Ger Apeldoorn asking about future scans
« on: January 19, 2012, 12:08:59 PM »
Hi,

I'm highjacking just any post to ask if there is any place I can find to see who is doing what at the moment. I havea lot of random comics that ere nog yet included here, but they all take soemt time because I am scanning alongside my writig job at the computer. And then I have to clean up, straighten, make a bundle, upload... and the speed Ithings are going here, I am afraid I might be scanning tuff that is already in the works.

To make things concrete, since I am using a lot of Mort Meskin material on my blog (Westerner #19 anyone?) I want to start scanning issues of Justice Traps The Guity and Headline not yet available here. Do I claim them beforehand...?

Hi Ger,
I've split your post off into it's own topic to avoid confusion.

It might be a good idea to ask here on the forum if anyone is scanning a book before you start it.
Make it a new topic with the title name and number in the subject to get the most attention.

As far as I know the only people scanning Prize right now are BuilderBoy using JVJ books and Carl from time to time.

BBoy has the following books which will eventually all be scanned and shared - some already are on the site.
    PRIZE COMICS   21, 22, 23
    TREASURE COMICS   1-6
    JUSTICE TRAPS THE GUILTY   1-32
    BLACK MAGIC   1-4, 6

Carl (fan777) also sends out email updates occasionally to let fellow scanners know what books are being bid on by whom and what books are on different scanners 'to-do' lists.  We can add you to the list if you'd like to get these updates as well.

Let me know if you do and I'll pass along your email address you registered with to Carl or you can send me a private message (little word balloon under my avatar) or email (the envelope under my avatar) directly.

I forgot to mention -
there's not rule against having more than one version of any single comic on the site so any effort you make isn't wasted as far as we are concerned.  I'm sure you'd rather scan a book that's never been scanned before but if you should find you'd done a book already on the site please feel free to upload it anyways as a 'different version'.
Who knows, your copy might be in better shape or more complete than the one we already have.  And we only have a fiche scan of something you own we especially would welcome a paper version from you.
:)

Thanks! You can ad me to the mail list. I am in a very busy period workwise, so I am glad to hear JTTG 1-32 are already being processed I had already started scannning the Mort Mesking stories from the first isues upwards. I will now start doing books from the latest backwards. t will take at least a month for me to get anything really going, but that way I run the least chance of doing stuff that has already been done. I may even switch and start with Headline, if as it seems that book is not as well represented.

In the futue I can look and pick odd books that are missing. I have Tormented #1, all Mad imitation books, lots of Harvey Romances ans all sorts of weird stuff from the fifties.

And as for creating doubles. I want to deliver scans that are complete (including ads), slightly repaired (water damage removed, for instance) and straight. So that takes some time. In which case I prefer to do new books, although I get your point.

And how about the Humorama books? I think there should be a site doing all of them. The wealth of material in there is just stunning.

Hi Ger,
Sure, I'll pass along your email to Carl.  He's mainly trying to avoid bidding wars on books, especially as we get close to finishing Fiction House runs.  BuilderBoy is part of the group.

Tormented 1 might already be on the site if it's the same book - check here -
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=5108

I don't think anyone is doing Harvey Romances atm.

I'm not sure of the public domain status of Humorama.  Best hold off on those until we've checked.

If you've got anything that we've got incomplete versions of - feel free to download ours and add the missing pages and uploading a c2c version.  We've got a lot of incomplete books that need help if you can provide any.

Always feel free to post here or contact me directly if you have any questions.

I've wanted to see a lot of those Mad imitations ever since somebody did a great article on them in Alter Ego a while back...  ;D

Somebody might also have done a book about them is somebody else hadn't beaten him to it.

And that same somebody also has a complete collection of all the Mad magazine imitations and would love to do a book or article about them. But I guess people aren't that interested in unknown work by Joe Maneely, John Severin, Bob Powel, Bill Elder, Jack Davis, Lee Elias, Russ Heath, Jack Kirby and Joe Kubert...

I'd love to see Ger's collection on DCM.
That would be absolutely fantastic!
 :P
I'm offering manpower to scan, even. I'm doing it with Jim's books, and Ger and I are not that far apart (The Netherlands - Germany).
I won't do any post-editing though. Lacking the tools and the expertise for that.

So please do the book, Ger. I don't think it necessarily follows that because there was an article that there can't be a book. Nor does there being an article in any way imply that people aren't interested. I would think it manifestly shows that they ARE. Go for it!

Also it isn't quite accurate to call that work "unknown". "Little known" or "uncommon" might be a better description. I can point to articles of 40 years ago reflecting that information.

WOW I too love those mad imitations. I think there is still an unidentified issue here you can tell us what it is. Do you have the other issues of Zany. Blake Bell was looking for good scans of Bill E's work

So where is the unidentified Mad imitation, narf?
I'd like to take a crack at it. I don't have as many as Ger, but I might have your missing info.
