Not a comic creator, but Michael Hart was (or should have been) near and dear to all our hearts, here:

It could very well be that, without Project Gutenberg's example, we wouldn't see sites like this, the Petrucci Music Library (imslp.us and imslp.org), MusOpen, and probably a bunch of others I'm forgetting that make their name on freely supplying public domain material to a large community.

As a Marvelman fan from way back, when all we could get here were British comics, I was particularly saddened to read this.  He did so much for British comics and gave so many young lads such great escapist entertainment.
