GAYLORD DU BOIS "YOUNG HAWK" NEW FUNNIES #65, 66, 67
« on: July 28, 2012, 08:03:41 PM »
Hi,

DU BOIS (rhymes with to-voice) was a writer for Western Publishing.

YOUNG HAWK was a 15 year old pre-columbian Indian who had adventures out west with his 13 year old pal Little Buck.

DU BOIS wrote the adventures of YOUNG HAWK as a back-up feature in issues #11-145 of THE LONE RANGER.

GRAND COMICS DATABASE claims in its LONE RANGER #11 entry that ...

//
The Young Hawk feature originated in "The Funnies" (Dell, 1936 series) #65, June-July 1942 and was also featured in "New Funnies" (Dell, 1942 series) #66 and #67 (both 1942); whether the strip appeared anywhere between 1942 and 1949 is not known.
//

Will anyone provide scans of YOUNG HAWK episodes from any source, especially the pre-LR episodes?

This was not a licensed property. It originated with Western Publishing's comics division and should be PUBLIC DOMAIN.

According to GCD, an 11-page YOUNG HAWK episode appears in: Red Ryder Comics #33 (April 1946).

Were there other appearances in Red Ryder Comics?

Any that can be uploaded...

It's these early episodes that present the greatest puzzle. Where did the YOUNG HAWK feature appear BEFORE the Lone Ranger? Just 4 episodes are made mention of at GCD: 3 in New Funnies, 1 in Red Ryder. Other appearances may exist, but how to find out? The Lone Ranger issues are easily enough confirmed, and are for sale. The earliest episodes, I don't even know how many there were beyond those 4.
