Hi gang,
Some artists stand out when looking at the history of GA comics.  
One such artist known for the 100s of covers he did for Timely, Nedor and others was Alex Schomburg.

From the late 30's to the late 40's he produced over 500 covers before moving west and concentrating on book and magazine work.  During that time he was at the top of his field and reputedly Never missed a deadline!
You can read more about Alex's bio at this link - www.pulpartists.com as well as a 1993 interview with Steve Duin here.  Finally you can read another interview with Timely's 1940's Editor-In-Chief Vince Fago from Alter-Ego v3 #11 on-line here.  There isn't a lot about Alex but he does relate that Alex was given cover roughs to follow for his work with Timely.  A question some have wondered about online. Well said Yoc, Alex Schomburg is a classic artist, who I found not in comics but on the covers and inside illustrations for the Winston Science Fiction books.  His covers pulled me into the stories, some of which weren't as good as Alex's illustrations 

Thanks for the links and bringing our attention to a fine artist who brought a lot of the “Sense of Wonder” we felt when we viewed his artwork.

Over at the SilverAge_GoldenAge Yahoo Group, I managed to identify 3 of the covers:  Cat-Man Comics #24 (May 1944), Wonder Comics #10 (Feb 1947), and Amazing Adventures #2 (May 1951).  The banner itself contains 1 giveaway:  Exciting Comics #45 (March 1946).  Ben Samuels identified 4 more:  Dear Beatrice Fairfax #6 (March 1951), Startling Comics #49 (Jan 1948), Real Life Comics #12 (July 1943), and Speed Comics #35 (Nov 1944); leaving 1 unidentified.  Yoc took pity on us and revealed the last was Captain Easy #13 (July 1948).  Some of these were not credited at the GCD, so I've submitted indexes of those covers.  Thanks to all!

Hi Darci,
Always happy to help.  I had a hard time choosing from so many great covers.  Unfortunately Alex was at his best when you could see the entire cover.
Fun to have stumped everyone with the Capt. Easy cover.  It was one of the last to be chosen.  Real Life Comics #50, Startling 53 and Thrilling 61 came close but didn't make the cut.

Golden Age comic fans say Schomburg with the same reverence that fine art fans say Monet. I was fortunate to meet him when he was the guest of honor at PulpCon one year. Like many guests, he was deeply moved that people remembered and revered his work.

And you are right about his place on the reverence scale.  As our hobby ages, I hope the masters aren't all forgotten some day.
