I'm preparing Whiz 85, 120, 127, 140 & 148 for uploading, almost done. In my cbr every other page is bright and high contrast. The scans are consistent from pg to pg, so I guess in the rar compression process they got goofy. Is there a way to prevent this? They scans are 150dpi jpgs, fwiw.
-
127 looks swell, so I'll just try 85 again.
Edit: re-compressed 85, still alternates good pages with weirdly contrasty/bright ones. 120 is the same. I'll hold these back 'til I figure it out.
-
But seriously, if anyone has experience w/ this issue and can help, that'd be awesome.
-
Hi Wham,
Have you tried using WinZip instead of rar?
How about you upload Wham 127 and an example of a 'bad' one to the FTP and I'll take a look at them for you?
I've never heard of a compression app buggering every other page like yours.

Two possibilities come to mind, but they're both sort of longshots:
First, take one of your bad files and extract everything from the archive. Are they the same files you believe you put in? Like, are they the same size and look the same in a normal viewer?
What software are you using to view the archive? Different systems have different settings. CDisplay, for example, changes the background color based on some sort of guessing game regarding the edges of the image, and severe differences could make the image look much different.
Did you process the images for consistency? Is it possible you're picking up the originals? I know I've scanned material over the years where the scanner did produce results similar to what you describe.
-
I'm viewing w/ CDisplay, the scans are super consistent when viewed in photoshop or the standard windows viewer. I can try winzip, also I'll upload the god vs bad files tonight or tomorrow, I'm away from my machine now.
I'll also play w/ file extraction and see if they've been changed or not. Thanks for the suggestions, more asap.
-
Whamcomics,
What software are you using to edit the images? I use Photoshop, and it has a quirky way of retaining the last compression rating that you used as a default.
When I prepare the cover image, I generally target a slightly higher file size than the interior pages, anywhere from 1.5 to 2 Mb. For interior pages, I try to target 500Kb or less, specially for the 52 and 68-page books, just to keep the final package size small.
My point is, however, I will find that, when editing a book, if I haven't done all the interior pages in succession, my compression settings will not be consistent across files, requiring me to go back and re-compress some.
What Yoc suggested is best: post one of the troublesome books and let somebody take a look. It might be something simple.

I've just uploaded 127 and it's huge! Despite scanning at 150 dpi, it's around 125mb. I'm pretty sure the CMA 150 I added long ago was scanned identically and is a mere 25mb. I obviously have little idea what I'm doing here.
Anyway, 85 is uploading now. Holla w/ tips.
Thanks!
Sandy
-
I have moved from Photoshop CS1 to CS2 since scanning the CMA 150. Fwiw.
-
I have the same problem. It seems to depend on what scanning program you are using. I have been using my samsung and it makes them big
-
Hi Wham,
I just downloaded your Whiz85.
I can see what you mean about some pages being more yellow than others but it's not that Terrible. I've seen a lot worse for sure. Have you got your scanner set for 'auto-colour' on? Turning it off might give you more consistency between scans.
As for the final file size it's because each page is Very Large! 2mb or more. DCM has an upper file limit of 200MB but we really would like a 36pg book below 50mb for sure. Your page dimensions are fine so I'm guessing you are saving your jpgs on Photoshop at the maximum 'quality' level. Try saving them at lower levels (5-7 say) until you can get to around 1mb per page.
I'll hold off adding your uploads to the site until I hear what kind of luck you have.

I just started at the end and posted 148, decidedly smaller. I'll try to reduce some more file sizes tonight.
Thanks!
Sandy

Sounds good WC.
I don't see it on the FTP or waiting on the site though. I'll check again tomorrow.

127, 140 and 148 up. Hopefully properly. I'll work on the other two asap, but It might be next week.
-
Looks better WC!
I've renamed the Download Name to match the others on the site - ie Whiz Comics 127.
I cover that in the Upload tutorial here - http://tinyurl.com/yfrkumk
Not trying to nitpick here as I think you are looking for feedback, but you could have saved each page a bit larger if wanted. Perhaps one more level higher for Quality level when saving with Photoshop. Personally I shoot for between 500-800kb per a page. Each scanner has his own preferences but those are my suggestion. So your Whiz 148 would have been about 28mb instead of the current 10. But they are readable and that's the important thing!
Thank-you Very Much for sticking with it and helping to fill so many holes in our Whiz collection! Thankfully the process becomes second nature once you've done it a few times. Sadly it never is 'exciting' to scan unless you're seriously into it and have a Much faster scanner than my own super slow HP Scanjet 4370!
Take care,
-Yoc
:)
-
I saved 'em at 7 quality this time per your suggestion- I was surprised at how small they ended up. I'll do #s 85 and 120 at 9 or 10 and see how that goes. Again, probably next week, funnybook con to attend over the weekend.
My scanner's A3/11x17, so the scanning's not as arduous as the saturation/rotate/crop/save part.
I'll keep doing this as I can. My Whiz buying priorities: the ones I can't download here!

Hey- Sorry about the delay on fixing those other files! I'm still planning to get to it soon, so 85 and 120 will be uploaded when I can and I have a 106 and 137 now, as well as the missing half-page from 103, so I need to scan those.
I also have a centerfold-less Marvel Family 60 scanned...
-
Ooh my, the Fawcett Collectors must be drooling reading your list S!
Looking forward to them myself.
Take care,
-Yoc

Uploading 85 and 120 now. Hopefully properly named. Still unhappy w/ the quality of 85: my scans look swell, and this time I zipped rather than using rar. Alas. They're readable, at least...
-
Now up!
Thanks for these long needed fills WC.
:)
-
Happy to do it! I'll get to the others as I can.
-
I just scanned 106, 137 and the missing part of 103. I'll crop and tweak and upload soon. Sorry I'm so slow!

Don't worry about it WC, it takes time to do scans and then edit them, I know, been there, done that many times and still doing it. Don't let it get you down.

Now worries at all WC!
Better late than never right?
:)
-
Whiz 137 uploading now. At last!
-
And here comes 106. I'm also uploadin 103- I used the existing cbr, replaced the half pg 10 with a full one, but left the missing back cover alone, b/c mine's a blank back cover Canadian one.
-
Thanks very much WC, keep up the great work!
:)
-
I'll have a copy of Whiz 136 over the next few days! I'll scan and post as time allows.
-
Sounds great WC!
:)
-
Whiz 121 and 136 scanned, just need to crop etc...
-
Will be on the lookout for them WC.

I'm trying to upload 136 but the Captcha image is broken. Can't enter code if I can't read it!

OK will look into it now for you.
-
Have disabled Captcha feature until it is fixed so you can now upload fine.
-
I'm trying to upload 136 but the Captcha image is broken. Can't enter code if I can't read it!
OK ignore it. It only meant to be there for guest's but they can't upload so it will be removed. It doesn't show up as your not a guest so you should be able to ignore the box and just submit your scan.
Will remove it completely tonight hopefully.
-
Tried again got this: "Error: No file uploads of this type are allowed. If you believe this to be in error, please quote the above error and report this to the admin"
-
What type of file was you trying to upload?
CBR?CBZ? Other?
-
cbr.
-
Still getting the error message. I've opened the cbr, works fine, so it's not anything to do with a wonky file.
-
Hi Wham,
Yep, we've got a bug now with uploading CBR files via the web site.
If you rename your file to "xxx.RAR" instead that should work for now.
We will announce when the bug is fixed,
Thanks for letting us know about it.
-Yoc
-
I got the error after trying it as a rar file too. I'll work on cropping/rotating etc 121 soon, then maybe I can upload both at once, post-bug.
-
PS: The new Preview viewer is awesome, and has eliminated the problem I started this thread over. Nice work!!!!!!!
-
Hi WC,
Can you try using a different browser or as a Zip file?
Seems this bug is limited to very few of us. The other admins had no problem uploading a test.cbr file as can I from my parents home but not my own.
I can upload a rar file from both so the mystery thickens.
Note I'm using FireFox with No Script running. I haven't had a chance to try MS Explorer to upload a cbr file yet.
Please let us know how it goes.
-Yoc
-
It should've occurred to me that Chrome was the problem. 136: in the house. Thanks!
-
Now up!
Was it FireFox that wasn't working?
Thanks for sticking with it, scans look great!
:)
-
It's firefox that worked, chrome was the problem. I'm uploading 121 now- it's a little odd because this copy's cut wrong, much narrower at the top than at the bottom. I did what I could with it!
I'm on the lookout for 81 & 114. One of these days I'll find 'em...
-
Another bug we can't explain..... :)
-
I just tried the test.cbr upload using MS Explorer from home and it Worked.
So it must be I have some FireFox addon that is causing trouble.
For now, if someone says a file type wont upload suggest using a different browser as the first alternative.
-Yoc
-
I'm uploading a coverless copy of Whiz 114 as I type. I've included a cover image, but it's pretty lame...
-
Bad cover scan or not it's been approved for downloading consumption for everyone. The world is better because of it.
Thanks Wham.
Geo
-
Thanks WC!
:)
-
I see Whiz 81 has been posted! I was about to bid on one, now I won't. I do have a copy of #59 on the way, I'll scan and upload asap.
-
Sounds fine.
GL WC!
-
Whiz 59: uploaded!
-
Now live!
thanks again WC
;)
-
Glad to help! I'll have a (sadly) sans-centerfold Whiz 152 up tonight. It's missing some filler and a couple of Lance O'Casey pages. CM, GA and Ibis are complete.
-
It is free roaming and out to the public now Wham (Whiz 152). Thanks for your latest upload, it's very much appreciated.
Geo
-
I'll have a Whiz 52 in hand soon!
-
Be on the lookout for it Wham.
Geo
-
Whiz 52 uploading now! Improperly named, can y'all fix that? I'm sleepy.
Also: Is that the last one? Is Whiz done except for a missing page here and there?
-
Thanks very much WC!
Yes, the run is done but there are Many fiche books that need paper scans and several that are missing pages.
I hope these someday can be fixed and/or replaced and we can truly say ALL of Whiz Comics have been scanned c2c!
A big thank-you to all the scanners involved in making this happen!
:D
