While I don't have a source of material to scan, I did come across a great blog posting at Golden Age Comicbook Stories blog of some stories from Youthful's Chilling Tales, issues 13 & 15, and have compiled and uploaded these. Great stuff with Matt Fox covers.
Hope you like them.
-
Thanks bb, I updated one of them with a second story.
DoorTree runs a fantastic blog there. Please be sure to continue giving him full credit when you upload anything from there.
I even include a URL when I upload from him. I wish he'd join DCM.
Thanks again,
-Yoc
-
Sweet, Yoc...I will grab your augmented post. I love that DoorTree has a mix of comic and painterly stuff, very heavily leaning to Art Nouveau. Gorgeous stuff by Maxfield Parish, Wyeth, and others.
-
My first contribution where it is a solo venture:
Novelty's Target Comics v4 01, coming in at a hefty 58Mb...sorry about that. In my exuberance at the quality, I couldn't bring myself to compress it more. Hope you like it.
This is the first of a handful of books I will be bringing. The others are:
- Charleton's Battlefield Action v2 #20, July 1958
- Hillman's Real Clue Crime Stories v7 #11, Jan 1953
- Fawcett's Captain Midnight #53, July 1947
I also got some Lev Gleason's Daredevils, which I see are all on-site. I will make sure they are c2c.
And last but not least, I get a Fiction House Jumbo #74, which I believe I will scan to improve what is already on site.
-
Thanks for the upload Builder, we're looking forward to those coming books from you.
Anyway Novelty's Target Comics v4 01 is now available for downloading everyone.
Geo
-
Many thanx for the Target! :o
-
Indeed, that one hit the spot. ;)

Just sent the following to builderboy for scanning.

Welcome to the project, bb. (|:{>
-
JVJ didn't mention it, but he also gave me a primer in Photoshop restoration techniques. Huge thanks, JVJ, that was GREAT!
I am terribly excited about the books coming in!
-
A hearty Congrats to BB on joining the ranks of the JVJ Scanners!!
:D
I've removed those sent to BB from the JVJ Wanted List which REALLY needs to be updated!
-
BB has already been involved as a scan editor so he has just increased his work load.
-
Hey, All!
Got back from a wedding in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area today (very beautiful place, BTW) to find Jim's box waiting for me. Holy Hannah, what box-load of goodies! Thanks for the library loan, JVJ.
Narf had indicated that somebody at DCM was a fan of Red Rabbit, so tonight, in honor of narf's request and of the arrival of JVJ's box, I hustled and wrapped up my scan of Red Rabbit Comics #15 to clear the decks for JVJ scanning.
Using techniques from a recent JVJ editing tutorial, I think these might be my cleanest edits yet. I hope I put it in the right place....Small Press. I saw Foxy Fagan there, but no other issues of RR, of which there are a half dozen floating around.
nice to be back! ;D
-
That is fine Builder, (putting it in small press area, we can always move it if necessary). And thanks for the upload, (it's much appreciated) and if you run into any of the others "floating around" you talked about, just upload them when you do. Thanks again for you latest upload.
Geo
-
Thanks BB
I can only imagine the joy of opening a box for JVJ. I'm filled with envy though the thought of scanning that many books also fills me with fear.
:)
-
An upload tonight of an upgrade to a book already on-site: Fiction House's Jungle Comics #12.
I have added to ae660's 67 pages with the missing page and an alternate cover. In honor of the ongoing conversations about restoration of color when editing a book (quite a brisk topic with some very well stated positions...you should seek it out for a good read!), and in deference to ae660's work, I have not restored the colors on the infill page, so it won't be a shocking as Jungle Comics #11 recently was.
However, I am scanning JVJ's copy of #12 c2c, and will return with an alternate look at a restored product....later. But first, I will try to get the balance of JVJ's box scanned. Next up will be Jungle Comics #42, c2c. Give me a little time...I am slow and deliberate. :-[
-
Sounds like a good plan BB!
Len was hoping you'd do Wings 17 & Movie 2 among the first.
(hint hint ;) )
-Yoc
-
I will definitely move them up in the priority list, Yoc. Len has been taking very good care of us, so Wings 17 after a little more Jungle Lovin'.
-
It's up, and its a goodie: Fiction House's Jungle Comics #042. Some gorgeous art, combined with JVJ's beautiful copy, and some BB editing magic, and I think we have a winner.
With all the discussion recently about restored color vs. color-as-is, I want everybody to know that, even though I am in the restoration camp, JVJ has given me a process of editing that completely leaves the original colors in tact.
In fact, I could easily post a restored AND a non-restored color copy. Any interest in that?
Anywho, after the scan/edit seige to bring you this piece, I will attempt to placate my scanning bretheren. Next up: Wings Comic #017 for Len, who brings us so much good stuff that I can never repay.
-
Thank You BB for the upload, got to love those jungle books.
Geo
-
Good work BB, keep 'em flying!
;)

Here's a new one from Builderboy, (thanks Builder for it):
The Spirit #3 in the Fiction House section.
Available for downloading from our DCM site now!
Be sure to be on the outlook for 'The Spirit' #4 & 5 FH coming soon from Builderboy!!!
Geo
-
Geo,
Many thanks for getting Spirit 03 up for me. #'s 4 & 5 will be up tonight. Plus, after some time to compile it, I will be posting a raw version of Wings Comics #17. An edited version will follow down-stream, but I think this will satisfy many, who prefer the un-restored editions of the books.
-Builderboy
-
Now up: Fiction House's The Spirit 004 and 005!
-
Also up: Fiction House's Jungle Comics #12, an unrestored c2c 68-page scan from the JVJ collection.
Mods, please take down the current book you have up, which is a watermarked Electro Comics version of the same issue.
I will return to this book in the upcoming months and publish a restored version after I have completed scanning the big ol' box that JVJ shipped me. By the time I am done, it'll be 2148 pages scanned. I am a mere 368 pages in. Yikes!

Thanks Builder for the up's and not a problem getting Spirit #3 up for you.
So folks, you know where to go to get them, so why are you hanging around here then? Read on...
Geo

Thanks very much BB!
:)
-
Len was hoping you'd do Wings 17 & Movie 2 among the first.
(hint hint ;) )
-Yoc
Well, he gets part of his wish tonight, Yoc. A partially edited (full scan) version of Fiction House's Wings Comics 17. I was going to release it completely raw, but some of the images called to me, and I ended up editing about 20 of the 68. I will come back to it after much more scanning is done.
Enjoy! I hope Len likes it.
-
Thanks Builder, look forward to the finish product when you get to it too.
Geo
-
Thanks BB, but I'm sure everyone would be willing to wait for your complete edit if you'd rather release them finished.
Knowing they are on the way makes the wait easy to handle when you know the finished product will look so nice.
Congrats on the edits btw, they look lovely!
:)
-
:P Many thanks for the Wings 17!
I hate to say this after all your work, but the 'natural-colo(u)r' raw scans are nicer (and the somewhat smaller file-sizes are better too)
-
FreddyFly, I know that is your position on these things, and there is no right or wrong. The beauty of the editing method used is that I can still access the raw images.
If you like, I could post a 100% raw version of the book. What do you think, Yoc?
-
OK...moving on, Fiction House's War Birds #01, completing the series.
-
Thank you kind sir for the upload.
Geo
-
Whatever you decide BB.
I like the edit version but can see the appeal of the raw scans too.
:)
Thanks for the War Birds. That completes the run!
-
here's another...complete edits this time...another of JVJ's Fiction House treasures...Rangers Comics #42. It includes some beautiful work by Bob Lubbers on Firehair, George Evans on Tiger Man, as well as some prime uncredited Iger Shop work on Glory Forbes. Eye-poppin'! Hope you likey.
-
Thank you Builderboy for your latest up of Ranger Comics #42, it is much appreciated.
Geo
-
Nicely done BB, thanks!
:D
-
...still on a Fiction House run (I am trying to vary the offerings from jungle to aviation, etc so to keep the genres well represented), Wings Comics 009, a paper c2c scan to supplement the fiche copy on site. A little weighty at 50-something Mb, this thing is pure gorgeous, and I am not talking about my editing! ::)
The colors and art on this thing are poke-your-eyes-out powerful. I was convince by narf, Geo and JVJ to step up to 300 ppi while I was half-way through the project, so this should look good no matter how close in you zoom!
Hope you like it.
-
Thank you Builder for your latest upload. Glad your enjoying 300 ppi scanning now.
Geo
-
Thanks, builderboy! Love getting replacements for those smelly old fiche scans :D
-
Nice work on the latest, Builderboy! I've been caught up in other things and haven't had a chance to scan in a month, but appreciate all the work others are continuing to put in.
I'm in the camp of "scan and don't try to color correct back to a hypothetical original", but I must admit that you have been doing a good job with the restoration approach. Congratulations.
What worries me more with some scans coming in (even on JVJ comics) is that the resolutions are sometimes pretty skimpy. I scan at 300 dpi and then resize to 1024p wide as per the FAQ on the board about scanning. That seems to result in files in the 24MB range which I find scale pretty well and are not too gigantic or too low-rez. Files in the 12MB range strike me as too compressed.
The bottom line, to me at least, is that this may be the only chance that some of these comics have of being scanned. Let's go for as much resolution as possible! (And forgive me if I'm repeating an opinion that I might have posted awhile back.)
-
Boy, this thread had gotten so dusty, I got the red warning blurb across the top! But....I'm BACK ;D
After much time spent reconstructing things over at GAC (not done yet...but we would be NOWHERE as far along without DCM's gracious help), I have finally gotten back to some scanning, for fear that JVJ would despair of my ever completing my job on his first box to me.
This one is Fiction House's Jumbo Comics #090. No color restoration (which will please many here mightily, but I will perform after scanning of my box is done), but it is c2c, and I did take time to edit out the defects from what looks like a screwdriver which had been pushed through the entire book. See if you can tell where!
Don't fret, Jim! I got me a new scanner...an 11x17 with fast action so I can cook along now!
Hope you enjoy
-
Thanks Builder, I myself always likes a good jungle book, and on New Years eve to boot, YUM!!
Geo
-
Very Nice!
Thanks very much BB and welcome back.
That new scanner sounds very sweet!
:)
-
Thanks for the nice scan BB!
If it's not breaking any rules of this site, would you name your scanner & give some specs (like scan rate)? I'm looking for a replacement scanner & you seem satisfied with your new one.
Thanks!

I'm not fretting, but it is a bit off-putting just how long it seems to be taking EVERYBODY to scan my books. I had sort of envisioned two to four batches per scanner per year. Real life strikes again.
"One day at a time: The Speed of Life."
Peace, Jim *<|:{>
Happy New Year everybody...!
-
I wish I could help Jim but life is complicated isn't it?
Thanks for the review BB. I think it might make a good topic on it's own so I'm splitting it off.
-Yoc

Indeed. C'est la vie, eh?
All the best for 2011.
Peace, Jim *<|:{>

A bit late, but worthy of a shout: A pair of JVJ books, both sweet Fiction House jungle action, Jumbo Comics #'s 71 & 73. No color restoration on either (for now...). Really nice copies to work with, thanks JVJ! This, an oasis of release in the midst of my scanning siege for Jim.
Hope you like 'em...much, much more to come.
-
Thanks BB and I'm always here for any help you might need with edits, joins or corrections if you needed it.
-Yoc
-
I'll have some coming your way shortly, Yoc. I hope this weekend gives me a chance to send one your way.

Interesting....I just tried a quick experiment. DCM's new preview feature and the thumbnail on the 'new uploads' page only work on cbz files, and seems to have problems with cbr's. I love the feature, and so tried to see if I could download a 'problem' file, recompile it and re-up it.
I did so with Treasure Chest v08 004. It was a cbr with some junk in it, doubtless for a Mac zip compiler. I dumped the files and created a new cbz.
The product was semi-successful. The file is now viewable in the preview feature, but interestingly, when looking at the first page, it reports it on the header as 'page 0 of 35'. All 36 images are visible, just numbered 0 - 35, rather than 1 - 36. Is this the reason that a thumbnail fails to appear on the 'Newest Comics' page?
AH! Before I could even post this, the problem fixed itself. Now a thumbnail is there.
BTW...my opinion only...I LOVE the format of the 'Newest Comics' page, and wish all pages were like that. I understand that render some titles that have over a hundred issues to be pages and pages of listings. But wouldn't it make finding the one you want 100% easier? Or alternately, how about a view that was like GCD's cover galleries? Then you could click on an image of cover and go to that issues' download page?
If it isn't an inconvenience on the admin end (cleaning out the older, non-preview compliant versions), I wouldn't be adverse to re-compiling & re-upping files when I encounter them. This way, you would eventually head toward having a site where the features work for all the offerings.
-
Hi BB,
Thanks for pointing out CBR files are not uploading properly. We will look into this. Normal RAR files with jpg files do work and the preview and thumbnails are fine.
Any scans with 'jpeg' file names will NOT work this is why the Star Ranger 1 cover fails to load. A clue that a file is a cbr inside a cbz will show 'no cover yet' in the thumbnail.
CaptDJ is the code guru for DCM. He tried adding the covers to the titles pages for each comic title and it didn't look good and took a long time to load as we show 100 titles per page. It was decided to show the covers in the latest uploads, ratings and download sections. We think it's easier to navigate, faster and less eyestrain. A cover gallery only might be an idea for down the road.
There are still some bugs with the cover thumbnails. One being once a file is added one cannot easily change it unless you are an administrator or remove and re-add the file with any problems fixed. One common error is a cbr file renamed to cbz. I was guilty of doing this with many of my uploads when the upload feature was refusing to add cbr files. On my system just renaming the file had no effect on CDisplay. Sadly it does wreck the preview feature.
Thanks for your suggestions and help.
-Yoc
-
thanks for the reply, Yoc. I hadn't consider loading time for a page with all the associated graphics. I did have one more question, tho.
Now that you have the automatic cover thumbnail, do you still need the 'add a cover thumbnail' feature in the file upload page? Should we put one there?
-
Hi BB,
Sure, feel free if you like. Some like Len like to include splash pages from interior pages as well.
The AutoCoverThumb is smaller than the old manual one as well. But it's entirely up to the uploader.
I was always encouraging people to include them as they look so darn cool, now if all goes right it's automatic and between it and the Preview feature CaptDJ has done himself proud and made DCM so much better than it once was!
-Yoc
-
I will post here what I had posted over at GAC...I just scored a copy of Jo-Jo #24! Once I get JVJ's stuff completed (so close to being done!), I will post this Jack Kamen beauty. Very exciting stuff!
-
We will be on the lookout for it Builder, thanks in advance.
Geo
-
Sounds great BB, looking forward to all of them!
:)
-
Now up from JVJ+BuilderBoy (with minor edits by me) is a rare one -
Movie Comics #2 [Feb'47]-52pg-c2c -JVJ+BuilderBoy
Featuring Bob Lubbers and tasty Matt Baker!
-
...and MORE Matt Baker, now up: Jumbo Comics #087. Something for everyone; some color-restored stories, and some left in the raw (raw-ish...I did tweak levels, crop, and clean).
Hope you like...
-
Thanks Builder for your latest upload.
Geo
-
Thanks, BB!
-
You're welcome, guys! Geo, I saw your PM's over at the sister site, and will get those comments up after I take my mom to a medical appointment this AM
-
Thanks BB
Geo
-
All done, Geo. In light of the comments posted on my recent upload's page, I think, from now on, I will strictly post raw material. There doesn't appear to be much appreciation of what I am doing with my editing, and so I will scan, crop, straighten, and post, and leave the editing for my personal collection.
-
To adjust or not adjust a scan is a very very old argument BB.
Don't take anything said personally. I certainly appreciate the scans!
:)
-
Thanks for the kind words, Yoc. I just upped the last of the Fiction House Jet Aces books, issue #01, completing the series.
-
And here's another for tonight now from BuilderBoy:
Jumbo Comics 091 from the JVJ collections with scans by BuilderBoy.
Thanks Builder, it's most welcome.
Geo
-
as always, Geo...my pleasure. I have another issue of Wings on the board now...#089, so, between Jon and I, pretty soon we will clean up that annoying gap in the series.
-
Great work guys!
The Wings Project has made HUGE gains since you two (and LoftyPilot) started working on it.
:)
-
BuilderBoy have a new Jumbo Comics 093 (c2c) with scans and edits by BuilderBoy with the book from JVJ.
Thanks you.
Be sure to be on the lookout for another book from BuilderBoy and JVJ soon, sneak peek it is Jumbo Comics #91.
Geo
-
Jumbo Comics 091 (c2c) 52 pages is now up for downloding.
Scans and edits by BuilderBoy from a JVJ book.
Thanks goes out to both for this.
Geo
-
thank you very much for the uploads :-)
-
I think this is the same scan that was uploaded in the beginning of may. (Jumbo 91)

My bad. You are right and it has been removed, thanks for checking.
Geo
-
Long time, no see. My day job has me hopping these days, but I have been pouring some energies into scanning and editing a book from my collection, Fox's Jo-Jo Congo King 24, now up.
A lot of work went into cleaning up printer registration errors in the Jo-Jo stories (look at the last, non-jojo story for comparison). Hope you like it.
35 of 36 pages, paper 300 DPI scans.
-bb
-
Thanks BB!
Great to hear from you. I was getting worried about you.
:)
-
Thanks BB,
For those who'd like a c2c issue, the missing ibc of Jo-Jo #24 is the same as that in Phantom Lady #22. This can be verified by "mirror-reading" the inside back cover of the Heritage issue at:
http://comics.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=812&lotNo=2130
Setting the levels much darker helps -- or you can just trust me.
Jon
-
Awesome detective work, Jon! I am adding the page into my copy as I write.
Does anybody want me to upload the c2c file?
-
Hi BB,
Sure, feel free to upload the c2c version.
Please mention you are adding the missing ibc in the description as well.
Thanks!
-
done! More coming soon
-
And the incomplete one removed.
Thanks for the extra upload BB and looking forward to what is to come.
:)
-
Wings Comics #92 now up, 52 pages, 300 DPI, c2c, a JVJ beauty. Thanks again, Jim. And to all of you whose patience I nearly exhausted.
-
Thank you BB, be sure to now take a break, OK?
Geo
-
Great work, BB. Now, we're down to two Wings...which seems oddly appropriate.
-
Ouch! PUNishment!
;)
Thanks very much BB!
-
Thanks for the Jo-Jo 24, Builderboy. I love it, and you did a very nice job on the scan, too.
-
thx very much, D! That one was a labor of love. Not that they all aren't, but it feels good to contribute a book from my own collection once in a blue moon.
Tonight, we are down to working on one wing, as I have just put up Wings Comic 090, leaving just issue 093 in the work pile to edit and post.
After that one, I am on to JVJ's second box, full of Prize books. The first will be a Prize Comics, complete with a Dick Briefer Frankenstein.
-
Wings Comics 90 is far and away my favorite issue of that title (at least, that I've read). Thanks for putting it up. :)
-
my pleasure, kranky...most thanks to Jim V Jr, who has trusted his library to us. I agree with you...issue #90 was a high point in the Captain Wings storyline for sure.
-
And it's available for downloading and thanks goes out to BuilderBoy for the scans and also to JVJ for letting us all enjoy this book (and all the others he's let us scan).
Thanks again guys.
Geo
-
Thanks BB!
I'm especially looking forward to any Briefer Frankenstein stories/issues.
:D
-
Thank you Builderboy for Jumbo Comics 148 a JVJ Collection book.
Geo
-
Amen.
-
You folks are too kind. Next up...Wings #093
-
BBoy debuts as promised - Wings Comics 093 -another book from the JVJ Collection!
Thanks very much BB! :)
-
BBoy debuts as promised - Wings Comics 093 -another book from the JVJ Collection!
Thanks very much BB! :)
Sure, Yoc...my pleasure. My apologies to Jon that it took so long to squeeze it out. As promised, I am scanning on JVJ's Box #2, full 'o Prizes. I will post on the update thread after I catalog the box, but first on the scanner (as promised to Yoc), is Prize Comics #21, complete with a Dick Briefer Frankenstein. Not his 'happy' version of the monster, either, but the revenge-obsessed one.
-
Very Cool!
Gotta love Franky! :D
-
It's up, Yoc! I am going to pump these through as raws due to the sheer volume, and drop back and edit later ('cept for the covers).
-
Thanks so much for scanning Jim's Prizes, BB! Downloading Prize 21 as I write this! :D
-
My pleasure, kranky! :)
-
The scans were really terrific, BB. Some really good stories as well, especially the one with the Black Owl and the poor soul who gets scalped over his platinum strike. Modern comics might have gone completely over the top in their depictions of violence (the Ultimate Marvel universe is particularly ridiculous), but people sometimes forget that young readers in the Golden Age often saw quite a bit of grue in these superhero comic pages. The death is kept off-screen here, but I can still remember the adventure with The Hood (in Cat-man Comics) where a villain gouges the eyes out of army cadets, or the Hangman in Pep Comics where people would get decapitated. We won't even talk about William Gaines in the 50's and the formation of the Comics Code.
Anyway, I'm such a sucker for these old issues of Prize Comics with characters like Yank and Doodle, Power Nelson, and Airmale -- so I'm looking forward to seeing more down the road as they're scanned in. :)
KB
-
I was delighted to see Prize 21 because I have wanted to read the Chief Skullface story since I first read about it in the early eighties. I was not disappointed. I'm as big a BrieferFrankenstine fan as Yoo, but he monster wasn't the only feature I liked in Prize. The book was a great choice to scan.
-
thanks for the kind words, fellas. Two more issues of Prize to go, both with Briefer, I believe.
-
Looking forward to them. JVJ has a bunch of Prize issues on his list, so I'm just very grateful that you're making a couple of them available for all of us to read, BB.
-
Up now, JVJ's copy of Prize's Treasure Comics #2. Again, I am doing limited edits at this point, and getting the books up on the boards for consumption in raw format.
I know that I had given some indication of sequence on which might be next from JVJ's box o' goodies, but the cover for this one pulled me in.
Jon did such a nice job of editing his half of this series, that this book may look dull in contrast. Fear not. I will return to edit this issue in due course.
-
Thanks for the up BB.
Geo
-
That's the first issue of "Treasure Comics" I've ever read and it has some interesting features. I wasn't aware that Prize also used the public domain Paul Bunyan character, and the Dr. Styx story shows that the writer was well versed in the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Loved the artwork on the Gor story, and most of the artwork in general. One or two stories would benefit from having the scans lightened a bit, so I'm glad you will edit it some more later. That is a nice cover. Thanks for turning me on to the title; if I had seen any issues before I probably dismissed them as issues of the Catholic giveaway, Treasure Chest.
-
By the way: Treasure Chest was not a giveaway comic. Kids in my Catholic grammar school had to buy them by subscription through the classroom teacher. I had to forego that pleasure because my parents couldn't afford it.

That I did not know. I'm not Catholic and came from a community that didn't have a Parochial school until I was in high school. Both of my nephews went to grade school there and they were under the impression that Treasure Chest was a giveaway book, but that you had to be in Parochial school to receive copies. I assumed they knew what they were talking about, especially since both Lutheran and Baptists did hand out cartoonish pamphlets to their Sunday School classes which appeared to be free, but were undoubtedly paid for by the respective churches. Reality punctures another myth.
-
One to cap the long weekend (who here didn't observe the Columbus Day holiday?): Prize's Justice Traps the Guilty #32.
Some fine early Jack Kirby and others that I cannot ID at this point, although some of it seems familiar (Deadliest Game looks a little like Ed Winiarsky)
Interiors are currently raw for expediency, but will get edited eventually. I did a teaser thumbnail of the Kirby splashpage.
Enjoy!
-
Thanks BB!
-
My take on this is that they are all primarily S&K Shop jobs:
Cover is probably Meskin/Marvin Stein
Shoplifting Syndicate is probably Marvin Stein and shop.
Deadliest Game is probably Charles Nicholas and shop.
Underworld Banker in Rudy Palais and shop
A Very Careful Guy is pure Mort Meskin
FWIW.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Thanks for the index Jim!
:)
-
sweet info, Jim! I will have to go back and look again tomorrow. For tonight, uploading Prize Comics #22, with Briefer, Binder, Paul Norris, Ben Thompson & more.
Enjoy!
-
Very cool, thanks BB!
:D
-
Yes thanks! And I have to say, I'm impressed with the results of a 300dpi scan saved at "low" quality. I may have to try that on my next book. I think it's better than 150dpi at "medium" quality....

You've made my week with the addition of Prize Comics 22, BB!
And perfectly appropriate for Halloween with Frankenstein! :D
-
Thanks for Prize 22 great stuff..
-
My pleasure, guys! And an evil Franky at that!
Eric, the other thing that I picked up from discussions between JVJ and others was trying to avoid using the software to correct rotation, which tends to diminish image sharpness. So, I have been doing my darndest to get the book square on the scanner...something not always easy. I work in .psd format, and my page files end up around 45 Mb after image enhancements. JVJ showed me how to use the automated scripts on Photoshop to batch process all the .psd's to .jpg. I use a compression setting of 3. This tends to give you a finished file size of just less than 1 Mb (for edited images, 500 Kb for unedited).
-
That's great info BB.
I think we had an old topic somewhere around here where JVJ and some others talked about their scanning techniques. This would make a good addition to it.
-
I don't use Photoshop rotation, or anything really. Not on my master scans that is (which I save as uncompressed JPGs). What I post here, other than having been resized, are raw scans. And yes, actions and batch processing are two of the greatest time saving features in Photoshop.
-Eric
-
your work looks beautiful, Eric. always crystal clear
Thanks for the kind words, Yoc. I would be interested in hearing what some of the others are doing for editing techniques. JVJ gave me a handful of tools for the process. I have incorporated some, modified others. I don't think everybody has the same philosophy or same finished product in mind when they work, so there is likely some great degree of difference in processes.
Although my process keeps evolving, I should do a list this weekend of the steps I take in an edit...throw it out there and get some reaction. Who knows, somebody might learn something in the process of discussion (hopefully me!).
-
Yes thanks! And I have to say, I'm impressed with the results of a 300dpi scan saved at "low" quality. I may have to try that on my next book. I think it's better than 150dpi at "medium" quality....
-Eric
The "quality" setting in the jpg "save" window applies mainly to areas of flat color, so 150 ppi saved at "high" quality only adds more subtle details to broad areas of color and the transitional areas between hard line edges - it will have VERY little affect on the lines. Which means, of course, that you're absolutely right that a 300 ppi jpg at "low" will have more (at least TWICE the) DETAIL as a 150 ppi jpg saved at "high" simply because there are more pixels to work with.
The more pixels you capture with your scan, the better you can make your final cbz file output. Most of the compression happens in areas that your eye skims over anyway, so the jpg algorithm just tosses pixels that don't add much your appreciation of the page.
my 2¢
Peace (Hi, Tilliban!!), Jim (|:{>

I'm going to move these to that scanning topic if I can ever find it again!
-
Rangers Comics 057 - BBoy's scans from the JVJ Collection now up.
Thanks guys! :)
-
Coming soon, a re-scan of Rangers Comics #50 c2c 300 dpi, fully edited, and soon thereafter, Prize's Treasure Comics #3 c2c raw.
-
Thank you RH, we'll be looking for it.
Geo

Now up: JVJ's copy of Prize's Treasure Comics 003. I have done a lot of editing to creasing, fix ink smears, paper foxing, and some judicious color guide issues. Other than the front and back cover, there has been no color adjustment to the interior pages, but I will revisit the issue for that at a later date.
Interestingly, (and I hope JVJ chimes in here), Jim lists the Marco Polo piece and Munson Paddock, when it seems so close in style to Dick Briefer's work. I know that they both worked in Bernard Baily's studio together, and I am less familiar with Paddock's work.
Another interesting thing that I hope Jim will comment on is his credit of Baily on the Dr. Styx piece. GCD has it as Charles Voight, another member of what would be Baily's studio, but I don't know the chronology of when the studio was established (compared with the production of this issue), or how close Baily's studio cleaved to a single style. Jim?
-
Thanks BB!
-
Coming soon: Fiction House's Jungle Comics 138 from my collection and Prize's Black Magic v1n1 from JVJ's
-
BBoy's JUNGLE 138 is now up!
-
Thanks a bunch! The end of Jungle creeps up and up.
-
Black Magic v1 01 now up, and Fight Comics 77 on the editing board
-
Wow, totally cool, thanks very much BB!
:D
-
...coming:
(http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t252/builderboy/Fantastic-007-pg-01sm.jpg)Youthful's Fantastic 009, 36 pages, April 1952, featuring Ed Goldfarb / Bob Baer, Stephen Kirkel, Vince Napoli, and Harry Harrison / Ernie Bache.
-
Another soon off the Precode List - Very Nice!
-
...and picked this up today
(http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t252/builderboy/Humphrey-001-pg-01-sm.jpg)Humphrey Comics v1 n01, Oct 1948, 52 pages. I like the work, signed Ham Fisher. Could it be another pen name for Bud Fisher?.
-
Actually, bb, the work done here is probably a combination of strips by Al Avison, Warren Kremer and other Ham Fisher ghosts. Ham was a real person but was notorious for not working very hard. The Joe Palooka comics were all newly drawn strips using his newspaper strip title character. Kremer is credited with creating the Little Max character which first appeared in the comic book.

-
Thanks, JVJ. I did notice a varying quality to the interior pages that would have suggested something like that. I will pull up some Avison and Kremer samples and have em handy when I pour over the interior.

Now up: JVJ's Prize Comics 23.
Some really nice things in the book: apart from Briefer's Frankenstein (always a favorite), there is some great work by John Cassone on the Spike Mason feature, and Binder's Black Owl has some choice panels. JVJ, I believe your notation on the Doctor Frost feature is that you have made a tentative ID on the pencils...is that the circle's meaning? I liked many panels in this piece as well...I will have to track down more Ben Thompson stuff.
-
Great issue of Prize Comics, BB! Thanks so much for scanning/uploading it -- hope to see more issues of Prize down the road from JVJ's collection.
-
Thanks BB.
I sure would like to see Prize 25 some day to see if the 'Prize Fighters' story continues after capturing Franky.
-
Thanks, kranky and Yoc. I have hit the bottom of the barrel on the Prize Comics title, but more Treasure, Black Magic, and JTTG (MANY more JTTG) to come.
Freddyfly send me a note that he is on the hunt for missing issues of Prize Comics, so we can all wish him good hunting.
-
Len's been super nice to me today and I certainly wish him luck with Prize Comics fills!
-
Double header weekend: Youthful's Fantastic 009 now up.
-
Thanks BB, we've been waiting for this one to be added since you announced it.

Now up: JVJ's Prize Comics 23.
JVJ, I believe your notation on the Doctor Frost feature is that you have made a tentative ID on the pencils...is that the circle's meaning? I liked many panels in this piece as well...I will have to track down more Ben Thompson stuff.
Ben Thompson was a Funnies, Inc. stalwart, with art on Ka-Zar in Marvel Comics #1. His work varied tremendously, and was always, IMHO, derivative of Alex Raymond. It's always easy to find more about these guys by checking the Who's Who. I doubt this was done through Funnies, Inc. but one can never tell. By 1942 Binder had set up his own shop and it's possible that folks like Thompson were working for him freelance. There never seemed to be much loyalty to any particular shop.
As for other Prize issues, I've got quite a few. Any of the scanners up for a new batch and want to include them, just holler.
Books like Fantastic #9 are great because ALL of the stories are signed. Makes IDs pretty easy, eh?
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
More of Jim's box-o'-Prizes coming atcha: Treasure Comics 004, all raw with a color restored version of the cover and JVJ's index cards.
More Arabian Knight and Marco Polo goodness...plus: Dr. Styx versus the Devil
-
...THAT's what I get when I try to rush a book out the door. Prize's BLACK MAGIC #4 is now up, tragically mis-labeled as BLACK MAGIC 0041. ::) :-/
A JVJ beauty for the Prize section.
-
Fixed and a great addition I've been wanting to see for ages.
Thanks very much to you and JVJ for filling the gap.
:)
-
Thanks for Black Magic 004 (v01 04) JVJ c2c.
Also BB I "fixed" the numbering .
Geo
-
Thanks, you guys! Double thanks, geo, for fixing my goof.
Next, a sought-after Fiction House from my collection to fill a hole, another issue of Justice Traps the Guilty from JVJ, then an anniversary present from my collection...something on the obscure side from Star Publications.
-
Looking forward to all of them BB.
-
OBSCURE got my interest :D BTW at around 9PM Eastern Standard I may win a copy of My Pal Dizzy an obscure part of the Metropolitan 5 pack. These things are really hard to come by and not cheap. I want them ALL!!!
-
Good luck Jim!
-
Thank you so much for editing and uploading rangerhouse's Black Terror 06. Another issue on my "most wanted" list crossed off! :D
-
my pleasure, kranky! My thanks to Rangerhouse for letting me edit his scans. I still have a couple to get to that I am sure will please...all is due time.
Next on the block is a Prize Western #104, chock-a-block full of John Severin goodness. There is some heavy tanning in the paper, so it is taking some extra editing efforts.
-
Likely to see Prize Comics Western 104 this weekend, plus Fight Comics 70. Just acquired a coverless copy of Prize's Frankenstein #6. Get psyched. Briefer's evil Franky, I believe.
-
Yoc is going to be really happy about that Frankie issue. ;)
-
Right you are KB!
Another issue of Frankenstein Comics just makes my week!
:D
-
Fight 70 is now up, thanks KB!
-
And a big thank you for another western from Prize BB.
Geo
-
My pleasure, guy. My package came in with the Frankenstein...coverless, but complete, and I found a nice HAG front cover image for it. The scanning has commenced!
-
Frankenstein 006 fully scanned and in editing...meanwhile, an upload of Magazine Enterprises A-1 Comics #009, Texas Slim, c2c raw 300dpi, now up.
-
Thanks again BBoy, love that a second Frankenstein would show up so fast after the first one!
:D
-
Thanks again BBoy, love that a second Frankenstein would show up so fast after the first one!
:D
Yoc, I think that I will release it raw for the sake of getting it out there (probably this weekend), but once you see it, you will want for an edited version. I think this will please those like 'em that way.
-
Sounds good BBoy.
And if you'd like me to edit it feel free to upload the raw scans to the FTP and let me know it's waiting.
-
Yoc, as I have started the edits on Franky, I think I will keep that one in-house, but I will start streaming you scans of Wambi #9 this weekend to the FTP so you can get started, if that works for you.
I will do full page spread PNG's, leaving the crops and edits to you.
-
Sounds just fine BBoy. Just give me a shout when they are finished uploading.
-
A couple of recent pick-ups:
Parents' Magazine 'Calling All Kids' #4
Charleton's Six-Gun Heroes #30
-
OK BB we'll be looking for them when they are ready.

What's next:

scanned, and on the editing table
-
looks nice!
-
Joe Palooka #1 should be up in the next week or so. Just picked up a copy of Harvey's Black Cat Mystic #58, but the book has been trimmed on 3 sides. Loss of image on fc, ifc, ibc, and bc, but only minor loss of interior material (some panels lost their border). It arrived with Superior's Strange Mystery #19 (this is up on site, but in need of upgrade). I also have Joe Palooka #'s 5 & 6 arriving this week, and Ajax's G-I in Battle #7.
-
Congrats on the new books BB!
-
Looking forward to Palookaville!
-
In the pipeline!!!! Scanned, and 10 of 68 pages edited.
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/100268228/Big-3-002-tease.jpg)Nice tie-in with the current DCM promo.
-
Yep, looks strangely familiar!
:)
-
Currently on the scanner: Jungle Comics #3.
(http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t252/builderboy/Jungle-003-pg-41-sm.jpg) (http://s162.photobucket.com/user/builderboy/media/Jungle-003-pg-41-sm.jpg.html)
-
Niiiiiiiiiice!
:D
-
Now up from BBoy -
The last issue needed to complete this title:
Wambi 008 [c2c] Builderboy.cbz (http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=22930)
Thanks!

Jungle #3 edits in progress...thought I would share an image. Over half-way home at this point on the issue, with some interesting follow-up books in the on-deck circle. Stay tuned.
The image is from Fletcher Hanks' Fantomah story. This particular book is heavy with mis-registrations, bleed-thru, and tanning, so the work has been intensive, but I have been pleased with the results. This is the result of utilizing some techniques handed down from JVJ. There are two separate correction layers and related overlay layers, a levels layer, and two separate color adjustment layers, to remove the effect of the darkening paper at the edges. The two separate correction/overlay levels are used to remove the scanner's anomaly of the shadow at the binding.
(http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t252/builderboy/Jungle-003-pg-65_before-and-after_sm.jpg) (http://s162.photobucket.com/user/builderboy/media/Jungle-003-pg-65_before-and-after_sm.jpg.html)
I understand that this isn't everyone's cup of tea, and have heard and respect the opposing camp's positions.
-
Sure sounds like a lot of work BBoy.
I'm certainly looking forward to seeing the final results!
Have a great 2014!
:D
-
Up now from builderboy is the promised JUNGLE COMICS #3!
Our many thanks for this early issue. :D
-
I found I had a copy of a DS book, Outlaws #5. It is coverless, and rat-chewed, but Heritage had a nice front and rear cover. I have it scanned and partially edited. I know that small publishers are the current feature, so I am happy to have something to contribute!
(http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t252/builderboy/Outlaws-005-sample.jpg) (http://s162.photobucket.com/user/builderboy/media/Outlaws-005-sample.jpg.html)
-
Thanks BB.
Checking my notes I believe JVJ has sent that issue to Brian for scanning so it might be showing up soon.
Movielover should be able to confirm it though.
Please feel free to share your edit all the same. We welcome more than one version of any book.
-
Yes, I saw issue #2 show up on the new upload list! I might back-burner it. Brian & ML do such a great job, it definitely lowers the priority. It certainly has been a joy editing it though...the process of editing a book makes your eyes pour over every detail.
-
Can't wait for it BB.
Geo
-
Now up on the site from our own BBoy - his comic, scan and edit -
FIGHT COMICS #7!
^-^
-
currently in the works:

Book completely split while editing (brittle, and despite careful handling...well, these things happen). I am excited to get this out there.
