Paper upgrade of Hit Comics #14 is going up right now to the FTP. It's a coverless copy, so the ifc, ibc, and back cover are still fiche, and the front is from Heritage, but the rest of the book is complete.

Red Circle Comics #4 - Sabu Edition is going up right now.
This is a bit of an odd duck. The first page (story pages 2-3) is damaged, the only thing keeping this from being a "complete" book. Contents appear to be an unpublished issue of Fox's Sabu "Elephant Boy," wrapped in unused cover from Rural Home's Red Circle Comics #4.The book is complete other than the damaged page, even though page 1 of the first story is missing. Fox would have printed that on the inside front cover. Also, the last two pages of the book, which would have been advertisements, are blank newsprint, and thus have been left out of this scan. Variations of Red Circle Comics #4 exist with other Fox leftovers. One known variation features an issue of Dorothy Lamour Comics. The others are unknown.
Because it's a Fox remainder, it might be good to post in in both publishers.

Holyoke's Veri Best Sure Fire Comics #1 is going up right now. This reprints various stories from various issues of Captain Aero Comics, none of which have been posted. Also, I believe the contents are the same as Veri Best Sure Shot Comics. Both covers (from Heritage) are included in the upload and are identical except for the title.

MLJ's Super Duck Comics #42 is going up now with plenty of Al Fagaly goodness and some nice Archie house ads.
The cover (and price) attracted me to this book, having never read Super Duck before. I was a little disappointed by the first story, but the rest of the book, I thought, was fantastic! I hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I did!

A coverless paper copy of Whiz Comics #7 is going up now! I've been meaning to scan this one for a LONG time because it is so brittle. (Little more than a stack of paper really.) However, because of it being brittle, I've put it off, knowing that it would take longer than usual. All pages are readable, but there is damage to the artwork in the last two stories (Dr. Voodoo and Ibis). I've included the fiche copies of those stories, as well as the IFC and IBC. Front and back covers are from Heritage.

MLJ's Super Duck Comics #42 is going up now with plenty of Al Fagaly goodness and some nice Archie house ads.
The cover (and price) attracted me to this book, having never read Super Duck before. I was a little disappointed by the first story, but the rest of the book, I thought, was fantastic! I hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I did!

The first story is a bit weak, but the artwork is very interesting on the entire book. Fagely was a very imaginative artist, and I enjoyed the book. I just wondered why the decision was made to use the name "Super-Duck," although I don't have a better title to suggest.

Super Duck started out as, well, a SUPER Duck. When Jackpot Comics became Jolly Jingles with #10, Super Duck began as a parody of Superman. After the book was cancelled with #16, he received his own title. However, the costume and powers were dropped in favor of red lederhosen and a Barks-esque backdrop. It obviously worked since the title ran until 1960.
I had seen other issues of Super Duck before, and nearly bought them (something about that giant blue and white lettering on the red background really grabs me), but funny animals have never been high on my buy list. I always enjoy them, but they just seem like a low priority. I think I'll be a little more open to more Super Duck in the future.

Ah, then there was a reason for the seemingly misleading title. Come to think of it, some of the Atomic Mouse/Atomic Bunny stories from Charlton in the mid-fifties could have easily have been done without any critter in a costume. If I recall correctly, Mighty Mouse was able to walk the thin line between parody and super-heroic adventure and be both amusing and exciting but I can't think of any other super-critter who really pulled that difficult trick off routinely.

It's time to get near to Farr... I noticed we didn't have any issues of Dick Cole up, so one is being posted right now, Dick Cole #9!
Now, this is sort of an oddball book. It's a reprint of a reprint. This copy is the Accepted Publications 1958 reprint of Star Publications' Dick Cole #9 from 1950. Star's book was, in turn, a reprint of two Dick Cole stories from Blue Bolt and "Rip" Rory from Target Comics vol.1 no.2. Other than probably some different ads, Accepted's book has the same contents as Star's, so I've also included the Star covers from Heritage. And, as if the whole matter wasn't confusing enough, Accepted's cover for Dick Cole #9 was Star's cover for Dick Cole #8.

Will do. I was just trying to make it easier to categorize. Not so much for major titles like Whiz, but the "lesser" titles that sometimes require you to think, "now what publisher was this?"

Hi Eric, if there's a case like that please include the publishers name in the file name just as you did for the Accepted Pub. Dick Cole you just added. And I know you'll let us know any interesting stuff here on the forum. I've been adding your posts to the descriptions for each upload. Good info like that needs to be shared!

One of the first two Golden Age comics I ever bought (along with Atlas' Men in Action #3 - wish I could share that one...), is now posted!
Heroic Comics #85 features a cornucopia of artists from Sam Glanzman and H.G. Peter, to Ed Moore and Bill Walton. Among the typical war stories is the sad little tale of 13-year old Richard Tweddell, illustrated by Glanzman. This story has always stuck out to me, and is certainly the most memorable tale in the book.

I just did a count of my "text files", and it looks like I've scanned 47 books for this site now. (Including ones originally done for GAC and the ABPC newsgroup.) I'll have to start thinking of a special one to do for my 50th!!!

Fawcett's George Pal's Puppetoons #17 is up now! This is one instance where I think the comic adaptation was FAR better than the original film version. Some of the claymation Puppetoon shorts were just plain creepy. The comic on the other hand is fun and kinda cute.

Well, here we are, my 50th scan of a public domain book for either the ABPC newsgroup, GAC, or DCM! Actually, I’ve scanned a lot more for my old Golden Years site, but often I would just scan one story at a time as needed, not the whole book. Before we get to what I’ve actually scanned for this occasion, here’s a little bit of my scanning history.
Inspired by Bill Nolan’s Pure Excitement Comics, my first scanning efforts were the full issues of Target Comics vol.7 no.5 and Black Terror #16 for the “library” page of The Golden Years, which was primarily a Golden Age cover gallery site at the time. This was July, 2000, and these early scans were VERY poor quality, just 75dpi. My biggest concern was upload/download speed. My only image software at the time was Ulead’s PhotoImpact, which had no auto color correction, no "levels" controls, and painfully primitive tools compared to what I have now in Photoshop. Plus, I was only 16 years old at the time, and was learning as I went (both about scanning/image editing, and Golden Age comics). By August I was amassing a “large” collection of scans from other places online that I wanted to share on my site, so I borrowed Bill Nolan’s idea for an online reprint book and created “All-Amazing Comics” as a vehicle to share those stories. For the second issue I started incorporating my own scans, which helped spark my collection of Golden Age comics.
In 2001, I “borrowed” another idea from Bill Nolan, and began creating and selling CDs of comics besides posting my free online books. This caused me to upgrade my scanning practices, saving 150 dpi “master scans” in addition to what I used for AAC, and my other online books. I also had some better software, Corel Photo-Paint.
It wasn’t until about 2002, after a hard drive crash, that I began to scan full books rather than just a story at a time (although I still did that too), and more importantly, that I began backing up my master scans to CD. In 2003, I started sharing some of the books I scanned on the alt.binaries.pictures.comics newsgroup. Many of these would later wind up on GAC, and now here.
Eventually, All-Amazing Comics and my other books became too much. Prep. work wasn’t too bad, but I was having issues finding good storage space for the books online. I’ve drifted in and out of scanning since then, but it’s always been a love of mine. I can’t tell you how grateful I am for this site, and everybody who contributes to it. I’d love to have time to contribute more, but I’m just happy to be a small part of it, and share the books that I can.

At some point in this book’s history it suffered from moisture problems and the pages became “wavy.” A heavy book was placed on it when scanning to help flatten, but some waves are still noticeable. This a wonderful post, not only from the perspective of your evolution of involvement and practices, but also the chronicle of the pieces you have produced. I would love to see similar postings from some of the other scanners I admire (too numerous to name). Thanks! I guess I should have gone with my first instinct on "Love for Sale!" which was Elias (although I wouldn't have come up with Warren Kremer). But then I saw Avison was linked to Love Problems in '52, and some of the work in those two stories reminded me of some Green Hornet attributed to him. I don't believe I've ever seen anything by Sink on Hickey before, so I would have never spotted them, but they're on my radar now. Like I said, romance books aren't my forte.

I could see that. It looked familiar, especially the expressive eyes (something I associate with Powell), but nobody came to mind. The illo. in the text "Suspicious of Love" is nagging at me too, but again I can't place it. The woman almost looks like an Eisner-swipe to me in some ways, maybe that's it. I know I've seen a drawing similar...

Centerfold strip is by Bob Powell (don't know about "shop" here - looks pretty typical to me) and the text illo is by Sparling. If I can be blunt here: looking for "a similar drawing" is one of the best ways to drive yourself crazy. Looking for "HOW" someone draws is much more productive than trying to memorize "WHAT" they drew. IMHO and FWIW.

Hydroman, Man O'Metal, and Music Master had been religated to the back of the book, with just 6 pages each. However, Music Master managed to squeeze in a 7th in the form of a PSA drawn by Jimmy Thompson.

"Monkey Business on Wall St." is what I most strongly believe to be Plastino. "Tom Paine and His Mighty Pen" is one I thought was possibly Plastino, but was uncertain.
As for Quinlan, that was a goof that I didn't catch (but I'm glad you did). I was looking at True #54, seeing if I could I.D. any artists that did both issues, and saw a story I thought looked kind of like Quinlan ("Beloved Composer"). ZIP is fine by me. That's what I had been using, but it seemed like I was just about the only one, so I switched to RAR. Makes no difference to me either way.
Strange, the back cover was there when I opened the RAR file just now. I have no idea why it didn't show for you. There are 37 files, the 36 pages of the comic and its cover, and a .txt file. At any rate, I'm uploading a new ZIP file now.

"Monkey Business on Wall St." is what I most strongly believe to be Plastino. "Tom Paine and His Mighty Pen" is one I thought was possibly Plastino, but was uncertain.
As for Quinlan, that was a goof that I didn't catch (but I'm glad you did). I was looking at True #54, seeing if I could I.D. any artists that did both issues, and saw a story I thought looked kind of like Quinlan ("Beloved Composer"). I must have forgotten what I was looking at because I put him down as a possible for "Sheriff's Secret" in #53. I've removed him from my text file credits now, thanks for noticing!

Tom Paine and Monkey Business are both by Ernie Schroeder. I updated the entire issue for GCD. There's a lot more there. Sheriff's Secret is Lorence Bjorklund.
In #54, Beloved Composer is Corrine Boyd Dillon.
Plastino is definitely at True, but I've only seen him earlier than this. Haven't looked at the series for years, though, so I might be wrong.

You're right, I see it now. Monkey Business and Tom Paine looked very familiar to me, but I didn't think my spotting skills had gotten THAT rusty! Yikes!
The miscredit wasn't entirely without reason however. Plastino IS in the issue. He did (and signed) the "U.S." Royal ad on the inside front cover. I just remembered when I first got the book back at Christmas that Plastino did some work in there, but forgot what it was. Now how I could think Schroeder was Plastino...well that's just embarasing! :(

but I don't see any Ross Andru or Mike Surchorsky or John Daly. The second story is penciled by Ed Smalle, I think, and the third is definitely penciled by Gene Colan. I don't know who does "Tobacco Tom" and the last story is penciled by Art Peddy.

The Daly attribute was the one I was least certain of and almost removed it. I knew it looked familiar, and of the suspects presented in Who's Who, that was my best guess. I can see Peddy's facial expressions on the sheriff now that you point him out.
The Andru spot was my second least sure (thus the question mark for both of them). I've seen little of Andru or Colan from this period, so I'll take your word on it, but I still see things that remind me of Andru in the Silver Age.
As for Suchorsky, I probably should have question marked him too, but there were a few attributes that reminded me of his work, especially the boy's face in the third panel of page 2. I think it reminiscent of some of Suchorsky's Black Terror work. However, the more I look at it, the more I'm inclined to agree with you on this one too. I'm bothered by the stiffness of the action and lack of creative composition. It's also a little flat for Suchorsky who liked to play more with shadows than this artist.

Fawcett's Wow Comics #5 is up now!!!

January, 1942. This issue features 3 Mr. Scarlet stories, The Hunchback, Rick O'Shay, Jim Dolan, and Atom Blake. This is a coverless copy with the front and back covers from Heritage and the ifc and ibc from fiche.
This particular copy is interesting because of the stamp, "Greetings from Congressman TENEROWICZ," which is found on numerous pages throughout the book. Rudolph G. Tenerowicz (D-Michigan) served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1939-1943, and it's easy to picture one of his children, or the child of one of his staff members, getting bored in his office and playing with the stamp. A fascinating connection to the book's original owner.

Calling All Boys is correct and ready to upload. The others can be added as well if you want to do them. When I was finalizing Calling All Boys I noticed how much I was compressing the pages and how much artifacting was occurring. At first I thought something had become messed up in the Photoshop action that I use to batch compress and save, so I re-compressed Amazing Man, Minute Man, and Blue Beetle and re-uploaded them. Then I remembered that the compression level wasn't a mistake after all, that back when I recorded and first started using that action, people were posting much smaller scans here, and that setting was keeping in line with those file sizes. Nowadays, the ZIP file sizes for many 36 page books here are larger than those for my 68 pagers, so I have adjusted the compression accordingly. My new scans have a much smoother and more natural look, even though they are still heavily compressed from my raw files.
Calling All Boys is my new normal, and you are welcome to replace the others if you want to go to the trouble. I can re-compress past scans as well if you would like me to, but if it's too much trouble to replace them it's not a big deal. The artifacting seems to mainly be in the blacks and reds, and isn't so prominent that it hurts the quality of the scan that much. I think I started using Photoshop compression back with Atomic Rabbit #4 which would mean that there are at least 13 other scans that could be upgraded. Prior to that I was using Ulead's JPEG SmartSaver to compress files for web use. I don't know what they did different in their compression algorithms, but I was able to get less artifacting and smaller file sizes with that program than with Photoshop. Unfortunately the version I was using came with my first scanner back in 1998, and doesn't work on new 64-bit operating systems.

I hope I can explain this clearly enough. Back when I was using the Ulead JPEG SmartSaver, my compression level was 75% of the original. This produced something small enough to post and download reasonably quickly without too much loss of quality. I'm a big detail person, so I'm very picky about that sort of thing. I used this setting for the books on my Golden Years site, ABPC, and then when posting here. When I could see that the SmartSaver program would not work on a 64-bit system, I knew I had to figure something out with Photoshop and get in the habit of using it before I got a new computer and was forced to do so. For all the many good things about the program, efficient web compression doesn't seem to be one of them. At least not that I've found in comparison to Ulead's compression.
There isn't a direct comparison between the two compression systems either. In Photoshop if you are using basic JPEG saving (File>Save or File>Save As), you have a quality setting between 1 and 12, not like Ulead's percentage. Photoshop's "Save for Web" command (File>Save for Web) is closer to Ulead's program in that it uses percentage compression, but compressing at 75% with Photoshop's "Save for Web" results in MUCH larger files than Ulead's JPEG SmartSaver. To match the file size I was getting from Ulead, I had to use the "Save for Web" command in Photoshop with a quality setting of "3" and set for "optimized" compression. The resulting image was a little more degraded than with the SmartSaver, but it was acceptable at the time to keep from uploading books here that were too large in comparison to what everyone else was doing. Since I started using this new compression system, and have drifted away and come back here several times, people have started uploading larger files. Using a quality setting of "30" now seems to produce scans of comparable size to what others are doing and artifacting is either gone, or greatly reduced.
As for re-compressing and upgrading the older scans, it doesn't take long at all to do. Just a few minutes actually, and it's much easier than the old way with the SmartSaver. I just have to open all of the files in Photoshop, run the automated action on all of the open files (which then saves them to a folder I use as a staging area of sorts for uploading here). Then I just zip them up along with the text file and upload. Very easy. I was mostly worried about it being work for you having to replace all of those old scans. In addition, there are also many that I down-converted to 150 dpi that need upgrading. I really need to look at my old uploads and see what I have better scans of readily available. I'll wait until next week to start work on them so I don't bog you down and also so that they don't distract from the anniversary books that will be going up.

Now that we (thankfully) have all of the issues of that title, I was able to look over them and didn't find any of these stories in there. In fact, I was able to determine that the Captain Aero story precedes his story in Captain Aero Comics #15 and Alias X and Hammerhead Hawley both precede their stories in Captain Aero Comics #11.

Scanners like Len, DDB, BBoy and Brian haven't shown much interest in them and JVJ's list of books in his collection had just a handful of non-hero books. So yes, Please Do scan your other MLJ books when you have time!

A cover to cover Canadian upgrade is going up now, United States Fighting Air Force #6 from Superior Publishers Limited! This is a book I've had for years, but for some reason I never read it until yesterday. I think it came in a lot of books I bought on eBay, some of which were very brittle. I always thought of this as being brittle as well, thus I never take it out of its plastic. In reality, it's not brittle, other than the cover which is only slightly. Anyway, it was a pleasant surprise to read. All of the stories were pretty good, even if they are pretty politically incorrect. ;)

I've uploaded an incomplete different version of part of Exciting Comics #11 (NMS). I'll let you decide what to do with it. There are just 21 pages (Black Terror and The Sphinx), and they are slightly smaller than the GM scans up now, but there is no GM marker. You could put them up as is, or someone could use them to edit out the GM on the larger scans if they were so inclined. I think they came from a Yahoo group years ago, but I forget who uploaded them. I just thought I would share to help make the site a little more "GM" free.

I'm uploading a different version of Smash Comics #36 that I found online right now. Unknown scanner. Unfortunately it's only marginally better than the small scans we have now, but comparing several pages, I think it is slightly cleaner (i.e. fewer compression artifacts), so I thought it was worth uploading. It also has some curling at the spine that our current version doesn't have, so it's hard to say which scans are better to read. This book, and Smash #18, are still badly in need of better scans.

I also uploaded Hit Comics #39. It's the exact same scans as what we currently have, but slightly larger (by about 15%). Not any better other than that though. I'm not sure if someone up-sized these from what we have, or down-sized what we have from these. I'll leave it up to you Yoc as to what to do with them. Either way, it's another book that needs a true upgrade.

Actually, I believe the JVJ rangerhouse books were scanned originally at 600dpi

They are, sort of, but the book has been downsized to 300dpi. Actually the scans I got were 96dpi with 600dpi dimensions, I re-sampled them to 600, and then downsized to 300dpi.
I'm re-posting the book now. I uploaded the wrong version (uncompressed) here and at CB+ before which was over 100mb. The compressed one is 23.7mb.

Work and life has kept me busy for a little while, but I'm back with a new book...just not here. For those interested, I just uploaded Charlton's Six-Gun Heroes #58 to Comic Book Plus. Published with an August, 1960 cover date, it falls just outside of DCM's purview, but I thought I'd mention it here anyway for anyone like myself who follows this site more regularly. This book features Gunmaster's second appearance.

A "fixed" version of Superior's Super Western Funnies #4 is up in my FTP folder. It's the exact same scan, but less compressed. There was a period of time where the Photoshop action I use to compress my scans was somehow changed and produced WAY over-compressed images. I'll re-upload these scans as I run across them, but if anyone reading this sees any of my scans which look like they have an unusually small file size, please let me know. For instance, the version of this book currently on the site (scanned at 300dpi) is 10mb. The corrected compressed version is 29.9mb.

Inside front cover recreated from color version of the ad found in Wow Comics #14, fiche copy included for completion. No matching paper copy of the IBC ad could be found, but a very close copy from Exciting Comics #27 has been included as a bonus for readability. Captain Marvel and Spy Smasher have two-page opening spreads which have been combined into a single image. The individual pages are included after the rest of the book for those who would rather read it that way. Featuring Captain Marvel, Spy Smasher, Golden Arrow, Lance O'Casey, and Ibis the Invincible!

1919 - 600 dpi cover to cover scan. Originally photographed for the 5th anniversary of the Digital Comic Museum, this book is now fully scanned! It is the oldest comic in my collection, and one of my earliest Golden Age purchases bought back in 2000 or 2001 while I was still in high school! However, it was too big for a regular scanner and is very delicate. Now, with slow and careful work, it has been scanned at 600dpi on an A3 scanner and presented in it's full-size.

This one is a little different. St. John's House of Terror #1 is now up in my FTP. This scan comes in three versions, original 3-D, black and white from the red plate, and black and white from the blue plate.
