Zany Comics - artists ID request
« on: June 20, 2011, 06:12:59 AM »
Glad to know Zany has been enjoyed. I did a search on ebay, Lonestar and Milehigh and no more show up. eubiecat listed Briefer as an artist. I indexed this for GCD and did not see any Briefer signature. If I missed it or anyone can give me the story I can add it to GCD. Art ID for any of the unsigned stories would be appreciated.

I tweaked your topic title to get it more attention and added a link Narf.

Briefer does Mike Monster - Private Eye, narf.
Stranger than Strange - Carl Burgos (signed)
The Truth About People is VERY good and might be Everett, but it also kind of looks like Russ Heath and/or Joe Sinnott. I SHOULD know this one, but it's late and I'm drawing (ha ha) a blank.
Archee is Ed Winiarsky (signed)
Your Snoopin' Reporter is signed "PC" and is likely to be Pete Costanza. Best Guess.
Buck Dogers is probably Paul Reinman
Zany Brainbusters is probably Carl Burgos
Abbie 'n Splats is John Forte.
Eliminate Your Skin Worries is Bill Everett.
People Are Curious - probably Carl Burgos
Mandrake is John Forte.
Inside back cover - Burgos (signed)

Hope that helps.

Thanks Jim I'll add the info to GCD but Buck D is signed Burgos in next to last panel. I still can not find the sig on Ahchee.

Good eyes on the Buck Dogers, narf. I missed that one.

Look at the bottom edge of the last panel on the third page of Archee - between the two wheels on the truck...

This one is signed Sinnott, on the lower left panel of the first page.

GAD! NobbyNobbs, it's big enough and clear enough that even my old eyes should have seen it. Thanks for pointing it out.

Your eyes can't be that bad when you were able to spot the Ed Winiarsky signature  ;D

I think it's more of a positioning thing: first or last panel is where I look the hardest. The penultimate panel is an uncommon location for a sig so I didn't dwell on it that much.

One shouldn't overlook that there are several stories signed by Don Orehek, one by Stan Goldberg, and one signed as Friedman...

As I think I've mentioned elsewhere here, I love these MAD imitations, perhaps largely because they provide an insight into some scrambling artists whipping out work that defined the low end of their quality. (Or in the case of Orehek, of up and coming artists who went on to better things, gag cartoons in his case.)

All the signed artists are recorded at GCD. Even I could identify those. Orhehek has a website with many examples of his work through the years. If you or your kids had any of those 101 _______ Joke books they may well of been Orehek. We may now think of Zany and Cracked as the low end of the spectrum but they had some of the top talents in their early issues. I was one who often would prefer Cracked to Mad. I loved Shut-Ups and Hurry-Ups and still do enjoy them. The movie or tv parodies varied from issue to issue so at any given time one could be better than the other. Severin did many for Cracked so you know those look good. In Mad I enjoyed Lighter Side and Spy vs Spy the most. I was always amazed by Argones. He provided so many gags per issue.
Think for a minute that each of those was in itself a gag. If they had been full page and printed in some other magazine he would have been making a fortune. He is a great talent.
