Title: Please help us identify and solve the occasional glitch.
Post by: aussie500 on March 28, 2010, 06:44:42 AM
If you find any files that have an incorrect file extension, or even any strange file names, let us know the actual name and the name it should have been so we can update it. There might also be occasionally broken links or incomplete uploads which we might need someone to upload again. And as with all large collections of scans there will be missing or damaged pages that we need to note in the comments for the scan so hopefully one day we can get a complete scan.

I don't know the internals as well as Captain DJ and Zog do (and they've been taking a well-deserved break after getting this place into shape), but something in here might be of use:

http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/forum/index.php/topic,1810.0.html

If the site says you're not logged in (I don't think I've seen that before), that could be bad data somewhere.  Best bet would be to log out of the site, clear your web browser's cookies, maybe restart the browser just to make sure there's nothing lingering, then log back in and try again.

Before you do that, though, be sure to check the videos linked in the FAQ above, to make sure you registered and logged in correctly.  I've been dealing with computers longer than I care to admit, and every once in a while, I still overlook little details like that.  (I also spent an hour yelling at some tech support guy, once, because he asked if my cable box was plugged in.  Of course I...oh, hey, it looks like the plug slipped out.  Oops.)

As the FAQ mentions Kay (a link in in my signature below) you must use the Exact same name and pw as you are using here on the forum.  If you can login here you should be fine on the download site.
Try John's suggestions and see if that helps.
You aren't the only one that has this happen btw.  Checking the error log in the admin section one can see people from time to time needing to try to login more than once before they can download.

"HenryPeters" dropped several of his email addresses about a year ago.  I don't feel comfortable posting a valid email address here, but HP's scans are well-loved and quite a few of us probably have any you need.

and BTW anyone here who runs IRC, might drop in on #comicchat irc.irchighway.net where HP hangs out at times.

They download like any other file Larry but CDisplay wont show them.
Any other viewing app likely could but it was easy enough to convert and reupload them to the site as jpgs.
You shouldn't have any problem with the Fixed version now up.

Hi,
I've noticed that the tally totals under the publishers are not accurate.
For example, to give you a simple one, Centaur Comics shows a tally total of 109 and there only seem to be 85 listed under the individual titles. Have some gone AWOL? There are differences under other publishers too and I can give further examples if you need them.
As this is my first post I'd also like to say a big thanks for such a wonderful site and to all the scanners, uploaders and collectors who have allowed their pride and joy to be scanned. This site is a dream come true letting me look at comics I could only dream of ever seeing let alone owning!

There are more than 85 scans in the Centaur section, because there are a lot of unsorted ones at the bottom of the page, below the individual title sections. Were you counting them as well plentycrazy?

Hi Staunton,
Nice to see you in the forum!

I just downloaded your Tom Mix 55 as well as Hopalong_Cassidy_05 which does work fine.  There is one difference in the files.
Mix has a "thumbs.db" file at the start.  I believe if you delete that and reupload the file would be fine.

Note the Mix file works within CDisplay for reading on my PC so you don't HAVE to reupload unless you want to.

EDIT - I just added your other uploads and the files are fine so the AutoCoverThumbnail feature might be buggy on our end.  Just be sure your files are jpgs and no other files are in the folder when you zip them.  ie thumb.db

Thanks for all your posts these days!

Hi,

I've been doing a few 'fixes' by downloading, changing the extension (usually .cbr to .cbz; sometimes the opposite) and re-uploading (and asking to remove the 'bad' file). Would it be easier to just tell you about them here so that you can change the filename directly?
Title: Re: Please help us identify and solve the occasional glitch.
Post by: Yoc on October 20, 2011, 04:00:21 PM
Hi Len,
Very sadly once a file is 'live' on the site we cannot go in and change them.  They are locked in as-is.  We can only continue to fix them they way you describe which sucks but it's a limitation of the free software we and GAC are using.  Perhaps someday CaptDJ can figure out a way to directly edit a file already on the site without needing a complete reupload but until then we will have to depend on the generous work Prime User and now yourself have been doing.  Our thanks to both of you once again.

Don't know if this is the right place to post this. There are two files for Jungle Comics 134. Both have the same cover, but the Ka'anga and Camilla stories are different in each. I can't find any clues in the stories that indicate which is correct.  The cover names Ka'anga in "The Black Avengers of Kaffir Pass"  but neither Ka'anga story makes any reference to this.  Can anyone shed light on this?

The pages are not out of sequence in Mary Marvel 19 (well, technically they are), that is the way the book was printed, I went back and checked the RAW files.

The two pages in question, 16 and 21 are the pages on either side of the centerfold. Apparently Fawcett had the plates wrong and printed the pages backwards. (best guess)

Hi Kevin,
We did some checking and can confirm that the Air Fighters book is complete.  The story does just end with 'What a jerk.'  Funny enough it's 8pgs and the GCD lists it as only 7!
Movielover, the editor of the Mary Marvel 19 has confirmed that yes, two pages were reversed but that it was printed that way.  You can correct them in your file but for historical accuracy I believe we should keep it as-is and just add a note to downloaders to be aware of the problem.

Thanks for bringing these up.  We do want to correct mistakes when they crop up.

This is likely some using a download manager to repeatedly try to download the book while not registered or signed in on the site.  DCM strongly frowns on such hammering of the site.

Warning: rar_open(): Failed to open /home/gac/public_html/downloads/3767816143b48359b43d1b3738ac6ed7.rwd: ERAR_BAD_ARCHIVE in /home/gac/public_html/preview/viewer.php on line 125Can't open CBR file

This is happening because the .cbr file is actually a ZIP formatted file. (I downloaded the file and looked at it with a hex editor)  The upload should have been named .zip or .cbz.

A fixed version is now up, thanks for letting us know it was broken.

For Hopalong Cassidy #65 the cover is only about one third there in the Preview function.

I did not scan beyond the third page. Don't know if there are more problems.

All looks fine to me Erwin.  Both it and 75 are good in Preview.

I keep having trouble downloading Captain Aero issues(big Miss Victory fans). Instead of downloading as zip files they have downloaded as large documents. Am I doing something wrong? I just click the download button.

Have you gotten any other scans to download and work in a reading app?
Please check the FAQ section.  Especially 'How to read DCM files' here - http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/forum/index.php/topic,1808.0.html

If you don't have a reader application installed it might well be your system isn't ready to read them.
If all else fails you can still use the Preview feature and read them online.

I downloaded Simple Comic and now I can read the Captain Aero comics. What a relief!

Thanks to FreddyFly for the new recreation of Jo-Jo comics.

That said, I could not reach either of the covers using the Preview function. I clicked on the Preview button and got the first story page. Two covers showed up in the page icons. I clicked on the first one, but got the first story page again.

I did not download the comic, so do not know if the archive is complete.

Hi Erwin,
Yeah, it seems the Preview thumbnails do not get updated when new pages are added.  We're looking into it.

The link listing all the latest uploads hasn't been working right for me for the last ten days or so:

https://digitalcomicmuseum.com/stats2.php

It tops out at the three Super Duck books back on the 15th.

Any idea what's up, or is it just me?

Just a note to say CaptDJ has found a way for us to update the Preview thumbnails drop-down when uploading upgrades to existing books on the site via Edit.
People uploading via Edit on a book they've previously uploaded should check the box beside 'Reset Thumbnail:'.  It's just above the 'Preview' button you have to hit to start the upload process.

This is an odd one guys.  I just tried the Last 300 link you shared here and it's working fine for me on the latest version of FireFox and Chrome portable as well as a much older version of FireFox that still works on WinXP.

Can you both try the link on another web browser?  Also try hitting Ctl-F5 to force a full refresh of the page.

Tested and working here as well. Sounds like a cache in the web browser but a forced refresh should fix it.

Hah! Look's like that does the trick. Thanks.

Strange, though, as up until recently whenever I hit that link (often on a daily basis) it would show the latest books right up to the minute -- without having to do a refresh.  I'm on Chrome on a Mac, BTW.

Kathy #1 and 3 (Nedor) need to be fixed to display cover thumbnails.
New Romances #19 (Nedor) has the JVJ card as thumbnail.

Re: Harvey War Victory Adventures Series, not in dropdown.

I have a decent picture of the front and back of Harvey War Victory Adventures #2 front and back cover [ https://www.comics.org/issue/3070/ ] but I don't see it in the "dropdown" under Harvey.  Figured it would be a good placeholder until I, or someone else, can hunt one down.

Can it be added or should I not bother with a front and back cover only in the database?

Thank you.

Hi LG,
We only create 'folders' for titles when there were four or more issues.  Anything less you can find them in the publisher's folder.
In this case, we only have one issue of the title, #3, to share and it's in the Harvey folder.

We haven't shared just covers for missing books.  But thanks for thinking of us!

Take care,
-Yoc
