Startling_Comics_017_(paper+2fiche)_-upgrade.cbz
Startling Comics #17 from a coverless copy
* 300 dpi scans of interior pages
* inner covers from fiche copies
* front and back covers from Heritage Auctions 9.4 copy
-
Now up!
Thanks again AG!
I tried to find paper scans of the inner covers but had no luck. If I did I would have added them to your cbz file before sharing it.
We're quite impressed with your scans so far. Keep up the great work. And happy holidays to you.
:)
-
That is the last of the coverless scans for now. The rest of the coming Nedors will be full scans.
When the CGC census shows only 8 copies of Startling #17 in existence then you take what you can find. As long as story pages are complete it is a big improvement.

Thrilling_Comics_005_(paper)_-upgrade.cbz
Scanned from a complete paper copy.
* Inner covers and internal pages are scanned at 300 dpi with a higher compression ratio than before with no apparent loss of quality
* Front and back covers are from a Heritage Auctions 8.5 copy for better cover quality and colors

Now Up!
Thanks very much AD! I especially enjoy seeing earlier books like this one. :)
Your file sizes have been just fine for DCM. Please don't feel you have to compress your files more to make things easier on our side.
Max cbz file sizes are encouraged to be around 175MB but can go up to 200 if needed. Bigger than that we suggest breaking a book into two parts.
Thanks again and happy holidays!
-
By the way, if you'd like someone to work on fixing the damaged ifc and splash page of your Thrilling #5 feel free to upload your raw scans of those pages as a zip file the site and we can take care of adding the new fixed versions to the existing cbz already on the site.
Stay well,

I checked extensively for any compression artifacts and could not find any. JPG compression typically shows artifacts in high contrast or fine detail areas, such as black title lettering against a yellow background. Due to the nature of the original printing process, the high resolution used and the aging of the source material, these are medium contrast images at best, allowing the great compression ratio.
There is some black ink shadowing in the images which I confirmed to be in the original print using 3.5x magnifiers.
I will continue to check compressed images for any degradation before posting.

Sure, I have already sent the raw scans to the intrepid reconstruction volunteer!

Sounds good!
Thanks again for all your work on these.
Have a great Christmas Day.
:D

Merry Christmas Yoc.

New uploads:
Real Life Comics #20 300 dpi cover to cover paper scan. Covers replaced with 9.6 Heritage Auction scans. Previously unscanned on DCM.
Thrilling Comics #34 300 dpi cover to cover paper scan. Covers replaced with 8.5 Heritage Auction scans. Previously available only as fiche on DCM.
-
Thanks very much AD!
Both are now up. I looked and the Thrilling BC had a different file name and would have appeared out of order. I've fixed the name so it should be fine.
Thanks for all your work on these. Have a happy new year!

Nedor front and back cover upgrades from Heritage Auctions, usually a CGC grade 7.0 or higher. Replacing covers with chunks out, low resolution or fiche. Interior pages are from previously uploaded editions.

Thanks again AD!
All I'd suggest is to just add your new covers in addition to the old file contents, including the original poor covers. Just have the file names as such that your new covers show first followed by the old cover and contents.
Stay well,
-Yoc
-
Sure, no problem to keep the original covers. Plus search for a matching inner back cover to replace fiche or damaged ibcs. I see you did that on one of the Black Terror scans.
-
Yep.
The Worthpoint site sometimes will have listings that include inside pages. If you get real lucky you sometimes find missing pages that way.
All of your latest upgrades are now up on the site minus America's Best Comics 07F. I don't think there's much point in upgrading any fiche scans that way. Our firmest hope is the fiche scans are eventually all replaced with real paper scans.
Thanks again,
-Yoc

America's_Best_Comics_003_(paper)_-new.cbz
Scan of a complete mid-grade copy of America's Best #3. First appearance of Pyroman. Upgrade from fiche only copy on DCM.
Front and back cover scans are from an Epson flat bed scanner. Inner cover and page scans use a CZUR ET24 Pro overhead scanner to avoid damaging the comic. Flat bed scanners put stress on the staple areas, often separating covers, outer or inner wraps as I have learned with some lower grade comic scans.

Thanks AD, it's now up!
:D
And thank-you for adding in your scanning technique details. Very informative.

Thanks AD, you're on a real roll here.
:D :)

As I mentioned over on the page for the issue, I did up a full recreation of the indicia of America's Best Comics #12. It's primarily based on the indicia from srca1941's scan of ABC #21, and aligned with a quadrilaterally corrected version of the fiche as closely as I could: https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipOfBpqkRV23DNyRmy_KKSNLEIhiwWI0fs4_Fwvq (https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipOfBpqkRV23DNyRmy_KKSNLEIhiwWI0fs4_Fwvq)
-
The link is not working. I compared the wording to both AB #11 and AB #13 and then formatted according to the word spacing and line breaks visible in AB #12 fiche version. My indicia version is really close to the original.
-
That's weird. I originally test it in a completely different browser in which I wasn't signed in, but now it's failing. Try this one: https://photos.app.goo.gl/UPkgE7s35EKFFBy69 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/UPkgE7s35EKFFBy69) Your wording was perfect, as far as I can tell, but this just uses exactly the same font style and look by moving around existing elements. And it has a slightly different alignment, since I stretched the fiche to exactly mirror the Happy #7 scan, and that moves exactly where the indicia characters end up by a little.

- Comic scan description: CZUR ET24 Pro Overhead Scanner 320 dpi paper scan from a complete copy. Covers upgraded from HA.
I've worked on getting the lighting more consistent with the CZUR ET24 Pro Overhead Scanner. No color corrections were needed here, just some black & white level adjustments.
-
Thanks very much AD!
Very sorry for the delay getting this up, real life got in the way here.
Nice job!
