Hello, how are you? i thought it would be nice to let you know about my publishbing project for the 2011. I'm an italian publisher, and i work mostly with comic nook. in the summer of 2010 i discovered this site, and it was awesome. After some reading, some reaserch, and some inquiry to the right people, i decided to publish some of the golden age public domain stories, in Italy.
i don't bore you with all the tech details. Let me just say i'll publish 100-pages tpb, with stories, and essays about some of the best authours (IMHO) of that era.
here's my publishing plan
1 -  Jack Kirby Strange World of your dreams  - PRIZE
2 – Fletcher Hanks  Starro the Super Wizard Fantastic Comics 1-7 - Fox Feature Syndacate
3 – Walt Kelly Animal Comics   - Dell
4 – Steve Ditko The Thing  - Charlton
5 – Matt Baker Phantom Lady / All Top Comics  -  Fox Feature Syndacate
6 – Jack Kirby Young Romance - Prize
7 – Will Eisner Espionage - Quality
8 – Jack Cole Midnight, da Smash Comics - Quality
9 – Lou Fine Black Condor, da Crack Comics - Quality
10 - Basil Wolverton (Storie horror e di fantascienza)
11 – Frank Frazetta (Thunda, horror e fantascienza)
12 – Joe Kubert Tor - St. John Publications

Good to hear!  I don't read a word of Italian, so I'm not in the likely customer pool, but it's still good to see this stuff in use.  Good luck!

thanks. i appreciate your kind words. I'm also a realist, and i know this kind of project can't appeal the masses. it will be a niche-oriented project, with small print numbers.
me and my partner in this operation (another publisher, wich will publish six other tpb with other stories), wil use the scans. he is able to work on some fiche-scan too, and make them ok for a printing.
could i ask you (i mean the DCM staff) if i should need some specific comics? for example.....Smash Comics 14, with first Ray story from Lou Fne, is a fiche. is possible to have a paper-scan?

There's no harm in asking, but generally, what you see is what you get.

If Jim has an unscanned copy of something you need, you might be able to bribe one of the JVJ scanners with postage, but it seems that everything that isn't already paper is that way because nobody has a paper copy to scan.

i know it, and i always thanks the gods of comicdom for all i can get here. really, i'm serious.
mine was just a "silly" request, just to express a little problem i have with some files. But it's only a minor issue. almost everything i want to re-print is in very good shape (some Matt Baker stuff is simply awesome, like Canteen Girl, or Seven Seas), and i'm sure Italian fan will love it.

you must understand this: in Italy Golden Age is 99% Superman, Batman, Captan America, Sub-Mariner, and some other National/DC and Timely/Marvel stuff.

Publishing houses like Quality, St.John, Dell, Harvey, Fiction, Fox, and many others are almost totally unknown, because no one published them in the last 40 years.

Great collection of work but there are several recent collections of most of them. Have they not reached Italy? Wonder if it may not be as profitable duplicating what is already done.

I know there are collections of Jack Cole, Steve Ditko, Lou Fine, and some of the Kirby stuff, but if i recall, they are all in Black and White.
there is the good book on fletcher hanks  by Fantagraphics  too.
but nothing had been translated in Italy.
just a book about Kirby-Simon romance comics, some year ago.
nothing else.

So, basically, for italian market, all these tpb would be "new". and some authors will be published in Italy for first time.
Our project will show the original page in full color, side-by-side, with a black and white version with the translation. let me show ou an example.
