Title: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: bminor on July 12, 2012, 07:34:38 AM
I am starting a new game here at DCM.
I ran across this type of game somewhere on the net a few years back and I just loved it!
What you will be trying to do is this. Name the comic book from the clues that I will be posting every few days.
There are two different type of clues: Visual and word clues.
A small segment of the cover of the comic will be posted along with a word hint. (It will always be a cover, no interior pages)
The comic will always be one that is on DCM.
O.K. Here we go! ( I hope the scan uploads!!)

Published after 1945...

So would it be alright to ask questions like "In what genre would be book usually be placed?," or would things like that usually be part of the clues?
Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: bminor on July 12, 2012, 08:10:25 PM
You can ask questions if you want to. But clues as to the genre will be a clue.
This particular series was one of the really good ones in it's genre....
I will give another clue tomorrow...

Not Simon and Kirby correct?

Prize's Black Magic #1, by Kirby (no Simon credit per GCD, but JVJ would know better)
Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!

Which is why I could not find it. I did a Simon and Kirby search on GCD and this issue did not show up

Builderboy is correct!

I always thought that Simon and Kirby together did this book...
Sorry!

Matt Baker.

Not a clue as to the comic.  Possibly one of the many, many romance comics he did for St. John.

This is probably the last comic work of the cover artist, and one of the first times he actually SIGNS (well, initials, actually) his work in a comic book.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/mp5.gif)And narf certainly has called this one. Love the Howie Post, narf, but it's the cover and first story that make this a treasure for me.

It's pretty obvious we're the only two, Narf.
The book is Slapstick #1:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/mp6.jpg)and the cover artist is Munson Paddock, who also does the first story in the book, a one-off character named Firetop! Do check it out, folks.

The cover gives you an idea how cool an artist he was. It is too bad he did not do more comic work. The fact that I could get it from Jim's first little picture lets you know how much I love this cover.

I believe John has not told quite the truth as piece one and two ARE contiguous

(http://comicbookplus.com/images/temp/NameComic.jpg)They have just be resized at different ratios ... here I have put them together the other bit I believe fits at the top following the blade. But fat lot of help that is and it doesn't seem to make sense. I even tried rotating it :( And I can't figure out what is happening behind the head and arm and whether the yellow on the left fits with the yellow of the "dress"

I looked through Indians and all the Western romance I could find and drew a blank. I want the third piece to be part of a Senoritas dress ... but hey ho. This is a thread I wish I had not started reading :)

How about something from a particular artist now...

It was MEANT to be a toughy, b,
Since Mark won this round, we'll see what he comes up with. Next time it's my turn to list one, I'll see if I can abide by choosing an artist. Trouble is, my taste in "artists" is, in general, more widely inclusive than the average fan.

Get going Mark, give us something good and hard.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

ps. I will be unavailable from about noon on Sunday to about 3pm on Tuesday.

pps. I notice that my Total time logged in to DCM is approaching 5 (count 'em FIVE) days. Yikes!

O Ok .. I won!! That's a turn up for the books. Amazing!!!

I'll have to have a think, and as my comic book knowledge is zero minus one it will take a day or so to get the right one.

Monday I will start the new challenge ...

Take your time getting one together, Mark. I know you're busy over at CB+.
But while we're waiting, here's a new one:

Congratulations, B,
Are you going to share the answer? Or tease the rest of the group? You could add your own little shot from the cover to add to the fun.

I think a ghostly ghoul appearing out of a swamp. The Beyond, Forbidden Worlds or summat like that.

BTW sorry Jim I had one ready, but thought I might be gatecrashing and I then got distracted.

Mine is fiendish as hell and will be next. All set up and it will be a real challenge for you :)

We can have as many going as we like, Mark,
Fiendish is good. Bminor's is pretty fiendish. i.e. WHY is the hand in black and white? I was thinking a Spirit Section? Give us yours while we're waiting for an update on the "hand". Heck, doesn't EVERYONE multitask these days?

You fellows must excuse me.
I had a art fair to do Saturday, from dawn to dusk.
Yesterday I spent wrestling a door into a outside wall! (still working on that)

Continuing:

Clue #2:  Kirby is a good guess, but not quite right. One of the big guys though.

Good idea Snard. I am really surprised that I have gotten 3 of these. I am not a visual person so the other clues have to jump out. The first by Jim I recognized as one of my favorites. The second clue/Clue got me going and then the Charlton printing for the third. I have no idea on Marks except it looks like a romance

Does Dr. Cosneck know that you're throwing his name around so casually?
For the record:
I got it in THREE with ZERO context (decade, genre, anything other than a partial face, etc.) hints
AND at least people have HEARD of the comics I pick.

Interesting choice, but obscurity isn't all that much fun.

BRAVO!!

But there were hints there! "teach you a lesson" "grappling" and funny enough the next one was going to be "see a Dr." plus I was going to throw some other words in (blimey "throw" I still can't stop it).

That was VERY impressive in fact majorly so. I think it's a cool little series and you said throw you a toughy. Also, I love the obscure stuff.
So after I get your next one, which I WILL DO,  I will make it even more obscure or maybe just give you a Crack Western that you'll get in one.

Regards and YEP you won (this time)

Hopefully you'll get a bang out of this one

This is just a little too broad for me to get a handle on, cw. Can I get a genre, an era, something to narrow it down a hair?

It's from the 1940s

(http://cooperway4.zoomshare.com/files/ntc/ntc-1b.jpg)Ha Ha - you'll never get this one (maybe)

(more hints to follow, remember I'm new at this)

Okay, the year is 1947 (in what is sometimes referred to as the Atomic Age)

Well for those of you without a magic lamp to help, this was going to be the next hint (like the second hint didn't totally blow it):

Aww, don't look so shocked to find out it's a funny animal comic

sorry to have been away, but I caught a bug on Nuit Blanche (or else it was the 45 year old Bourgogne) and I've been resting for some days now. Here's a "gimme". 1950s.

Jim,

No idea on the first clue

Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!

That rates another "HA HA", Mark,
Would that it had been that simple. I HATE it when I'm sick here. There's all of PARIS out the window and I'm achy and weak. Today I'm well and I need to seek out another bottle of that 1967 Corton Bressandes, if it's still available. One bottle of red, one white among 5 adults isn't going to make anybody tipsy, let alone dole out a hangover.

Hint #2:

Only teasing! Hope you still feeling better

I now have a Hemingway like vision of you. In a Parisian garret probably with a pain (bread I mean) and cheese, standing writing at your desk. Before you head out with your last few centimes to sit outside your local bar with an absinthe (beret obligatory).

Clue #2 I think there maybe treasure involved

Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: JVJ (RIP) on October 11, 2012, 08:23:20 AM
I knew you were teasing, Mark,
Keep looking for this one. It's almost "famous".

As for Paris, nothing at all like Hemingway (despite Mr. Kinstler's flattering portrait). We have a lovely apartment on the 1er etage of an 1895 building in the 17th arrondissement. Not a bit like a garret. Not posh, but very comfortable - Tiliban slept in the 2nd bedroom when he was here. We enjoy good food, la vie Parisenne, and I wasn't kidding about the 45-year-old wine - our great weakness (after the cuisine). So, yeah, think of me with the baguette, la fromage, la pate, and really, really, really good wine.

A not-so-helpful hint: there's water involved.

This is sounding Scott Fitzgerald rather than Hemingway. I am a philistine when it comes to wine .. so I just stick to beer
And to be honest the hint was pretty useless seeing as the first picture had water in it! Hmmmmm .... I wonder
Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: JVJ (RIP) on October 12, 2012, 03:21:14 AM
Firzgerald is a tad too sophisticated for us. We're just folks (lucky, hard-working folks), but just folks. The last clue was more meaningful than you might imagine, but in a subtle way. Hmmmm, indeed.

Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!

Just got back into this, Mark,
and, though it's maddeningly familiar, I've NO idea. The falling (?) figure's face looks like it was drawn by Ralph Mayo, and this seems to be some jungle heroine book, but my brain is drawing (ha ha) a complete blank. Sounds like Narf already knows the answer. Why not tell us, Jim? This is supposed to be an open game, isn't it?

Maybe something will gel with another clue, but I doubt it. Either I know these things or I don't.

I am starting a new game here at DCM.
A small segment of the cover of the comic will be posted along with a word hint. (It will always be a cover, no interior pages)
The comic will always be one that is on DCM.

I'm just double-checking to make sure that this is on DCM?

Okay, I get that it's Capt. Easy and (I suppose) Wash Tubbs, but I have never collected nor paid much attention to strip reprint comics. My personal "definition" of comic books doesn't really include newspaper strips. So even knowing all of this, I still couldn't tell you where the cover appeared. Brian, Jim, SOMEBODY out there should know or has the game devolved to just some individual challenges between you and me. So now you know, pick a strip reprint title and I'm dead in the water.

Peace, Jim (|:{>
Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!

http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=16389 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=16389)

Lol ... but Jim you got it! ... but you didn't see my clues ... "make it easy for you" "find this one easy", "not too difficult" "strip" "soldier" "fortunate" etc ...

OK I promise I'll behave (for now) and next one I do, I'll choose a "proper" "non-obscure" title ... but somehow making sure you don't get it in one is the problem.

Regards,
Mark
Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: JVJ (RIP) on October 17, 2012, 07:20:03 AM
In retrospect, Mark,
yes. What was cloudy became clear. But you have to understand that I'm an art kind of guy. I actually told myself with the first clue that it was a Standard book. Seriously. That face was pure Ralph Mayo and that's where he was when that kind of cover was being done. But, as I said, I never once thought of a strip reprint book. My blind spot, sad to say.

Good luck with my #10.

Peace, Jim (|:{>
Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!

Jim, I got it some time ago that you are an art guy. That is why you built your collection ... plus I had a good sniff around your site :)

I actually chose the comic, as if you look at the other two in the section I believe they are in a different hand and it looked like rather a nice piece of art, in a different league from them and was not signed (honestly I really did)

I cannot find this one, but I know I have seen it. I think Red saboteurs and spy genre. Maybe a named crime buster, but I go for ships about to be blown up.

Back from Playboy life. It’s a nice stylish bar where one can smoke Cuban cigars!
In a cabinet one of Hugh’s pyjamas is on display – and one pair of his slippers, houseshoes or what (of a frightening size!).
And young women actually do serve drinks in "bunny" outfits. Is this degrading to women?
Of course it is.
But here in Cologne it’s carnival/mardi gras all year round, so we don’t pay that much attention to costumed people.
It’s all a joke really and no one is ogling.

Speaking of ogling and degrading to women:
How about our mystery cover?
Give you one last verbal clue: It IS a horror comic book.
But naming the company would give it away quite quickly.
So one last picture will follow in eight hours – set your watches, gentlemen.

Here's one to while away the time, though it's probably best that I don't give too many clues. I will acknowledge that it's 1940s.

Just to make things perfectly clear, and to announce that I'm back in Palo Alto, the answer to the previous quiz was Standard's It Really Happened #11. http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=5085 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=5085)

It's Mark's turn. Or, cooperway's, if he's now up to it.

I wish I knew the answer to this one, Mark. Not yet. I get a kind of Bob Powell, 1950, ME western vibe from it, but that doesn't seem to help at all - so it's probably wrong. Can you narrow down the era for us?

Second clue (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game2.png)and time frame is Space Age ... As for yours Jim I see a cover with an oversized animal on it (just cant find it)
Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: JVJ (RIP) on November 04, 2012, 02:29:04 PM
No "oversized animal" on MY cover, Mark. Just regular ones.

Any chance that if you're going to show such a tiny section of the cover that you could actually make it large enough to be seen? Not only are you being rather stingy with the content, which is certainly your prerogative, but you seem to deliberately make the images too small for these old eyes. The idea of the game should be for us to name the comic based on seeing pieces of the cover. The use of a magnifying glass shouldn't be a necessity. A few more pixels, please?

http://www.comics.org/issue/251405/cover/4/ (http://www.comics.org/issue/251405/cover/4/)

For those who HAVEN'T solved the mystery, I chose Picture Parade #1, one of the truly bizarre covers in the history of comics! What WERE the artist and the editor thinking of? Let's do a sentimental picture of a boy and his dog and then let's get ready to turn them to bone and ash. Yeah, that'll sell this new comic.

Is it obscure? To some, yeah. Published by Gilberton (Classics Illustrated), so it's not THAT far off the mainstream.

I'm still working on yours, Mark. Haven't much time right now.

Good one. Popular title and cover. Lots of variety in the image. Just a little pat on the back for me for recognizing Powell from the first little clip from the cover.

I think you're still up from your previous wins. I've got to work this week, so I'll be monitoring, but probably not as involved.

No clue, Mark,
I see the artist as Pen Shumaker, which implies an Archie connection, but beyond that, I'm stumped. It appears to be either Romance or Crime and circa 1949-1950. My best guess.

Get well soon, Jim!
I've been under the weather myself this week. Still am.
And begging for more clues.

Ok I hope you both feel better soon. Maybe a good couple of clues may help. Well here are a concussed tiger and the eye of a girl. Maybe they'll help in spotting the art work.

Comic 1

Is there any reason why the image has to be so small, narf?
It's possible to let us SEE the portion of the cover you're showing! Showing a small portion and showing a tiny image are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. I simply can't play if we're going to make the pictures that tiny. Sorry.

Well it is actually Tops Comics 2003 featuring the Jack of Spades. I gave my cheezy clues about not being heartless and the company not being at the top. It looks like Mark picked up on the clues. YES it is one of my favorites. Wouldn't the Jack of Spades on the cover make a great statue for BlazingSkull to make. Probably much to obscure though.

Quick find Jim. Do you have a Mark Waid cover mind?
Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: JVJ (RIP) on December 01, 2012, 08:38:53 PM
Not sure what a "Mark Waid cover mind" is, Jim,
but I assure you that I do NOT have one. When I looked at that image, what I "saw" was a) an old comic style [pre-1940] and b) a Centaur-ish "feel" to the pose and content.

Given the two, it didn't take long to find it. I can usually include or eliminate large swathes of comics at a "glance" - just from what I own and what I've seen. I don't have an image of the cover, just the parameters of the style and content.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: narfstar on December 02, 2012, 08:03:28 AM
I believe it is Mark Waid that if you give him the cover details from any DC comic he can tell you the issue? He may be able to that with more than DC but it was at the DC panel at Heroes Con that he performed.
Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: JVJ (RIP) on December 02, 2012, 09:06:32 AM
Narf, I do know have such a mind. Period.

Gad, Mark, if there's a way to cheat at this game, I NEED to know it.

I think I can just narrow down the time and the company on a lot of images better than most. Then I look through those covers on GCD. Is that cheating? Or are we getting sour grapes served to us? Mark, I'm older and I own more comics than you. And I've internalized them in a completely different way than you. You'll beat me every time with obscure titles, but I see my side of the game as giving you as much information as I can of abstract portions of covers from less common issues of more mainstream titles: Treasure Comics, Air Fighters, Crime Fighting Detective, Soldiers of Fortune, White Indian, etc. I don't believe that these are obscure, but YMMV.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

Jim,

I was teasing you (yet again) and I am sorry, but sometimes it is a bit too tempting to light your touch paper. And YES I REALLY do cheat.

I know nothing about comics, I think I bought one when I was a kid 'cos it had a free ring that squirted water. Narf, Paw and Joe are the major comic brains behind CB+.

I just see the huge amount of public domain material that I can play with to make a site. PLUS it is VERY important to archive the books both from social and artistic aspects. I take this VERY seriously and it is a BIG responsibility.

But, it is also just too much fun!!

Regards,
Mark

Regards,

I knew you were teasing, Mark. I was giving Narf a serious answer when he was inquiring about my approach. Were you teasing about cheating, too? If I knew how, I'd definitely cheat, too. But I can't figure out a way to do it. What's the secret?

You seem to have a strange interpretation of my responses. "Light your touch paper" implies a hell of a lot more investment than I have in all this.

It's obvious that you need a tad more help, Narf,

I had never heard of John Henry (I have read up on him now) I think Deep Blue v Kasparov would be a better analogy especially as Kasparov lived to fight another day!

One of my favorite Johnny Cash songs, for 1963, and you're making me feel real old here, Mark. I bought that album, Blood, Sweat and Tears, NEW from the Columbia Record Club and I still have it! And you'd not even heard of "John Henry". Sigh... I agree that "Deep Blue v Kasparov" is a better analogy, but in order for me to have used it, I would have had to look up [IBM computer chess human contest] on Google to even find out what to say. Double sigh.

Okay, use your "Deep Blue" wiles on this second clue:

Well the name John Henry rang a bell, but to me I thought it was a name for a male appendage. (nicely put Mark!)

Anyway in a very random and totally unrelated defense I have heard of Herb Caen and have a signed letter above my desk.

Right on with the next one I hope I haven't already done this! Also as I am feeling generous I'll give a clue it is not a horror title

Firstly I remember now it's "John Thomas" that I was thinking about as a name that is used for male bits.

Mind you there are so many that vary from country to county I am sure you could write a book about them.

Well, as it is just you and your brain I thought I'd put this one up and also let you know it is not a jungle comic. But hang on! You are using a computer to do this I wonder which one? Are you an Apple guy?

What are you using to capture the pics? I can take a DCM cover and view at the width of my screen and it stays pretty sharp. Then I can do a screen capture and THAT stays pretty sharp. Like this:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-19-2b.jpg)which is probably three times the same-size view of the comic. I am curious as to what approach you are taking that blurs the images so much. Maybe a different technique might help...?

I hope that "made you feel bad" is some sort of hint, Mark,
as I have no intention of doing that (or any clue of how to go about it). Actually, I'm simply not that interested or knowledgeable about comics with bad art, so if you want to beat me at this game, just keep throwing up poorly drawn work like this and it'll go right by me every time.

And it's also pretty obvious that your cheat engine is superior to all the rest of us combined. Sort of takes the fun out of it.

There have been NO verbal clues SO FAR in his one. I actually chose the cover 'cos I thought it was a bit quirky.  And do you know what I think I have done a "Captain Easy" on you again. Purely by accident. I really ought to review my choices.

I've looked again a bit, Mark,
and I can't see it as an Ace title, nor
Ace
Ajax
ACG
Avon
Better
if it's Canadian, I say "eh"
Centaur
Charlton
Chesler
Columbia
Comic Media
Cupples and Leon
Dell
D.S.
Eastern
Fawcett
Fox
if it's a Government Pamphlet, I say "eh, too"
Harvey
Hillman
Holyoke
I.W.
Key
Lev Gleason
ME
MLJ
Orbit
Parents
Quality
Spark
Star
Sterling
St. John
Story
Toby
Trojan
Youthful
Ziff Davis
nor Camera, Catholic, Consolidated, Crown, Cross, Croydon, Dearfield, Don Fortune, Great, Green, Lafayette, Nationwide, Premier, Leffingwell, Stanhall nor Superior.
In short, it doesn't seem to be any comic with which I'm familiar and, judging from the lack of anybody else participating, it's not something they've seen or are interested in either. Maybe it's just too tricky for me, but corner cases win the game but seem to lose the audience.

Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: Mark Warner on December 12, 2012, 01:22:03 AM
Well here is a nice big chunk. And in my defense I don't choose covers by how difficult they are. I go for things that look interesting. And in fact I have had to disregard a few I wanted to do as they were a bit off the beaten track.

Anyway as it happens, although the art may not be good, this is actually of a minor historical interest. A very early comic (second??) from an embryo company that certainly did come to employ great comic book artists. So actually if I had reviewed the comic, I probably would still have chosen it or issue #1 of the series for that reason. (But we are on "Captain Easy" territory which I also did not realize)

Lots of clues sprinkled!

Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!

I am not in the least bit mad or grumpy, Mark,
simply supremely disinterested and totally baffled by the cover, hints and all. I'm not about to invest effort and time into a game where I don't even care IF I know the answer. As I said once before, you credit me with WAY too much emotional involvement in these things. Right now my involvement is in re-caulking our shower room, installing a medicine cabinet in my bathroom (my Rx bottles have gotten out of hand), researching some old Timely comics with Hames Ware, working on the next issue of ImageS, helping John Benson proof a transcription of a decades-old interview with George Evans, and I just finished writing an introduction for a Phantom Lady reprint volume and installing a new electric garage door opener. And Karen just brought in the Christmas tree. Playing what's this obscure comic, when I've run through all the companies I know, is simply pretty low on the to do list.

And just for the real, official record, I GIVE UP. You can tell me/us and we can go on. You can even do the next one, too. Just that this one is going nowhere.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

Blimey, you are busy that is a lot of multitasking going on there a very eclectic mix of chores. My mind is really only designed for one major task at a time. I have nowhere else to look, Narf. I don't know. It's Mastroserio, I've always been pretty certain of that. Which places it between 1951 and 1959, since we don't go past '59 - and I would place it more in the later '50s based on how slick he's gotten. I thought it might be Charlton, but I think I've checked everywhere and besides the printing seems too sophisticated (the blue tint behind the parallel shading lines) to be what I remember. So, you got me. I don't know what company it might be and I have no intention of checking every western cover on DCM. Not enough hours in the day my friend.

Good job. No idea.

Well, more power to Charlton for the printing, Narf,
and I guess my eyes have simply failed me. I've gone through as many Charltons as I am going to, so unless someone else is looking for it, I concede defeat. Put me out of my misery and try another one. Thanks.

Using pen and paper I deduce it to be http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=15248 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=15248) Outlaws Of The West #16

New quiz starts with a pretty lady to brighten up our day

You were right Jim it was Mastroserio and if it had picked your memory, I mentioned some time ago that I would sometimes mistake Molno and Mastroserio because they both do very similar noses. I through in an inker clue with PAT yourself on the back MAStered and SULly. I thought it was rather clever.

Here's one with very little planning involved:

(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-21-1.jpg)Now back to the laundry and the shower and the grout and the tub. And folding clothes. Someone's coming in to replace FIVE windows on Thursday and I have to have everything both cleaned and accessible. I slept 9½ hours last night. I'm exhausted and still more to do.

I've been following along since the first one and have been mighty frustrated so many look familiar but other than one of them I've been stumped and just not telling everyone repeatedly.

I can see how Mark's 'cheat' would work but I don't think of it as that - just good detective work.

If you guys are having fun I hope you'll continue.

It's the missile silo from Planet of the Apes!

...no?

That is just teasing, Narf!
 ::)
But I'm confused now.
What about Jim's running feet? (or better: a foot) - that reminds me of horror.
But need one more clue.

Is your silo, Narf, the same cover as that searchlight thing?
Which I can't connect to horror - yet!
Keep me going.

That wold be a prototype happy face used in early Watchmen sketches.
So it's 'Planet of the Watchmen'

...no?

I think Mark already got Jim's.

I am surprised no one has gotten it yet. I checked and the comic is not forbidden here and only on CB+. A long running title from a significant publisher
Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: tilliban on December 19, 2012, 07:23:56 AM
So it's gotta be something CODE-APPROVED (yeccchh!), right?
So I searched books from ACG, but can't still find it!
Arrrgghh.
I am NOT familiar with code-approved books...
Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: JVJ (RIP) on December 19, 2012, 09:50:02 AM
does that mean that the comic is only posted on CB+, Nrarf?
If you recall the rules of the games "A small segment of the cover of the comic will be posted along with a word hint. ... The comic will always be one that is on DCM."

Why is Mark in the naughty chair - and not allowed to solve this mystery?
Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: narfstar on December 20, 2012, 05:00:38 AM
Because Mark has a cheat machine that allows him to get all the answers and not give anyone else a chance.
I can not give you much more of the cover without giving away the name. So if you check my picture in my avatar you can see who one of the bald men is and it was a clue as Bald is credited as the cover artist. I would say there are nearly 34 clues that I have given including exactly what comic it is.

I was really surprised that this took so long. The fun part was trying to come up with clues. Here are all the hints for those who may have missed them.

NOT ALLOWED=Forbidden

Tilliban may be having some difficulty because he is not from the USA= from ACG

nothing in the world=WORLD

not forbidden here and only on CB+. A long running title from a significant publisher=FORBIDDEN+

1954 hope the info from a bald

34 clues= issue 34

Title: Re: Name That Comic Game!!!
Post by: Kracalactaka on May 11, 2016, 12:15:28 PM
well at first I was thrown off because you did not capitalize 'paper', thus putting emphasis on the "paper comic" part which really had me scratching my head, because I was thinking: "In the early '80s what else besides 'paper' would a comic be published on?"

I confess to having to look it up, as my only association of 'Baxter' to comics is the Baxter Building.

I know the answer now (It's not Elektra), but I won't say to let someone else chime in.

I can say That I have one of these though, The Elektra Saga. Found it used, near mint for $5 at a local shop.

Marvel Fanfare Was not printed on Baxter

Really?  Wasn't Fanfare on some kind of special stock?  Perhaps cover stock for the interiors?  I remember the colouring being very rich the entire book like it was on Baxter.

I'm stumped K.  I wasn't a DC fan at this point in time so I'll never guess it.

Well, according to the Grand Comics Database it would the Brazilian comic Perry - Nosso Homem no Espaço #1 in 1975. (Assuming the indexer properly identified the paper, of course.)

1981 is shown as the first year for American comics with Baxter paper, some bubblegum giveaways, publishers Ken Pierce, Marvel & Pacific, but no DC until the end of 1982.

Be funny if it turned out the first American comic using Baxter stock was just a bubblegum giveaway.  ;)
