tilliban and the German collectors uploads
« on: July 22, 2011, 09:30:30 AM »
Hey gang,
Let's all welcome DCM German member Tilliban's First Scan - a wonderfully gory Canadian precode horror comic -
Journey Into Fear 020!

Tillian uploaded it twice, the first a MASSIVE 300dpi version that is almost too big for one file on DCM but wow it looks Nice!
The second version a much smaller 19mb one for those on a bandwidth budget.  ;)

Thanks T and I hope we get to see more!

Dear DCM-Gang!
Let me say that I am a big admirer of your fine work.
Being from Germany and living in Cologne the DCM is the MAIN source for us europeans to ever lay an eye upon those comic books.
My hobby are precode horror comic books - and I run my own (german!) website about them:
http://fifties-horror.de/
 >:D
In my opinion every owner of old comic books should donate scans to the DCM.
I'm specializing now in hunting down unscanned issues.
Be prepared to see some more next month - BAFFLING / BEYOND / SPOOK / HAND OF FATE / WEB OF EVIL aaaand JOURNEY INTO FEAR #21.
I know how to tease.

Thank you for the scans, Tilliban, and looking forward to more.

Not every owner of old books is able or willing to scan them, but for every new one like you who we find that is the collection grows.  So thanks again.

Welcome aboard T, and thank you again for the ones you've given so far.
I am and I'm sure others are looking forward to your next scan.

Yep, T knows how to tease for sure!
That list has me drooling here.  ;)

Welcome T and we certainly agree with your opinions on scanning.
Without those like you - most of our collection here would be lost forever.

The way I tease....

It's not like I would tease you on evil purpose.
But I'll be off to summer holidays to Spain tomorrow.
Furthermore I do not own a scanner!
Shame.
I have to ask a friend of mine to share his office for a few hours. Hope to work some sessions in mid-August.
Then I have to rework the scans with a MICROSOFT OFFICE PICTURE MANAGER (yuck!) software.
No PHOTOSHOP for me, o no.
That's why I can only choose file sizes of 400 K or 4.000 K per page.
I'll settle for the small size - they come out nicely in your (by the way) FANTASTIC "Preview"-Viewer.
How'd'you do that?!
Did you programm the thing or is it some readymade feature everyone could get?

Just gettin' the facts, ma'm...

See you next month!

Darn shame you have to rely on that software T.  Oh well...
BTW - you might consider scanning at the larger size and resaving them smaller using free software like the one I recommend - IRFANVIEW.  http://www.irfanview.com/
You can set it up to resave a file at a smaller size under advance settings and it will do batches of scans if you have them all in a single folder.  Just remember to do a backup of all your original jpgs first so you can try different settings and not worry about losing your originals.  Also - it's never a good idea to resave a jpg more than once.  I suggest do some tests, figure out your settings and then apply them to your files so you resize and save each only once.  If you'd like some more pointers you know my email address.
Doing this you could have your larger original scans saved for possible future use and still share a smaller version here in DCM.
Just a suggestion - your current scans are fine for viewing but it sounded like your software was limiting you more than you wanted or needed to have.

Thanks again and have fun on your holidays!

Tilliban - I have a spare (legal) copy of Photoshop Elements that came with one of my scanners. Would you like to have it? I think it's version 6 or 7. Not real modern, but it is still an excellent program and it's free...  I'd be happy to drop it into the mail if you send me a Personal Message with your address. I'll steal a few bucks from the JVJ Postage fund.

or you can just email me at jim@bpib.com

About that postage fund...
« Reply #11 on: August 10, 2011, 02:12:54 PM »
Jim, I am truly moved by your offer.
Why not exhaust that ol' DCM postage fund and send me one of those "scanning machines" you Americans claim to have invented.
(won't sell them to the Russkis, I promise)
Joking, of course. Been reading too much 50s comic books.
Golden Age indeed.
Yeah, I'm back from southern Europe and will try YOCs method first.
So hopefully we'll see another horror upload around the weekend.
I'll keep you posted.

PS Elements will make your life so much easier, Tilliban,
It's really no great effort or expense to send you the copy. I send stuff all over the world, so it's pretty much a part of my basic skill set. Send me your address by PM and I'll actually be HAPPY that someone is using the software instead of it gathering dust in my office.

Takes to it like a duck to water...
« Reply #14 on: August 18, 2011, 05:20:13 AM »
Dear Jim,
fabulous news: your PHOTSHOP ELEMENTS arrived - and I took to 'em like that duck to putrid water from the 1950s.
Used it for my new upload:

BAFFLING MYSTERIES #5

Sad to say, this book contains no real highlights, except maybe for this delightful one-pager called "Baffling Mysteries" (page 24).
In this comical ditty two pranksters disguise themselves in ridiculous fashion with bed-linens to scare a ferryman.
They jump up and scream: "We are Death!"
SAY:::: WHAT???
Instead of falling on his butt laughing, the ferryman carries them off to Hades.
Maybe the right thing to do...

So all the best from Germany (where this story ist supposed to take place).
On Halloween. There is no Halloween in Germany, but who am I to correct fun literature like that?
