Here's a selection of pictures with 'wow' factors that have been shared over the years. I suspect you might have seen most of them already if you've been interested in comics or comic blogs for any real time. But they are still very cool and well worth sharing.
---
Dad Bailey's newsstand
           1                       2                       3
#1 - Dad Bailey newsstand 1 - 1939

found on David "Bodie" Bailey's blog.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/bodie-bailey/1482223605/
----
This was Charles Bailey's second business. He worked for years in the luggage business. A fire took his business and it was then that he found out someone forgot to pay the insurance. Old enough to retire, but without much money he opened up this newsstand. It thrived and got bigger and he worked there for many years, he lived till he was ninety. It was possibly located on or near Florence in South Los Angeles close to USC.

The woman is reaching for the FIRST issue of LIFE MAGAZINE (dated 11/23/36, price 10 cents) which was reintroduced as a weekly photojournalism magazine.

Notice in the row above the Life Magazine are a series of comic books. This photo captures an pre-superhero time when several titles were just starting and a few that were in transition. I was able to identify almost all of the comics starting with the Mickey Mouse magazine located above the woman's hand. The books are (left to right):

Mickey Mouse (Disney) v2 #3(15),
More Fun (DC) v2 #4 (16),
Funny Picture Stories (Comics Magazine Comp.) #v1#2,
Tip-Top (United) #8,
Funny Pages (Comics Magazine Comp.) v1 #6 (November 1936),

New Comics (DC) #11,
The Funnies (Comics Magazine Comp.) #3,
Popular Comics (Dell) #11,
Detective Picture Stories (Comics Magazine Comp.) #1,
Famous Funnies (Eastern) #29.

All of the books have a publication date of December 1936 except for Funny Pages which was November.

---
Original caption for photo taken at the store on 2/17/49:

For a five-year-old, choosing one comic book from a whole stand of them is like trying to select the biggest, reddest apple from a bushel basket.

Russell Whitehead, kindergarten pupil at Perry School, decided on "The Three Little Pigs," but not until he had given a dozen other offerings the twice-over.

His mother, Mrs. Barry Whitehead of 711 Arch St., figured it wouldn't be long until Russell huffed and puffed and blew his way through "Pigs."

Then they'll probably be back at the magazine stand.

Almost all genres of comics can seen on the racks here and the only genres that are not seen are crime and horror.

#8 - 1954.03.22-Sleeping newsdealer by Vivian Maier
This one is by Vivian Maier (1926-2009).  She was a street photographer who lived in New York City and Chicago and worked as a nanny.

She secretly took over 100,000 photos that were discovered hidden in storage lockers in 2007 when the lockers were auctioned off at a local thrift auction house on Chicago's Northwest side. There is some controversy over the handling and representation of her work and a legal battle over the ownership rights of the negatives among several collectors who bought her work. Presently John Maloof, a former Chicago real estate agent, accumulated about 90% of Maier's work which includes 100000 to 150000 negatives, thousands of prints, hundreds rolls of film, home movies and audio tape interviews. More info at this site:

http://www.findingvivianmaier.com/

One of her pictures that is of interest to me and some collectors here is of a sleepy New York City newsdealer in March 1954. Note the March 22 1954 issue of Time and Newsweek magazine and the Groucho Marx TV Guide cover.

Archie's unknown - Probably just another copy of Pals 'n' Gals #2. Archie's Girls Betty & Veronica, Archie's Pal Jughead and Archie's Rival Reggie all had the Archie's too small to be confused and Archie's Joke Book #1 (https://www.comics.org/issue/226133/cover/4/) laid out the heads above Archie's differently.

Binky unknown - No, it's not Leave It To Binky, the logo is wrong, it is Bingo The Monkey Doodle Boy #1 https://www.comics.org/issue/306490/cover/4/

Boy Loves Girl unknown - probably 38 https://www.comics.org/issue/266404/cover/4/

#10

Right row unknown - Real Screen Comics #101 https://www.comics.org/issue/75341/cover/4/

A good spot online to check batches on a newsstand is Mike's Amazing World of Comics newsstand feature http://www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/newsstand.php

Since the books are likely to be from the same point in time if you find one book from say September 1946 you can go to that date to see what else matches and go back and forth a month or two to pick up any stragglers.

Thanks SS.
Yep, I've used Mike's site a few times but I generally have more luck using GCD's cover gallery view for any title and looking for a similar cover as in the photos.

Yeah, I like the GCD, especially the way you can see a bigger version of the cover, but sometimes if you don't have enough of a title to do a search with it can be hard to figure out except by guesswork. Mike's helps me narrow down possibilities.

Not sure were to post this!

Was watching "The Good Humor Man", 1950 Jack Carson.
Here are a couple of shot of him reading a Captain Marvel comic book!
He is about to enter the inner sanctum of the Captain Marvel Club headquarters!
The inside of this clubhouse is plastered with lots of memorabilia of the Big Red Cheese!
All the kids have a Captain Marvel cape, Jack Carson being one of them as they recite the Captain Marvel club pledge!!!
Search for The Good Humor Man on youtube to catch this comic book goodness!!!

Thanks B!
I've heard of the movie but wasn't aware of the heavy comics connection it sounds like it has.
I'll have to give it a look.
