Title: The Quill's Remastered Uploads
Post by: The Quill on December 10, 2011, 07:18:48 AM
As per Narfstar's request I have remastered the scan of All For Love comic (v2 03)

Creases from the cover have been removed and where possible the colours have been enhanced throughout.

Enjoy

Mighty Midget Comics Captain Marvel Junior No11

I have remastered two versions of this particular comic.

The first is in a simple Black & White format and have ‘bleached’ the pages from brown to white, but I have added a slight ‘creased’ layer to the images/pages to give the impression of paper rather than just have a one dimensional bland background.

In the coloured version I have once again cleaned all the pages and coloured the whole comic using different styles, which I hope presents a slightly updated version of this publication etc.
Once again I have added a slight ‘creased’ layer to the images/pages to give the impression of paper rather than just have a one dimensional bland background.

I hope you enjoy them

Hi Q,
Could you please number your files starting at the front and reupload?  The covers are appearing at the end of these files.

I'm not sure how to feel about this new twist.  The colouring of b&w or two colour comics.  We're leaving the realm of preservation and entering 'creative licence.'  Technically you could now be copyrighting your new versions if you wanted.

I've moved these two problem files off the site for now incase Q wants to correct them.

Not a problem and uploading now.

With regards to copyright, I took the scan from Public Domain and now return my efforts to the Public Domain for everyone to judge. Good or bad  ;)

Thanks Q.  You've given us a lot of food for thought with your uploads.

Henry does recoloring. I like the idea of colorized being available. Perhaps some of the old Centaurs that are partially black and white.

Narf, perhaps these would be better suited on GAC?
Frankly I'm not comfortable with the idea really.  Cleaning up a scan, perhaps removing mold or merging fiche into missing chunks from a paper page - sure I'm fine with that.  But adding colour where there was none makes me very uneasy.

Essentially the site is here to preserve and share scans of the books.  Some may argue, and have, about the Amount of massaging a scan should get from none to pristine white page whitening - but we've never talked about 'remastering' comics and adding content that never existed before.
As much as I appreciate the work that Quill has done on these I wonder if DCM is really the place for sharing them?  It's almost something I'd expect on www.deviantart.com (http://www.deviantart.com) for example.

The staff are talking about this topic and haven't decided on what to do.  I honestly would rather DCM not be known for their creative sharing and more for saving all but forgotten and usually expensive pieces of comic book history.

It's a sticky question I'm not sure how to handle.   :(

If it is causing a problem please don't upload to your site, and any future submissions will only be to repair books and not to re-invent. :)

Hi Q,
I sure don't want to step on your artistic hopes but it is a bit of a conundrum for us.
I'm waiting to hear back from Narfstar who is an admin on the GAC site.

But yes, I think we're more comfortable with you sticking to repairs for sharing on DCM and I appreciate your understanding on the matter.

No worries.

I can assure you the next effort will be much less of a problem for you and will appeal to quite a few.

Happy new year, fella

Plastic Man No 40

Quality Comics

Front cover has been colour enhanced and page tears along with water stains removed.

With regards to the inside pages I have been less brutal with the ‘bleaching’ and where possible allowed a certain amount of faded ‘yellowing’ to remain to ensure the original colours remain faithful to their true representation.

Water staining on internal pages have been removed and the tears have been repaired on pages 33-34.

Once again all relevant credit goes to the original scanner srca1941

Airboy Comics vol.5 no.7

Hillman Publications

Remastered front cover and removed minor tears along creases.

All pages have enhanced colour and where possible I have retained some of the paper ‘yellowing’ to ensure the richness of the original colour palette.

Original scan credit goes to srca1941

Enjoy

Sorry I could not post on GAC as i can't get the FTP to work  :(

I'm sure if you sent Narrstar a Mediarfire link he could add it to the site for you Quill.  Until they get things better sorted anyways.

I've added your upload.  Could you please be sure to match the other file names so they show in proper order?

Ie I renamed your latest to 'Airboy Comics v05 07 (Remastered)' so it would show in the right place on the site.

Thanks for the upload,
-Yoc
