What is the background of the Holyoke One Shot issues? They must be war era books and they are obviously reprint collections but they contain no indicia, the covers are reprints of the first page of stories about secondary characters and often the title characters doesn't even appear. I'd wonder if they weren't giveaway books if they didn't have prices printed on the peculiar covers. Does anyone know anything about the decision to publish these?

I don't know about the decision to print these issues, but the covers have 10 cents marked on them. No. 5 is below the word comic, no.9 is between the legs of the man throwing the punch and no. 10 is on the right about halfway down. So they were clearly sold, apparently in 1944.

"Series title comes from Overstreet Comics Price Guide. Each issue is individually titled but sequentually numbered. Contents are reprints of issues published by some of Frank Z. Temerson's earlier companies (Helnit Publishing Co., Tem Publishing Co. and possibly one other).
It is not clear who published these. Temerson may have published them through is later companies which were active at this time, or Holyoke may have acquired the plates when it took over Helnit and kept them for later use. Or they may have been acquired and used by someone else entirely, as there are no indicative markings anywhere on the issues."

The main reason I'm amazed the so-called Holyoke One-Shots were published is that paper was rationed during the war and the books really don't seem designed to sell. Of course, in 1944 comics might have been like movies and the demand for escapist fare simply outstripped the demand. Some of the worst movies ever made were released in 1944 and usually broke even if not turning out to be profitable, and the Holyoke One-Shots might have been printed for the same reason.
