Here's a catch-all section for any historical photos from around the world will be shared.

**************

Our first two are from the UK and CANADA.

#1  November 23, 1896 from the UK: London.
The platform view at Victoria Underground Station on District Line, depicting the familiar railway newsstand at its dawn.

#2  Nov 4, 1937. CANADA: Toronto, ON.
On this small newsstand you can see a Saturday Evening Post from November 6, 1937 on wall.

A sign notes the owner, T. Beale was crippled.  Working at newsstands was one way to make a living for some that were physically disadvantaged.

Hi Gang,
Here is a new batch of foreign newsstand pictures for you.  This update they are all from Vancouver, BC area of Canada.
Almost all of them from Jack Lindsay working for the Vancouver News-Herald.  These might look a little stale but they are packed with comics!  And they include a unique time in history when Canada passed the War Exchange Conservation Act law forbidding the importing of American comics among many other items which was effective August 1, 1944 until the end of WW2.  The passing of that act gave birth to the Canadian Whites (comics published mostly with black and white interiors.)  From 1941 to 1946 several Canadian titles could be found on the stands.  You can see examples of many in pictures #1 through 8.  After that you'll find American books back on the stands.

NOTE TO ANY GCD INDEXERS - I've found in my many hours hunting down the contents of these Vancouver pictures there are several titles that were listed on GCD without any dates or with 'circa' dates.  I hope these pictures can help the GCD nail down more accurate publishing dates for these more obscure titles.

To read more about the Canadian Whites you can check out this website: "Beyond the Funnies: Canadian Golden Age of Comics, 1941-1946". Library and Archives Canada.  http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/comics/027002-8300-e.html.

NOTE 2 - when I couldn't find the exact Canadian issue, if it has a US original I will cite that issue.

Henderson died in Toronto on Feb. 10, 1992 at the age of 63.

As I'm not sure how to upload a photo, I'll post links, if that's ok.
This shop was in Bethnal Green, London.  One of the comics in the window is Flash Comics, which we have on CB+:-

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/af/72/0c/af720ca7469473fc79763656b1ee82c1.jpg
So much stuff all over this shop but I can't make out what comics there are:-

I can make out a copy of "Jag" in this one:-

Ad board for Roy Rogers in Wonder Comic:-

Lots of titles, incl. Australian comics here:-

Hope these will be of interest.  I can try to i/d the titles in the pics, but it will take some time.

Thanks Paw!
I had the first one planned for my next batch but this works fine.  And you've got some I've yet to see and that's always nice.

I hope there were a few that were new to you.  I'll be branching out into more retailers, conventions and comic creators in the future though not nearly all of the people that are out there.

Take care,

Next one has a selection of Britsh and American comics:-
There is a Nyoka the Jungle Girl and while it could be the American 55 https://www.comics.org/issue/8903/cover/4/ it's probably the British 54 https://www.comics.org/issue/376538/cover/4/

Maybe either the American Cowgirl Romances 1 https://www.comics.org/issue/259420/cover/4/ or the British Cowgirl 1 https://www.comics.org/issue/1098440/cover/4/

I see a Bob Colt it might be American 6 https://www.comics.org/issue/247695/cover/4/ or British 54 https://www.comics.org/issue/348966/cover/4/

Also what appears to be Hopalong Cassidy I'd guess American 57 https://www.comics.org/issue/129863/cover/4/ or British 68 https://www.comics.org/issue/362484/cover/4/

Bob Steele Western possibly American 5 https://www.comics.org/issue/247704/cover/4/ British 51 https://www.comics.org/issue/961336/cover/4/

Maybe Young Eagle 6 https://www.comics.org/issue/249053/cover/4/ couldn't find a British counterpart.

Possibly Polly Pigtails 36 https://www.comics.org/issue/239727/cover/4/ couldn't find a British counterpart.

In this photy, the ad for " No Mean City" is interesting as the book was published in 1935 which is far too early for the comics in the window.
However, I have also identified a couple of other titles - Saint Detective; Crime..... ?; A Superboy, which could, of course be an australian edition as well as an original - Aus comics were often available in the U.K.; is there a copy of Crime Patrol?; and I think there is a Jungle.... title there also.  Needs more study.

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/af/72/0c/af720ca7469473fc79763656b1ee82c1.jpg
This one has a copy of the Dandy peeking out from behind 2 copies of Chips. Also, and apart from the i/d's by SuperScrounge, There are some pocket libraries on the middle shelf.  But I can't make out if they are the thin prose paperbacks which were legion at the time or picture libraries.

https://n7.alamy.com/zooms/169ede382eaf482aaf66579aba5ebe7d/donald-bytheway-newsagent-wolverhampton-street-dudley-the-black-country-ew5k1j.jpg
Looking more closely, there are other British comics in the window but they are obscured by mags in front of them. I can make out a copy of The Victor below Jag. This pic is later, probably 1969, as Jag was a short run comic from 1969.

https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/05/15/article-2629449-1DE00D3B00000578-26_964x1221.jpg
Lots of titles here, and I think they are a mix of British and Australian.  Most of the  Aus.titles I can see were available in the U.K. but as imports.  The Phantom, for instance is a Frew issue and the covers are completely different from the T&P covers on the British editions.  Also here are issues of Char Chapman; Tim Valor; various cartoon comics.  But there are also reprints of Little Sheriff, which was an Italian title and was reprinted in a number of countries.
Of great interest to me is the Oh Boy featuring Wonderman and I'm sure it is #22 (although it wasn't numbered at the time) from 1949/50?
"Space Squadron"? in the bottom shelf seems to have a 6d price. But that could be an Aus price.  not too sure.
I'm happy for anyone to correct me on this info. or add to it.

Modifying this to add, Yoc, do you have a note of this site:-
http://delibrerias.blogspot.com
There are a couple of old pics of Spanish comic shops.  I've been in Continuara in Barcelona a couple of times and last time I got a look in the basement with the boss who dragged out boxes of old Spanish comics, mostly landscape format.  I spent too much money, but it was worth it.

Thanks guys!
SuperScrounge, I had this same photo in my 'to share' pile without much comics found so your info is a big help.

Paw, I will be resharing some of your new to me pics in a future update in this thread so they can be seen in galleries like the others.  I had about 30 more to share so your new pics will be a big help.

Nope, I've never seen that http://delibrerias.blogspot.com blog before.  Landscape comics.  A rarity I've never seen in person but hear has been done a couple times over the years.

Thanks for sharing!

#2 - 1943.08-Eltham, London WW2
Children queue up outside a shop for comics in Eltham London during World War Two August 1943

Contributor: Trinity Mirror / Mirrorpix / Alamy Stock Photo

(Original caption) "originally appeared in the Daily Mirror in 1943 and shows kids queuing for their comics outside a newsagent. British comics were so popular back then that due to wartime paper rationing supplies were limited and sold out quickly. Therefore the newsagent in question (and, no doubt others) sold them only at 9.30 on Saturday mornings, with eager kids forming long queues to buy the latest Champion, Dandy, Funny Wonder or any of the other classics of the era. As you can see, this was the high point of Saturday mornings for some children. Comics seemed essential back then."
