File ratings - what are their purpose?

A lot of scans had weirdly high or low ratings. It didn't help that many people were probably rating the comic rather than the scan! Like quite a few others I reckon, I started off giving the best scans the default 5 thinking it was the highest score! I was going to carefully rate every scan I had seen so I'm glad I didn't quite get around to it now the ratings have been taken off.
