I am starting a new game here at DCM.
I ran across this type of game somewhere on the net a few years back and I just loved it!
What you will be trying to do is this. Name the comic book from the clues that I will be posting every few days.
There are two different type of clues: Visual and word clues.
A small segment of the cover of the comic will be posted along with a word hint. (It will always be a cover, no interior pages)
The comic will always be one that is on DCM.
O.K. Here we go! ( I hope the scan uploads!!)
Published after 1945...
-
No idea so far...
-
Since it is on DCM it is not the Creeper ::)
-
Nice guess!!! I had not noticed the color similarities...
b.
-
So would it be alright to ask questions like "In what genre would be book usually be placed?," or would things like that usually be part of the clues?
-
You can ask questions if you want to. But clues as to the genre will be a clue.
This particular series was one of the really good ones in it's genre....
I will give another clue tomorrow...
b.
-
Written and drawn by two of the greats...
-
Not Simon and Kirby correct?
-
Prize's Black Magic #1, by Kirby (no Simon credit per GCD, but JVJ would know better)
-
Which is why I could not find it. I did a Simon and Kirby search on GCD and this issue did not show up
-
Builderboy is correct!
I always thought that Simon and Kirby together did this book...
Sorry!
-
On to Quiz #2...
A book originally for the female market???
-
Drawn by the #1 artist of Good Girl Art...
-
I suck at this game
:(
-
Matt Baker.
Not a clue as to the comic. Possibly one of the many, many romance comics he did for St. John.
Joe
-
Teen Age Romances 32
-
Teenage Romances #32 is correct!!!!
-
Comic Three...
A title from one of the big publishers of the golden age!
-
Here is the comic image!!!
-
W0w #10.
(|:{> ;D
-
Jim has a good eye for the ladies.
-
Okay, here's one of mine:
1940's one shot
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/mp3.jpg)(|:{>
-
Looks a bit like Jack Cole...
-
Not Cole
I got this one right away so I will give others a chance.
-
Give it up Narf!
I haven't got a clue!
B. :-/
-
Great cover by a "Great Unknown".
-
It is a narfstar scaned book. I have a copy, lots of Howie Post inside.
-
This is probably the last comic work of the cover artist, and one of the first times he actually SIGNS (well, initials, actually) his work in a comic book.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/mp5.gif)And narf certainly has called this one. Love the Howie Post, narf, but it's the cover and first story that make this a treasure for me.
(|:{>
-
I agree Jim and I think we both expressed our appreciation when this book was first uploaded. A Classic
-
It's pretty obvious we're the only two, Narf.
The book is Slapstick #1:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/mp6.jpg)and the cover artist is Munson Paddock, who also does the first story in the book, a one-off character named Firetop! Do check it out, folks.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
The cover gives you an idea how cool an artist he was. It is too bad he did not do more comic work. The fact that I could get it from Jim's first little picture lets you know how much I love this cover.
-
From a long running GA western comic
-
Second clue
The artist was also the editor
-
Black Diamond Western #27.
(|:{>
-
Here's another by one of my Great Unknowns - who was great at good bad-girl art:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/elkan1.jpg)1940s. From one of the major publishers in the DCM listings.
(|:{>
-
Looks like a Fox or possibly Fiction House girl to me
-
Hint #2:
It's not a Fox comic.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/elkan2.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Hint #3:
It's not a Fiction House comic.
It's a western.
(|:{>
-
Still no idea but I like how you're showing a bit more each clue.
A nicely done cover so far. :)
-
Western Adventures 003
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=4383
Geo
-
You got it, Geo.
Congratulations. As winner, it's now your turn to submit one.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Here is an easy one until Geo picks one.
-
I figure you will get this right away Jim please wait and give others a chance ;) This one is a well known cover
-
ok
(|:{> :-X
-
Pioneer Western Romances #6
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=425
Why exactly is this particular comic / cover so famous???
B.
-
It's not, that I know of. I just recognized the Iger/Fiction House art job and they didn't do too many westerns. It's narf that thinks it's famous. Best if he responds.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I have seen it several places as an example of prurient GGA.
-
Doesn't that make it INfamous, narf?
;D
(|:{>
-
OK, here goes it. What issue is it?
(http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/5396/whatisit1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/820/whatisit1.jpg/)
Start your guesses. Enjoy.
Geo
-
First guess is it a crime comic?
Depends on ones perspective whether famous or infamous Jim 8)
-
I'll be posting another picture tomorrow Jim, no hint yet.
Keep looking folks.
Geo
-
I'd gamble on something like Charlton War circa 1958. Of which I'm not very familiar.
(|:{>
-
No, but your getting warmer. Here's the next clue.
Maybe this will help more.
(http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/9758/whatisit2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/163/whatisit2.jpg/)
Geo
-
Ajax Men in Action #4, Nov. 1957.
:D
(|:{>
-
Here's a new one for you. It's hard to know if these are readily familiar or obscure corner cases. Still, this should test your knowledge of 1940s comics:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-1.jpg)BTW, here's the full cover to the last contest:
http://www.comics.org/issue/224623/cover/4/ (http://www.comics.org/issue/224623/cover/4/)
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Nobody's got a clue, eh?
Here's a little more of the cover. Surprisingly, this is a MID-40s comic.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-2.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Here's a bit more. 1946.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Need more clues to go looking for the cover. Is it a war or possibly a horror comic?
-
1946 is a big clue, narf.
(|:{>
-
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-4.jpg):-\
-
Well, I can't show any more of the cover without giving it away (as if I haven't already - that's a hint in itself), so here's an interior page:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-5.jpg)Any guesses...
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Okay, one more clue and then I guess I'll just give up:
(|:{>
-
Sorry Jim, no idea
:(
-
I am not having any luck either
-
They say that "less is more" sometimes. So here's a close up of a portion of the last image. It's pretty much all there:
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
D'oh!
Picture News gang -
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=2706
-
Thanks, Yoc,
I was beginning to wonder if anyone was playing.
Your turn.
(|:{>
-
That is a series I have not paid any attention to. That is one weird cover maybe I should check out the series.
-
Here's a new one, guys.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-2-1.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
First hint: early 1940s.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-2-1.jpg)and, of course, on the site.
(|:{>
-
Second hint:
-
Grrr, this looks familiar but...
-
Third hint:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-2-3.jpg)"Comics" in the title and it cost 10˘. Come on. I don't eve care that much for covers, but I've seen this one often enough. Steampunk sf before it ever became popular.
(|:{>
-
Geo knows the answer but is shy I guess.
He tells me it was Prize Comics #4 -
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=9476
Thanks for the puzzle Jim. :)
-
Of course that's right, Yoc,
It looks like I'm the only one willing to post questions, so here's another one:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-1.jpg)Good luck. Only hint is that it's from the '50s.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
It looks like one of those Everett Raymond Kinstler western covers he did for Avon.
I just went through all of them I could find on the Grand Comics Database and came up with..
Nothing!
That is the head of a indian, or perhaps a pirate, but I may be wrong...
-

Yes, but I am MUCH more sneaky than that.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Even sneakier hint #2:
a non-contiguous portion of the cover.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-1.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-2.jpg)Good luck. Before 1955.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Looks like some sort of frilly dress.
I am leaning toward some sort of pirate book.
Is it Avon? It is Kinstler is it not?
-
I'll help you out, b,
Not Avon, Not Kinstler.
(|:{>
-
Even sneakier hint #3:
another non-contiguous portion of the cover.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-1.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-2.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-3.jpg)Good luck. Not Avon, not Kinstler.

Feels like we are playing 'Match Game' if I recall the name right.
I'm stumped again! :(
-
What genre? Pirates, Westerns, Space.
I am sure it is adventure of some sort.
One of the big publishers? Quality, Charlton? or one of the smaller ones?
I have spent to much time poking around on this one!
B.
:-/
-
I believe John has not told quite the truth as piece one and two ARE contiguous
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/temp/NameComic.jpg)They have just be resized at different ratios ... here I have put them together the other bit I believe fits at the top following the blade. But fat lot of help that is and it doesn't seem to make sense. I even tried rotating it :( And I can't figure out what is happening behind the head and arm and whether the yellow on the left fits with the yellow of the "dress"
I looked through Indians and all the Western romance I could find and drew a blank. I want the third piece to be part of a Senoritas dress ... but hey ho. This is a thread I wish I had not started reading :)
-
It's Jim, not John, Mark,
and you have NO idea how sneaky and misleading I can be. Tomorrow I'll tie them all together (or not), but I'll definitely give you more of the image.
Unless, of course, you figure it out beforehand.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Why wait? Here's hint #4:
another non-contiguous portion of the cover. I WILL tie the first three together tomorrow, as promised.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-1.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-2.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-3.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-4.jpg)Good luck.

B.
:-/
You get no hint on the genre, b,
as that would give it away. It is NOT an obscure publisher. We have over 100 comics from this publisher on DCM. Perhaps an obscure TITLE, but a well-known publisher.
Game's no fun if it's easy.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Looks like a pirate comic or something from Key
-
Do we have over 100 Key comics on DCM?
Okay, over 200 in this publisher. THAT'S a big clue right there.
(|:{>
-
Okay, I'm going to be pretty busy tomorrow, so I'll post the contiguous image tonight. Hope this helps:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic3-5.gif)and don't forget (not to scale - helpful and honest Jim):
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-4.jpg)Big company, lasted MORE than a decade.
Peace, ajim (|:{>
-
Jim
I know your name is Jim ... why I said I John I don't know .. I guess scrambled brains with the image ...... Ah, see i was right the "dress" does sit up the top ... now lets waste another few hours
-
Jim
Maybe if you gave us seven clues and we soldiered on we might just get a bit fortunate and find the answer :)
This time I'll add a bit (http://comicbookplus.com/images/temp/anotherpiece.jpg)
-
OKAY, MARK!
Way to go, and A Great Clue, too. Since your hint is #6, let me make this #7:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-7.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic3-5.gif)and don't forget (not to scale - helpful and honest Jim):
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-3-4.jpg)Big company, lasted 15 years.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
You got it right, Mark,
so it's your turn to come up with puzzle.
For everyone else, here's the whole cover minus the title. Hint, it's issue #7.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic3-7.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Solder of Fortune, American Comics Group, April 1952.
-
That was a toughy...
How about something from a particular artist now...
-
It was MEANT to be a toughy, b,
Since Mark won this round, we'll see what he comes up with. Next time it's my turn to list one, I'll see if I can abide by choosing an artist. Trouble is, my taste in "artists" is, in general, more widely inclusive than the average fan.
Get going Mark, give us something good and hard.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
ps. I will be unavailable from about noon on Sunday to about 3pm on Tuesday.
pps. I notice that my Total time logged in to DCM is approaching 5 (count 'em FIVE) days. Yikes!
-
O Ok .. I won!! That's a turn up for the books. Amazing!!!
I'll have to have a think, and as my comic book knowledge is zero minus one it will take a day or so to get the right one.
Monday I will start the new challenge ...
-
Take your time getting one together, Mark. I know you're busy over at CB+.
But while we're waiting, here's a new one:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-4-1.jpg)1940s. Big company.
Peace, Jim (|:{> (from Paris)
-
Have not got a clue...
-
I actually recognize having seen this but can place it. I thought it was a Harvey but can not find it there.
-
Have not got a clue...
Believe it or not, that's a clue. Here's a LITTLE bit more:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-5-2.jpg)Peace, JIm (|:{>
-
I almost looked in that direction originally but I thought it was a little more obscure. So with the "clue" I found it.
-
Congratulations, B,
Are you going to share the answer? Or tease the rest of the group? You could add your own little shot from the cover to add to the fun.
Good show. (|:{>
-
It's an ish of AIRBOY COMICS. I'm too lazy to look up the issue #, but we both know it is.
-
as always, dm,
a splendid level of participation and your usual dead on accuracy with the answer. Thanks.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I was going to give others a shot after some more clues but it is the first issue of Airboy
-
FINALLY, someone actually states the answer. Thanks, Narf.
That makes YOU the winner (after Mark), so start thinking up a good one for us. Yoo hoo, Mark?
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Man, I glanced through all the issues of Airboy AND Air Fighters and missed it!
Dog gone it!
B.
If no one minds, I would like to put one up.
Clue #1 - Not a superhero book.
-
Looks like Kirby to me
-
When do we get another piece of the puzzle, b?
Jim
-
I think a ghostly ghoul appearing out of a swamp. The Beyond, Forbidden Worlds or summat like that.
BTW sorry Jim I had one ready, but thought I might be gatecrashing and I then got distracted.
Mine is fiendish as hell and will be next. All set up and it will be a real challenge for you :)
-
We can have as many going as we like, Mark,
Fiendish is good. Bminor's is pretty fiendish. i.e. WHY is the hand in black and white? I was thinking a Spirit Section? Give us yours while we're waiting for an update on the "hand". Heck, doesn't EVERYONE multitask these days?
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Jim,
I am quadruple+ tasking ... just too much on BUT
Here we go. My only advice is to pay attention to detail!
Pretty lady, but where is she? (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/PrettyLady.png)Next image within the next 24 hours
-
You fellows must excuse me.
I had a art fair to do Saturday, from dawn to dusk.
Yesterday I spent wrestling a door into a outside wall! (still working on that)
Continuing:
Clue #2: Kirby is a good guess, but not quite right. One of the big guys though.
-
I found it so I will give another clue. I found it because the printing looked Charlton.
-
The printing looks like Charlton???
I think you are reading way to many old comics Narf!
B
-
I used all my powers and could not find it in Charlton :(
-
Charlton = Yes
By one of the great artists, who is still with us....
-
Well done, b,
Thanks for the clue, Narf!
It took me some searching even after I knew where to look!
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Please do
-
Nicely done Snard.
-
Damn, and double damn first place I looked and I missed it
-
Larger piece (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/LargerPiece.png)And Jim why aren't you multitasking?
-
Good idea Snard. I am really surprised that I have gotten 3 of these. I am not a visual person so the other clues have to jump out. The first by Jim I recognized as one of my favorites. The second clue/Clue got me going and then the Charlton printing for the third. I have no idea on Marks except it looks like a romance
-
Larger piece (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/LargerPiece.png)And Jim why aren't you multitasking?
I AM, Mark!
I've just spent the day reviewing and updating data cards on dozens of books with Tiliban - missing Standard crime, war and horror; Ace romance and Super-Mystery, and much more. I'm calling it quits for tonight, except to burst your bubble on Captain Rocket #1!
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Please do
This issue. (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=5046)
(posted in such a way that I won't give it away to those who want to figure it out for themselves)
Since you posted the answer, Snard, that means you get to post the next puzzle. Get going (please).
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Anyone recognize where this ugly guy comes from
-
Narf,
A visual clue
AND A
verbal clue, if you please...
b.
-
Jim! Ouch!
That was impressive
Regards,
Mark
-
I didn't answer either because I scanned that book from Jim's collection.
Geo
-
All I have to say b is that I think he is a mighty ugly cuss.
-
Anyone recognize where this ugly guy comes from
Samson Comics #6.
(|:{>
-
Nicely done Jim.
The book is here on the site -
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=18701
Your turn to start another on Jim.
:)
-
One of the rules was, I thought, Yoc, that the books HAD to be on site to qualify for the game!
As soon as Tiliban leaves tomorrow, I'll try to post an entry.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Well how about this in the meantime (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/face.png)And don't rain on my parade this time Jim ... I want you to have to work hard. Bet you get it in one though :(
-
I hate to tell you this, Mark,
but it was, quite honestly, the FIRST comic I looked at in my search for the answer.
I'll give someone else a chance at this and I'll start thinking about MY entry - which I hope will drive you all batty.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
All I have is a guy in a suit.
He looks a bit concerned about something.
Perhaps a philandering girl friend?
How about a word clue? Mystery, hero, romance?
b.
-
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/animal.png)Not a tiger on the prowl, so I think the genre (at least for the cover) is clear now.
-
Here's a new entry. I'm betting that narf gets it right away, but we'll see if anyone else knows:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-6-1.jpg)1950s. The hint is the image, but you have to think about it.
(|:{>
-
And another one for all comers:
1950's - fairly obvious genre
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-7-1a.jpg)(|:{>
-
Ok I have finally got a round to putting up the next image (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/moreofanimal.png)
-
Is the other persons hand in pretty much the same position? I know I have seen a comic cover, slightly oriental feel. With two people in rather symmetrical positions. (That sounds rather wrong lol)
But I can't find it :(
-
And another one for all comers:
1950's - fairly obvious genre - big hint: both pics are to scale.

(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-6-2.jpg)1950s. The hint is the image, but you have to think about it.
And this one keeps getting weirder, too.
(|:{>
-
I thought I'd able to find it (the postbox sized one) but so far have failed. Another clue and I might well
Anyway here is another one of mine (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/lady.png)I just hope that you can start seeing the wood from the trees.
-
Hint #3 on my puzzle #6. I'm very surprised that narf hasn't got this one yet.
(|:{>
-
I think the title has Weird in it and also #2 for the issue but I cannot find it.
I am also intrigued why the last image is a .gif and all the rest .jpg. Yes, Jim I am looking to see if you have the next clues lined up, but you are too canny for that lol.
-
I am sure I recognize that hand and present but just can not place it. Just seen too many covers over the years to narrow it down. I looked where I thought but I was wrong.
-
Not even close, Mark,
Here's the REALLY big fourth clue:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-6-4.gif)This looks better in gif, I think.
(|:{>
-
Another clue:
1950's - fairly obvious genre - big hint: all THREE pics are to scale.
-
Yeh!! I know what you is Jim!!
-
Well done, Mark,
now for the "present"...?
(|:{>
-
A blank .. need some other info
-
Another clue:
1950's - fairly obvious genre - big hint: all THREE pics are to scale, but text is NOT.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-7-4.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-7-3.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-7-2.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-7-1a.jpg)(|:{>
-
Okay, let's give it away and get some new ones to play with::
1952 - Romance- big hint: all fOUR pics are to scale, but text is NOT.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-7-5.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-7-4.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-7-3.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-7-2.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-7-1a.jpg)
-
For those who haven't yet got Mark's Cat cover:
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=8410 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=8410)
And my mainly blank page was:
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=15460 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=15460)
Still waiting on the "petting...?"
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Looks like that "good girl" artist, who was at Prize for a bit, Matt Baker. I am probably wrong though.
Looked through all the romance titles their and came up with nuttin...
bminor
-
GREAT BIG HINT!
DCM has ONLY this issue from this title.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Okay! One more BIG hint! Note the last letter of the artist's signature on the top image.
(|:{>
-
Jim a question?
Is the "Shameful love" something to do with the two men who appear to be exchanging presents behind her back, or have "I tempted fate"
-
Jim a question?
Is the "Shameful love" something to do with the two men who appear to be exchanging presents behind her back, or have "I tempted fate"
Okay, Mark,
But it still took you SEVEN CLUES! Give me a tough one.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Jim,
Are you beating me up for getting all your last few comics?
Jeez, I am going to make this such a toughie that all you'll be able to hear is your brain cells squeaking as one by one they admit defeat.
I'll start it tomorrow (when I find one that you won't get at the first attempt lol)
Regards,
Mark

hard one to find

true, but oh what a cover!
:o
-
Well here goes!
-
don't we get some time frame or genre, Mark?
(|:{>
-
It's funny, this almost feels like that old game show -
'Name That Tune'.
'I can guess that comic in three clues Dan...'
-
This guy has the nose of a Rankin Bass Hobbit....
-
So Jim you have not got this in one! At last I have you!
Maybe, this will teach you a lesson!
-
Ah so you still grappling with this one? OK I'll throw you a big clue. Finding the owner of this hair will pretty much solve it.
-
Does Dr. Cosneck know that you're throwing his name around so casually?
For the record:
I got it in THREE with ZERO context (decade, genre, anything other than a partial face, etc.) hints
AND at least people have HEARD of the comics I pick.
Interesting choice, but obscurity isn't all that much fun.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
It's funny, this almost feels like that old game show -
'Name That Tune'.
'I can guess that comic in three clues Dan...'
Exactly my score, Yoc.
Don't I get some sort of "attaboy", Mark?
JVJ
-
BRAVO!!
But there were hints there! "teach you a lesson" "grappling" and funny enough the next one was going to be "see a Dr." plus I was going to throw some other words in (blimey "throw" I still can't stop it).
That was VERY impressive in fact majorly so. I think it's a cool little series and you said throw you a toughy. Also, I love the obscure stuff.
So after I get your next one, which I WILL DO, I will make it even more obscure or maybe just give you a Crack Western that you'll get in one.
Regards and YEP you won (this time)
-
Well, could someone post what exactly the book was for those of us still uninformed?
B.

Sorry, b,
I thought Mark would post this:

Big apologies,
I was licking my wounds and forgot to say ...

Actually it was Judo Joe #2. But I didn't find until JVJ's hint.

This is just a little too broad for me to get a handle on, cw. Can I get a genre, an era, something to narrow it down a hair?
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
It's from the 1940s
(http://cooperway4.zoomshare.com/files/ntc/ntc-1b.jpg)Ha Ha - you'll never get this one (maybe)
(more hints to follow, remember I'm new at this)
-
Okay, the year is 1947 (in what is sometimes referred to as the Atomic Age)
(http://cooperway4.zoomshare.com/files/ntc/ntc-1c.jpg)Next hint will be the genre.
-
HA HA, cooperway, bet you thought you had me going 44 ways from Sunday, but I still named that book in THREE clues. Very interesting cover.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Well for those of you without a magic lamp to help, this was going to be the next hint (like the second hint didn't totally blow it):
Aww, don't look so shocked to find out it's a funny animal comic
(http://cooperway4.zoomshare.com/files/ntc/ntc-1d.jpg)Looks like you're up next, Jim.
-
I looked at Ha Ha when you put it in your clue. I thought it was too obvious and I didn't look properly. More fool me!
-
Okay, folks,
sorry to have been away, but I caught a bug on Nuit Blanche (or else it was the 45 year old Bourgogne) and I've been resting for some days now. Here's a "gimme". 1950s.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-9-1.jpg)Paix, Jim (|:{>
-
Hope you are feeling better Jim.
I'm terrible at this game though... :(
-
Jim,
I am not a Dr, but I think from your description you might have caught what over here is described as an "almighty hangover" :)
No idea on the first clue
-
That rates another "HA HA", Mark,
Would that it had been that simple. I HATE it when I'm sick here. There's all of PARIS out the window and I'm achy and weak. Today I'm well and I need to seek out another bottle of that 1967 Corton Bressandes, if it's still available. One bottle of red, one white among 5 adults isn't going to make anybody tipsy, let alone dole out a hangover.
Hint #2:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-9-2.jpg)Paix, Jim (|:{>
-
Only teasing! Hope you still feeling better
I now have a Hemingway like vision of you. In a Parisian garret probably with a pain (bread I mean) and cheese, standing writing at your desk. Before you head out with your last few centimes to sit outside your local bar with an absinthe (beret obligatory).
Clue #2 I think there maybe treasure involved
-
I knew you were teasing, Mark,
Keep looking for this one. It's almost "famous".
As for Paris, nothing at all like Hemingway (despite Mr. Kinstler's flattering portrait). We have a lovely apartment on the 1er etage of an 1895 building in the 17th arrondissement. Not a bit like a garret. Not posh, but very comfortable - Tiliban slept in the 2nd bedroom when he was here. We enjoy good food, la vie Parisenne, and I wasn't kidding about the 45-year-old wine - our great weakness (after the cuisine). So, yeah, think of me with the baguette, la fromage, la pate, and really, really, really good wine.
A not-so-helpful hint: there's water involved.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-9-3.jpg)Paix, Jim (|:{>
-
This is sounding Scott Fitzgerald rather than Hemingway. I am a philistine when it comes to wine .. so I just stick to beer
And to be honest the hint was pretty useless seeing as the first picture had water in it! Hmmmmm .... I wonder
-
Firzgerald is a tad too sophisticated for us. We're just folks (lucky, hard-working folks), but just folks. The last clue was more meaningful than you might imagine, but in a subtle way. Hmmmm, indeed.
Paix, Jim (|:{>
-
Anybody playing? Here's clue 4:
BIG hint. The name of the comic.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-9-4.jpg)And the other clues:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-9-1.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-9-2.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-9-3.jpg)Paix, Jim (|:{>
-
I am ... but failing REALLY BADLY ... I hope you did better sourcing your wine. but as it is Friday I guess you will be on Jay's yacht seeing who can fire their champagne cork furthest into the Seine.
-
not having any luck
-
I'm thinking it's possibly a western or maybe a Famous Stories type book looking at the clues so far...
-
Had another go ... fail ... I see a boat and pirates fighting ... well I don't as I can't find it
-
Here's clue FIVE:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-9-5.jpg)and another hint: it is one of the VERY first implementations of a modern comic theme/practice.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-9-4.jpg)And the other clues:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-9-1.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-9-2.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-9-3.jpg)Paix, Jim (|:{>

Gotcha!!!! All I can say is #13 and think colors .. or not depending on your point of view :):):):)

Looks like it's Mark's turn

Congratulations, Mark,
For the record, it's here:
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=5419 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=5419)
What's up, Mark?
(|:{>
-
Well here we go (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/new1.png)and Jim to make it easy for you, it is not a romance
-
How did you find that Mark? I still don't know even with knowing the book now.
-
Jim (Narf), I decided to try random and luckily I was fortunate enough to get an interesting cover. Clue #2 a bit of female interest (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/new2.png)Edit: Whoops sorry Jim I realized what you were asking and unfortunately I am duty bound not to reveal how I found it ;)
-
Clue # THREE! I just hope this is not too difficult. To help a large strip ..(not in proportion)(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/newstrip2.jpg)
-
Just got back into this, Mark,
and, though it's maddeningly familiar, I've NO idea. The falling (?) figure's face looks like it was drawn by Ralph Mayo, and this seems to be some jungle heroine book, but my brain is drawing (ha ha) a complete blank. Sounds like Narf already knows the answer. Why not tell us, Jim? This is supposed to be an open game, isn't it?
Maybe something will gel with another clue, but I doubt it. Either I know these things or I don't.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
If I would have been right in the place I looked I would let you know. It was not what I thought. I won't say where I looked because I may use that next time for mine.
-
I am starting a new game here at DCM.
A small segment of the cover of the comic will be posted along with a word hint. (It will always be a cover, no interior pages)
The comic will always be one that is on DCM.
I'm just double-checking to make sure that this is on DCM?
(|:{>
-
So Jim(s), how unfortunate you are not doing too well ... we are now at clue # FOUR and in fact with all the help I have given I'll call it # FIVE!
I'll make it an even bigger strip.
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/new5.jpg)And yes Jim it is indeed on DCM, so you're just going to have to soldier on ...
-
Indeed, Mark,
great hints and images, but I simply don't know the book, You have me on this one.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
O dear ... I thought that you'd find this one easy. I'll put up some more stuff tomorrow
-
Ok I've finished with the strips so we are back to squares ... Now I bet someone will recognize who this is and I'll be washed up(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/new5.png)
-
Okay, I get that it's Capt. Easy and (I suppose) Wash Tubbs, but I have never collected nor paid much attention to strip reprint comics. My personal "definition" of comic books doesn't really include newspaper strips. So even knowing all of this, I still couldn't tell you where the cover appeared. Brian, Jim, SOMEBODY out there should know or has the game devolved to just some individual challenges between you and me. So now you know, pick a strip reprint title and I'm dead in the water.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I made the "great" sacrifice of looking up Captain Easy comics and found this at Standard:
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=16389 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=16389)
You have found my weak spot, Mark, or rather a direction in which I take no interest.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Since I finally got it, here's my first clue for my round 10:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-10-1.jpg)It don't think it's that bad of hint.
(|:{>
-
Lol ... but Jim you got it! ... but you didn't see my clues ... "make it easy for you" "find this one easy", "not too difficult" "strip" "soldier" "fortunate" etc ...
OK I promise I'll behave (for now) and next one I do, I'll choose a "proper" "non-obscure" title ... but somehow making sure you don't get it in one is the problem.
Regards,
Mark
-
In retrospect, Mark,
yes. What was cloudy became clear. But you have to understand that I'm an art kind of guy. I actually told myself with the first clue that it was a Standard book. Seriously. That face was pure Ralph Mayo and that's where he was when that kind of cover was being done. But, as I said, I never once thought of a strip reprint book. My blind spot, sad to say.
Good luck with my #10.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Jim, I got it some time ago that you are an art guy. That is why you built your collection ... plus I had a good sniff around your site :)
I actually chose the comic, as if you look at the other two in the section I believe they are in a different hand and it looked like rather a nice piece of art, in a different league from them and was not signed (honestly I really did)
I cannot find this one, but I know I have seen it. I think Red saboteurs and spy genre. Maybe a named crime buster, but I go for ships about to be blown up.
-
You're pretty good at this, Mark.
You'll probably get this in three.
Here's clue #2.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-10-2.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I know I have seen this but a blank :(
-
Since you're struggling with the clues, Mark,
I'll give you a hand:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-10-3.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Only P.D. comics are allowed here. Otherwise it's a crime.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-10-4.jpg)Don't forget:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-10-3.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-10-2.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-10-1.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Jim, you're not giving us anything here!
Including "Giving me a hand" , ouch ...well a gun on a cover probably will mean a bloody corpse ... so all we know so far after all that is it not spy.
In other words I am no further forward, have no clue and am grumpy about it :(
-
Mark might have had it in 5 if he was a Star detective :)
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=1620
-
Nice job Cooper. And a nice choice too Jim.
-
I'll start y'all off with a relatively useless hint
(http://cooperway4.zoomshare.com/files/ntc/ntc-2a.jpg)
-
Well done! Very impressive and thanks for putting me out of my misery on that one.
-
Well done, Cooperway4,
You were SO close, Mark.
I think Red saboteurs and spy genre. Maybe a named crime buster, but I go for ships about to be blown up
You had the time period ('50s = Red saboteurs) and crime. I thought you were hot on the trail.
I'll have to think on this one, CW4, but I probably won't be back to the computer for 10 hours. So perhaps this will be Mark's turn (or Narf's).
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I'll widen the view a little more, I chose this part of the cover because it struck me as odd and something I'm not soon to forget.
-
Yes I can see why lol!
-
looks like we have a western hunt to do
-
Raising my voice for the first time here.
Because I am really bad at this game - watching it so far.
But I know what this is!
Let's give you a hint: That banner behind the male figure brandishes a swastika.
Ring a bell?!
-
Nope .... but it is your go next!
-
Remembering what's on a cover isn't the same as remembering what book it's from :)
-
Indeed and it feels good to know :)
I guess that is a Space Vigilante punching the Nazi in the bottom right hand corner.
-
Thanks, coop, for showing us the banner in whole.
That is already half of the cover.
Rest is just nazis rushing in and getting punched in der face, ja?
Guesses, anyone?
Else I'll solve. With next post.
This book is NOT up on DCM, by the way. Just checked.
-
I hope this means Coop will be upping it soon
-
This book is NOT up on DCM, by the way. Just checked.
Ah, but one of the rules is that the book HAS to be up on DCM, tman. It's Charlton's Space Western, issue #44, by the way. And I think Mark is right, you must put up a puzzle next.

Bedtime in Germany!
Afore going to sleep, Ill feed you a next piece of the puzzle.
Clue number two.
Even better than a hooded character sneaking around in the background: a shapely leg!
-
Darn it was not what I thought gotta try again.
-
Awful quiet on the western front.
Am uploading next detail now, because Im stepping out for the night.
Visiting the Playboy club in Cologne.
No kidding, actually.
There is a Playboy club here, its comedy night and Ill be meeting some artists.
Ah, the tedious life of la boheme, dont you wish you could be there!
But you have work to do
What is the cover, please???
-
It's a hard job but someone got to do it right T?
;)
-
Back from Playboy life. Its a nice stylish bar where one can smoke Cuban cigars!
In a cabinet one of Hughs pyjamas is on display and one pair of his slippers, houseshoes or what (of a frightening size!).
And young women actually do serve drinks in "bunny" outfits. Is this degrading to women?
Of course it is.
But here in Cologne its carnival/mardi gras all year round, so we dont pay that much attention to costumed people.
Its all a joke really and no one is ogling.
Speaking of ogling and degrading to women:
How about our mystery cover?
Give you one last verbal clue: It IS a horror comic book.
But naming the company would give it away quite quickly.
So one last picture will follow in eight hours set your watches, gentlemen.
-
I checked through a ton of horror comics and did not find it. Maybe my eyes are just too old
-
Is it really that hard?
Here's most of the cover.
Go get it.
-
Still no one?
You're not yanking MY chain, are you?!
-
Blimey ... no wonder you thought the Playboy Club just a bit of a laugh

Turned out to be one I hadn't downloaded.

Sorry, narf, close call.
Congrats to cooper!

Okay, I haven't had time to come up with one, so if someone wants to jump in with a new one that'd be great.
-
Totally missed out on the last round, guys, but I don't think I would have gotten it anyway.
Here's one to while away the time, though it's probably best that I don't give too many clues. I will acknowledge that it's 1940s.

It's Mark's turn. Or, cooperway's, if he's now up to it.

Thanks Jim. Mark, don't be shy about letting us slow pokes know the answer too.

I'll start us off with an appropriate themed one for today

You can't play that with me.
Too good at horror covers.
But let's hear more from you.
I'll widen the search parameter.

Speedy Jim :) I always like to give a little time for others to figure it out. I'll Pretend that I do not know this one 8) I have no idea why or how this one jumped in my head almost right away and was the first place that I looked.
Here is the link for those who do not want to try to figure it out if Jim wants to put more clues.

Since I got the last two here is one from me.

Good and fast, narf.
However, it is best NOT to name your .jpg file with the answer to the quiz...

A stab in the dark. Is that Sweetie Pie 02?
-
Hey! Hey! Hey!
I live on the other side of the world, so gimme some time to wake up.
You guys are fast. Solving two more while I had my nightly nap.
Seems to be my turn, so lets have this one:
-
Anybody know why I have to LOG IN to see Tiliban's scan? Most times the cover portions are available to view while I'm browsing the site, but some (like narf and tiliban) I can't see until I log in. How are you guys posting the pics?
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Sorry if you're having difficulties.
I am now attaching JPEGs from my desktop - like I do when uploading books.
Stopped using that detour via a picture-website-thingie where you'll have to get an URL.
That a mistake on my part.
I can see my posts just fine.
-
tilliban
I think the reason for this is that you are just one of the "screwballs in skirts"
-
I meant that as a question:
Is that a mistake on my part?
To upload things like I do?
Hitting bed again, so I'll try a next post - and show you a larger portion of my mystery cover.
Enjoy.
-
Ahaaaa, I see Mark is onto something.
Excellent. Very perceptive.
I think you may resolve our puzzle.
As you seem fit.
-
Cigar or cigarette? Such a dizzy choice
-
Hi T,
No, I think you are using a correct method. One can post links to sites like ImageShack or use the Attachment option.
-
Thanks Yoc for the confirmation.
Mark, you're making me laugh.
Good morning, everybody.
Germany's awake.
Here's most of the cover.
And Mark may tell you the answer.
-
I thought he already did, there's only like 6 issues to choose from. Had it been like a long running Fawcett title we might want clarification, but as it stands it appears to be Mark's turn.
-
Yes, it is.
And for your clarification, it was DIZZY DAMES #2 from ACG.
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=10520
-
Ok ... I'll put one up tomorrow morning ... I have no idea what it will be
-
just be sure to include the title in the file name for us morons :P
-
While we're waiting for Mark,
and just because I think that there should always be a puzzle available.
From one of the weirdest covers of all time:

Thanks and no clue yet on the cover.

Game starting with this (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game1.png)
-
I wish I knew the answer to this one, Mark. Not yet. I get a kind of Bob Powell, 1950, ME western vibe from it, but that doesn't seem to help at all - so it's probably wrong. Can you narrow down the era for us?
Here's the next clue for my time-waster: Post WWII.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-13-4.jpg)Have fun. Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Second clue (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game2.png)and time frame is Space Age ... As for yours Jim I see a cover with an oversized animal on it (just cant find it)
-
No "oversized animal" on MY cover, Mark. Just regular ones.
Any chance that if you're going to show such a tiny section of the cover that you could actually make it large enough to be seen? Not only are you being rather stingy with the content, which is certainly your prerogative, but you seem to deliberately make the images too small for these old eyes. The idea of the game should be for us to name the comic based on seeing pieces of the cover. The use of a magnifying glass shouldn't be a necessity. A few more pixels, please?
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Just to show that I'm a nice guy and don't hold a grudge, clue #4 is a twofer (and please notice how generous I am with the pixels, Mark):
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-13-5.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-13-3.jpg)More bang for the buck, but then it's all free anyway...
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
That orange - is it Ben Grimm in some early FF issue?
;)
-
Two ... just two stinking pictures, I give three!
Image two is an eagle!
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game3.png)And I think this is a farmer
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game4.png)This is a soldier
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game5.png)And this is probably a clue too far ....
-
Don't you think that you went a bit obscure on your choice?
Will Andy's dog be alright? But at least we know how good radiation can be!
-
http://www.comics.org/issue/251405/cover/4/ (http://www.comics.org/issue/251405/cover/4/)
For those who HAVEN'T solved the mystery, I chose Picture Parade #1, one of the truly bizarre covers in the history of comics! What WERE the artist and the editor thinking of? Let's do a sentimental picture of a boy and his dog and then let's get ready to turn them to bone and ash. Yeah, that'll sell this new comic.
Is it obscure? To some, yeah. Published by Gilberton (Classics Illustrated), so it's not THAT far off the mainstream.
I'm still working on yours, Mark. Haven't much time right now.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
It's the inspiration for Johnny Cash!
http://www.comics.org/issue/14307/cover/4/ (http://www.comics.org/issue/14307/cover/4/)
Good one. Popular title and cover. Lots of variety in the image. Just a little pat on the back for me for recognizing Powell from the first little clip from the cover.
I think you're still up from your previous wins. I've got to work this week, so I'll be monitoring, but probably not as involved.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Well done Jim!
Yeh ... the Picture Parade i went to as soon as i saw your last images. it's an issue I bumped across a month or so back and is bizarre to say the least!
You working? Well I'm always working, At the moment I am doing a lot of thumbnails of covers etc ... hence me finding stuff!
I'll get another one ready for tomorrow
-
Here we are a new comic and it is probably my all time favorite cover!
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/MoreFun1.png)And as I am late putting it up a second image to apologize for my tardiness
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/MoreFun2.png)
-
I am thrilled, Mark, and I have no idea.
What do the oters say?
-
Well to thrill people a bit more (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/MoreFun3.png)That's it till Jim tunes in as I want to see with those three clues if he can get it. I really do like this cover
-
No clue, Mark,
I see the artist as Pen Shumaker, which implies an Archie connection, but beyond that, I'm stumped. It appears to be either Romance or Crime and circa 1949-1950. My best guess.
Don't recognize the cover.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Ah now this is getting interesting! (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/MoreFun5.png)To help that wavy line is a crease and also according to GCD the cover was drawn by someone called : "?". They appear to have been very busy as "?" is credited for everything in this issue. But do not let that fool you this is not an obscure issue from an obscure publisher far from it!
-
This really IS fun, but I'm still stumped.
Dazed and confused.
Can't find it. Give another clue?
-
Ok
This may give the game away
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/MoreFun4.png)I just love this cover so much
-
When I don't know, I don't know, Mark.
Not something I seem to be familiar with. Another good one. Sure hope that someone else jumps in and IDs it.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
This cover is just so cool! Here I am pretty much giving the game away. (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/fun.jpg)Big publisher long running title and another bit (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/MoreFun6.png)... but it's probably not of any use
If you were attending the Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy you might well buy this off the newsstand to read on the plane (or most likely boat).
There, can I really help you any more???
-
So you tell us it's 1956.
Code-approved... romance, probably.
Charlton?
But I wouldn't know where to look.
I'm throwing in the towel, I give up!
-
Charlton yes but not a romance Unusual Tales 2.
I will put one up later today WITHOUT THE NAME IN THE FILE
-
Well done Jim!!!
And here in all its glory is a masterpiece (of I do not quite know what)
-
Does anyone recognize this face? He appeared in two different titles neither of which bore his name. In his first appearance he messed up his own name. I have this book (not his first appearance) although the upload is not mine.
-
Getting a Sekowsky vibe here!
But he didn't do covers, just a handful.
-
Mark Fabian in After Dark #8.
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=11873&page=1 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=11873&page=1)
To the other Mark, that was a comic I'd never seen and you're right, the cover IS by ?.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Here's a classic:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-14-1.jpg)Get it in one, gang!
:)
(|:{> (who is still working and can't play much)
-
OK Jim I just gotta know how you got mine so quickly. I had some nice hints all lined up.
-
Sorry, Jim,
I know Sekowsky's work so well and, as Tiliban noted, he didn't do that many covers. And his Sterling work is legendary. A quick look at After Dark was all it took.
Mark's last one was a book and an artist I didn't know, hence, he got me. I had no idea where or when to look.
C'est la vie, eh?
ps You ALL should know my latest.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Here's a classic:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-14-1.jpg)(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-14-2.jpg)Get it in one, gang!
Or in TWO, but please, no more than that!
:)
(|:{> (who is still working and can't play much)
-
Damn.
That really WAS a Sekowsky cover.
I'm feeling depressed and take the day off.
(confer my comments in current uploads).
-
And I am sulking as no one seems to have appreciated my cover by "?" ... plus I have no idea and can't find it
-
And I am sulking as no one seems to have appreciated my cover by "?" ... plus I have no idea and can't find it
Not something I seem to be familiar with. Another good one.
Mark's last one was a book and an artist I didn't know, hence, he got me. I had no idea where or when to look.
To the other Mark, that was a comic I'd never seen and you're right, the cover IS by ?.
Three pats on the back is my limit, Mark. Just sayin'.
As for the CONTENT of the cover: eh... Kinda of odd, but I'd be hard pressed to put it into my "favorites" folder...
(|:{>
-
My mind is saying that I have seen the cover but have not formed it yet. When the company gets to my mind I may be able to find it. Mark's was difficult because that girl did not have a Charlton look to me. That darn ? was such a versatile character with a wide variety of styles.
-
I can GUARANTEE you that you've seen the cover, narf.
Here's another hint - the book is older than I am.
(|:{>
-
One more quick hint, guys.
-
I was referring to my exquisite taste and the unearthing of "?" as a true comic book great, not the fact that I outwitted the Silver Fox :)
But anyway back to business can't find it ... looked in Four Favorites which seemed promising, but was a red herring unless I missed it
Still stumped, but I am guessing it's a narf scan?
-
Taste is a personal thing, Mark. Let's leave it at that.
Here's clue #4 for you comic readers:
-
I am guessing it's a narf scan?
For the record, Mark, I always check the scanner and would never remind narf of something he scanned.
(|:{>
-
Those first two pictures rang a visual bell, but can't put my finger on it.
I suppose it's a war time book - and I am no good with these.
Pass.
-
Great BIG hint #5 (plus putting it all in position - which is probably an even BIGGER hint):
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-14-5.gif)Don't give up the fight just yet guys!
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Air Fighters Comics v1 08
Jeez that was hard!
-
But YOU got it, Mark!
You have to admit that it's a mainstream title and a major company and a classic character and a pretty memorable cover, though. Good show.
Your turn again. Is anybody else playing or are we being too esoteric in our clues?
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Dang! I knew that earring was familiar! Grrrr.
Nice job Mark. :)
-
Being an auditory learner some non-picture hints would be helpful. I am really surprised by some of the ones I have gotten.
-
OK ... I thought to liven it up I'll choose 2 comics .... well to be honest I couldn't decide which one
here is comic one
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game1-1.png)here is comic two
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game2-1.png)I think these are probably really easy ... at the very least I am expecting a guess at the artists
PS: Jim (both of you) I am going to try not to give sneaky clues, but will probably fail.
PPS: There is a very tenuous connection between the two comics
-
I've caught the flu (or some similar virus - since I HAD my flu shot) and have not been at the computer for days. Still not up to much, but wanted to check in and let you know that even if I WAS focusing, I'd probably not get either of these quickly.
Back to bed.
(|:{>
-
Get well soon, Jim!
I've been under the weather myself this week. Still am.
And begging for more clues.
-
Ok I hope you both feel better soon. Maybe a good couple of clues may help. Well here are a concussed tiger and the eye of a girl. Maybe they'll help in spotting the art work.
Comic 1
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game1-1.png)(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game1-2.png)Comic 2
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game2-1.png)(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game2-2.png)
-
The first cover is picking at a spot in my brain. I know that I have seen it.
-
First cover is SQUEEKS #2.
-
Good job DM now it is your turn
-
Well done!! Artist was Biro ... So start a new one .. and I'll carry on with #2
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game2-1.png)(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game2-2.png)Third clue ... (I think we can safely say it is a woman) Comic, character (ah now there is a clue) and artist. Have a guess
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/game2-3.png)
-
HA!
I finally got one before you guys! ;D
(Jim would have gotten it if not sick but hey, I still got it.)
The last clue got it for me and the Matt Baker sexy mouth confirmed it.
Canteen Kate #2 - http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=5759 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=5759)
I'll let Narf do the next one for me.
-Yoc
-
A comic book called SQUEEKS ?!?!?
Jeez. Never heard of that before. Hate animal comics.
Okayokayokay, Barks and Gottfredson excepted... and maybe some more.
:D
Congrats to Yoc!
And to Mark W. for his creative choice. Nice work.
-
I am defeated ... well done Yoc!
But you won so should be choosing a cover!
-
A comic book called SQUEEKS ?!?!?
Jeez. Never heard of that before. Hate animal comics.
Okayokayokay, Barks and Gottfredson excepted... and maybe some more.
:D
Congrats to Yoc!
And to Mark W. for his creative choice. Nice work.
Squeeks in Crimebuster's monkey, but it turned out he didn't have enough fans to carry his own book; it didn't last long.
-
HA!
I finally got one before you guys! ;D
(Jim would have gotten it if not sick but hey, I still got it.)

I'll let Narf do the next one for me.
-Yoc
Damn your eyes, Yoc!
I was just coming back to life and to the game and Mark's "character" clue hit me in the face! I coulda' been a contenda!
Never even heard of Squeek, so I wasn't in contention for that one.
Waiting for a new challenge.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
OK here is one for Yoc
-
It's a tiny tug boat. I got nothing.
-
Is there any reason why the image has to be so small, narf?
It's possible to let us SEE the portion of the cover you're showing! Showing a small portion and showing a tiny image are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. I simply can't play if we're going to make the pictures that tiny. Sorry.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Unfortunately the scan does not allow for larger or it becomes unclear. The one up is actually enlarged from the first that I tried to put up. I put up a larger pic
-
If anyone gets it from that I'm very impressed.
I'll need another clue that's for sure.
-
ditto. Can we get some sort of era/genre/etc. clue? Personally, I can't even make out the boat that Yoc sees. This must be a VERY minute portion of the cover.
(|:{>
-
The way some people get these with a bear minimum.....
This is from a very obscure book. Here is more of the pic
-
To show that I am not heartless here is a face to go with the picture from the mid forties. The company was not one of the top sellers or comic publishers.
-
Narf,
Is this a comic game or is it a card game? If so I guess the Jack of Spades!
-
How did you get it so quickly Mark? You are just too good at this game.
-
Certainly better than I am, narf.
I've never even HEARD of Jack of Spades comic!!! Wouldn't have gotten it in a million years. GOOD show, Mark.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Ah, one of Narf's favourites... I should have guessed!
-
Well it is actually Tops Comics 2003 featuring the Jack of Spades. I gave my cheezy clues about not being heartless and the company not being at the top. It looks like Mark picked up on the clues. YES it is one of my favorites. Wouldn't the Jack of Spades on the cover make a great statue for BlazingSkull to make. Probably much to obscure though.
-
The reason is I cheat
OK on with the next game and you'll either love or hate this one
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/nov1.png)
-
I thought spontaneously of Matt Fox.
But can't find a corresponding cover.
(and I'm laughing as I write this down, this is a silly game, fun)
-
Being a lover not a fighter, I'll settle for:
http://www.comics.org/issue/8225/cover/4/
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Since I stupidly gave away my last drum pic how about this one.
-
Nice one Jim (JVJ) .. I had lots of (super) teasers set up damn!!!
-
To the north and east of the drum is another instrument. I think someone will get it from this.
-
I've got it but it's not fair, I worked on it so I'll let someone else figure it out.
-
Don't worry Narf I've done the next clue for you
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/notsouth.png)
-
Is it the musical version of this horror story?
(sorry, silly again)
-
HA! Reminds me of my dad with his teeth on the overnight stand!
-
I still haven't figured out the drum and teeth one, narf, but I did get Mark's last entry, so here is one of mine:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-15-1.jpg)Another priceless cover for a crazy comic.
(|:{>
-
Jim,
If you still haven't got it I'd suggest that you turn direction and head north. Yours rings a big bell will have a hunt tomorrow
-
Hi Jim,
I'm not sure why Mark isn't letting people know right off but here is the teeth one -
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=18096
An edit I did for Brian a little while back.
-Yoc
-
Yeah, an edit of one of MY comics!! Jeez, is the memory going or what? Good pick, narf. Just goes to prove how lucky I am when I DO get one.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Clue #2 gives you just a bit more to tease the answer out of you:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-15-2.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Gonna be busy tomorrow, guys,
so I'm making a little more of the cover visible for clue #3 tonight.
Good hunting.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-15-3.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Well it is not Detective Chimp because that is DC
-
Since you got the chimp, narf, here's the rest of him for clue #4.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-15-4.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Not a clue for me. Looks fun though...
-
Not a one-off,, but a fair-sized run of a title from a major company, Yoc,
Post-war, with a major artist inside. It's hidden in plain sight. Clue #5.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I'm going ape here.
Never seen this before.
Promise of great cheesyness, though.
-
C'mon, Mark, it's been three days. Not like you to not join in the hunt, or is this one too easy for you? I've shown about 1/3 of the cover.
Two more hints:
1. It's one of MY comics
2. (http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-15-5.jpg)(|:{>
-
Ok Jim,
You got me, sure I have been lurking ... BUT
I believe it's a gorilla not a chimp and that is the most input I can give. I drew a blank on all your clues ... tried circles, film, movies, spotlight etc
Plus, it's a cover I have not seen. I would definitely remember it if I had
Am stumped and it hurts
-
You'll dig it up eventually, Mark.
Here's fully HALF the cover, plus that little extra in clue #5. Major publisher and a run that I'm very fond of.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-15-6.jpg)You don't know how HARD it's been NOT to use the right words here...
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
It is registering as being seen but not coming to the fore.
-
Gotcha! What a totally bizarre cover! http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=14776 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=14776)
-
And here we go! Clue #1
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/newgame3.png)
-
Gotcha! What a totally bizarre cover! http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=14776 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=14776)
Good show, Mark, you finally dug it up, even though it was hidden in plain sight.
It's one of my prize possessions, one that I will treasure forever.
I knew you could do it.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Bizarre cover for sure! Good one Jim.
:)
-
That's Roman emperor Caesar going for his gun!
-
Maybe, about the same age as Caesar that is for sure!(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/newgame1.png)but the wrong sex ... and Jim that was not an easy one ... but should have been with a cover like that!
-
Don't recognize a thing, Mark,
Another baffler.
(|:{>
-
And we move swiftly on to Clue #3 (http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/newgame2.png)
-
Crackajack Funnies #40 http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=14661
Read that not too long ago & recognized the face.
Guess that means Owl have to find a cover & put up clues. ???
-
Well done!
And my next clue I was going to throw in a "wise crack"
-
Well let's see if I can do this properly.
Definitely a pre-code comic.
No fair looking at the file name. ;)
-
Jeez, probably a crime book.
But they all look the same...
This is gonna be hard, I guess.
-
Got it, SS!
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=9310 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=9310)
Don't follow the link if you want to keep playing and SS can add more hints for Mark :-\
Good choice, SuperScrounge
(|:{>
-
Quick find Jim. Do you have a Mark Waid cover mind?
-
Not sure what a "Mark Waid cover mind" is, Jim,
but I assure you that I do NOT have one. When I looked at that image, what I "saw" was a) an old comic style [pre-1940] and b) a Centaur-ish "feel" to the pose and content.
Given the two, it didn't take long to find it. I can usually include or eliminate large swathes of comics at a "glance" - just from what I own and what I've seen. I don't have an image of the cover, just the parameters of the style and content.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Wow! That was fast! ???
-
Yep a bit too fast if you ask my opinion ... maybe I am not the only one cheating here, all a bit suspicious :)
-
I believe it is Mark Waid that if you give him the cover details from any DC comic he can tell you the issue? He may be able to that with more than DC but it was at the DC panel at Heroes Con that he performed.
-
Narf, I do know have such a mind. Period.
Gad, Mark, if there's a way to cheat at this game, I NEED to know it.
I think I can just narrow down the time and the company on a lot of images better than most. Then I look through those covers on GCD. Is that cheating? Or are we getting sour grapes served to us? Mark, I'm older and I own more comics than you. And I've internalized them in a completely different way than you. You'll beat me every time with obscure titles, but I see my side of the game as giving you as much information as I can of abstract portions of covers from less common issues of more mainstream titles: Treasure Comics, Air Fighters, Crime Fighting Detective, Soldiers of Fortune, White Indian, etc. I don't believe that these are obscure, but YMMV.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
ps: here's clue 1 from my next entry:
-
No I did not just see this comic when looking at issue 4 but I got a feel. I can not explain why certain things jump out as being a particular company. But I just felt that this was a Toby comic, I actually think it is the coloring.
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=6936
-
Next a smiling face from a very obscure book.
-
Nice job Narf, wow, that was a pretty wild cover too. Good one Jim.
:)
-
No I did not just see this comic when looking at issue 4 but I got a feel. I can not explain why certain things jump out as being a particular company. But I just felt that this was a Toby comic, I actually think it is the coloring.
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=6936
Bravo, Narf,
You're a hard man to fool. I'll think a bit more next time. Picking a title that we had just discussed off-line was perhaps not my wisest choice.
I'll look into the new one after our Sunday outing.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Yeah Jim I had not explored the series and that cover but I somehow got a Toby vibe. Here are some more happy faces.
-
Jim,
I was teasing you (yet again) and I am sorry, but sometimes it is a bit too tempting to light your touch paper. And YES I REALLY do cheat.
I know nothing about comics, I think I bought one when I was a kid 'cos it had a free ring that squirted water. Narf, Paw and Joe are the major comic brains behind CB+.
I just see the huge amount of public domain material that I can play with to make a site. PLUS it is VERY important to archive the books both from social and artistic aspects. I take this VERY seriously and it is a BIG responsibility.
But, it is also just too much fun!!
Regards,
Mark
-
Here are the rest of the faces
-
Jim,
I was teasing you (yet again) and I am sorry, but sometimes it is a bit too tempting to light your touch paper. And YES I REALLY do cheat.
Regards,
Mark
I knew you were teasing, Mark. I was giving Narf a serious answer when he was inquiring about my approach. Were you teasing about cheating, too? If I knew how, I'd definitely cheat, too. But I can't figure out a way to do it. What's the secret?
You seem to have a strange interpretation of my responses. "Light your touch paper" implies a hell of a lot more investment than I have in all this.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Simply not something I know, Narf.
Looks like a late '50s kids book - WAY out of my interest/experience range. You'll always catch me on stuff like this. And Mark's cheat sheet isn't too quick on these either.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I really cannot reveal my secrets ... but I can reveal http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=13753 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=13753)
-
So swiftly on to a not very helpful start I give you:
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/newgame3.jpg)hmm what is the genre?
-
Now I think Mark is cheating.
How could he possibly have found that totally bizarre and obscure imbecile MAGIC MANIKIN?!
Mark, are you hacking into our computers?
;)
And branching out (pun!) into new genres now?
-
Yeah. Tilliban,
if he'd only leaf.
;D
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Sorry the only way I am leafing is in a box .... talking of which
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/newgame4.jpg)
-
That was an easy one, Mark:
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=18043 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=18043)
Now I'LL think up a REALLY good one, just for you.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Maybe it won't be difficult, if your cheat engine is working, Mark,
but here's the first clue:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-17-1.jpg)It's from a long-running title. Good luck.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I found one that is close
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=4639
-
It's obvious that you need a tad more help, Narf,
so here's a little bit more of the counter top.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-17-2.jpg)which I think is a mighty big clue.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Okay, you want even MORE help, guys? Clue #3!
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-17-3.jpg)I'm the guy to give it to you straight. It's a CRIME comic. 1940s.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I was gonna suggest maybe a Lev Gleason crime book... still don't know the book.
-
Hmmmm....
(|:{>
-
Where exactly is that guy being shot?
Plus can everyone be on the lookout for James Spencer. Occupation truck driver and male nurse. Wanted for murder. There is a police reward!
-
Since Mark put one up for me I will put one up for him after he got Wanted 13.
A pretty generic gun in hand to start
-
Good one, Mark,
Still tight-lipped about your methodology? Am curious as to how you approach these.
Yours looks like it should be an Avon book, Narf,
but I can't find it and haven't the time to look elsewhere. I'll await the next clue.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Thanks Jim!
It's a combination of factors, some of which involve CB+ enhancements I am working on.
I have said enough!
-
Is this going to be John Henry vs the Steam Drill all over again?
Whoop that steel on down!
(|:{>
-
How about this two handed gun man
-
Got it, Narf!
http://www.comics.org/issue/175189/cover/4/ (http://www.comics.org/issue/175189/cover/4/)
Harder than I thought, but then I remembered those Fawcett painted covers. Whew!
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Change of pace on this one, guys.
Clue #1
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-18-1.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I had never heard of John Henry (I have read up on him now) I think Deep Blue v Kasparov would be a better analogy especially as Kasparov lived to fight another day!
-
One of my favorite Johnny Cash songs, for 1963, and you're making me feel real old here, Mark. I bought that album, Blood, Sweat and Tears, NEW from the Columbia Record Club and I still have it! And you'd not even heard of "John Henry". Sigh... I agree that "Deep Blue v Kasparov" is a better analogy, but in order for me to have used it, I would have had to look up [IBM computer chess human contest] on Google to even find out what to say. Double sigh.
Okay, use your "Deep Blue" wiles on this second clue:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-18-2.jpg)Whoop that cover on down...
(|:{>
-
It is picking at my brain. Which means someone else will probably get it before it pulls forward.
-
Nah, it'll be you, narf.
(|:{>
-
One more is all it's going to take, guys.
Clue #3. It's a funny animal title. 1950s.
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-18-3.jpg)Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
How about http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=13060 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=13060) (I got it on clue 2)
-
It would never have been me. I would never have been looking in the right place on that one.
-
Well the name John Henry rang a bell, but to me I thought it was a name for a male appendage. (nicely put Mark!)
Anyway in a very random and totally unrelated defense I have heard of Herb Caen and have a signed letter above my desk.
Right on with the next one I hope I haven't already done this! Also as I am feeling generous I'll give a clue it is not a horror title
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/dec1.png)
-
No horror?
I'm out of the picture, Mark ("Muggy-Doo") Warner!
-
Well done, Mark,
Damn your Deep Blue eyes!
I'll start thinking about this new one. Just me and my brain...
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Jim.
Firstly I remember now it's "John Thomas" that I was thinking about as a name that is used for male bits.
Mind you there are so many that vary from country to county I am sure you could write a book about them.
Well, as it is just you and your brain I thought I'd put this one up and also let you know it is not a jungle comic. But hang on! You are using a computer to do this I wonder which one? Are you an Apple guy?
-
No idea, Mark,
some teen title I would suppose. Looks kinda interesting, but not my best genre.
Nope, PC kinda guy. I run an Alienware M17x dual core i7 64 Bit lap(hah!)top with 8 GB of ram. My desktop is something else, but we won't go there. I have an Apple iPad and an iPod, but they're just for pictures and music. I was working on a file for the next issue of my magazine that was over a GB in Photoshop. Gots to whoop those bytes on down.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
An extremely tough one, Mark,
You are to be commended (and cursed).
But I got it in TWO, too.
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=12079 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=12079)
Now I have to get real tricky....
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Okay, Clue #1:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-19-1.jpg)and, in the tradition of recent hints, it's not a super-hero book.
(|:{>
-
Blimey you have some hardware there! I was giving some clues (computer make?) and also some of the other meanderings were a reference to the title. Rather clever I thought
-
Entirely TOO subtle for me, Mark,
"Winnie"= Windows? Oooookay...
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-19-2.jpg)I'm a picture kinda guy and I must confess to have never noticed the verbal clues you give until after you tell me about them (or after I've found the comic image).
Here's a second clue for you. Still not a super-hero comic.
(|:{>
-
No Dell=Computer and Winkle=... well let's just change the subject now.
I tell you what. Let's talk about Rin Tin Tin the world's most famous dog (see page 30) Bigbrain Billy and of course Hector.
-
See, you had to EXPLAIN it to me, Mark,
I would never have seen THAT connection, despite OWNING a Dell computer. While your clues may be too abstract, your skills at locating these covers is certainly not. For those who haven't made the connection (is anyone else even monitoring this thread?), the answer to my last quiz was http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=5565&page=1l][/url]
Parents' CALLING ALL BOYS #11
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I thought sure it was Henry Aldrich but I was obviously wrong. Mulitscene cover, tricky Jim.
-
Probably not my brightest idea to lead with the named continuing character head, narf,
and the multi-image aspect didn't seem to slow Mark down one iota.
Whatever happened to Brian? He started the game and then gradually disappeared. Still around, bminor?
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I think this one should be a challenge.
-
sure wish you could make your scans larger, narf.
I have trouble seeing things that small. What's preventing you making them bigger?
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I just do them at 100% and I could see it so I thought it was big enough. I will make the rest of the clues for this one at 3x
Here is a friend.
-
Thanks, narf.
What are you using to capture the pics? I can take a DCM cover and view at the width of my screen and it stays pretty sharp. Then I can do a screen capture and THAT stays pretty sharp. Like this:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-19-2b.jpg)which is probably three times the same-size view of the comic. I am curious as to what approach you are taking that blurs the images so much. Maybe a different technique might help...?
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Narf: "Quit shouting Bumpy! I know t's a bear! don't worry we won't hurt the little guy!"
Jim: Was that the start of a new one quiz? If so choosing Cisco Kid #1 a one shot from Baily Publishing Company really could be considered rather obscure!
-
Since Mark did not put the actual answer here is another clue in case someone wants to continue from there.
Jim, I tend to get in a hurry and not remember NOT to use the preview images from CB+. They are lower quality for quick loading and viewing. I will try to get my pics from the actual files. BTW: I am a proud owner of said Cisco Kid comic ;D
-
A new quiz! First clue and a bonus clue!
-
And to get caught up here (Among other things, I've been installing a new garage door opener today), Narf's is Poppo #7. I got it because Mark pointed it out without naming it. So, for the rest of us...
No, Mark, the Cisco Kid was just an example to Narf about scan size/clarity issues.
Your new one is a puzzlement and I'm unlikely to discover or know what it is.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I figured that you would have gotten it with the picture of Bumpy and the Biro art
-
Well, you made me feel bad Jim!
So here is a nice big image that should hopefully help your predicament and there is a bit of a visual clue in there as well
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/newdec3.jpg)
-
I hope that "made you feel bad" is some sort of hint, Mark,
as I have no intention of doing that (or any clue of how to go about it). Actually, I'm simply not that interested or knowledgeable about comics with bad art, so if you want to beat me at this game, just keep throwing up poorly drawn work like this and it'll go right by me every time.
And it's also pretty obvious that your cheat engine is superior to all the rest of us combined. Sort of takes the fun out of it.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I am not having much luck Mark
-
There have been NO verbal clues SO FAR in his one. I actually chose the cover 'cos I thought it was a bit quirky. And do you know what I think I have done a "Captain Easy" on you again. Purely by accident. I really ought to review my choices.
Hopefully these two will help
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/newdec4.jpg)(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/newdec5.jpg)PS: The cheat machine is about to be retired.
-
I've looked again a bit, Mark,
and I can't see it as an Ace title, nor
Ace
Ajax
ACG
Avon
Better
if it's Canadian, I say "eh"
Centaur
Charlton
Chesler
Columbia
Comic Media
Cupples and Leon
Dell
D.S.

Fox
if it's a Government Pamphlet, I say "eh, too"
Harvey
Hillman
Holyoke
I.W.
Key
Lev Gleason
ME
MLJ
Orbit
Parents
Quality
Spark
Star
Sterling
St. John
Story
Toby
Trojan
Youthful

nor Camera, Catholic, Consolidated, Crown, Cross, Croydon, Dearfield, Don Fortune, Great, Green, Lafayette, Nationwide, Premier, Leffingwell, Stanhall nor Superior.
In short, it doesn't seem to be any comic with which I'm familiar and, judging from the lack of anybody else participating, it's not something they've seen or are interested in either. Maybe it's just too tricky for me, but corner cases win the game but seem to lose the audience.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Oh I'm trying but even with all the clues I a can not find it
-
Well here is a nice big chunk. And in my defense I don't choose covers by how difficult they are. I go for things that look interesting. And in fact I have had to disregard a few I wanted to do as they were a bit off the beaten track.
Anyway as it happens, although the art may not be good, this is actually of a minor historical interest. A very early comic (second??) from an embryo company that certainly did come to employ great comic book artists. So actually if I had reviewed the comic, I probably would still have chosen it or issue #1 of the series for that reason. (But we are on "Captain Easy" territory which I also did not realize)
Lots of clues sprinkled!
-
And after looking a dozen different place I still can not find it
-
Oh dear! Um ... I am trying to kill this one off.
I promise if I ever win again (which is now highly unlikely with the cheat machine retired) I'll do a comic review before I put it up.
It is a strip reprint ...
-
I tried Argo and various Dells with no luck
-
Don't be grumpy, Jim.
Mark's showing us a fun cover, but none of us has a hint.
Happens.
-
It looks sorta familiar but I'm stumped.
-
Not sure is Jim is grumpy or not, but I am getting that way as I keep telling you what it is ... lol.
Plus, yes I really do think it is a fun cover and well worthy of a little attention. But, as I have already said a few times any future covers I'll review the comics before I post.
-
I have looked at Captain Easy and Wash Tubbs and their appearances.
-
I am not in the least bit mad or grumpy, Mark,
simply supremely disinterested and totally baffled by the cover, hints and all. I'm not about to invest effort and time into a game where I don't even care IF I know the answer. As I said once before, you credit me with WAY too much emotional involvement in these things. Right now my involvement is in re-caulking our shower room, installing a medicine cabinet in my bathroom (my Rx bottles have gotten out of hand), researching some old Timely comics with Hames Ware, working on the next issue of ImageS, helping John Benson proof a transcription of a decades-old interview with George Evans, and I just finished writing an introduction for a Phantom Lady reprint volume and installing a new electric garage door opener. And Karen just brought in the Christmas tree. Playing what's this obscure comic, when I've run through all the companies I know, is simply pretty low on the to do list.
And just for the real, official record, I GIVE UP. You can tell me/us and we can go on. You can even do the next one, too. Just that this one is going nowhere.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
You might not be grumpy Jim (I never said you were). But I am getting there, as I keep telling people what the title is!! I have mentioned it so many times notice the bold.
Blimey, you are busy that is a lot of multitasking going on there a very eclectic mix of chores. My mind is really only designed for one major task at a time. So, like you this is all a bit of fun, but what I have been up to and maybe a clue to how the cheat machine worked (past tense) will be revealed around the New Year period. It has taken months.
-
I know you think you're telling us something, Mark,
but the sad truth is that we're not getting it. Any chance you can just use your words?
Something about "review" I suppose, but GCD doesn't give any titles with that word earlier than 1972 and searching for it in DCM is pointless, it seems. Give it up, please.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=18992
It is all in the spelling. Very tricky Mark
-
Jim knows this artist. I often mistook him for someone else.
-
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=18992
It is all in the spelling. Very tricky Mark
Oh, thank you, narf,
I never would have gotten it nor would I ever have associated the book with St. John. Simply not on my radar screen.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I figured that you already have mine narrowed down Jim
-
I just noticed it, Narf,
I have to log in AND get on the Games Room topic in order to see your images. Looks sorta like Rocke Mastroserio circa 1958 to me. I'm lost in Timely circa 1948 right now, which means a lot of Pierce Rice and Chu Hing. I need to maintain my edge there.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
You've got me, narf.
I want it to be a Charlton, but the printing is too sophisticated. The style seems to me to be the late '50s and I don't know who else was doing this kind of western art post '55. A puzzlement.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Well done Narf!
BTW I think that having to be logged to see attached images is a forum setting. Yoc needs to tick "View attachments" on the guest permissions. (or not, as maybe there is a good reason why DCM has set it to off)
-
Ha Ha
I picked the picture to be easy but not too easy and seems to be working. I know Chu Hing from Green Turtle but was not aware that he stayed in comics that long.
Here is some more of the puzzle and a clue that will probably give it away to Jim. It has a different inker than penciler.
-
BTW I think that having to be logged to see attached images is a forum setting. Yoc needs to tick "View attachments" on the guest permissions. (or not, as maybe there is a good reason why DCM has set it to off)
I don't know about anything policy-wise, but I happen to like it. Makes it easier to check out what's happening "under the radar" from, say, the office.
-
big piece of the picture
-
I'm just not getting it, Narf,
I can't connect the style with a company. It's ATLAS-like, but they aren't allowed. Mark threw me with a book I'd never seen nor heard of and I didn't get it. You've tossed me one I probably know, but I can't conjure it up. Good choice, but maybe a hint would help...?
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Don't discount first impressions and it is not Bill Molno. Pretty good hints.
-
My first impression was Rocke Matroserio at Charlton circa 1958, Narf, and I looked again and don't see it. Unless it is some sneaky non-western. And you're not trying to tell me that this is supposed to be Bill Discount are you? Thought not. Still not making any progress. I'm stumped. Where are the other detectives in our midst?
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
I'm pretty much useless unless it's horror.
Keep those clues coming, please.
-
That was not the meaning of my clue Jim but good try at interpreting it. You can Pat yourself on the back Jim for having more of it Mastered than you may know. This face should keep you Sullying your art spotter rep ;)
-
I have nowhere else to look, Narf. I don't know. It's Mastroserio, I've always been pretty certain of that. Which places it between 1951 and 1959, since we don't go past '59 - and I would place it more in the later '50s based on how slick he's gotten. I thought it might be Charlton, but I think I've checked everywhere and besides the printing seems too sophisticated (the blue tint behind the parallel shading lines) to be what I remember. So, you got me. I don't know what company it might be and I have no intention of checking every western cover on DCM. Not enough hours in the day my friend.
Good job. No idea.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
It is Charlton
-
Well, more power to Charlton for the printing, Narf,
and I guess my eyes have simply failed me. I've gone through as many Charltons as I am going to, so unless someone else is looking for it, I concede defeat. Put me out of my misery and try another one. Thanks.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Using pen and paper I deduce it to be http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=15248 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=15248) Outlaws Of The West #16
New quiz starts with a pretty lady to brighten up our day
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/dec15-1.png)and I am sorry Tilliban it is not a horror :(
-
You were right Jim it was Mastroserio and if it had picked your memory, I mentioned some time ago that I would sometimes mistake Molno and Mastroserio because they both do very similar noses. I through in an inker clue with PAT yourself on the back MAStered and SULly. I thought it was rather clever.
-
Thank you, Mark,
I was stumped. I even got your Pat Masulli clue, Narf, I just couldn't find that cover. Don't know why. On the other hand, Mark:
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=17421 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=17421)
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Here's one with very little planning involved:
(http://www.bpib.com/temp/namethatcomic-21-1.jpg)Now back to the laundry and the shower and the grout and the tub. And folding clothes. Someone's coming in to replace FIVE windows on Thursday and I have to have everything both cleaned and accessible. I slept 9½ hours last night. I'm exhausted and still more to do.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Cheat says 64 pages and July .... I couldn't stop myself looking.
I think it is best if I stop playing this game :(
-
Everyone else has, Mark.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Not everyone but it looks like not enough of us to make it really fun.
-
I've been following along since the first one and have been mighty frustrated so many look familiar but other than one of them I've been stumped and just not telling everyone repeatedly.
I can see how Mark's 'cheat' would work but I don't think of it as that - just good detective work.
If you guys are having fun I hope you'll continue.
:)
-
I have surprised with some of the ones I have gotten so do not give up Yoc. Here is an explosive start to a new challeng.
-
It's the missile silo from Planet of the Apes!
...no?
-
No apes Yoc much worse. Let's see if Till joins in this one
-
That is just teasing, Narf!
::)
But I'm confused now.
What about Jim's running feet? (or better: a foot) - that reminds me of horror.
But need one more clue.
Is your silo, Narf, the same cover as that searchlight thing?
Which I can't connect to horror - yet!
Keep me going.
-
That wold be a prototype happy face used in early Watchmen sketches.
So it's 'Planet of the Watchmen'
...no?
-
Ah ... it's not sci-fi! It's a horror.
That is not cheating to deduce that :)
-
I think Mark already got Jim's.
The two pics are from the same cover and Mark is NOT ALLOWED to cheat. The line between the worlds of horror and science fiction are often blurred.
Let me give you all a hand.
-
Sorry, feeling dazzled.
I think I've never seen narf's cover.
???
-
The poor guy that goes with the hand, I figure Tilliban may be having some difficulty because he is not from the USA
-
Right, I've no idea.
-
If this piece does not do nothing in the world will.
-
Cool clue!
I don't know what it is but it's intrigued me.
-
I am surprised no one has gotten it yet. I checked and the comic is not forbidden here and only on CB+. A long running title from a significant publisher
-
So it's gotta be something CODE-APPROVED (yeccchh!), right?
So I searched books from ACG, but can't still find it!
Arrrgghh.
I am NOT familiar with code-approved books...
-
does that mean that the comic is only posted on CB+, Nrarf?
If you recall the rules of the games "A small segment of the cover of the comic will be posted along with a word hint. ... The comic will always be one that is on DCM."
(|:{>
-
No Jim it is here not only on CB+ and the cover does not carry the code approval label in 1954 hope the info from a bald man helps.
-
O my I really am in a dilemma .. Jim has given you a major clue!
But I am sat on the naughty chair and still being naughty.
-
Here is most of the cover together
-
Wild cover for sure. Anyone?
-
Sorry, never seen this before.
And I don't know who the "bald man" is.
Why is Mark in the naughty chair - and not allowed to solve this mystery?
-
Because Mark has a cheat machine that allows him to get all the answers and not give anyone else a chance.
I can not give you much more of the cover without giving away the name. So if you check my picture in my avatar you can see who one of the bald men is and it was a clue as Bald is credited as the cover artist. I would say there are nearly 34 clues that I have given including exactly what comic it is.
-
Jayyyysis Christ!
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=4192
And I had been looking for ACG and even Ken Bald all the time.
I had "tomatoes on my eyes" (German saying).
-
Finally! Good show, Tiliban.
Now YOU get to do one.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Yes, I will.
How about a change of scenery?
Choosing this detail - a wildly bearded bad guy.
And the clue is:
Nothing about Chistmas whatsoever!
-
I was really surprised that this took so long. The fun part was trying to come up with clues. Here are all the hints for those who may have missed them.
NOT ALLOWED=Forbidden
Tilliban may be having some difficulty because he is not from the USA= from ACG
nothing in the world=WORLD
not forbidden here and only on CB+. A long running title from a significant publisher=FORBIDDEN+
1954 hope the info from a bald
34 clues= issue 34
-
ah - I've never collected that publisher. Neat cover!
Great choice Narf. :)
I just read the story. Nicely done. The end was unexpected.
-
You're too good to us, Narf.
Showering us with clues.
Drowning us in clues.
Jim informs me via private mail that he already got my new riddle.
From the first clue, the old devil.
(That is no clue, people, just stating the facts)
For the rest of you, here's a second one.
Another bad guy, looking on.
-
I'll be offline for the next 20 hours or so.
On my way to Frankfurt where I'll be giving a comedic performance.
I leave you with clue #3.
A gentleman in dire distress.
Feel free to solve the mystery...
-
Break a leg T.
I'm constantly niggled on these - they look familiar but that's as far as I get.
*sigh*
-
Those Pirates can do a lot of damage by the third issue can't they
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=1387
-
A ladies hat for you gentlemen
-
Thanks Narf. That was entirely new to me.
-
At last the woman with the hat. Tried to find a better copy of the cover from GCD the one here is not the best.
-
Jim will know the artist. Here is a concerned gentleman
-
Intriguing cover motif!
Can't find it though.
Hafta see more.
-
I got it! And legally!
Bizarre .. I though that it might be the Scarlet Pimpernel ... don't ask me why ,,, so went to stories By Famous Authors and it wasn't ... BUT guess who was there Scaramouche! http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=15123 (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=15123)
Anyway here we go with a new one.
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/xmas1.png)Also as it is nearly Christmas here is a bonus and two verbal clues .... it is not a romance and tilliban may get this first
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/xmas2.png)
-
Thanks Mark. I would never have gotten that one.
-
Too kind, Mark.
But am currently at loss.
I guess it's not part of the strict horror canon...
-
O think it is. It must be one you know
(http://comicbookplus.com/images/game1/xmas3.png)Here is the next image which is the third one. I guess from that you can tell it's precode
-
Of course.
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/preview/index.php?did=16013
I had that Avison vibe and had looked at Harvey - but missed it.
Because your details are so cutely MINUTE.
Lemme browse for a next mystery cover ....
-
O no, it's snowing again on my computer screen.
Must be christmas...
:D
I'm choosing this first clue for a new round of game.
Think it's fairly easy, but the detail is misleading in a nice kinda way...
See for yourself:
-
I thought Ken Shannon but it's not...
-
You might just think that, Yoc.
Next clue - the guys our man is supposed to handle.
-
Meet Judy, folks.
With this cover detail I'll be signing off.
Wife's cooking dinner, daughter is commandeering me around to install her christmas presents.
Merry Christmas everyone!
-
Nice Snard.
Now by rights you are to supply the next cover.
-
Glad you joined in Snard
-
Haha, glad you caught it, Snard.
Wasn't that wholesome fun?
Thinking this may be a crime or thriller title - and then it's a bleeding romance book.
Reminds me of the time I ran from the law, dragging teenage babes behind me...
Kidding, of course.
-
(or is he??)
;)
-
It was the teen-age babes dragging him that really happened in his days as a heart throb
-
Let's start this back up everybody!!!
Its a good one!!!!
-
coloring looks a little familiar
-
Reminded me of the "Daily Planet" logo.
But that's DC stuff and not in public domain.
More! Show us more.
-
I am not going to give another clue, just yet....
It is a very memorable cover though!!!
-
Good clue. No idea. I'm flabbergasted. To say the least...
-
I think it is someone on a plane and can see part of the word Manhattan
-
This clue is out of this world!!!
-
how about this...
-
this is it...

:(
Point is you will only recognize something you've seen before.
I'd never seen this cover - it's great. Thanks for showing me.
-
Dang, I knew that one.
-
Is he saving her or kidnapping her?
-
I'm guessing the later.
-
How about this one?
-
I've got tiny bell ringing but it's not more than that.
-
no pics, this is knowledge based (no cheating by using google, etc) if no reply within 24 hrs of this post, I'll provide the answer:
What was the 1st comic to be first released exclusively to Comic Shops? (not news stands, other stores, etc)
-
I think it was Dazzler #1 no?
-
Yup :D

Gee, the ol single memory cell manged to get one right.
Now what was the first Baxter paper (and thus over priced) comic?
That one I can't recall but it was around the same time as the Dazzler.

well at first I was thrown off because you did not capitalize 'paper', thus putting emphasis on the "paper comic" part which really had me scratching my head, because I was thinking: "In the early '80s what else besides 'paper' would a comic be published on?"
I confess to having to look it up, as my only association of 'Baxter' to comics is the Baxter Building.
I know the answer now (It's not Elektra), but I won't say to let someone else chime in.
I can say That I have one of these though, The Elektra Saga. Found it used, near mint for $5 at a local shop.
-
I believe it was Marvel Fanfare #1?!!
B.
-
Really? Hmm. I thought it was something else a bit earlier but I can't say for sure. Just a feeling. I did but the Fanfare being a Mike Golden and X-Men fan at the time.
I remember vividly being super mad they'd force the thing down our throats and bump the prices yet again.

-
Hint, It's a DC book
Marvel Fanfare Was not printed on Baxter
-
Really? Wasn't Fanfare on some kind of special stock? Perhaps cover stock for the interiors? I remember the colouring being very rich the entire book like it was on Baxter.
I'm stumped K. I wasn't a DC fan at this point in time so I'll never guess it.
-
Well, according to the Grand Comics Database it would the Brazilian comic Perry - Nosso Homem no Espaço #1 in 1975. (Assuming the indexer properly identified the paper, of course.)
1981 is shown as the first year for American comics with Baxter paper, some bubblegum giveaways, publishers Ken Pierce, Marvel & Pacific, but no DC until the end of 1982.
Be funny if it turned out the first American comic using Baxter stock was just a bubblegum giveaway. ;)
-
The source I was going with said Camelot 3000
were those bubble gum comics per chance these?

First comic book art of Jim Starlin at Marvel Comics. Remember please no googling...

Nope, don't recall that one now. A Hulk?
-
Hmmm. maybe Avengers #106?
-
Keep on guessing. It is not what you might think!
-
An issue of Iron Man?
-
Right, I can't recall which though.
-
I remember Iron Man #55 well, Starlins first art on Iron Man, introduction of Thanos, Drax the Destroyer, etc.
But, alas, it is not his first Marvel work.
