I'm creating a fun comiczine

I'm not sure where to put this, but I'm in the process of creating a comiczine. A comic that specializes in public domain funny animals and fantasy series/characters. But I need help knowing what PD characters and series I'm allowed to legally use for my comiczine, and create new comics out of.
