Seeking Kid Friendly Comics
« on: June 12, 2012, 11:22:31 AM »
I am always on the hunt for kid-friendly comics to post on my website, JuniorDispatch.com. Recently I got a few suggestions for some great color comics.
Next up ... can anyone suggest some kid-friendly black & white comics? Here's a good one ... Long Bow.
What I am interested in doing is grabbing some of these BW comics and  computer-coloring them for a more modern look and appeal. I'm no expert at this, mind you, but I can at least eliminate the "print dots" and mis-aligned colors.
(And I don't do this out of disrespect to the old stuff, just trying to get kids interested in comics!)
Even if you can't suggest some B&W comics, let me know of any kid-friendly comics that have impressed you!

Already suggested:
  • Peter Wheat (I'm working on recoloring/color correcting issue 1)
  • Animal Comics
  • Jingle Jangle Tales
  • Dell Scribbly
  • Dan Brand
  • Tipi
  • Long Bow

What is your target age range?  5 years old? 10 years old?

For some kid friendly black and white comics you might want to check in our UK/Australian and NZ Comics section.  Most of their Golden Age comics were printed in black and white.
I would consider many of their reprints of the American comics published by Fawcett such as Captain Marvel, Marvel Family, Whiz Comics and Captain Marvel, Jr. to be quite kid friendly (and often a lot of fun too).
You can also look over the original color versions of these comics in the Fawcett section as that may give you some ideas of how the original colorists dealt with coloring the stories back in the day.

Target ages are quite wide, but your suggestions don't have to be all inclusive.
I'm interested in items for new readers (ages 5-6) all the way through sophisticated readers (ages 12 and 13).
I don't mind hosting a really simple comic right "beside" one that takes a lot of reading skill to navigate.
Of course since this is for kids, I want to avoid gore, intense violence, sexuality and negative stereotypes.
Public Domain comics are a must as well!

How about the Big Red Cheese? (Captain Marvel)

I have always felt that those stories are just wonderful for children of all ages.

Looking forward to seeing the reworked Peter Wheat.  And just seeing this list makes me think I have good taste; on those 4 series I'm the ONLY scanner on one, the primary scanner on two (mostly thanks to JVJ on one of those), and did about 1/3 of the fourth.

I agree with Josemas that Fawcett Comics are kid-friendly, they had their own "comics code" that said what you couldn't do in their comic magazines.
