Title: Professionals Obituaries
Post by: John C on February 22, 2011, 03:53:29 PM
The news could be more pleasant, but we've lost Joanne Siegel during the week and Dwayne McDuffie today.  Hopefully, the work both of them started (the Superman rights and introducing minorities to comics, respectively) will continue, rather than end up a footnote.

I knew about Joanne Seigel's death but this is the first that I had heard about Dwayne McDuffie. The second death I find very unexpected.

What can be said? Bless them both.

While I'm not a huge fan of Kurt Busiek's, his comments regarding McDuffie seemed somehow worth repeating.

"When I first met Dwayne, he was campaigning against the name 'Black Thrasher' in the NEW WARRIORS pitch, and doing a survey of what percentage of male African-American superhero characters at Marvel rode skateboards or dressed like poultry. It wasn't a low number."

Is it wrong that I want to see that list...?

There was so much more than that FF style, narf. He did begin that way, but quickly moved on. That echo was primarily the result of requests by art directors to mimic Frazetta. Check out the variety and sheer scope of ability here:

Jones was very much a talent. To me I still can not get past my first notice of the work being "like" Frazetta but not as much detail. Jones always looked like an impressionistic version of a realistic painter. I know my artist taste is unrefined but I always considered the realistic painter as the more talented. I know the reasons that is not always the case but that is how it registers to me. Not to take away from Jones some great stuff. Beautiful Idyll statue. Enjoyed your retrospective Jim

Not a comic creator, but Michael Hart was (or should have been) near and dear to all our hearts, here:

http://www.teleread.com/paul-biba/michael-s-hart-founder-of-project-gutenberg-has-died/

It could very well be that, without Project Gutenberg's example, we wouldn't see sites like this, the Petrucci Music Library (imslp.us and imslp.org), MusOpen, and probably a bunch of others I'm forgetting that make their name on freely supplying public domain material to a large community.

Before reading his book I thought that the only two comics publishers in the USA during the Golden Age were National and Timely but his book helped open my young eyes to the bigger picture.

Title: Re: Obituaries

Yet another legend is lost forever.

Aside from Captain America and Bucky, I keep thinking to all of the great characters that the Simon/Kirby team either created or helped guide through different periods of the Golden Age -- Newsboy Legion and the Guardian, Sandman and Sandy, Stuntman, Manhunter, Fighting American and Speedboy, the 1950's Shield, the Fly... :(

I'm so sorry that they are now both gone. But at least they've left behind a wealth of outstanding material for future generations to enjoy. Comics would never have been the same without them.
Title: Re: Obituaries
Post by: vaillant on December 22, 2011, 03:37:56 PM
Not to mention "Brother Power the Geek" and "Prez", absolutely original.
I was very saddened at first, but we must say Simon lived an admirably long life, and now him and Jack are reunited! ;)

As experienced writers, both Kirby and Simon dealt with the late 1960s and 1970s youth feelings and so-called "counterculture" in an absolutely original way.
Kirby produced his 4th World (where the most interesting allusions to "flower power" are done in Jimmy Olsen and the Forever People) but he would also keep on a very peculiar exploration in Kamandi, and some experimental magazines he did.
Title: Re: Obituaries

Title: Re: Obituaries
Post by: vaillant on December 24, 2011, 02:12:31 PM
Well, I am not making a question of appreciation according to taste, and I have yet to read Prez, I was just suggesting that what Joe & Jack did was undoubtedly original. More or less accomplished, but genuinely original, and – as Jack would have put it – "respectful".
A rare quality among comic book writers, today…  ;)

From Steven Rowe
Another old publisher / editor, Muarice Rosenfield (and it is field and not feld) died this summer.
He was an editor and writer for Feature-Crestwood-Prize in the early 1940s, and had his finger in
Brookwood (a pre-Harvey title).  His father and Uncle were also in the comics-cheap periodical
buisness - and his son and grandson continue the tradition (but not comics).
Title: Re: Obituaries
Post by: Yoc on January 04, 2012, 09:18:27 AM
Thanks for keeping us informed Narf.
Stanley P. Morse of course did some of the most notorious pre-code horror books in the 50s.
He's quoted by David Hajdu in The Ten-Cent Plague as saying “No one complained, so we gave the people what they wanted until they started complaining about it.” and this one that really paints him a bad light - “I don’t know what the hell I published. I never knew. I never read the things. I never cared.”

and this one that really paints him a bad light - “I don’t know what the hell I published. I never knew. I never read the things. I never cared.”

I don't think that "paints him in a bad light", it simply makes him seem like a businessman, which is what he was.  Today's comic industry could use a few people like him.
Title: Re: Obituaries

Title: Re: Obituaries
Post by: John C on January 04, 2012, 04:14:45 PM
I don't see why it'd be so bad.  Happy customers and happy employees?  That's where everybody wants to be.  A statement like that usually comes from someone who runs things by sales number and probably by knowing the personalities of his people.

To me, I see the decline in quality (and readership) as being related to when the businesspeople start referring to themselves as fans.  I suspect it's hard to think rationally about a title when your favorite character might need canceling.

Re. Jean Giraud.  I've just seen the notice on Comics UK and commented that it's rather depressing how many comics creators are leaving us. Because of an interest in European comics, I've always been aware of his work and, although it didn't appeal to enough to collect, I have read a fair bit of it and it is powerful, strong, well crafted material. tilliban, I'd be close to agreeing with you on Blueberry.  Yes, I think he was a giant of the comics world.

Ray was probably...no, definitely...my favorite author when I was growing up.  I collected his works as fervently as I did any comic books.  Met the man at my first San Diego con and the only thing I had for him to autograph was an old ish of ASTOUNDING, in which he'd had a short-short story pubbed in the fannish slush-pile section at the back.  He looked at it and went, "Oh my God...", but still autographed it anyway.  Live on, Ray.

Harry was interviewed about his time in comics in Graphic Story Magazine #15, (Summer 1973)

I really liked Rodriguez's work in the "underground comics." His Trashman character was a bastard son of conventional comics, but his real genius came out in things like "Captain Pissgum and his Perverted Pirates. He was an original and I doubt we'll see another like him.

Maybe a little further afield than usual, but since SOPA/PIPA, the Internet Archive (where RECAP is hosted), and other issues are wrapped up in here (and the political prediction is a great read), it's worth mentioning that Aaron Swartz committed suicide last night, age 26.

http://boingboing.net/2013/01/12/rip-aaron-swartz.html

I had no idea all those projects were connected by one person, shockingly young (I always dismissed him as "that Reddit guy," myself, and I totally don't "get" Reddit).  And that he was apparently hounded for the past months over making public domain content available to people should give us all a little pause.

Before this obit I did not know who Aaron Swartz was. Now he is a hero. What he would have accomplish could have completely upset the good old boy corrupt government system. The powers that be will not allow major changes. Just look at how they sunk Ross Perot and Herman Cain when it looked like they might have a chance. Regardless of your political bent, everyone knows that either of these two would have radically upset the system. We the people keep getting screwed. Swartz was on our side.
Title: Re: Obituaries
Post by: John C on January 12, 2013, 02:40:01 PM
I'm less sure about Cain (he was too "homespun" for a major party to take him seriously, and I think he was chosen specifically to make the other clowns seem more electable; not to imply a racist agenda, but it seems like the Democrats usually use Jesse "Marble Mouth" Jackson or Al Sharpton for the same purpose), but that's a debate we can have in private if you want, and I largely agree on (any) third-party candidates.

I should mention, by the way, that if he did it, Swartz almost certainly should have been punished for what amounts to criminal trespass or breaking and entering into the room where he plugged his computer into the network.  But we shouldn't be talking about years in legal Hell to bankrupt him before the case starts, plus a lifetime of incarceration hanging over his head if he loses.

But yes, "hero" works on quite a few levels.  On top of disruptive politics, as stories come out, I'm finding it surprising how many tools I use (Markdown, for example, which if you need to do any writing, I recommend looking at it and Pandoc) were at least strongly influenced by him.
Title: Re: Obituaries

But Cain was shaking things up and getting noticed. I really think it was the Republicans who sunk him not the Dems
Title: Re: Obituaries
Post by: John C on January 13, 2013, 06:39:32 AM
I was unclear.  I meant that I suspect he was nominated by the Republicans in order to generate some interest in the press but largely make one of the other nominees look more mainstream.  But he wouldn't have become the candidate if only because a Republican agitating for what amounts to a VAT isn't going to be able to raise industry money.

The key is that the regional fund-raisers (he passed away in 2009, but a friend of the family married one of them a few years back) all supported Romney and have been selling him since 2008.  In the long term, no other Republican really had a chance, none of them were darlings of the money people.

He was best known for his work on "Flash", "Mystery in Space's Adam Strange" series with Murphy Anderson's inks and "Strange Adventures's Space Museum" series which he did his own inks on.
I loved reading all of them. May he rest in peace.

Just came up from Last Gasp on Facebook:

It is with great great sadness that I tell you that the wonderful cartoonist, artist, and story teller, Spain Rodriguez, passed this earth this morning of complications of cancer. He had just started home hospice and his wife and daughter were with him. Services are yet to be announced. He passed at the same time the prenumbral eclipse was happening, and like the earths shadow on the edges of the moon, his shadow was at the edges of the art world for over five decades. He changed and challeged the art and social world as we know it. More info to come.

I really liked Rodriguez's work in the "underground comics." His Trashman character was a bastard son of conventional comics, but his real genius came out in things like "Captain Pissgum and his Perverted Pirates. He was an original and I doubt we'll see another like him.

I'm a little late here, just started reading this thread, but I must make a correction: CAPT PISSGUMS was by S. Clay Wilson, not Spain Rodriguez. Clay has had his own serious issues but is still among the living. They're both great guys (I met them back in my 'underground' days) and had great impact on the field, Spain with his chunky style and political bent, and Clay for just being totally over-the-top mindblowing and tastebusting.

Carmine had a distinctive style that I always sought out.
His work always had a light airy touch to it.
In particular his Flash, Adam Strange and Elastic Man.

I had just started corresponding with Al Plastino, and found myself wishing I had done so sooner. When I read the news, I was floored and deeply saddened. We talked about his artwork, which he had donated to a national museum, where it had never been logged in, and he found this out when he encountered a description of his art as one of the auction items in the JFK memorabilia sale. I am hopeful that his family and his lawyer will be able to bring some justice to this issue, which would be a nice denoument to someone who gave me and so many others so much pleasure over the years.

I had a very nice session with Mr. Ayers at a convention about 2 years ago. He was there for a signing, and I brought a copy of a book (can't for the life of me remember which, but I think it was a Sgt Fury in which Dick drew both himself and Stan Lee into the story).  He wasn't/couldn't talk, but his daughter was with him, and he was happy, and so pleased to have fans attending to him.  Great guy!  So sad to hear of his passing.

Mike Allred was also there with his wife, Laura.  I love his '60's stylings, blended with his fun/cool sensibility.  They chatted with me for hours. VERY fun.

I'd like to say thank you to Irwin Hasen who passed away this week at 96. Along with his remarkable long career in comic books, comics strips and illustration he was one of the first artists to teach at The Kubert School. One of my fondest memories of Irwin was sitting between him and Tex Blaisdell at my graduation party while they talked about their careers and encouraged me as I was just beginning mine. U.S. readers were denied the chance to get to know Air Hawk back in the day. According to John Ryan American syndicates believed their customers had zero interest in adventures of non-Americans. Now, if you moved the strip to the U.S. southwest…

Flaming idiots!

Dixon, like most of the early comic creators Down Under, did it all, writing, art & lettering. Cat-Man, Phantom Commando, Tim Valor, the Crimson Comet, just to hit his main creations.

He's likely best know for his co-creation - Swamp Thing, and perhaps his work for Warren Magazines.  I believe the artwork for his edition of Frankenstein was his best work.  My condolences to his family.

Two of the underground comix greats, Jay Lynch and Skip Williamson, died within 11 days of each other this month (Jay on March 5th and Skip on March 16th). They founded one of the early seminal UG comix anthology books, Bijou Funnies, in 1968. They were originally part of the relatively short-lived "Satire Fandom" of the early '60s and had gag cartoons published in Kurtzman's Help! magazine in the Public Gallery section. I knew both of them and it is disorienting and sad to have them gone.  :-[

Got to agree with you, Darkmark. While I did not care for the show, Adam West was a class act.

I just wish so-called journalists would consult Google, or something. He was not the very first actor to portray Batman. He was the third live-action actor in the part. That is, if you ignore Batman's appearances on the Superman radio show.

I met Harlan at two conventions in St. Louis, Missouri, in the late 1960's. I did not happen to see his angry side.

WorldCon 1969 was in St. Louis. Harlan was there, as he had been at a smallish local S-F con the year before.

At St. Louis Con he was peddling a fanzine-like booklet titled "The Kong Papers." On the second day of the con (I think) they screened King Kong in the main meeting room.

When Kong killed the T-Rex, from the back of the room came a huge yell of "Yea Kong! Yea Kong!!" It was Harlan, of course.

And we just lost Steve Ditko.  Apparently he died several days ago, and even then he hadn't been discovered for a couple days.  A sad ending.

He might actually have died the same night as Ellison... That's one hell of a bad day for popular culture.

Russ Heath just died.

Oddly enough, I think my favorite story of his was "Plastic Sam" in MAD... which was his only work for EC comics proper, although he did a couple small pieces in the early Mad Magazine issues as well.

Thank you, Yoc.  It seems like we’re losing all our last few EC creators this year.  Harlan Ellison, Russ Heath, Nick Meglin all did a story or two, and Marie of course worked on more of the EC comics than anybody.  Is there anybody left who worked on the EC Comics themselves, not counting MAD?

With permission, Roy Thomas posted this to the Grand Comics Database list yesterday:

Hi List--
I won't go into details at this point, but I wanted to mention that one
of my oldest and dearest friends, Gary Friedrich, passed away last
night, from the effects of Parkison's, which he had had for several
years.  That and his near-total hearing loss had left him feeling
isolated in recent years, and his wife Jean seems content that he is
finally at peace.  As many of you will know, he did considerable work
for Marvel during the late 1960s and 1970s, and for Charlton in the
1960s, including a remembered run on SGT. FURY, stints on CAPTAIN
AMERICA, DAREDEVIL, SHIELD, and others, and of course the basic
concept/creation of the motorcycle-riding Ghost Rider at Marvel.  I'd
know Gary since I was in college and he still in high school, when he
came to work at the Palace Theatre in Jackson, MO, and some of my
happiest memories of our days in the rock band he founded circa 1962 and
which existed for a couple of years.

Best wishes,
Roy

R.I.P. Stan Lee.

What surprised me, after the news broke, was the extent of the coverage. The success of the Marvel movies made him something of a non-fan/collector household name. Before then, based on the brief live action TV show and various cartoons, all we might have seen/heard would have been, "Stan Lee, creator of Spider-Man has died."

I related to Spider-Man more than most. I graduated high school the same month he did. My first visit to my college campus coincided with his.

This has been one horrible month for fans of classic comic artists in addition to everything else.

I take at least some comfort that Uderzo, Fleishman, and Drucker all made it into their 90s; and at least in the cases of Uderzo and Drucker they were working until just a few years ago, and seemed to be doing well for their age from what we had heard.  Good lives, well lived, and in at least two cases (I'm not that familiar with Fleishman's work) artists that I first encountered and enjoyed back when I was in grade school in the 70's and never stopped appreciating.

At least one scan here comes in part from his collection:  the tearsheets I added to the Jingle Jangle #5 scan were bought from him many years ago.  I remember being surprised when I realized he was the seller.  I need to try and find it, he included a hand-written note with the purchase.
Title: Ian Kennedy R.I.P.
Post by: paw broon on February 08, 2022, 02:26:47 AM
The news of Ian Kennedy's passing has saddened the world of comics. This from comicbook.com:-

"British comic book artist Ian Kennedy, best known for his work on magazines like 2000 AD, has passed away. He was 89 years old. The news comes via the official 200 AD website, which had a remembrance of Kennedy, whose other work includes the 1980s relaunch of Dan Dare. Born in Dundee in 1932, Kennedy was began work as a trainee illustrator at DC Thomson & Co, where his first job was inking the black boxes of the crossword of the Sunday Post. He began freelancing with Amalgamated Press (later IPC) in 1954, working on titles like Hotspur, Adventure, Rover, Bunty, Judy, Wizard, Thriller Picture Library, and Air Ace. He went into semi-retirement in 1997, but has continued to do occasional covers.

"It is no hyperbole to describe Kennedy as a legend of British comics," 2000 AD said in their tribute. "With a career spanning more than seven decades, his meticulously detailed but dynamic work graced dozens of titles, from Hotspur to Bunty, from Commando to 2000 AD."

While his love for World War II and aircraft battles would remain an artistic signature of Kennedy's, over the course of his career, Kennedy had to evolve his work to meet current trends, adapting to the science-fiction comics of the '60s and beyond, including 2000 AD itself. There, he worked on strips that included Judge Dredd and M.A.C.H. 1. In the '80s, he would preside over the revival of Dan Dare in Eagle, as well as Blake's 7 and M.A.S.K.

"I'm not totally retired," Kennedy told The Courier in 2015. "I do the odd commission, and I still do the odd Commando cover. I do little aircraft features for their inside back cover, too, which is an interesting little exercise. I work maybe three or four mornings a week. I try not to work the full day now, as I'm easily tired. I find if I do maybe two or three hours at the drawing board, that's enough. I'm pretty lucky. It's nice still to be involved, in a small way. If you're in your cot with a pencil and paper, as I was, it's inborn. It's just something that I still enjoy doing. I'm lucky enough to be able to do it at my own pace. It's almost a therapy.""

A true giant of the hobby.  I'm incredibly saddened to hear of his passing.  He was a lovely man and a seriously talented creator.

Lou Mougin (darkmark)  11.27.1954 - 12.31.2022
We're very sad to hear long time member/supporter/contributor Lou Mougin recently passed away.

Lou was very, very passionate about our shared hobby and the site.  In the last while he was busy working more on his writing both in prose and for comics like Lucky Comics (Foxforce) and many others.  He posted some plugs for them here on the forums.  Lou did have some writing in Marvel so I think it's fitting that he's in this professional obits section.

He did several comics pro interviews in the early 90s with some big names that you can see on YouTube here:

A better picture of Lou is on this site:

While familiar with both names, in my ignorance I didn't realise it was the same person.
In my book, anyone who researches and documents obscure Superheroes and masked mystery men is a star.
I've spent decades digging but have come nowhere near Lou's quantity and quality of description.
A sad day.

I'd see scans on old comics I liked and it had been scanned by darkmark, lol. I was a beneficiary of him and the other scanners, preservationists, restorers of old comics and stories, keeping those old books & art stories out there. So, I was grateful as a fellow comics fan.

Craig Yoe reported on Facebook that Jim Vadeboncoeur Jr (JVJ) has passed

This was not unexpected, but still very sad.  JVJ's contribution to comics history was enormous, and that's without even considering his extreme generosity in letting us scan so many of his books for here and Comic Book Plus.

I'm proud to have been one of the JVJ scanning team.  In a few cases, he had duplicates of the books he sent out to scan, and simply gifted the extra copies to the scanners.  So I treasure my copy of Tales from the Great Book #3 as having been from his collection.  He will be enormously missed.

I can almost directly blame my love of DC comics on his work; I encountered his classic Justice League International run starting around issue #10 and instantly fell in love.  That lead me to his Legion run... I remember seeking out the Great Darkness Saga as some of the first back issues I ever looked for, for example.  And as time went on, he just did constantly entertaining work, able to snap from hilarious to serious with incredible ease.
