Info on an Australian Comic Series
« on: January 31, 2019, 03:32:01 PM »
Hello!
I was wondering if there are any knowledgeable collectors with regards to Australian comics.
Reports are that the series "King Size Comics" (1958-1959) published reprints of some of EC's "New Direction" stories.
Are there any collectors that own copies of this series and would be willing to specify which issues feature reprinted EC stories?

These are the scans I've collected so far...
http://comiclist.000webhostapp.com/Cleveland_Press/Cleveland_Press_EC_Reprints.html

I would like to shrink the gallery down to only the issues that feature EC stories.
The comics were published by "Apache Comics Pty. Ltd." which is evidently an imprint of "Cleveland Press".

The only information I have is:
1) Issue #23 (the first issue) features stories by Wally Wood and Al Williamson. I am not able to determine if the stories were originally published by EC.
2) Issues #32 has a story with Frazetta artwork that was not an EC story.

These appear to be very rare.

I know it's a long shot, but I figured I'd see what members here might know.

The following publishers in Australia also reprinted EC stories:
Calvert (heavily censored/altered) - http://comiclist.000webhostapp.com/Calvert/Calvert_EC_Reprints.html
Associated Newspapers (Anthropomorphic content) - http://comiclist.000webhostapp.com/Associated_Newspapers/Associated_Newspapers_EC_Reprints.html

Don't know about "knowledgeable".  Keen more likely.  And a collector.
I got a bit excited for a moment there as I confused King Size Comics with Giant Size comics featuring The Phantom and other Frew Aus. heroes.
However, This series is a bit of allright as it features Silver Starr by the great Stanley Pitt.  You'll have noticed that the early issues feature Australian strips, but quickly introduce many more American reprints.  Interesting.
Apache aren't listed individually on the Ausreprints pages. See here for King Size comics:-
https://ausreprints.net/search/true/true/true/1/50/king%20size%20comics

but this title is.  I see that it is sometimes considered as a continuation of El Lobo but that's dubious.
As to whether there is EC material, I confess to not having a scooby.  But some issues have contents listed and you might want to trawl through them.  You never know!
I'm sure there are other members with a greater knowledge of Aus comics so with luck you will get more responses.

It's listed as Apache on their site. I have a link to it at the bottom of my web page.

I've pretty much tapped out their site as a resource and explored much further than their site.  I ended up acquiring one of my better cover scans off of Twitter.

My interest in Apache books is based on the excellent work by Stanley Pitt, not forgetting the nowadays obscure characters they published at the start of the run.
I'm sorry my attempt to help you was of no use.
If it's of interest, and it probably wont be, the British Guide doesn't mention, apart from Mystic, any EC reprints in the comics you show on your site.  Obviously wrong, although it does list the Atlas, Prize, Harvey, etc. reprints in those books.  Perhaps they didn't think it worth mentioning.

Your reply is appreciated. I knew it was a long shot in finding info due to the rarity of these.
I'm just going by online reports as to the claims that EC content was reprinted.
People unfamiliar with EC may not appreciate the product as much as the EC fan base.

I have a decent list of British EC reprints...

Arnold Book Company - http://comiclist.000webhostapp.com/Arnold/Arnold_EC_Reprints.html
Bible Pictures Inc. Ltd. - http://comiclist.000webhostapp.com/Bible_Pictures_Inc/Bible_Pictures_Inc_EC_Reprints.html
Cartoon Art Productions - http://comiclist.000webhostapp.com/Cartoon_Art_Productions/CAP_EC_Reprints.html  (Byron Whitworth facsimile editions exist)
L. Miller & Son Ltd. - http://comiclist.000webhostapp.com/LMiller/LMiller_EC_Reprints.html
Streamline - http://comiclist.000webhostapp.com/Streamline/Streamline_EC_Reprints.html (only EC covers were reprinted)
Thorpe & Porter - http://comiclist.000webhostapp.com/Thorpe_and_Porter/Thorpe_and_Porter_EC_Reprints.html

I will plead a little bit of ignorance as to Australian comics being distributed in the UK and vice-versa. I know it happened, but I don't know the back story on it.

One of the more interesting discoveries I found was Spanish/Mexican EC reprints printed in the US.
Export Newspaper Service, Inc. - http://comiclist.000webhostapp.com/ESN/Export_Newspaper_Services_EC_Reprints.html

That and Charlton's connection with EC.
Impact #1 was first printed by Charlton with a white logo and recalled. Bill Gaines ordered them destroyed, but there seems to be a lot still around. The more common version with the yellow logo is actually a 2nd printing done by someone else.
I have a Valor #2 cover on a Charlton pre-code comic for the interior. At first I thought it was an EC comic cover married to a Charlton interior. I'm not so sure now as to how it came to be.

Thanks for your replies.
