With an ongoing fight, the status of Buck Rogers on whether the character is in public domain or not is being asked with the following article:

It's a long standing mess.  Nobody seems to be saying the comic strip in in the PD, though... just the two original stories.  Which has a lot of the elements that went into the comic, but not all of them.  The main character doesn't even have the nickname "Buck" in the original stories.

It's a mess; and the heirs of the creator are pushing for more than they are entitled to.  But that still isn't that much.
