Ethan allows the jealous Amos to beat him severely; the next day, Ethan leaves for the city and Lola joins him.

Later, Helen says David has lost his ambition since Ruth’s been gone. Ruth refuses to help, and when David overhears Helen and proposes to Ruth, she turns him down as well. Her crush is over because he’s “weak.” Ruth is now “free...free!”
