I have absolutely no idea, dear Yoc.
Why they choose 1440 pix width as their SMALLEST (!) format.
I frankly don't get why people insist on high-res files for books which were abysmally printed...
Sigh.
It's the new times. Everything has to be HD, blu-ray, 4K and 3-D.
Heck, I'm still watching DVDs on a telly with cathode ray tubes.

But for today it's another treat courtesy of JVJ:
TRUE CRIME #9

Stories are crap, though. Hey, it's a crime comic! Watcha gonna expect for your dime?

I have explained it to you some months ago Tillmann ;)

Anyway, here for this book: http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=24402

If you have a place where I can download the originals I may give it a try.

I think they have upped my Dropbox quota to 50G so I could share some space there.  It only works if you also have an account with them though.

Hi guys,
If files are exchanged and sensitive info has to be exchanged to do it perhaps you best use the Private Message option here (

-click this under your post count) or use email?
Wouldn't want something potentially bad to happen.  This is a public forum.

You are all crazy.
Trying to better shabby old comic books.
But have it your way.
Anyone who likes can download the RAW scans of TRUE CRIME #9 under this link:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/2vq69qv0a7w338n/TrueCrime9RAW.zip

They look like this.
Off-square single pages stuck behind plastic.
My advice: Don't.
To quote a line from the fabulous movie THE BIG LEBOWSKI:

Just a heads up since few people seem to know this! :) JPEG is the worst format for editing comics in since it's lossy.
It means that every time you save and open one of those files it loses sharpness and clarity.
How much depends on the compression level used.

PNG is good, or TIFF. Of course those files will be much, much bigger!

I save and store my scans in Photoshop's own format and batch-convert (and resize) those files to JPEG for the CBZ when I'm done.
That way I can always come back to those files later should I need a different size or edit something. Of course this takes
up a lot of space.

Anyway, I will give it a shot. I love a good challenge!  O0

Good luck with this ArKay!
Yes, I scan in PNG and batch at the end as well.  Others use TIFF.

Excellent point ArKay, jpg should be the last step in completing an e-comic file.  I favor scanning to PSD files for editing and storage, which was difficult until  larger and cheaper external storage drives became available.  PNG has become popular and is another good alternate to jpg, although I've used  the older TIFF format with a great deal of success.  The resolution is much better with these formats and allows serious editing, down to the pixel level.

Another reason to use PSD file format in editing....  page alignment. Sometimes a scan will not be square due to the staple alignment, damaged page etc and you need to rotate to square a page.  I favor PSD for this operation and you're right tilliban, “ you are entering a world of pain”   ;D  but that's the challenge and fun of using a program like PhotoShop.  Using the PS Free Transform tool under File will rotate a page nicely.

There is also something I call “scanner distoration” where the bottom of a page is smaller than the top due to problems with trying to flatten a page for scanning.  The PS cropping tool has a  setting that allows you to square up the art, a little tricky but worth the effort.

Just some of the fun in bringing the old comics back to life  8)

Yeah, PSD stores Photoshop related stuff so I use it for my own files. I would convert to PNG or TIFF if I needed to share them with someone else who may not have PS or use a different version. Luckily simple PSD files (no layers or other fancy stuff) are understood by many programs these days so batch conversion is easy with tools like FastStone Photo Resizer.

http://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDetail.htm

I could probably use Photoshop for the conversion, but this tool does a great job and is very easy to use.

For me scan restoration is fun, and I still learn new tricks with every book I do. The scanning process itself is very annoying. Luckily I don't have to correct perspectives! I always put a heavy book on the comic when I'm scanning. Straightening, cropping and centering them is enough work already! :)
