Another interesting thing concerning these books...
I grew up in Anoka, MN about fifteen miles from Robbinsdale, MN where the first headquarters of Fawcett publishing was located, until they moved to New York.
I remember first hearing about the finding of these ashcan issues of Whiz. I always heard that they came across them in the widows home of the publisher. At that time my wife's mother had a boyfriend who lived in Robbinsdale.
We all would visit him regularly. My thought has always been, where in Robbinsdale did they find those ashcan books? Was it in a house or old building just a few blocks away from where the boyfriend lived?
Did they find them in New York or Robbinsdale, does anybody know? You know I would sleep easier knowing they were not just a few blocks away from where I hung out!!! I always have dreamed of going to a rummage sale and finding some really interesting comic related item. You never now!

These are lovely historical artifacts, but the story about starting Whiz with number 2 doesn't make any sense.  Having an ashcan number is no logical reason to start a series with number 2.  DC didn't start any of its series with well documented ash cans with number two.  Actually the real reason why Whiz started with number two is much simpler.  It didn't.  There are 10 issues between the first published issue and number 10.  The 2 in the indicia is just a printer's error caused by switching covers at the last minute and using the planned cover for number two on number one instead.  I think it took them to issue five to get the indicia numbers and the cover numbers to agree with each other.  Pure sloppiness.  When have we ever heard about THAT from a comic publisher?
