For those who HAVEN'T solved the mystery, I chose Picture Parade #1, one of the truly bizarre covers in the history of comics! What WERE the artist and the editor thinking of? Let's do a sentimental picture of a boy and his dog and then let's get ready to turn them to bone and ash. Yeah, that'll sell this new comic.
Is it obscure? To some, yeah. Published by Gilberton (Classics Illustrated), so it's not THAT far off the mainstream.
I'm still working on yours, Mark. Haven't much time right now.
