A few more comics from the 30s
« on: May 15, 2015, 03:36:16 PM »
Hi,
I have another four comics with unknown creators from vintage Bulgarian newspaper called Weekly Fun (Sedmichna zabava):

The first one is called Three Lives
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee121/grigorp/06.jpg
The second one is called Lord/Master of the World
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee121/grigorp/03.jpg
The third one is The Three Musketeers
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee121/grigorp/09.jpg
The fourth one is Bring Them Alive
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee121/grigorp/07.jpg
Unfortunatelly I'm not sure if the translated titles are the same or even close to the original ones as was with Barney Baxter which in Bulgarian became Jean Tuno. Also I'm not sure that all of the above comics are American.

Thanks in advance.

If someone wants I can provide links for download the full scans of the newspaper. I've scanned 18 of the 34 issues and by the end of the week will have the complete volume done.

Hi grigorp,
Thank-you for you full scan offer but DCM doesn't share foreign language scans.
I think your work would fit better over on CB+ (also free like DCM) at this link -
http://comicbookplus.com/

Best to ask on the forum if they would be allowed before uploading though.

Whew! I was afraid I'd be a one-hit wonder but I dug up a positive ID on "Bring 'Em Back Alive." This is Ted Towers, Animal Master, another King Features strip. It was supposedly written by Frank Buck, the "animal collector" whose memoir Bring 'Em Back Alive was a big hit in 1930. In 1934 William Randolph Hearst signed Buck to do a newspaper strip (as he did Dashiell Hammett for Secret Agent X-9) but whether Buck actually wrote the strip I don't know. I found online references to it as Bring 'Em Back Alive but I believe it appeared in the U.S. only under the title Ted Towers. The originating artist was Glenn Cravath. However this appears to be the work of his successor Ed Stevenson. That would make it circa 1936-1939.

As for the others--wow! The only thing I feel reasonably sure of, is that they aren't King Features strips. Of course they don't have to be of American origin at all. I get an Italian vibe from "Master of the World" and "Three Musketeers," but who knows? Some of this might be home-grown Bulgarian product.

If you have the time. the energy, and the desire I'd love to see these magazines posted over at CB+. I find them fascinating.
