Freedom Brigade #72 (Sep 1986) - Interior Page
A Private Little War

In this issue, flighty genius inventor Charles 'Whiz' Wilson (and his time travel device, the Futuroscope) has appeared at Freedom's Stronghold in Philadelphia, and offered to take some of the members to the European war theatre to fight the Nazis.

Before they can even answer, he transports them to -- a barn; not exactly the front line they were expecting. Orchid is annoyed, and the Face is not happy with Wilson's explanation of where they are.

Calling out from above comes a voice demanding, "Who are you people, and what are you doing in my war?!?!". The Grim Reaper, who has been operating behind enemy lines for years by this point, has appeared and is not pleased by the interruption of these dilettantes. I think he was waiting for the cover of darkness to start a raid on a Nazi rural base. That, or he likes alone time in barns - he's awesome, who's to argue!?

Bob Budiansky illustrates the issue's last page shown here, penned by Thomas Royale.

When Chthonak shatters the barrier separating the God-Realm from our own, he breaks through the Earth's crust and threatens humanity itself. The world quakes in terror at -- Chthonak, the God Below!! Can the Planet's Ultimate Super-Heroes defeat this being, who is literally a god?!?

Wow. Nice.  I think this is my new favourite. Is that inked with a crowquill, or just a fine-tipped pen?

Bob says

"Primarily these two pens:

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen
Pentel Tradio Stylo Pocket Pen

The first one is a brush, obviously, the second one is closer to what one would describe as a "fine-tipped pen" (it all depends how you hold it)."

Cool.  Your artist has quite an eye for rendering. Wonderful use of shadow and texture.

That one has a lot of action in it Roy. Nice, I think I've seen it before, most likely on the Timely/Atlas board is where the link was given.

What says "Merry Christmas" better than Spring-Heeled Jack fighting a Tiger-Man? Nothing.

Victorian super-hero Spring-Heeled Jack investigates a bizarre series of murders, only to find himself face to face with ... a Tiger-Man, one of Dr. Moreau's beast men.

Brought to you by David Bednarski.

Interesting piece, but I can't help but wonder what's going on in the background.
