I was unclear. I meant that I suspect he was nominated by the Republicans in order to generate some interest in the press but largely make one of the other nominees look more mainstream. But he wouldn't have become the candidate if only because a Republican agitating for what amounts to a VAT isn't going to be able to raise industry money.
The key is that the regional fund-raisers (he passed away in 2009, but a friend of the family married one of them a few years back) all supported Romney and have been selling him since 2008. In the long term, no other Republican really had a chance, none of them were darlings of the money people.
