Hi SS,
Oh no worries, I understood your point.  I've noticed in the past they seem to just say Jan 1 of some year when they only know what they think is the year of a picture.

I'd love to add this photograph to the collections: This is my father, Joe Morris (nee Joachim Bernd Anton Georg Moltar) around 8/9 years old, on the USN Darby sailing from England to Brooklyn. My father was a German immigrant who spoke, read and understood ZERO English when his mother remarried an American serviceman, and was pretty much left to his own devices when it came to educating himself. One of the crew gifted him a couple of American comic books, which taught him rudimentary English and started a lifelong hobby.

I'm not sure what book he's reading. My pop used to claim that it was Challengers of the Unknown, but this would have been around 1950/1951 -- at least six years prior to the Challs' debut. If anyone can identify the interior, I'd love to know!

I attempted a perspective correction on two of the pages in the book, but the images are quite small. Do you still have the original photograph? If so, can you scan it at a higher resolution and share it? With a little more detail, it might be possible to make out the characters in the comic panels.

Hey Moose,

Thanks for giving this a shot! The original is packed away, so this is the largest I can manage from the scan. I don't recognize any of the characters on the pages, altho I can see a figure in a ghost-like cloak. Sadly, that part of the photo is blurry despite the higher res scan ... still, I appreciate the expert assistance!

Here are the perspective-corrected grabs from the closeup image. Maybe someone else can figure out who the characters are.

That was the hint I needed; I have found the book: Joe Palooka #66. Here are scans of the pages in question.

Holy smokes, I owe both of you a steak dinner.

I'm really gobsmacked. This is a great piece of information to have (particularly since I can now pick up a copy of the first comic my father ever read -- there's a jewel for a collection). Thanks so much, folks, this was a really unexpected benefit to posting that picture...
