-society-treats-its-sports-heroes-79536).

See you next time,

Yoc the photo of Bob Hope with the little girl, she has polio, it was a disease very rampant during the '40-'50. My cousin had it, late '50's early '60's they found a cure, so no more iron lung machines. We even had a President that had polio, they would lock his legs when he would   give a speech so he could stand for long periods.
Just thought you might like to know about it.

Hi Gang,
Here's another batch of famous faces to enjoy!

            1                       2                        3                        4                       5

#1 - 1930s-Barb Stanwyck and son
Barbara Stanwyk married funnyman Frank Fay in 1928 when he was successful variety artist and she was an unknown,  They adopted son Dion Anthony Fay, in December, 1932.

Fay was said to be a drunk, anti-Semite, and a wife-beater universally disliked due to his enormous ego.  Stanwyk loved being a mother, but she hated being Fay's wife. She finally divorced him and began a long and bitter custody battle for the boy.

In 1947, she sent Dion to one of the military schools on the West Coast. But he was forever getting into trouble and running away from school. The next thing anyone heard from him was in 1952 when he enlisted in the Army, apparently against Barbara's wishes. Mother and son never saw or spoke to each other again after that day.

This photo was taken by Life during her custody battle in the late 30s.

You can see this photo and many others of them together on this link:

Taylor at home, 703 North Elm Drive, Beverly Hills (Autumn 1941-1950)
After Francis Taylor relocated his uncle’s art gallery to the Beverly Hills Hotel, the Taylors moved into a home at nearby 703 North Elm Drive. Biographer Alexander Walker described it as “A low building in the Spanish style, with pink stucco walls and red roof tiles, it had a huge round-arched window facing the road and a dusty front ‘yard’ with an olive tree in it.” Elizabeth would call North Elm Drive home for a decade, until her marriage to Nicky Hilton.

Title: Re: Historical Photos: Famous Faces

If Elvis was reading the latest issue of B&V it would have been #25. https://www.comics.org/issue/222086/

The fact that the interior of the names are darker than the background would also fit as red shows up darker than blue in b&w. I would have expected the yellow coloring of the Archie's Girls to look a light grey, but they show up as white, which could be possible. It's just a shame we can't see the Archie logo as 25 was the first with the square logo replacing the banner logo.

Sadly the GCD record does not index the back cover of 25.

Edit: On looking at the scanned covers earlier than 25 I noticed that they used to have the issue number between Archie's Girls and the Comics Code, but with 25 they moved the issue number and moved Archie's Girls closer to the Code, so given this photo was taken in early July, 1956, I'm pretty sure it has to be Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica #25.

I suppose this is as good a place as any for this.

Brian Cronin at CBR has an interesting mystery involving a Captain Marvel comic used on the Donna Reed show (https://www.cbr.com/captain-marvel-donna-reed-christmas-mystery/). (You'll have to scroll down to see a screen cap.)

He's stumped and so am I. That is the Captain Marvel typeface used for most issues of Captain Marvel Adventures, but it's not a cover of any published issue. I used the GCD and did a search for all covers (US & foreign) with Captain Marvel and couldn't find anything that matched. So either, it's an unknown oddball (like a cereal giveaway or something), or it's a foreign cover the GCD doesn't have a scan of (although most foreign covers with original art used a different typeface), or it was something the prop guy made up to look like a Captain Marvel cover.

I did consider the art could be from an interior splash page, but there are so many issues to check for that...

Anyone know anything about the Donna Reed Captain Marvel comic?

Hi SuperScrounge,

Yes, "prop guys" did do that sort of thing. Case in point: Circa 1941 Judy Canova starred in a film that could have been the earliest version of The Beverly Hillbillies. For some reason Backwoods Judy moves into an older than dirt falling apart mansion near Wall Street in New York City. The evil bank executive has just dicovered that his brand new skyscraper is encroaching on her property. So he decides to scare her off.

On a dark and stormy night Judy anticipates the coming "ghosts" by reading an issue of the then current pulp magazine The Green Ghost. But not any published issue. Except for the logo, the covers were all black. The Prop Shop strikes again.

One Green Ghost cover is displayed here:

Well, the mystery has been solved (https://www.cbr.com/captain-marvel-donna-reed-good-humor-man/).

For those who don't want to read the article it was a re-used prop created for the movie The Good Humor Man.

You're welcome.

I guess this could be a new category in the photo section, Fake Comics.  ;)

There's the Captain Marvel from The Good Humor Man & Donna Reed Show.

The fake comics from Creepshow, Back To The Future, and Chasing Amy.

I believe an episode of Agent Carter had a fake Kid Colt Outlaw cover.

Number 1 has star Burgess Meredith (who made a lot of great guest appearance in his career IMO) with a big shot of Amazing Fantasy (Marvel) #15 (September 1962), the first appearance of Spiderman!
Number 2 has Meredith and co-star Lou Gilbert talking.  AF15 is there again along with Journey into Mystery (Marvel) #83 [Aug 1962].  Another debut issue this time it's Thor!
Number 3 is Gilbert again talking to star Paul Burke and behind them this time is Dell's Thirteen #4 [Sep 1962] as well as JIM83 again.  A 'Playbill' and something possible called 'Secrets' between them.
Number 4 is a blurry shot that I believe includes Thirteen4 hidden by JIM83, two unknowns, and a Dell Flintstones #6 [Jul-Aug 1962]. Another Thirteen ends the line.

Knowing cover dates are usually three months later than the month on the stands the likely date the show was shot would be June-July 1962.  Oh and a young Alan Alda plays a beat-nick poet in the show.  Fun stuff eh?

#15 - 1964.04-The Munsters
A screen shot from an unknown episode.  The Munsters, Eddie is reading Yogi Bear (Western) #16 (April 1964)

EDIT - Dennis Ray on our Facebook page tells us - "This scene is from “Herman Munster, Shutterbug” (Aired: October 07, 1965), in which Herman accidently snaps a photo of two fleeing bank robbers… who have invaded the Munster residence in order to get the incriminating picture. The family is held hostage by the two robbers (in background) and are ordered to sit on the couch and act natural. So, each of them is seen reading something."

That's it for this batch, hope you liked them,

Apparently there were kits put together to be given out in school, called "Super Kits", and starring guess who of the DC Universe. It even mentions TV commercials featuring Brooke and Superman, but I sure don't remember seeing any of those. I'd love to find one of the kits on ebay to see what it was all about.
