Did you ever have any luck with this?  I really like the comic format but I’m not into fantasy or superhero stories which severely limits my possibilities!  Are there any comics that you have found interesting on this site that you think I might like?

I can't help with farmers & peasants in general, but I can offer a few suggestions for "I don't like fantasy or superhero" more generally.

Heroic comics is generally true stories; with a lot of very good artists working on them including Frank Frazetta in several issues:

A lot of St. John books feature amazingly good Matt Baker artwork, you can choose between crime or romance to start:
